I am trying to decide between the Nexus S and Atrix. I change phones every six months, so longevitivty isn't a big issue for me. I like running the newest software, and love messing around with Roms, so that is a big reason I am considering the Nexus S. My big hang up is battery life. I use my phone a good bit for voice calls, and I don't like living'next to the charger. How is the battery life on the Nexus S? The Atrix has a 1950mah battery which is huge.
BTW, I'm a Xoom user and love it.
Any advice is appreciated.
Well, if you like the xoom, you will like the atrix. Yes, the atrix is a superior device in almost every aspect when it comes to hardware however, many reviews that put the atrix against the nexus s have the atrix as the loser. Bottom line is the atrix is not yet optimized for android 2.2. Maybe gingerbread but we wont know that until it's released for the atrix. Personally, I think the nexus s has a way better look to it but that's just me. The camera on the nexus s does a better job and I beleive it's now 720p. Stock android 2.3 vs motoblur and most people will take stock android any day over motoblur. Most menu's are faster on the nexus s and again, it's more optimized on android right now. Now, with the atrix, you will get the sweet tegra games which do look amazing. Then theirs super AMOLED vs the QHD rez. I would take the super AMOLED any day as most would. Then their is t-mobile vs at&t. Yes, you can now buy the nexus s with at&t 3g on-line (Nergi Electronics) Just rambeling but my 2 cents. Hope this helps.
Hey just wanted to give you a little info about the nexus s. flat out IM IN LOVE lol this phone is amazing can't cry about really anything. but on this phone its got no sdcard slot we do get 14gb lol its supposed to be 16gb but I got over it haha. The battery is really good I loved it for the first 4 days then I started flashing rom's and of course you'll have to figure out which kernel fits your needs. like if you want to have your phone overclocked so fast it fly's out of your hands lol and sacrifice battery then that's you or you could underclock just enough and still get a overall great speedy rom. But I do miss one thing when I left my HTC evo was the sense but soon hopefully some great development will port it soon but I would hands down go for the nexus s. I have a friend that is a manager at Radioshack and I played with the atrix and wasn't feeling Motorola products to much its always trouble getting the hooked up. But the computer dock crap is cool but that's even more money and that's what I would only get it for but good luck on your choice my friend test both out and read reviews before purchaseing them to get a better example huhmm? Lol
PS: sorry for the big text hahaha

Like the other poster reminded me I can't stand moto blur (personal preference) lol but that I would also take plain Jane before that again and the phone is just sweet get it hahahaha ;-)

The best advice I can give is to YouTube both devices and figure out which one fits your needs. I honestly never tried the Atrix so I can't compare the two.
Definitely the selling point of the NS is software and its screen (at least in my opinion).

And ability to unlock bootloader very easily.
It's as simple as this:
if you want to mod your phone: Nexus S
dont want to mod: atrix [however you'll have to deal with motoblur... although gingerblur doesnt seem that awful... but the locked bootloaders is something you'll have to deal with / kernel / recovery / etc / list of problems go on and on]
just check their dev section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=997
I talk on my nexus a lot... leave wifi on all day and gps too. Have 2 accounts syncing gmail and calendar. On top of all that I'm in an area where I constantly get weak signal and the battery life is pretty good.
Just the other day I did several phone calls, recorded two videos, uploaded them to YouTube then posted them to my fb page, used Maps, tons of txts, sent kik messages all day, use the internet all day. That was a 16hr 45min day on battery (and it wasn't dead when i threw it back on the charger.)
Hows that for good battery life
I know a few people who got Atrix's on launch day and they returned them within the first week. I bought the Nexus S for myself, my wife, and convinced my dad to get one as well. None of us have ever considered returning it.
Hands down the nexus s don't waste your time with that moto blurr bull****
the nexus s is faster looks better and will always get the first updates
I can tell you that atrix is a POS. I had it and it was just wonky feeling and slow as hell. I got the HTC Inspire the other day but just bought the Unlocked Nexus S that is now available for AT&T. Can't wait to use this puppy.
Holy ****. I am getting the nexus s than. Do you get this battery stock or with custom rom?

I definitely agree with battery life. Nexus S has far superior battery life than any I've used. Personally I have not owned Atrix but I've played around with it at Best Buy so I can't speak its battery life but I can say that I found Atrix's UI to be quite sluggish. I can tell it's not optimized for Android. The Nexus S has very snappy UI, I can tell Google optimized this phone very well with the hardware. I do get 16+ hours with heavy internet and video usage and 20+ hours with normal daily usage. I'm very happy with this phone.

