Just don't see the point. I mean when they said "Wireless charging" the first thought that came to mind was a means of the phone extracting energy from the no where and recharging the phone somehow... but no its nothing that cool. Just a dock you can lay the phone on...whoopity doo.
I don't see how this could be any advantage other than reducing wear and tear on your usb port, and I can see it being a disadvantage if I want to play with my phone while I'm winding down for bed.
I use the phone in the car, and it's nice to not have the phone tethered to a cable there. Also I have at least 3 devices to plug in at night on my nightstand, you understand how messy that gets when you're fiddling with plugging and unplugging cables.

It's a novelty. Nuff said. If you don't want to use it, don't.
I'm just trying to understand the appeal. Hell the Nexus S came out in 2010, and I still don't get the purpose of NFC...and I can't figure out how to get it to even work on my nexus 7

It is simply for convenience. You can skip plugging in a cable. Thats it.
Why is that not enough for people?

You should be complaining about features the phone doesn't have, not the other way around.
this is a small use, but one I will appreciate... I hate having to use my phone as a flashlight to find my cable and try to plug it in by feel at night... the idea of a phone crash pad that charges is appealing to me. I realize it is less efficient, slower, still requires the pad to be plugged into the wall etc... but I'm lazy, and I'll appreciate it.
Also, it makes for more configurable docks, no longer limited by needing to plug in. Also easier to make a case with battery built in... but lower efficiency so defeats the purpose.
Potentially in the future we can make use of tables and bars at restaurants that detect and charge devices (starbucks is supposedly doing this soon).
Id like to have a computer with it built in so if I set my phone next to my laptop (as I frequently do) it will charge.
As for NFC, the uses are greater, like having an nfc tag on your router so people can easily get the password, quickly syncing bluetooth, as an adjunct to other sensors to initiate tasker profiles (ie. NFC tag on seatbelt that goes across pocket with phone in it initiates bluetooth sync to car)...
I dunno I'm making this stuff up as I go and I'm not the most creative guy... the thing about these sensors and abilities is that they add potential. Orientation, magnetometer, accelerometer, barometer, light/proximity sensor, cameras (front and back facing), some phones have pressure sensitive grips, nfc, gps etc etc... In the hands of the right developer you can create really interesting functionality.
The main thing is that a lot of these features Google is throwing out isn't entirely useful for the world today. With wireless charging, as benhc911 said, we could have tables at places or just a mat where people could put their phones and have them charge. I wouldn't be surprised if Google HQ had a table where people would put their Nexus' to let it charge, it would definitely be a lot more convenient than several ports and wires going around the place.
With NFC, it has most utilities in applications such as Google Wallet, but likewise, it hasn't been adopted entirely yet, and perhaps might after the iPhone brings it to their device. Same with beaming, there aren't that many devices that have NFC, and though they are big ones, the current applications are not that useful. Bluetooth just seems to work better in my opinion. With a much shorter range and ability to transfer at an extremely slow rate, combined with some security bugs apparently, I feel NFC is more of a step backwards than forwards. Then again, NFC tags and Google Wallet do seem nice.
Wireless charging will reduce the wear and tear on the USB port. It also makes for a cleaner nightstand/desk/work station for some of us. Not to mention that it is pretty cool.
NFC is also pretty cool. If you can find stores that support it, paying with Google Wallet is nice. Is it necessary? No, but it's cool. You also have the ability to use NFC tags. Look those up. Of course, you also have the Beam capability or whatever it is called.
Once you try it you'll never want to go back. I wish I had wireless charging for all my devices. I have 3 or 4 things to plug in every night. Being able to just plop the phone on the night stand is a wonderful luxury.
Damn... the whole wireless charging on public tables concept actually sounds useful! If that became the norm battery life issues would be nearly solved, since all I have to do is walk into my neighborhood Starbucks and charge.

Especially if the table detects your phone via nfc, starts charging, connects you to their Wi-Fi and asks if you want to open their menu our order your usual... some day maybe... a man can dream can't he?
That's really what I was looking for. I ain't complaining about it, I mean it's not driving up the price by any means just didn't understand the appeal. Sounds like it could be useful someday

I'm not sure of this, but I read somewhere that wireless charging is way slower than normal cable charging, so even the utility of charging your device in public places is a bit compromised

I keep thinking your going to shorten the life of your built in battery too if you use this feature constantly especially if it's rather slow charging. Li-polymer batteries can be fully recharged around 500 times and every time you plug it in and unplug it that's - 1 from your charge count.
What I really wish they did was cram a 3200mah battery behind the glass. It can be done and still keep a thin profile, just check out the razr maxx

It should be cear that most of those charging limits refer to the number of charges before the battery degrades noticeably (usually to 80% of its original capacity). It doesn't mean the device keels over at that point.
But yeah, full charge/discharge cycles are definitely the best for a battery. That doesn't mean be stupid and let it die while you're out hiking so your buddy can break his ankle and you can't call for help; it just means if convenient, do full power cycles.

