Hey guys I'm having some trouble with my Nexus 4 that i've never faced with any of my previous android devices. Any idea or help would be appreciated but before jumping in some quick background info.
I received the Nexus 4 on the 21st so last Wednesday. Since then it has been running the stock rom, the only difference is I rooted it. Besides that nothing else has been tweaked no kernel, rom, etc. The device had been running perfectly, I do not play intensive games, never ran any benchmark, etc. Just call, text, Facebook, xda, and other simple apps.
Now the issue. Today at work I received a text, when i attempted to turn on my phone nothing happened. Thinking it had frozen I held the power button to restart it but once again nothing happened. I couldn't do much because I was at work, I just got home and tried charging it thinking somehow the battery died (although it was at 80 percent). My qi charger recognizes it and supposedly charged. I tried turning it on but once again nothing. I finally connected it to my computer and it comes up on the device manager as QHSUB_DLOAD

Same here, last Sunday I turned my device off and since then I am not able to get it back on again. It has been off the charger now for a night hoping some rest would do the trick, nothing. Same as for a night on the charger, nothing happens. Its completely dead apart from a red led when I press the power button for 10 seconfs and the QHUSB_DLOAD I see when connecting it to my PC. Not rooted or anything
What method did you use to unlock and root the phone?

This happens randomly about 5x a day. When I try to put my phone away (press red button) the screen turns off (like it should) but immediately turns back on again.... all on its own. The screen wont stay off so it drains my battery.
The only way to make it stop is to plug the phone into a charger. Eventually it stops... But, the problem comes back later in the day. Its a struggle I'm facing throughout the day... ugh!!
Any ideas? I've tried restarting, soft reset, taking the battery out for long periods of time... nothing works!
THX!
Couple of questions.
Has this been happening since the day you got it?
Are you using the stock battery?
Have you flashed a custom rom?
What apps have you installed?
Any damage to the phone?
Have you spilled any liquid on it?
Are any of the buttons (volume, windows key, home, etc.) possible stuck down?

It started doing this about a week or so ago. I have a Pandora, Shazam, pretty simple apps... nothing crazy.
Yes it is the stock battery.
I have not updated or installed any custom ROMS... although I am looking into it.
No Damage to the phone
No liquid damage
And I doubt the buttons are stuck... ive checked.
my first thought is that you have some app running that is waking up the phone. have you tried (i know it's a pain) uninstalling any apps you've added recently? When your phone wakes up is it locked as it should be?
yes, the phone is locked when it wakes itself up. I've tried uninstalling the very few apps I have installed... no luck. Do you think a ROM change my help? Been looking into installing the Kumor Rom. thx again
Hi. I have the same problem for almost 2 months. I have loaded 3 different roms but nothing changed. I dont know what to do
tmo replaed my batt
I had this same exact problem last month. Called TMO support and after a couple questions, the dude told me he would send me a new battery....I was skeptical, but thought hey, why not...got nothing to lose. I replaced the battery as soon as the new one arrived and the problem went away instantly! have not had this occur for a month(fingers still crossed). Like I said, I was skeptical, but the new batt worked for me. I didn't have to send back the old battery, so just for S&G's, I put the old batt back in and the problem returned after a full charge.....go figure. Call up TMO and see if you can get a new batt. BTW...my ROM is totally stock and only have CHT installed...no other 3rd party apps of any kind.
hmmm im calling them today. I'll let you all know what turns up!
To follow up...
I talked to a Tmobile rep (via their chat support on tmobile.com) and after answering a few questions I got them to send me a replacement phone. Although I'll have to pay for the shipping myself, I'm glad to know I wont have the issue anymore.
I'll let you all know if something else comes up.
Hi all,
My first post here and I'm posting it at a pretty depressing mood.
I've just bought my phone from the states and brought it back to Hong Kong for my own use. Last night, I've been toying it for a couple hours with everything going perfectly fine, but suddenly the phone turned itself off. Everytime I try to turn it on the phone just turns itself back off again. I couldn't do anything.
Has anyone come across the same problem? I've done a hard reset but to no avail, the phone still shuts down right after turning on, it's pretty frustrating to turn on your phone just to see it telling you it's turning off, really frustrating tbh.
I've called google and requested for a replacement so problem's kinda solved for the moment. I just want to know if I'm alone here because I've pressed the operator a couple times and she refused to tell me if mine was an isolated incident or not, for obvious reasons.
I haven't done anything to the phone except installing a couple apps like Aldiko, whatsapp, facebook and a Chinese keyboard (since I'm Asian apparently). I've installed all of them in my old phone and none of them caused any problems so I just want to know if I'm alone and what do you guys think the root of the problem is, or solutions to it if there are any.
Thanks a lot!