It has nothing to do with optimization. It's just simply because its a "Pure Google" experience. No bloat by the carrier or manufacturer.
For Atrix.. it does, 2.2 is not built towards MultiCPUs, and it doesn't help it has MOTOBLUR on top of it slowing it down. Not to mention AT&T is crippling Atrix's HSUPA (Upload)

I truly beleive that the atrix is not optimized. I think that when we see it optimized, we will see a really fast phone. We already know that tegra games run like butter on it and the tegra games are pretty intense. Overall, I think the nexus s has a WAY better design and is way sexier. Yes, the nexus s does pictures better than the atrix but then there is the no 720p thing on the NS which is a BIG bummer! Decisions decisions... Also, you can download an optimized version of Qik from the market that does video chat which is pretty nice as I use Qik with most of my friends. I know the t-mobile people can get the Qik with video off the market too. Not sure if this will work for at&t customers with the 850/1900 NS that was just released. Also, the atrix has pretty good battery life too. Especially after it's latest update.

I agreed with you that Atrix its not optimized. It's not optimized because, Motorola can't optimize MultiCPUs unless they build scratch code from AOSP. Only Google is capable of doing this.
The Nexus S also have good battery life as well. I mean, I don't think battery life is justifiable for performance.
In my opinion, I believe that the Nexus S is the winner out of this simply because the customer has more freedom on what they want to do with their device. Freedom in terms of Custom ROMs, Custom Kernel, Recovery, and more. And a better reliable network, T-Mobile (varies between location).

Ohwell, there's always the Nexus 3! Which I'm sure Google will have multi-core's in it! I just ordered the Nexus S with the at&t 3G bands (locked into at&t) plus I get 30% off thru my job. I'll report back to you guys with my finding on the 850/1900 band NS which I'm sure I will be happy with.

Posting such a thread in the Nexus S section, you're always going to get the Nexus S fanboys rubbishing the Atrix D). I personally have both phones, and I'm currently using my Moto Atrix.
Comments about Blur aside (yes its crap but!) you can replace the stock launcher with what ever you want (Its not valid reason not to buy the Atrix). Personally, I'm using the Gingerbread launcher made by Modaco and its bl00dy brilliant and certainly not sluggish.
The fact of the matter is if you're looking for a phone thats going to be current for the next 12 months, then get the Atrix. If you want a phone that has a vibrant screen and google updates (plus user unlockable bootloader to load ROMs every day and twice on Sundays) then get the Nexus S.
My sum up of positives and negatives of both phones are as follows:
Nexus S:
Positives -
(1) Nice screen (deep blacks and colour rich)
(2) Latest google Android OS releases (hardware permitting)
(3) Reasonable battery life (I generally get about 18 hrs of moderate use before a recharge)
(4) $599 price tag (outright)
(5) Unlimited ROM modding potential
Negatives -
(1) No gorilla glass (scratches easy and the oleophobic coating does wear off after a while - I have had 2 replacement phones because of this, and my 3rd has a screen protector on it which defeats the purpose)
(2) Back cover is glossy and scratches easy
(3) The camera displays a pinkish centre when taking photos of white sand, snow, anything with white backgrounds.
(4) 16Gb onboard and no expansion
(5) The body creeks - but its a Samsung
(6) Dropped calls after 5 minutes have been fixed in 2.3.3, but I still get the odd one dropping at the 5min mark
(7) Sometimes when typing in a phone number the press->response time/beep noise is delayed..
(8) I love Angry Birds, and there is lag in the game on certain levels..
(9) My Nexus One has more accessible RAM :-(
(10) Where's the accessories??????????? Not even a decent cradle!
(11) No HDMI out.
(12) Can't play AVI files straight out of the box - Need Rockplayer
(13) To replace the scratched battery cover, have to buy a min of 3 covers from some dodgy Chinese online outlet..
Motorola Atrix (I have the Bell Canada version)
Positives -
(1) 16Gb internal + 32Gb expansion
(2) Fast processor (and you feel it opening apps - theres literally no delays, especially the camera, browser, SMS and phone functions)
(3) No lag in games - especially Angry Birds (even AB Rio is silky smooth)
(4) Tegra II specially coded games
(5) Screen resolution is 960x540
(6) 1Gb Ram, of which you see around 515Mb on boot up
(7) Loads of accessories available now!
(8) HDMI out, and the cradle works sweeeeeet
(9) Plays AVI files out of the box using the standard video player
(10) Gorilla glass (YAY!)
(11) Rear cover doesn' scratch easily - and you can buy them in the shops
(12) Phone feels robust and solid - no body squeeks.
(13) 4G capable (AT&T version)
(14) Gingerbread is coming!
(15) I generally get 2 days out of a full charge with moderate use
(16) Is also $599 outright
Negatives -
(1) Locked bootloader (but you can still root and sideload stuff)
(2) Screen is not SAMOLED (typical SLCD)
(3) Not yet released in Australia
(4) Blur sucks (but can be replaced)
(5) Motorola isn't known for providing good support
(6) The odd wifi drop when coming out of sleep
These are my personal experiences. Others may vary.
For me, the ultimate phone would be in the form of the Atrix, but with a Nexus S user unlockable bootloader, SAMOLED 960x540 screen and Gingerbread. Really, thats all I would change.
Cheers