Because...
I want to drop them and sell my Evo.
I can't deal with the battery life on this phone anymore, no matter which ROM I use, and how much I tweak SetCPU and/or JuiceDefender...
It's a great phone, but I am going to settle for a little less but allow my phone to last more than 1.5 days (at best, with minimal usage)
If somebody could let me know I would appreciate it dearly..thank you
Mike
I have no idea when they will change their TOS again but I'll gladly give you $100 for your evo..
Who could possibly know if/when Sprint would change their TOS?
Battery life is great on the Evo. I charge my phone every 35 hours or so.
Battery life isn't great on the Evo, don't be that guy.
But, any modern smartphone isn't going to last 1.5 days with heavy usage, except maybe a blackberry.
If your only complaint is battery life, sell your evo and buy a bold or something.
Battery life is the same across all smart phones, not sprint and their last change was earlier this year, you won't c one anytime soon. Get a bb

But yeah, I use the crap out of my phone and I average 20 - 24 hours..

It's not final, it's 'stable'
There would be a very disappointed community if CM became 'final'
Fresh 3.2.0 with the standard kernel.
This was with some general facebook, browsing, texting, talking etc. I would say moderate to heavy use. 7 hours of use out of a single charge is pretty damn stellar I would say.

ok, that's impressive.. 29 on, 7 awake.. nice
I'm still curious if you realize your phone connects to the internet though.. (and I hope you have a sense of humor)
I'm not aware of any modern smart phone with a fast processor, touch screen, multiple wireless radios, etc. that can last through a day of heavy use. Not iPhone, Evo, Galaxy, etc. Like any mobile device, you learn to manage power. When I am out and about on my laptop and not using wifi, I turn it off. I lower the screen brightness, etc. When I need to use it, I turn it on. Leaving everything and anything turned on is like leaving all the lights on in your house while staying in a single room at a time--wasteful of power.
I keep a charger by my bedside and one at my desk. I charge my phone overnight and with regular use (checking emails and texts as they come in, maybe some light web browsing on the can, etc) I am usually around 40-50% when I get home after work. If I am using it a lot or end up someplace with poor reception like a basement or a control room that is surrounded by ducts and wiring, I will either turn off data or use the charger at my desk to top off at some point during the day.
I have yet to have any problems with this since it's a workflow that evolved from my personal uses and needs. Yours may be different. Maybe you drive a lot and use GPS or music streaming. If so, get a car charger. If you are away from all outlets and not in a car for large parts of the day, maybe grab a spare battery off ebay. At least you have the option. Some smart phones don't even let you swap the battery in emergencies if you want to. I've found Evo pretty much on par with other phones with similar hardware. Just turn off radios not in use and keep chargers or MicroUSB cables in convenient places like nightstand, desk, car.
7 hours out of a single charge sucks, my iphone 3G got 1-2 days on average with heavy usage, but I didn't want to be an Apple fanboy anymore, so I went HTC, and HTC batteries SUCKKKKKK
Anyways, I hope Sprint changes terms soon so I can PEACE OUT