Mine is happening the samething, glad Im not alone. My was running fine on rooted Modaco custom rom for a few weeks then all of sudden the phone auto shut down like it has its mind. I installed Cantonese keyboard and camera mod too and some other apps. Currently Im tracking down the source. Now I have franco kernel and madaco rom on clean install running with no other app install to see if it will shut down or not. If it does Im going back to stock to see if samething happen.
I have to boot it couple times until it doesnt shut down itself anymore. Sometimes it be stable for couple hours or couple minutes or instantly.
I have the same problem, Just got my phone from google everything is stock nothing has been changed and the phone just turns it self off and then i cant turn it back on for sometime.
Does anyone know what causing this problem?
Mine also turns off multiple times a day, sometimes by itself, sometimes during a call, often when taking a picture.
Today every single time I took a picture it would shut down.
I'm f*cking pissed at waiting 5 weeks to get a useless phone... and god know how long it will take to get a replacement if I ca get one.
Hi guys, I have the same problem too
I've used my Nexus 4 for 2 weeks without any kind of problem when suddenly it turned itself off. If I try to turn it on, the phone just turns itself back off again and I haven't solved the problem even with a reset.
But I've noticed that the battery doesn't charging even with the charging cable. I think the phone detects that hasn't enough battey level and for that reason turns itself back off.
Do you think it can be an harware or software problem?
Damn - i have recently been having the same problem! It only happens (so far) when i'm charging the phone overnight. I wake up and it's off and takes a few tries to get it running again. I'm rooted with stock. Does this mean we all need replacements? Ugh!

The exact same thing happened to me as well. I charged it overnight, unplugged it and it was off. I couldn't even turn it on again - I had to keep holding the power button for ~15 seconds plus try plugging/unplugging the phone to the charger etc. and it finally powered on. I orginally thought it may have been a kernel issue since I had just flashed Franco r29. However, looking at his thread, nobody had that issue.
I'm glad I'm not alone but this issue really worries me, especially if it is a hardware fault. Google will replace it but I don't feel like going through the fuss since God knows when the replacement will arrive. I hope this get's 'magically' fixed as it has only happened to me once so far.

You know, I'm looking at my battery history (using battery monitor) and i see the period that the phone was shut down and then when i powered it back up this morning and i notice the battery temp is extremely high so it probably has to do with the phone shutting down due to overheating, which obviously shouldn't happen. I wasn't using the oem charger, so I'll switch to that for the time being and keep an eye on temp. Hopefully it's a software bug and not a faulty battery because it should definitely be cutting off charging when it reaches 100%.

So my phone has started having random issues. Running stock rooted 4.3 and have only flashed an LTE enabler.
This morning I received a text, but when I tried to read it, I got an error that messaging had stopped. I hit okay, error came back when I tried to read the message again, it did this several times before I rebooted the phone with quick boot. A little later in the day, same problem with maps. Then I made a phone call and when I hung up, the system ui stopped. Had to power down phone.
I also noticed last night while trying to charge it in my car, it didn't seem too be connected. The charging text on the lock screen was like flickering. I thought it was the charging cable or USB lighter adapter. Grabbed a charger and appeared to be working, but was noticing the same problem with the charger.
Anyone heard of this before? Are they related? Haven't download anything recently, but maybe something updates? Not sure what direction to go to try too fix.
I have this same issue and mine happens sometimes while its charging I found out. Basically all the Google apps stop working including settings now I can access any other app just not the Google apps. The only fix is to reboot the phone. I wish my phone was still rooted so I could use logcat and hopefully catch whatever is causing this.

Have you tried different roms?
Nope, stock ROM 4.3
Bump?
Haven't had the issue with any apps closing. But it still don't charge with my car chargers. I briefly tried with a charger at home, but didn't notice the issue.
That's what mine started doing right before I got the flashing red LED of death. Sent it back for a refurb.

I tried posting this in the Sprint thread but haven't gotten any answers yet so perhaps I'll have better luck here. I pasted both posts to show the initial problem and what I did (essentially I factory reset). I'm still having the same problem where my phone will freeze while I'm charging it (about 2-3 times/week) requiring a battery pull. Anybody else seeing this problem or have suggestions on what I should try? Thanks.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Twice this week my alarm didn't go off (luckily I set a backup today) because sometime throughout the night something happened. When I woke up the phone was frozen on the yellow Sprint Spark startup screen. I needed to pull the battery and everything started up fine. I updated to Lollipop about 2 weeks ago which is where I'm guessing the issues stem from.
Is there anything I should try other than restoring to factory and starting over? I'd prefer to not have to wipe everything from my phone but these issues are becoming problematic. I am not rooted.
Thanks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
So I ended up doing a factory reset and while the phone certainly started running faster with better battery performance after the reset I'm still having this issue. I would say it occurs 2-3 times a week. It has only occurred overnight which is typically when I charge my phone so I'm pretty sure it is related to being left connected to the charger. The majority of the times I will wake up with a dim yellow Sprint screen and everything else frozen though occasionally the screen will be black with the led notification light red. In both situations the screen will not respond to any button pushes or holds and I need to pull the battery and then everything will start up fine.
Does anybody have any suggestions here on what I should do? I guess I can try and restore one more time and see but I don't really know why it would be different and it is certainly a pain to keep restoring the phone and losing all my settings. I definitely don't want to root now since I believe that voids the warranty and if I can't figure anything out with this I'll certainly be requesting a new phone from Sprint. Before I start dealing with Sprint though I thought I would check here first. Through all my searches on the internet I haven't seen anyone else complaining about this problem.
Thanks.