That's kind of how I feel as well after "upgrading" from an Epic 4g... I really wish something out there seemed better than the nexus, a 5 month old phone, release 5 months late on sprint, when in reality it's a year old hardware that launched on the Galaxy S last May...
I really sincerely agree with the blog and wish that a decent phone has come out since then, but all this bull**** with modified android, flaky hardware, and poor support really has me turned off from every phone except for the Nexus series.... When my contract with Sprint is up I'm likely going to be moving to the carrier with the newest Nexus, not with the best 4g coverage, fastest speeds, or newest phone.... but the one with the most reliable.
I just noticed that was posted by Chris Ziegler. I'd imagine that's the same one from Engadget, in which I find it to be very interesting that someone with so much exposure to new technology feels that way.
I agree with the article it's just makes more sense to release a product that works instead of a product that has everything but doesn't work...
This was my first smartphone. Yes, I could've waited a month and got another, and in terms of theoretical performance, better.
But I can't say I regret myself one bit, it's truly an amazing phone and all complaints I had in the beginning has been solved by the amazing devs here on XDA
I'll probably keel this phone for a long while!

Thanks for the link, phillevy. This article perfectly describes the current situation on the android handset market.
Before I chose the Nexus S, I had ordered 2 HTC Desire S which I sent back because of their crappy build quality (Google brings up lots of threads about this topic). I certainly prefer the looks of the Desire S over the Nexus S, but if you buy a high-end android smartphone you also expect high end build quality. If you buy a cheap (but still very good) ZTE Blade, you can live with wobbly switches and some other flaws in build quality.
Before choosing the Nexus S, I also considered the Galaxy S2. But Samsung's lame update policy and a barely noticeable added value of the dual core processor (besides some games) made me chose the Nexus S which brought up an update notification to 2.3.4 instantly after connecting to my WLAN router.
Bottomline: I'm very satisfied with my unbranded, factory-simlock-free Nexus S. There are certainly some handsets out there which outperform the Nexus S in terms of some features, but not if you have a look at the whole package.
it just feels good knowing i'm not getting crazy, cause i moved from my old htc desire hd for the same reason. Nexus S is not the best in all functionality, but makes everything pretty much well.
DHD makes HD videos and has 8mp cam, but it can focus with that, i can only take photos from static things.
DHD has a huge screen, but somehow its lcd screen is pretty lame, with washed colors (i have a sclcd nexus, but it get a way way better screen).
DHD has dolby-s and srs, but that speaker is awful, you can make it better with several tweaks, but...
to make a long story short, despite all devices with amazing specs arriving out there, i can't see a single one that lets me a little excited... i guess i'm stuck with nexus series!
Yep I agree totally coming from a higher spec G2x. In the end the specs are important but they are not everything. Especially if the experience is degraded by bugs (G2x) or skins (anything Moto). So you get a high spec phone and keep flashing nightly ROMs until you get one that works perfectly. That's quite a waiting game to play, especially if you can just get a Nexus that works perfectly out of the box . I view custom ROMs as something that can *add* to the experience and improve the phone in many ways, but they shouldn't be *necessary* to have a working bug-free, lag-free phone. Nexus FTW.
The Nexus series is the closest you can get to "future-proof" in the smartphone world. That is what made me upgrade from the Epic. Knowing that I will get pretty much every Android update in the foreseeable future (barring any new major hardware requirements implemented by Google...which I don't see happening anytime soon).
Its nice being free from the confines of Touchwiz or MotoBlur. My Nexy is truly MY phone. I can do whatever I want with it. Its a true Android experience.
Having the latest software and the peace of mind that I won't be left in the dust is better than having slightly better hardware in my opinion. The Nexus S 4G can still hold its own. The Hummingbird is still a very high end chip.

I just came over from the G2x as well. I went through 3 of 'em, and thought my 3rd was a winner, but that one went all wonky on me too. Supposedly gonna get an update to GB and to fix the "issues" that plague it, but I'm not convinced that a software patch and GB update is gonna fix what's wrong with the G2x.
To be honest, the NS is just a better phone for how I use a phone and I probably should have gotten it in the first place.
Yup, great phone, but needs hardware acceleration asap. Browsing experience, at least compared to my old phone HTC Desire, is hilarious. It lags at rendering flash content or big pictures and scrolling through them is not smooth at all. Another thing that is bugging me is that from the 512mb RAM, 200 is used for the GPU alone, so we're left with 300mb for the system and apps, which is very low. I often find myself left with 30-50mb free RAM and when I open some demanding apps (games for example), it lags until android kills some processes by itself, lags horridly. So I finally got to the point where I need the advanced task killer app.
I am actually surprised that people coming from the Desire HD or Inspire didn't mention anything about this :|
I was on my 4th G2x and I'm done with that phone. Reboots, freezing, can't hold a data connection or Wi-Fi. I was gonna go with a myTouch 4G but decided to go back to the Nexus S. Always loved it and it does me fine.

