[Q] Playing videos via OTG on flash drive - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not sure why this is so difficult, or if I'm missing something entirely easy, but I have no idea what the problem is. I've got two videos on my 64 GB flash drive right now, one is an .mp4, one is .mkv. I have Stickmount pro, and I'm not sure if it's working properly.
As of now, my file explorers aren't showing anything on the USB drive (though they were earlier), however VLC will show the files and play them (sort of). The .mkv lags slightly (it's only 720p), and the .mp4 plays a few frames then stops changing frames. The .mp4 played just fine earlier on a different player, but that player doesn't handle .mkv's. MX Player isn't recognizing anything on the drive at all, even after I've added it to be scanned for media.
From what I can tell the flash drive and OTG cable are working fine, I'm just not sure how to proceed from here. I'm tempted to try NMI, but I don't want to buy another app for this if I don't need to since I already have stickmount.

You need to be rooted and have a custom ROM/Kernel.
You'll need this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998585
Stickmount isn't needed. It probably hasn't been updated yet.

I am rooted, and the drive is FAT32 (if that matters). However, a custom ROM/kernel is 100% necessary? In that case, what will I have to do to play videos? Will the players and file managers not have issues reading the drive and playing them?

Try this, and look around on this forum for it's discussion thread.

Dont need to be rooted. Use nexus media importer and then chose which program to play videos with. I use a nightly build of vlc.

I'm rooted and I use stickmount.
This way I was able to play from a USB stick...

Im not rooted and use one excellent piece of software called "Nexus Media Importer" I think it cost 1 or 2 quid !! But it is one excellent, hassle free way to use external storage. Its also clean to use. It is available on the play store.
I have successfully used it on:
Nexus 7
Nexus 10
SGS 3
OTG cable + 32GB storage!
and NO ROOTING required. Well worth it.
You can either copy to local storage OR stream !
:good:

What I found was that I had to use ES File Explorer with Stick mount for the best results. Usually is use FX File Explorer, but I had to open the app THEN mount my drive for it to show anything on the drive.
As far as playing movies direct, your flash drive may not be quick enough. I usually move the movie to my device from my flash drive prior to playing it and delete when I'm done. This way I eliminate the speed issue.
You can also flash craiggomez's ROM and have native OTG support without need for stick mount. It actually works smoother than stickmount IMO.

I have a 16GB N10 and use a 1TB portable HDD to store all my movies... being 16GB it's not capable of holding some BR rips so I play them from the drive... There's no lag or stuttering at all so moving a file isn't needed unless, maybe, if the device being used is a USB 1 device. My HDD is USB 3, but I believe the OTG cables are 2 and the N10 may be 2 as well.
Also, as a note to the OP, keep in mind that you're limited by file size when using FAT32 so you won't be able to put videos on the drive that are high enough quality to really show off the N10 unless they're under 3GB (i think is the limit)

I formatted the drive to NTFS, however the file explorers and now VLC still do not show anything on the drive when using Stickmount. Decided to give NMI a try, and it worked flawlessly. MX Player streamed the 720p .mkv with audio (had to use s/w decoder for audio) without a problem.

Glad to here its working, should be able to use VLC too, i had to for 1080p.

Fat32 max file size is 4g (2^32). So you will Need NTFS for good quality .mkvs.
Youre only able to read files in NTFS AS far as there were no updates. But for streaming mkvs there shouldnt be a problem. The reading speed of i think every USB 2 stick is faster than 5mb/s so its Speer shohldnt be a Problem either. Also i read multiple times that there is no Problem streaming 1080p via otg. For me it Loks like a Hardware issue. At least i cant think of anything else starring At the working devices trying with the same setup

[Q] deploying soon, wanting some advice on how to do a few things.