I still got love for Nokia, never did me wrong..
I am sick of poor performance of my EVO's battery. I am not able to use the phones full capability for sake of battery exhaustion fear. My Evo last for 6-7 hour a day for very light(almost no) use.
I juice up 6-7 Hours by:
1) Disabled background data in setting
2) Use Juice Defender
3) Uninstalled useless app from Sprint via Titanium Backup (this proves I am rooted)
4) Refrain my self to use phone for long voice call (less than 30 minutes a day)
5) Refrain my self to use applications. (Forget about Data hoggers like Netflix and other I use skyfire or Dolphin browser to read newspapers.)
6) Scheduled my Emails to sync once a day
The points 4,5 and 6 really pisses me off. If I can use my phone as a phone at the end of the day then what is the purpose of having a cell phone??
Anyways I am not using my EVO and Sprint's 4G to full potential in fear of battery. iPhone will mostly not offer me most of the things so I will be saving most of the battery at-least for a day and be able to talk more.(What most of the iphone users are claiming with coming of iOS5)
Switching to iPhone the biggest thing I have to lose is flash. I was thinking 4G network but again I am not using 4G most of the time in fear of saving battery.
In a phone these 3 features will fulfill my appetite:
1) Able to make calls
2) Use web browser
3) Use Navigation
It would be great to know what ROM and kernel you are using.
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712990
Let's keep in mind, the Evo's core is old and big.
It is an early 2009 core, in fact.
The newer cores, say in the Evo 3D, are half the size and much more efficient on the power consumption.
sounds like your phone isn't sleeping. what rom/kernel you running?
get spare parts app and see what's causing your wake lock
I used to have an iphone and never really got a good battery life out of it either, maybe a full 8hrs with normal usuage. Have u ever considered an extended battery? 2700mah's are relatively cheap on the internet. I have one and with heavy usage I can barely get it to drop below 50% on most days
lol with your "light" usage i could easily make it through two days. Something must be wrong.
I make it a whole day with sync on, background data on, push email, no juice defender, reading xda for a while, bunch of texts, and a little bit of calls.
+1 on using spare parts to find out what.
Using nav will eat your battery... no doubt about that. I will on the Iphone as well though.
I am completely stock right now and don't have my Trident Electra shipped in yet, so stock battery. I leave background data on, sync mail and other apps hourly, use Pandora and Dolphin HD regularly, Google Maps as needed, don't talk a lot but text and GMail constantly, and I have no problem getting through 10 to 12 hours without charging. Not as good as my old BlackBerry, but not horrible considering the huge screen and multiple uses. And being uprooted right now, all I use are Startup Manager and Advanced Task Killer with low security and crazy autokill on. Your screen must be awake constantly for some reason, I would look in to that.

Agreed, my phone (and battery) are over a year old and I would still get over a day of use with your usage. If you are considering going iPhone for battery alone but prefer Android OS, I would say no as there are other options to try first. However, if there are other reasons you want to go iPhone such as you prefer iOS or some other factor, then yes, you should switch.
OP, definitely post up what ROM/kernel you are running. I have a mod for AOSP kernels that helps battery life even more, so I'd be happy to get you a good setup
For me personally, an external battery charger fixed all my battery problems. Before I got mine, I swear I would unplug my Evo and by the time I hit my door it was showing 95%. As soon as I got the external, even on a completely stock Evo I got almost an hour of light use before it dropped at all. Since the gingerbread update though, battery use is simply amazing. I can work a 9 hour day and with light use I go home with 65-70% battery left.

I agree. I charge my battery in an external charger, that takes it to 100%.
Phone has been off charger for 10 hours now, with texting, surfing, few phone calls, and some games and I am at 71%
Even if I didn't use an external charger, worst case now I would be at 61%.
Something is wrong with your phone, or you have ****ty service where you are.
No way... that would be a reason to switch from an iPhone.
My iPhone friends are always cording up to recharge. I just reach into my fifth pocket to take out my spare battery, pop back cover and depleted battery out, replace with the fresh and power up. I never have to ever hover around a corded phone afraid to miss a call.
Don't understand how people would purchase a portable electronic device that you can't change the battery. To me that is unacceptable. I was able to do that in the sixties, why can't I do that now.
That is why these battery threads, at least to me, are superfluous.
Of course, YMMV. You all carry on about the battery work a rounds. Just letting you know there might be another way.

Honestly the reasoning, knowing Apple, is likely because they can control what battery you use, if you cannot remove it.
Preventing aftermarket batteries.
Stupid? Yeah.
Typical Apple? Yeah.
I wouldn't doubt I'm right.
1. Try a different kernel and/or ROM
2. Get an extended battery if you feel you need it. ( iPhone your stuck with the stock battery no matter what)
Problem solved.
Would Foghorn' Leghorn make a really bad narrator?
On topic: The iPhones battery starts to lose charge after about 7-8 months and its $75 to have it replaced. Battery life is definitely better but at least with HTC you can replace your own batteries; for a very small fee might I add.

THATS EXACTLY HOW I FEEL. I gave in to buying the extended battery from best buy for 70 bucks. And finally my battery lasts all day. I'm running decks x I think with tiamat 4.0.4 and viperboys mod and I used to not make a day without the extended battery. When u buy a phone it should last a day without extra money spent... so I'm either waiting for iPhone to come to sprint, nexus 3 if it has good battery life, or the photon 4g. Maybe even the sgs2. Engadget also reviewed the evo 3d, and said the battery might be worst than the evo 4g.