Yup, glad to see there are quite a few of us that left the G2x for the NS. That phone was nothing but a headache for me (reboots and shutdowns on stock systems with no additional apps installed). I went through 2 of them and ran out of patience (plus I was on day 29 out of 30 of my remorse period so I needed to make a decision!).
I hope Google doesn't go with LG for their Nexus 3. LG has left a very bitter taste in my mouth.

you are right, browser experience with dhd is really better, but to be honest, i was so pissed with update delay and annoying bugs that i was in cm7 for daily use!
I have come over from the G2X as well. On my second, I would get data drops like crazy.
But, I have not had a single drop since getting my Nexus S. I love this phone, and Ill probably keep until until the next Nexus phone releases
I upgraded from the Nexus S to the G2x four days before it was released. I used the G2x as my only phone for a bit over a month. Ended up selling it and coming back to the Nexus S. I did not experience any of the reboots, connection problems, or severe screen bleed that others are reporting. I simply prefer the Nexus S. That's means a lot coming from me...I'm the kind of person that upgrades phones around three times a year so I can always have the latest and greatest. I came back for four main reasons.
1) Overall smoother experience both hardware and software wise. Software felt smoother, touchscreen more responsive, and I prefer the feel of the haptic feedback.
2) Updates from Google rather than TMo. No-brainer.
3) Dramatically better battery life. No comparison at all, Nexus S blows away G2x. The NS is the only Android phone I've owned that I didn't need to carry a spare battery around for.
4) Form factor....this was the biggest reason. I'm on my phone for many hours per day. Even after a month I still disliked the feel of the G2x. I just didn't like holding it. It feels like a brick. Coming back to the NS was like a breath of fresh air, even with it's clearly inferior specs and pixelated pentile matrix. People complain of a cheap build quality, but I actually really like it. Sure it's plastic but it doesn't feel flimsy. And it's a pleasure to use. Even the way it flips around when picking it up from the base, the positioning of the power button, the curved screen. I just really like the phone. Keep your 1080p recording, HDMI out, and "Tegra Zone" (to name a few, list goes on and on). I'll keep my Nexus S.

As G2x owners are now experiencing. The phone should have had tasty gingerbread from day 1, but didn't. T-Mo said the wait for GB wouldn't be long, but it's already been 6 or 7 weeks. Now T-Mo says "by summer", whatever that means. In theory that means by June 21.
I do miss the idea of the raw power of the G2x, but I don't miss the G2x. Perhaps the next nexus device will figure out how to utilize a multi-core processor. If so, I'll leave the NS for it.
In the next 2-3 weeks,I will get a galaxy s3(had an s2 but it's stolen). Then I thought about getting a nexus 7 in late september when it's available in my country. It's just that I'm somewhat hesitated to get it.I think that it will be redundant with my phone in a lot of stuff but it's nice for reading and browsing internet. So what do you guys think ? Should I get the s3 and the nexus or just get the s3 and do some upgrades in my pc instead of getting the nexus ? Also would be nice to hear opinions from people who own the nexus 7 and a high-end android phone.
Thanks in forward.
I have a nexus 7 and a HTC Velocity 4G (VIVID/RAIDER) and I mostly purchased the nexus for android development and because I hate HTC sense and I wanted a pure android device, and because I'm not allowed to root my phone (work owns it).
that being said, web browsing, video watching and games are heaps better on the larger screen...
I can see myself getting a crappier phone next time, one that just focuses on having a good tether and excellent battery life, as I use the nexus for almost everything but phone and sms now.
if I had a galaxy sIII personally, I probably would not have gotten the N7, if I had an sIII with work, I probably would have gotten the nexus 7.
I have a g2x and this tablet. Not exactly high end but powerful enough. I really go back and forth. Web browsing and watching movies and reading is better on this, but mobility on my phone is superior.
Ultimately I find I'm using them for different things, which I'm glad about. Basic Web browsing is fine on my phone but videos and reading, the nexus 7 can't be beat.
Sent from my paranoid Nexus 7.
Well it depends on how much you used your android phone to start with, for apps and web browsing ect. If you used it a lot, then yeah you probably should get the N7. It's a bigger screen and easier to play some of the high end apps on.
I hardly use my Xperia for apps, web browsing and videos ect since I bought the N7. (I know its not a high end phone....... )
I have an s3 and a nexus 7. The n7 definitely has value. Its just big enough to make web browsing and things like reading ebooks comfortable. At the same time its still small enough to be quite portable. Sure on paper it doesn't seem like the screen is that much bigger but trust me the extra inch or so in both directions make a massive difference.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Why would owning or not owning a phone affect whether or not you want a tablet?
for the record I have an s3 and an n7....
Any game you play always looks better on a bigger screen! I've fulled up my tab with games GTA / Shadow gun / Batman etc...(each have almost a gig in size data) Don't play those games on my GNEx anymore as they rape the battery. Play games on the tab now and have plenty of battery left when i'm finished the commute - to and from work! Movies and music are on the 32GB flashstick that's used using stickmount. My phone is for on the move quick surfing, calling, texting and whatsapp.
Think the combo of the GNex and Nex7 are 2 peas in a pod for me.
I have the nexus 7 and a HTC sensation. I have to admit that after getting my nexus 7 my phone only gets used to make calls or when I'm somewhere my tablet isn't. The cool thing about the nexus 7 and the s3 is NFC. But the whole beneficiary of NFC is to use it. I am constantly sending things back and forth via bluetooth and it gets annoying to have to pair them up every time. With NFC you can just beam it. Not to mention the fact that you can root your nexus 7 really easily and play around with a whole other ball park. And if I'm correct the screen resolution for wallpapers is the same so if you like making wallpapers or if your just a wallpaper junky you can use the same wallpapers without all the extra effort. I say get the nexus 7. Sure adding to your pc would be nice but how nice would it be to Web browse on the couch and do it right with a tablet rather than your phone. It's nice its comfortable and it's portable. I had the same doubts because my sensation is dual core 4.0 what could I be missing out on? Even if my phone had the same tegra 3 and 4.1 it couldn't measure up. And gaming on it is by far better than on a phone.
But it's good that you've stopped to weigh in the pros and cons. I've listed mostly good things and tried to persuade you to get it simply for that fact that I don't think you'll regret it.
Current devices:
Asus Nexus 7
HTC Sensation 4G
T-Mobile mytouch 3G (HTC Magic) [DISCONTINUED]
When you realize your on xda like it's a full time job.
ok,guys I think you didn't get the point of my question.I know that the nexus 7 is awesome and a lot of things look better on it than on a phone, what I'm trying to say is that when I get the nexus 7,I might just use the s3(a 650$+ phone) for phone calls, listening to music,3G usage(if I'm outside and decided not to take my tablet with me) and taking pics which any mid-rage android phone can do so unless I want to show off that I got the best phone on the market,I see no reason to get the s3 if I will get the nexus 7 or vice versa.