Hey gang going to be deploying for the rest of the year soon and would like to be able to hook up an external USB hard drive loaded with movies to my a500 and watch them on the tablet. My question is will an external USB drive even mount or read on android (never tried don't own one) and if so what format will I need movies in and what software would you guys recommend for DVD ripping.
Thanks in advance
v/r
Btw, I'm rooted running Dexter 3.1 hc
Lucky for you, you bought the only tablet that will connect to a usb hd.
video foramts for the iconia are H.264 BP/MP/HP, MPEG-4, H.263
best dvd ripper I have no idea.
If you've already got HD vids, I suggest you download handbrake and download this setting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVBpeQNWbEQ and convert your videos that way.
As for DVD ripping you could do a search for ripit4me or something similar.
Thanks for the quick responses, looking up rippers now
I have a WD 1TB drive, NTFS formatted. The tablet will not see it without a little legwork, but the legwork is fairly easy.
Root it with Gingerbreak (since you're already rooted, that's for others that need the info), then install one of a couple different apps. Since mine is NTFS (large file support) I then installed NTFS Mount. I link up the drive, run NTFS Mount, pick the drive then click the mount button. In a couple moments I'm browsing the drive from the USB Storage link in my favorite file manager and movies galore.
As for file formats, it will also deal with AVI, DivX and other file formats by installing Mobo Player, which comes with additional codec packs to deal with other files types.
I've been using DVD Catalyst for all my ripping needs.
And since I'm a veteran and have seen my abundant share of deployments (1st Gulf War, 3 tours in Korea, etc), stay safe out there brother! OO-RAH!

Excellent advice! Thanks mate!
Ok... I got a 1TB WD "my passport" the USB 3.0/USB 2.0 one. I formatted it to fat32 with a utility from Verbatim. (find fat 32 formatter in google Verbatim worked for me) Once I got it formatted on my PC I copied the 2 or 300 videos/movies I have... Most of my videos are encoded in XVID or DIVX but I have WMV and MP4's too. When I first plugged it into the Acer it simply flashed and I thought it wasn't working but on the next try I let it flash until it finally stopped flashing (about 70 seconds) then I was able to browse the drive with file expert. I downloaded MOBO Player which will play about any file type that I throw at it... there is a file browser in MOBO Player that will let you find the file you want to play. This mind you, is all done without rooting or doing any thing difficult... formatting to fat32 has its drawbacks but at that time there wasn't any ntfs driver programs that I knew about.
Wish you well with this great tab!

You can also try rockplayer, it can play virtually every kind of video file out there (certainly all the ones I tried), so you might save some time from converting them. Just keep in mind that to open file extensions not supported natively by android you have to go through rockplayer itself rather than a file explorer.
And just to add something small to timehunter's comment, if you use NTFS Mount (which is a great app and works with every hdd I tried), your hard disk will appear as "sda1". When you select it and click mount, it will be viewable under /mnt/sda1.
*Edit*: The new version in the market is called Drive Mount, not NTFS Mount. It is still free and still as good (and more). However, make sure you have busybox installed, as some root methods don't include it automatically, like the stock 3.1 root.
I've been using DVDFab for ripping and Handbrake for converting; the newer version of DVDFab's conversion tool wasn't at all stable the last time I checked it out (thankfully before paying for it, yay for trialware.)
Where
Where can I find ntfs mount? I can't find it at the market. Thanks

just wanted to say thanks. Got a Seagate goflex 1 TB USB 2.0 drive at best buy for 99$, DVD catalyst 4 for 10$ from toolsformovies.com and it worked great. Ripped "Seven" using the predefined Xoom HQ2 1080p filter (output was in .mp4) took 2.5 hrs but looks excellent in moboplayer.

+1 for moboplayer! I have a bunch of WMV v8 encoded files and before moboplayer I was staring in the face the need to transcode them all to some other codec. No need now!
And thank you for your service, Scott.

[Q] small question regarding video compatibility

Hi, I just bought the Iconia and I've been playing with its clear.fi app. It's not perfect, but nice for music, and I would like to use it for movies as well. Unfortunately, it won't show me any of the movies I have on my hard drive (.avi's and such, mostly whatever I have show with digital cameras), nor will the usb transfer let me send files over the wire. So what's going on?
I thought it was a format issue, but I've converted several avi's to mp4 and neither clear.fi, nor the usb connection would let me see them / transfer them, respectively.
thanks
oh, and just for clarity sake, i have a 501 and stock rom (for now)
Hi, as I understood using clear.fi or Acer movie you can play only DivX (MP4...) and H264 movies.
For a lot of other format try MX Videoplayer, it'free.
Download from market both the app and the armv7 codec.
thanks for that, but any idea why i can't transfer them via usb?
Sorry but I didn't understood your USB transfer problem...
I use astro to transfer from USB to internal memory with no problem.
i don't have a micro sd card so far, that's why i'm wondering why i can copy certain small size-files via the usb cable between the computer and the tablet, but i can not copy large ones. is there a limit imposed by the FAT/NTFS systems or..?
thanks
Ok, now it is more clear...
I have transferred from pc to tablet movies file bigger than 1gb but less than 2gb; the pc (win7) just warn me that the files could be not reproduced.
I don't know if tablet has limit like Fat32...
it finally worked with copy and paste, drag and drop wouldn't work. Avi and played flawlessly
Me too use copy and paste.
Enjoy your AVI files !
Ciao