Only problem is, it stops charging if you turn off the screen. Otherwise it would make a great portable charger for my phone.
Sorry, but I'm not really seeing the point of this thread, as an Etch A Sketch beats an IPad hands down as well. So what's your point?
http://www.etch-a-sketch.com
As a proof of concept I get it, but my Iconia can barely keep itself charged, that last thing I'd be doing is sharing that precious power with another device... Though, since WinPhone devices are bacisally the Oliver Twists of the smartphone world, I can see how you couldn't resist when it's sad, needy touchscreen looks up at you and says "Please sir can I have some more? "
You people who are being negative really need to get a clue. In this case my WP7 lasts more than a day per charge typically. Because I was traveling, I didn't have the opportunity to charge the phone for two days. It was the end of day two when I used the Iconia to recharge.
Also, I easily get several days per charge on the Iconia. It is all about being smart with apps. The biggest problem with Android is the same as a Windows laptop. One rogue app can create havoc with battery and performance.
So, scoff as you may, the iPad does not provide the above service, with or without the screen turned on. If you don't see the point here, you don't really see one of the biggest advantages of the Iconia vs MOST other Android tablets.
I apologize for introducing an advantage of the Iconia. I also apologize for trying to create a thread that shows a positive side to this device vs just simply nitpicking and complaining.
Finally, if you don't appreciate what is being shown here, you don't appreciate the fact that the Iconia offers some unique functionality. Also, if you paid any attention, you would realize that I have an iOS, Android, and a WP7 device and I do not have any significant bias toward any of these systems.

I am obviously in the minority, but that pic made me laugh. I think its great. Of course I do like to hate on some Apple. Seriously though, impressive demonstration of the versatility of our Acers.
I don't get the cracks about battery life though...I'm totally happy with my battery life. Heavy use with wifi always on gets me about 10 hours or so...Good enough for me.

My thing is on for 3rd day in the row, WIFI on 24/7, and it's still got over 50% battery left. That's pretty great to be honest.
In my Ranger with an dash dock, Iconia charging my Atrix, mobile hotspot to my Iconia, AUX in to my stereo for Iconia tunes and flix, and Atrix Bluetooth to the deck for not missing a single call no matter what building I am shaking.... yeah...

This. My device is at day 7 now and the battery is at 45%. That's with reading mails, games and updates. Wifi always on.
So the battery lasts more than any device I ever owned. Actually it probably lasts more than all of my other devices together.

I think OP is trying to say that unlike the Ipad his Iconia can work with apple products but the reverse is not true. Which is a very good point.
he's just saying that.. out of the box without any add-ons.. the Iconia can charge a usb related device.. I guess if it really came down to it, it could be quite useful to have that option as a last resort..
Hey there..
I'm thinking of getting this phone, but in every review, they say the battery life is pretty crappy... can somone please share their experiences or stats on this please?

even if it is horrible. These press units aren't being used "normally" or lightly. They are constantly being hammered to get every last thing about it to talk about.
We have kernels and roms to go on. My Galaxy Nexus last 35 hours on a single charge on a stock battery. While some people struggle to get even 10 hours on it.
Wait for the gsm arena battery test results and then compare the hours to other phones to see how it performes

Exactly. my guess is also that it's because of the phone not being in the final software. Otherwise how could the same battery prove that worse compared to ICS lg Optimus? Jelly bean had a much better battery life in general too...
And IMO that is also the reason for the poor performance
Let's hope everything will be alright after the software update

The trend toward devices with internal batteries, ones that can’t be replaced, has come at the dismay of many power users who often need to switch to a fresh battery in the middle of the day. The Nexus 4 has a “non-removable” battery like most people expected, but it looks like it might be a lot easier to access than many might assume. You’re probably not going to make a battery swap in the middle of the day, but if you run into an issue with the battery, at least you know it won’t be impossible to replace.
Defective batteries and burn-out are a real concern with modern mobile device batteries, and while it may be fairly rare for something to go wrong, anyone with a smartphone who’s not willing to disassemble the entire device can tell you how frustrating it is to lose a phone to a bad battery. On November 2, a follower of Brian Klug, Senior Editor for Anandtech.com, sent him a tweet about battery replacement for the Nexus 4 on Twitter. Mr. Klug responded:
@aatifsumar there are two torx screws, then some plastic clips, it’s easy
Aatif pushed for a little more information and Mr. Klug responded with a great photo of the battery situation:
@aatifsumar two screws, boomhttp://twitpic.com/b9pbsj
The 2100mAh battery should be fairly capable of handling a day of moderate use, but for the fear of battery failure this is great news. Mr. Krug came through with another photo a little later giving a bigger picture of the situation.