Because as I mentioned above,it may be useless to get such an expensive phone if I will do a lot of stuff like browsing, gaming, reading, watching videos on the nexus 7.Can you tell what you use ur nexus for and what you use ur s3 for ? and how often do you use both of them ?
I really don't use my phone which is the Samsung Galaxy S2 for anything since I got my Nexus 7. Unless I am out of my house other than that I'm always using my Nexus 7 its that good.

Yea thats pretty much what I do with my S3 and N7. The S3 I use to stream music a lot and for pictures. Then at home I usually only carry around the Nexus 7 using tablet talk so i can leave my S3 in my room.
It really just depends what device you have right now. I was over my Droid charge so i needed to upgrade before unlimited data went away. Plus the S3 is so smooth and seemless. I dont charge the thing for 2 days sometimes. Its just a phone I dont have to think about. I dont have to worry about having an extended battery, or if its going to work with my current apps well.
but in a nutshell - At home in Wifi All N7.
When Out - S3..
Yea its kind of a waste to have both, but thats the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.
Its really up to you man. Nobody can make that decision but you. Yes the N7 is technically a large android phone without phone capabilities, but its soooo nice lol. I just brought my Evo LTE a few months ago and couldn't wait to get my hands on a N7. My LTE used to be my go to device but now I only find myself using it for calls and text. The 7" screen is alot bigger than it sounds so the N7 is alot better for just about everything. I'm a techie so I don't really need a reason to buy a new gadget. I upgrade pretty much every electronic device I own when I can. Next up my PC! Out with the 980x in with the 3930k! If its cool then I want it (unless its made by apple) lol.

I'm using an old nokia n81 now because my s2 was stolen,I used to use the s2 A LOT.I had to charge it once in the middle of the day and leave it charging before sleeping...Heavy usage is not good for AMOLED screens specially the one on the s2 lol.
I'm new to the forums here and I have the HTC One X (ATT) and I've come to hate the lack of support of it and also all of the control ATT has over the updates. So I started looking into the Nexus 4 and just wanted see how satisfied or unsatisfied actual users were with their Nexus 4. So please comment and share your thoughts!
I am satisfied with my Nexus 4. Being using for 2 weeks and it's the best your money can buy.
If storage and glass aren't a big deal, then this phone is the best choice.
PS Ordered the second one on 27th for my bro. I love it SOOO much!

No I order through the Play store and use tmobile pre-paid's $30 plan. Works for me. I also have Sprint, which my family uses.
Love my nexus 4... Official cm10. Official PA. official AOKP. Franco and Faux kernels...
Gorgeous 768p IPS. Luxury feel in the hand. Amazingly slick curved display (defiantly don't want to drop this phone)
Meh camera (still great though, just not exciting) and some thermal throttling (being worked on)...
Lte is a non issue as hspa± is plenty fast. I mean, it loads YouTube, music, xda all instantly. Its not like we are doing real time video games and 1080p video streaming (just runs down my data plan quicker)

You really make some valid points. Camera on my HTC One X is nothing crazy either. (pretty sure they have the same specs?) I'd also like to get into modding my phone and I think the Nexus would make it easy but I honestly have no idea what I would be doing. Hahaha. How do I learn more about it because I'm a complete newb.
Awesome phone, I completely love it. Don't need LTE either. External SD would have made this phone too good to be true.