Video Player for external drive

I have a bunch of video files loaded on an external drive. Is there a player that will load from the external drive and play the video file? RIght now the only way i figured out how to play them is to load of ES File exporer and browse to the drive. Is there a simpler way where i can open a video manager and the files are right there like in plex?
Kodi

Kodi works. I was doing ES Explorer + MX Player for a while and then I changed to Kodi (using the ARM version, as the x86 one had it's bugs).
Yes Kodi is working fine but you also need root + stickmount ...
If you have a NAS, you can stream content without an issue. You may want to have 802.11ac, though

seconding this. root + stickmount + kodi 14.1 x86 has been my best bet.
a word of warning: stickmount is a bit finicky.
Lots of people are partial to XBMC/Kodi. But I have always been partial to plex. It's just more.... Wife friendly, if you get my drift.
If you don't want to use stickmount/kodi there is always Nexus Media Importer.
I don't have a Nexus Player but the ADT-1 (no forum for us), but I would like to throw in my support for Stickmount + Kodi. Perfect combination.

Retro Gaming on the Nexus Player

Hey all,
I am trying to setup my nexus player to play SNES and N64 games. I looked through this site and did some Google searches but have yet to see a solid walk-through for setting up the player as a retro gaming machine. If there already is a walk-through please redirect me and I apologize ^^. Ok so I believe I already have a firm grasp on side-loading apps using ES File Manager. I also already have some emulators installed on an external HD. My plan is to play using a Logitech gamepad connected with a micro USB to USB OTG adapter (I think this will work). In addition to wondering about the walk-through, do you guys know if it would be possible to load my emulator/ROMs onto Google Drive, then use ES File Manager to simply talk to my drive from the Nexus Player and play emulators that way? I doubt this would work but since it seems like the easiest route thought I would explore this avenue first.
Again not sure if that is the most efficient way to hand things or if people are running emulators directly as an attached storage device through the micro USB port. Thanks for any help you guys can provide I appreciate it.
**UPDATE** I just found out I could install SNES 9x from the Play store direct to the Nexus Player, so that takes care of the emulator issue there I think.
**UPDATE** Using ES file manager and SNES 9x I was able to run roms off my google drive directly to my NP, just need to figure out the controller situation now.
AFAIK, this will be very difficult since there's no way to access external USB storage without root or flashing the new Android M, I haven't done either because of the risk and losing all of my stuff. You might have better luck right now with sharing your roms folder over your network if the emulator(s) supports it.
Not really sure why the NP didn't come with external storage support like we would need. I had maybe 4 games installed from the app store, along with Netflix, SlingTV, Kodi, Live Channels, ES File Explorer, the default NP apps, and ran out of space. So far, it is almost as disappointing to me as the Ouya.

Thanks for the reply. I actually was able to run roms with my NP from my Google Drive using the ES File Manager. However I have not been able to really play them yet since I need a cable to hook a controller into the back of the NP, and that will need a special USB OTG to Micro USB cable. There also appears to be some issues with resolution using SNES9X on my TV (it stretches off the side of the screen) but I think that should be fixable.
Anyway yea, roms off your gdrive to your NP using ES file manager to load your cloud data, it works check it out!
Keep in mind that this way ES will cache the files locally but still download them again for a second launch, this builds up quickly. Those ROMs are small enough to copy to the local drive. For emulators, RetroArch is still a bit tricky to get working at first but has cores for most popular consoles and arcades. C64.emu also works great, and for both you can use Gamesome as a launcher. I suggest you get a cheap otg hub, the one I've got has 3 ports, and reads sd / micro sd and some sony cards too. I play with both an official asus gamepad and a wireless xbox 360 one using the pc usb receiver. I had to root and link a file to get the wireless one properly mapped, a wired one works as soon as you plug it. Haven't tried a DualShock 3 or 4 but afaik wired they work, as most pc usb gamepads.
All of the .emu emulators and snes9x ex+ work great and can be installed right from the play store. Worth the money. They also all have an option to shrink the video to fit to your screen.