Hi there. I have a Canadian Note 4 (W8) with Bell, and I am having identical issues.
While charging over night, I find my phone stuck on "Samsung" logo, with the bubble animal still running. Holding down the power button does nothing and the only work around is the battery pull. I noticed that it also gets warm (assuming from the screen on time?)
First tried cache wipe - no fix
Factory reset - no fix
Cache wipe again - no fix
Aaaand today I came into work late

Definitely after the upgrade.
While on KitKat, it never happened (1 month ownership). But after upgrading to lollipop, it has happened 4 times (6 nights since lollipop).
Have you figured anything out with your situation? Woke up this morning to my backup alarm and the Yellow Sprint screen on my phone.
I guess I'll have to try another factory reset and if it still happens try and get a replacement. It just doesn't seem widespread enough of an issue to be a software bug with 5.0.1.
Very frustrated. I did another factory reset but the issue still plagues my device. It still only occurs once or twice a week but when I hear my old clock radio alarm in the morning I know when I look over I'll see the yellow frozen Sprint Spark screen. I am completely out of ideas and guess I will need to have it replaced under warranty. I'm hoping Sprint won't give me a hard time as this will be very hard to demonstrate.
It definitely appears to be a software issue as it never happened before I upgraded to Lollipop but there must be more to it or others would be complaining.
If anybody has ideas please let me know. Thanks.
Response to Note 4 Freeezing while charging
I have found that after turning the quick charge feature off the problem is not happening. Hopefully this is fixed in 5.1
I'm having the same issue even after turning quick charge off..def a lollipop bug, never experienced this on kk.
I know its not the BEST option, but after taking the update to lollipop, sometimes left over kitkat files can make the system poop out. Sometimes a factory reset will take care of the leftovers. But of course, then you have to set your phone up again
If you've tried this or plan to to, let us know the results.
(When i first took the update, my heartrate monitor sensor was always on, so i did a factory reset and it fixed my problem).
Solved with workaround!!!
I faced this "sleep of death" too after updating to Lollipop. I had to pull out the battery almost every time after charging. Very annoying! I noticed though that my phone never froze in my car while charging. Thinking about the difference I realised that I keep my phone awake in the car while charging using Macrodroid (which I love anyway to automise all kinds of things). I made a simple macro which keeps my phone awake while charging and another one that returns the phone to normal while on battery.
While charging: Trigger: Power Connected; Actions: Keep Device Awake enabled & Screen Off, Constraints: None
On Battery: Trigger: Power Disconnected; Actions: Keep Device Awake disabled & Screen Off, Constraints: None
Off course there are alternatives available to Macrodroid that should be able to do the same.
My problems are solved, with and without fast charging. I hope this will help some of you as well.
same problem here
Ive tried turning off fast charging option on the powersaving mode
And also tried the option on developer mode, the "keep device awake while charging"
And even flashing dofferent firmwares from sammobile through ODIN and installed custom roms. These options doesnt resolve the issues on freezing while charging..
I think turnong off your device while charging is the only option..
Im using note4 N910C..

Thanks a lot, Mate. I'm trying your workaround now. Will report later if it works on my phone. BTW, so, are you sure it is a just a system issue? Definitely, isn't a hardware problem? Did you fix it, after your post -a month ago-, installing, for example, lollipop 5.1.1 or Cyanogenmod 12.1? I'm on 5.0.1, SimpleRom V4. Of course, mi device, N910C, is rooted.
Thanks again.
With lollipop 5.1.1 the problem is solved for me, even without this workaround.

I'm having similar issues as you guys. I found out that my phone will only perform normally when I charge it with my laptop USB port which I think is around 0.5amps. Anything above that, even a 1amp charger would cause the phone to freeze, reboot and turn off and not turn back on. The phone has been in repair 4 times and the problem is still there. Now every night I'm forced to charge my phone with my laptop which takes an age instead of the fast charger that came out of the box.
Currently my phone is still freezing and rebooting when I'm out and about and the only way I can get it to perform normally is when I plug it into my laptop. This normal functioning would only last whilst the phone is plugged in.
I was on chrome scrolling down a page yesterday, when the phone froze and went black. I haven't been able to turn it on or put it in recovery since. Does anyone know what happened to it? It was on the at&t network. Never froze up before that. I was running the 6.0.1 dragon screwed rom (I think). I loved my nexus. Any help or info would be appreciated.

Try plugging your phone into your computer and see if it's recognized, also try pushing the power button down for a long time (up to 2-3 minutes)
I tried the power button for 5 minutes 3 times and still nothing. I also plugged it into a computer and it's not recognized. I miss it already

Call Google. Mine was out of warranty but they did do a one time courteousy replacement.
Talked to Google earlier and they are gonna send a refurbished nexus 6p to replace mine. Probably gonna make it my backup when the pixel 2 comes out.