I got the N4 in the mail the Monday after it came out. I too am coming from the AT&T HTC One X. I used the N4 for about a week straight before deciding to break out the ol' One X (just for a change of pace). Quite frankly, it would be hard for me to give up the N4 for the HOX now.
The HOX is a great phone, but the N4 just makes it feel slow in comparison. Maybe I'm spoiled by the speed of the N4, but I just felt like I had to wait forever to do basic things on the One X (running the latest ViperROM, btw). The HOX has better battery life, for sure, and the camera is better. I miss those two things the most. The HOX still has the best screen out there (other than the Droid DNA), but the N4 really isn't far behind. Once a few color control apps come out for the N4, my guess is that I won't really miss the screen as much. For what it's worth, I forgot just how big the HOX's screen is. When they say 4.7", they mean it. The N4 has a 4.7" screen too, but it's probably more like a 4.5" once the on-screen buttons are considered. But the additional width is really nice and almost makes up for it. I don't have LTE anywhere near me where I live, so that's irrelevant to me. I don't travel much either.
Here's my summary.
HTC One X:
- slightly better, arguably bigger screen
- better battery
- better camera (in terms of picture quality; the software is on par with the N4)
- smaller development community, although they're doing a great job imo
- poor multitasking on Sense roms (works fine on AOSP roms)
N4:
- stock Android
- blazes through any task you throw at it
- AT&T doesn't control your phone
- easier to root, flash roms, kernels, etc.
- future proof with quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM
I am fully satisfied with my Nexus 4. I love my One X, but I will not be going back to it any time soon, most likely.
I've actually been with the iPhone since the 3GS when I came into the smartphone world. I read up about this and decided to give it a try from the 4S I was using, and I'm really enjoying the Nexus 4.
I'm still a bit apprehensive to give up iOS since I've been with it for so long--still haven't sold my 4S--but I have a feeling I'll be sticking with this phone for a while. The larger screen real-estate is also much nicer to have in general. I'm torn!

I feel like you and me are one in the same! The only thing I do miss is the amount of iPhone users. All my friends and family have one... Which makes me miss iMessage and group texting :/
You are on the forums and mentioned your problems with the 1X community's lack of activity.
I like the screen, but other phones have better screens which are also better calibrated. I like the camera, but indoor photos have very inaccurate white balance.
Connectivity is good (I'm using a $10 MEdia Net plan from AT&T and have used over 2GB every month and one month even went over 12GB cause my Internet was out), and I'm getting 500KB/s average (~4Mbps). Battery life is also good; I get about a day of moderate use and 6-7 hours of literally constant, active use. I am really hurting from the lack of storage as I do a lot of reporting and don't always have time to transfer the interview recordings. I do a lot of work away from a PC and need to be able to quickly seek tracks, so I have to keep he audio on internal memory.
By most people's standard, I'm very careful with my phone. I consider my usage to be of common sense and responsible practice. The Gorilla Glass is very scratch resistant, but I'm sure a few encounters with silicate and a hard surface would leave a mark.
But really, all of these things pale in comparison to one criterion: the development community. I came from a Galaxy S and the community was amazing. Though the HP Touch Pad was well known, it apparently wasn't popular enough to garner a lot of dev support and those forums are fairly sparse.
By getting a Nexus phone, you know that the every dev is prioritizing your phone over any other model they might be working on as well. Cyanogen posted. AOKP posted. Moles posted. These are the respective heads of the three best teams this community has to offer. Check their post history. They don't appear in too many other phones' forums; they usually have teammates do that. But for the Nexus 4, they want to be the ones posting. That says a lot.
And a lot of other devs know this about the community heads' devotion to the newest Nexus model. They are locked in to a N4 for the major dev support, but will also provide their own amateur, but very valuable, contributions as well.
I'm sure the 1X is a great phone. I'm sure the 1X+ is a great phone. Same goes for the DNA, Optimus G, and other leading smartphones out there. But the N4 attracts the biggest development teams, and in turn attracts smaller developers. It kind of feeds on itself, with regard to popularity. None of these other phones have so much 3rd party support going on for them.
So, if you are looking for the absolute best hardware, maybe you should keep looking (keep the N4 in mind, though). If you're looking for flexibility, know that your stuck with one battery on the road and can't expand the meager storage provided. But if your looking for ROMs, kernels, and tweaks that let you customize the phone exactly how you want it, and maximize the potential of the hardware, then look no further.
The Nexus 4 subforums are truly the promised land.