Doesn't really solve anything anyone is talking about here. Being able to replace defective batteries is a separate issue from the phone's poor battery life.

i think they plugged in charger at the red square
surely, it is impossible to reach 16 hour
Yes that's true. The nexus 4 consumes lot of battery life when the wifi is used.
I take all these battery complaints with a grain of salt. First, software was not final. I find it hard to believe it is going to be THAT much different than Optimus G.
Something else -- I had a friend who got a US GS III and had terrible battery life despite doing everything. Exchanged for a new one and battery life was double the first one. Do you think any of these "get it out first" reviewers considered this as a possibility? Heck, most of them didn't even mention that Google told them the OS code was not final.
It is worth noting that LG has had battery issues in the past. Was one of the reasons I didn't get an LG last year.
I'm finding the battery life to be pretty good. Over 36 hours and still going for light use. By light use, I mean I played a couple of videos, made a couple of calls, general internet surfing, lots of drop box syncing and more. Mostly all over Wifi. Also some wifi tethering for an hour or so. I also find that the battery charges quicker than normal too. Hope this helps

This I had my phone use 35% in 6 hours. That with usage.
Finally got my LG G6 T-Mobile USA yesterday 3/23/2017. Was really excited waiting to get my hands on it since there was no models to view even at the store. All we had were Youtube video's of reviews given to people by LG for free.
My initial impression out of the box was WOW, what a sweet looking device with the glass back, and all around hot look. But once powering it up I was blown back of how narrow the screen was compared to my 5.5" G4. It took a day to get use to this somewhat smaller screen though it suppose to be a 5.7". Aside from that is where it gets good.
LG's 7.0 UI is freaken amazing. You have to use it to appreciate it. I've always been an LG UI fanboy, but this is a whole new level of awesomeness.
Next is finally out of the box wireless charging. No more cheap Chinese sticker mod to use like on my G4. It works flawlessly on my wireless charger. A nice big notification comes on screen when wireless charging starts.
Love also the camera app as it goes in and out of regular mode and wide angle mode on the fly.
There's more to write, but just wanted to put a few notes here of what I though on day 2 of using the G6.
I got it unlocked already really easily. Look in the development section on how to do it.
Any TWRP dev around? Please help us get this to our device please, please, please!!! )))
Edit.....
After a week of usage I decided to return it as I could'nt get used to the smaller narrow screen size. Getting the S8+

I though the newer battery technology didn't need that anymore like back in the day. Could be wrong.
Btw, its day 3 now and I've gotten use to the narrower 5.7" display. I also noticed that reading Google News articles seemed loaded up with tons of more news clips when scrolling down. Maybe they just updated the app? lol

As far as the battery technology, yes, they say that, but because the Android OS still needs to calibrate itself, so the battery is not going to calibrate so much, but the Android OS would need that, just like the cache process.
I changed my text size to small, kind of like a smaller dpi and I get tons more stuff on the screen. I am getting used to it that it feels like my OnePlus 3t is awkward.

Interesting. What I can tell you is that it depends on a lot of things from cellular network, wifi, running apps , and usage generally. I think this phone has 3300 mAh which is not bad compared to most phones. I agree that the software needs to be optimized. I am waiting for root and I'll do greenify and see stuff. With my usage, I'll probably get like 5 hours SOT

i got mine yesterday the 24th of march.
the battery life is good, i used it since i got it without charging it for about 3 for hours downloading apps setting everything up and wasnt draining fast.
i dont really like the front camera, the color is just not to good in my own opinion. back camera is good i like it, no problem.
it does feel narrow comparing it to my g3 yes i upgraded from g3.
i like the features, like fingerprint, etc.
screen look crisp. good, yes.
so thats my day and a half review for now..

I like the wireless charging because you don’t have to fuss with plug unplug just set it down like normal and it just charges. Mind you with the proper ROM and kernel you can get faster charging [at least on my N5].
Thank you
I've never actually liked LG UI, but I have to say, I really like it this time around. Its just overall very clean looking. It may seem that way to me seeing as I came from an S7 edge and even on Nougat, it was so sloooooow.