Bluray for shield TV

I like the nVidia shield TV.
But now it has happened, my visit had brought a BluRay.
Since asked myself the question whether it is possible to connect a BD drive to the shield TV and play movies?
That would be very awesome, if that were possible. Can you help me there possibly more?
Yes and no. You will probably need to find or write your own drivers, and compile your own software low level, possibly down to kernel depending on what the shield supports. On top of that, it's going to be a dificult process getting it to play once you simply have it mounted. Here is an example of someone getting a TVT drive to work on a transformer, then an update removed this ability even, and that's just a DVD player. (Check the rest of the thread)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29383430&postcount=4
These are streaming devices, and optical media is dying as much as the stores try to tell you it's not. I highly suggest ripping your own media assuming the legality in your country and setting up a media streaming box or use your home PC if it'll handle it. Google, nor other box companies, are likely to try to add support as it's extra bloat to many, and on top of that, many that own movies will buy a digital copy if they want it and can't/won't rip their own media. If you can get a gathering of people who want it, and some good programmers who see a need, you may get support via custom software, but I would'nt hold your breath. If I can answer any more questions, or you would like something more clear, please let me know. Hope you enjoy your shield!
TLDR: Not now, and not likely. Sorry.
I gotta ask, why bother? BR owners generally fall into two categories - people with BR players and the tiny minority like me that rip movies to a server and stream the movies. Which ever method you were using before you got a nSATV will still work now. Most likely that means leaving your BR player (stand alone, PS3, whatever) hooked up to a different HDMI port. Moving forward, I agree with kdb424 - rip your movies and stream them. This could be a full Plex server setup, or something as simple as a network share + Kodi.
I have a hard time saying "just buy all your new movies from a streaming source" because I personally will not do that until Amazon Instant video is officially supported on Android TV, including the nSATV. The reasons are simple, I'm already a Prime member just for the shipping deals so many of the movies I would otherwise possibly buy are free, it's supported by every device I use other than nSATV, and I want all my purchased shows/movies to be from a single source.
I can understand that it really is not worth the effort.
However, with my friends, it is still generally the rule that they have and bring DVDs or Blurays.
You can rent them also for very little money, in video stores.
It would be easy to offer only to have a single device, with which I can play everything.
I have connected to the test a BD drive to the "shield TV" and can choose to be mounted the disc. The drive will be recognized as a memory.
Not more. [emoji4]

So you are saying that you could get it to mount? If so you should be able to play it with Kodi or VLC (I recommend kodi) as it has disk support, but I haven't heard of anyone getting optical mediums of any sort working with android well. Hoping you have solved it.
I can see under Storage in the settings the drive but can not mount.

I think no player can read br format yet. Only licenced ones like power DVD and stuff like that can. You better download a mkv bd rip under 4gb (or rip yourself) and put it on a fat 32 micro sd or USB hdd or thumb drive. Then read it with vlc, kodi or the mkv/mp4 player of your choice.I guess it is the only way.
Or directly download from the shield itself if you can.

No. If i click to mount the "USB Storage", it goes back to the screen before and show that the " USB storage is unmounted and can safely removed"
At kodi i canĀ“t the the storage.
Yes it can be done only by mount the Bluray drive on the network instead of the USB route,
Then use Xbmc search for mounted d drive connect and play away, I use the vidonxbmc version with the beast version loaded onto of vidonxbmc so I can play back Bluray menu support so far it works flawlessly u can mount a bunch of virtual drives if u have ISO as well
This is on my shield TV.

Well yes it works for DVDs and MP4 but blueray codecs are licensed and not supported yet from open source players (vlc,kodi,plex...)
Yes but maybe no.
I know there is an (As seen on TV) Digiland tablet with a built-in DVD player, and there is an app on the tablet which plays the DVDs. So it's differently possible to watch DVD on an android device, and since Android TV is based on Regular Android, so it's possible to use any android app, but I tried searching "digiland dvd app "apk"", it just took me to the apks for FRP Bypass. If you happen to come across an apk, try using an external DVD player, you said Blu-Ray though. I mean, I did not look for a way to get Blu-rays working yet,
but I know that Blu-ray discs come with a DVD version, but 4K UHD Blu-ray discs don't come with DVDs. Yes, I get how nobody likes the 480p DVD video, but I am still searching for something that will work with Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray.