Couldn't have said it better. The best devs are working on this phone (provided if they could get one) and that is the exciting part of Nexus4. Trumps all other phones out there.
It might seem very complicated at once if you are not familiar with Android, but it's actually quite simple. And people are always there to help. I'm looking forward to at least 1 great year with this phone.
==========
And the fact that I am the only one I know are using it makes it super cool. I have several friends who know of N4 but didn't purchase one all liked the phone after I showed them. Their impression was the speed and the screen.
A friend asked me to purchase an iPhone for him since I'm going back to China soon. While in Apple Store, I took out my phone and google talk'ed with him. I can't help but notice the "Genius" looking at me. And signing on that 3.5' tiny screen is just ridiculous. I paid half the price for what he is gonna pay for that piece of gadget, but I don't even have the desire to try out the iPhone 5 in their store.
When I got my N4 I was stunned at the slim look and mild colors. I wasn't sure if I'd like it after being on an SGS2 for over a year. I've gotten to where I really love everything about the phone, except the signal.. It sucks.
I can hold the phone next to my Nexus 7 or Galaxy Tab 10.1 and where I would normally get full bars of Wifi signal, I get 1 bar if I am lucky. The cellular signal is terrible as well. Living in Florida with hurricane glass and Double block walls - my SGS2 got really good signal, this thing is just garbage. If you rely on good signal, its not for you..
The touch sensitivity on the on-screen buttons at the lower portion of the phone seem to be not so great, other than that and the signal issues everything else is excellent..
I'm very happy with my 8GB

Like you, I previously owned a at&t htc one x as well. I ordered my nexus 4 on the 13th and have been using it for a couple of weeks now. Since then, I have sold my htc one x.
to be completely honest, i have to say i liked the camera and screen combination of the htc one x better. Colors on the htc one x were brilliant and vivid, while the nexus 4 screen seemed to look dull. this is all personal preference, but i prefer the 'over-saturated' look.
speed on the nexus 4 is a lot faster compared to sense, but when i had cm10 on my htc one x it wasnt a slouch either.
in terms of aesthetics, they are both beautiful in their own ways. i quite liked the htc's design, but i agree on the lack of support, with the nexus you are guaranteed at least a couple of updates, (just look at the nexus s, got 4.1)
here's my advice to you: as nice as the nexus 4 is, if there is nothing wrong with you htc one x, dont upgrade. If you want jellybean 4.2 and dont want to wait for the update, root your HOX and put cm10 on it.
I was able to sell my HOX for $260 and my nexus 4 was $340 after taxes/shipping.
I for one am very happy with my Gnex4...Ive had every phone that came out this year...just sold my note 2 which was a pure beast if I must say but this nexus have a more snappier feeling as far as speed and etc...plus development is going crazy for this phone which is a big +....but overall this is the best phone on the market hands down...with the note 2 very close behind...
If so, thoughts and opinions? I've had the LGOG since the 5th of November, and I'm seriously considering selling and grabbing the N4...

This requires more of an depth response than I currently have time for, I'll post again later tonight. Very quickly, I really like the LGOG, but I just have some niggles that are killing me, and most of them I *think* would be solved on the N4.

I haven't tried the LGOG but they are essentially the same internal components except the LGOG has what I hear is a pretty mediocre 13 megapixel camera. I don't like the LGOG design because it's more square-ish and the rounded look of the Nexus 4 is much better but that is a matter of taste. Stock JB could solve some of your problems if they are software related, from what I hear Motorola's and LG's android skins are not very good.
Havent had the Otimus G but it looks like a very very good phone...But if you switch to the N4 you wont regret it...Development is gonna go crazy for this phone...theres so many Devs that I know that are coming to this phone who are just waiting to get one...this N4 forum is already great with very helpful people and its only gonna get better so if you looking to tweak and rom out...this is the spot...believe me!!!

AT&T LGOG has the 8MP cam, as well as an SD slot, and LTE. I thought the AT&T LGOG looked better than the N4, but I haven't held an N4. LG's Android skin is okay. Not as intrusive as Sense, but not as silly as Touchwiz. I never use the stock launcher on a phone, so with the LG you can't notice it much.
I don't have LTE around here, so that's not an issue. Performance wise the AT&T LGOG is superb for the most part. Even with ICS. Its the smoothest/fastest Android device I've used. (I've used a TON, all the big players except the new DNA)
HUGE deal breaker for me is the notification LED on the AT&T LGOG. Its a small ring around the power button. Can't see it. Ever. Also its not multi-colored. Then you put a case on it, even the Belkin bumper, and its completely covered up. Gone.
My WiFi performance is horrible. The range seems very short, and it never wants to automatically connect. Not just my home network, but several others. Then when I manually try to do something, it usually gets stuck in a half off/half on state, and I have to reboot. This could be a software issue that could very easily get fixed in the future.
A lot of us are having insane battery issues. Myself, if I'm SUPER lucky, I get 10hrs. Android OS is always at the top, by far. The screen isn't ever at the top no matter how much you use it. Some are saying its a 3G fast dormancy issue. I've got LTE disabled. I'm also running a no bloat ROM, with a kernel that's under-volted. Again, software issues that are probably going to be fixed eventually.
Which brings me to my last issue. Dev support. The bootloader is unlocked, and that's awesome. If you look in the dev section, we have ONE rom. If you look in the Original dev section, we have ONE kernel. I have no idea if the AT&T version is going to take off or not, but its off to the slowest start I've ever seen on a new device of this caliber. Also I'm missing JB. I'm really REALLY missing AOKP. Some of the best times I ever had on an Android device was my GNex w/AOKP.
So this is where I'm at. Give up a better looking phone (yes yes, debatable) LTE, (which I don't have anyway) and the SD slot, to gain a MUCH better notification LED, JB 4.2, WAY WAY more dev support, and obviously faster updates. (I've had Nexus phones before, hell I still have an N1)
Thoughts?

Design is a matter of taste, agree there.
I gave up LTE. I had 15-20 Mbps and now I have 3-7 Mbps. I only notice the difference when I try to download big files. I can barely notice the difference when I watch HD videos. My brother has a Nexus 4 on T-mobile and he averages 15-20 Mbps. I am in San Diego BTW.
I got the 8GB version and I don't need more than that. I carry an iPhone 3G as a PMP and I just got a $50 HTC One V that I am switching to. I am trying to move my Music and Videos to the cloud but the slower data is a little bump in the road.
I think LG HAD to make a top of the line phone for AT&T so they came out with the LGOG but knew that it wasn't going to sell too well. I still haven't seen an add for one. I am pretty sure that the average consumer does not go into the store with the knowledge of the LGOG even existing.
The Nexus 4 is probably going to be one of the top 3 phones with dev support, probably only behind the GS3. Since the LGOG from AT&T doesn't even seem to be the same version from other GSM version you can bet there's going to be a VERY small dev support.
They are identical hardware, sans LTE. But in the very beginning the N4 was having throttling issues and low benches for all the reviewers. Not that benches mean anything for real word usage. How's it feel?

Someone said that benches were probably not optimized for the hardware and 4.2, haven't tried myself or seen any new benches.
I like it. The device feels solid. I never owned a Gnex but it felt plasticy just like most Samsung device including my old Note. I am really not concerned about the glass but I take REALLY good care of all my devices. I like the design. I always put a case on my phones but I like this design too much to cover it up so I just got screen protectors for the front and back. I hear people saying it scratches if you put it on a counter but then again doesn't all glass scratch? The software is fast, smooth, snappy, etc... It's stock, it's great. I haven't even found a reason to install a different ROM.
Device feels very great...super fast...no lag at all...Im very happy I decided to go for the N4...I have no complaints at all...

I'm gettting about 6mbps down with the LGOG. As long as the N4 gets close to that, I'm fine. I'm on WiFi most of the day.
You haven't seen the commercial with the guy making the action scene in a movie w/the AT&T LGOG? I've seen it several times. But, NO one around me knows about the LGOG, the SGSIII is the big one right now. ( I had the international version on launch day, great phone) I get asked all the time "why did you get of your SGSIII???" as they look at me like a befuddled puppy.
I would think the N4 should be THE top dev phone, its a Nexus after all? (phone for devs) The GNex dev section was nuts.

Yeah, I stopped using cases awhile back, and started using Ghost Armor. But with this phone I didn't wanna cover it up, so it got nothing. Then I found the Belkin bumper case, and tried that. Not bad, but I wouldn't do it again. Personally I like the glass. Gives it a spiffier, heavier feel. But then again I liked the thin light feel of the SGS2, Gnex, and SGS3. I'm not real picky about style/feel. Although I can't stand HTC's layout. The power button on top makes me want to throw the phone. (I did like the One X though, other than the power button and Sense)
I am however a flash/customization-aholic. I was really banking on the AT&T LGOG dev support taking off more than it has.

I am a big smart phone fan in general but even I didn't know about the LGOG until people started saying that the Nexus 4 was going to be pretty much the same thing as the LGOG. Maybe I did hear about it but I didn't care, I wasn't too happy when I heard LG was making the next Nexus device. LG is just not too good at marketing their products and making customers even consider getting an LG product. If you don't get LTE in your area then I think the Nexus 4 is a no brainer. You may even get faster speeds on HSPA+, some people get about 10-15 Mbps on their Nexus 4. I am in an LTE market so I am screwed, AT&T is not going to develop their HSPA+ network anymore here.
Yeah I'm leaning towards getting the N4. I wish someone who's had both could post. The LED and JB w/dev support alone is enough to convert me. LTE is useless, and I will slightly miss the SD slot.
Any WiFi or battery issues?
I see you can actually order one now, but its 6-7 weeks out!! It will be old news by then!

from what I hear Motorola's and LG's android skins are not very good.

This is outdated. Starting with the Optimistic G, LG's skin is now in "Not Awful, But Bulky" territory, and Motorola's skin is actually quite good (starting with the Atrix HD and other ICS-based devices), and provides some genuine functional improvement on AOSP without any real downsides.
