Europeans with american N4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've bought the Nexus 4 in USA, but i'm Italian. I'm wondering how many europeans bought an USA N4 and what are you planning to do if your phone breaks (since there's no warrantly)

Sell it, then buy one in Italy if you're worried about that. Problem solved

Why not buy a warranty through someone like SquareTrade?

Guess squaretrade is only in USA right? If so it's the same problem

I'm pretty sure warranties on these "world phones" apply to all countries and that you can simply contact your local Google Play store and/or LG for possible repairs. Apple certainly works that way as do other multinationals who recognize the fact that people do move from one country to another on occasion.

LG isn't selling Nexus 4 in Italy right now. But i've contacted LG support and they told me the warrantly is valid only for italian products

Well, that's the risk that early adopters take. If the phone works fine for couple of weeks, generally that would mean no manufacturing defects and eventually nothing down the road. IMO - don't put too much thought into it..

That's not how it works. When the i9250 came out last year it was international only. I bought one in the US from an import store and had no warranty at all through Samsung USA. I had to go through Samsung UK.

The phone is good now, but you'll never know what's gonna happen. Better safe than sorry

Did you buy it through an Italian retailer, or a US one? If you bought it through a US retailer, you should be good. For example, I bought mine through T-Mobile but bring it back overseas. AFAIK, I should still have it under warranty.

^^^^ Agreed. $400 plus shipping is the MOST I would pay for it IF it was in mint condition with not a single scratch on it i.e would pass for new with original box and accessories. Anything more than that would be highway robbery.

Brand New Google Nexus One SIM Unlocked (not tied to any carrier).
Seems obvious, yeah...but you have no idea how many people don't know that they all come this way. People want convenience.
You can even put in the description...
"if you want, I can unlock the bootloader and root the device prior to shipping"
I sold a friend's G1 on ebay "unlocked and rooted" for almost 600 dollars.
That's a good idea. Well it's not like I am trying to scam Google. There are really 4 specks of dust under the screen and I am pretty sure there are more coming. It will just be more convenient if they just send me a replacement with the 850 band. Is there a support number in Canada that I can call? I actually bought the phone in Hong Kong during my visit there in January. I can get HTC ship it to Canada now since it's officially sold in Canada, right?
If anyone is feeling a little desperate, I will buy your T-Mobile version right now for $300 shipped. I know it's low but the upside is that you'll get the money asap and have a AT&T Nexus One in hand by the end of this week if you're quick about it.

Didn't realize you were talking about Amazon UK. Totally different.
In the US, Amazon sells it without a warranty. Of course, there are several places in the US that will include a warranty, but it's usually more expensive.

I'd order it from Expansys-USA. UK inventory is plentiful now so you'll get a UK phone which, unless you intend to mod it heavily, is your best bet for updates. They also ship the phone back to the UK for service for you during the two-year warranty period. If the screen dies on a phone without a warranty the replacement cost is 300 GBP ($477 USD). Something to think about.

I rooted the same day so I'm not too familiar with stock. However, I read WiFi Sharing and the Samsung apps/hubs are battery killers. I'm running Cognition 1.08 with SetCPU and Tasker. I haven't used it too much today, but I'm at 75% after 18 hours.

I just looked at expansys they want to charge me tax on a phone that is being shipped to texas. The price ends up being cheaper if I just order it from the UK again.
I got mine from Amazon (US) and received the UK version of the device. They give you 30 days for a refund and in my experience, most software and hardware issues rear their head within that time frame. Two other friends of mine also ordered from Amazon and received UK version.
Cloves is also another good site to look at. Most people who have ordered from their have been happy.

Fair enough. One thing Amazon told me was because it was fulfilled by, if there was a defect they'd have to give me a refund due to it being another company's stock. If it was Amazon directly then they could replace.

Decision on buying Unlocked or AT&T Brand

If I buy an unlocked version for AT&T where is the best place to buy one? I would want one with a warranty first and foremost. Also, is the home button one that goes out easily? Will the phone run as fast as the one that will come out on AT&T officially? I wouldn't want to spend a ton of money on an unlocked one to find out it's slower than the one that AT&T puts out for hundreds of dollars cheaper.
Next is what about warranty. How safe am I buying unlocked? I have read a lot on this board about yellow stains and stuck pixels. How common are these to get? I don't want to buy a phone that's so much money to be stuck with these problems.
Thanks all
AJ

Expansys-USA provides warranty support for phones they sell meaning they'll ship it back to the UK if it needs service. If you buy it from an authorized dealer in the U.K. it's covered by Samsung's two-year global warranty. Regardless, count on being without your phone for a couple of weeks if it needs repair. If you're looking for the safety and security of a direct replacement overnighted from your carrier and loss/theft coverage importing a phone probably isn't for you.

It seems sturdy and I don't think there were problems with the SGS1 which utilized a home button also.

Unless the AT&T version has an upgraded processor then it wouldn't be any faster. T-Mobile is getting a version with the same Qualcomm chip as the Sensation which hasn't benchmarked well. The leaked pics of Sprint's version appears to be a real SGS2. Nothing specific's been posted about AT&T's version so it could be a 4.3" display with an Exynos chip or a 4.5" display with a Qualcomm chip. They just announced there first LTE phone won't be out until the end of the year and code for AT&T's LTE network was found in one of the latest ROMs. This means their SGS2 might not come out for a while or they'll be releasing it sooner as an HSPA+ phone vs. an LTE phone.

There have been some QC issues with the screen and some variances in color temperature from device to device. If you but if from Expansys exchanging it would be fairly simple. If you buy it in the UK it'll cost you shipping. Stay away from Handtec, they were hassling people on display related exchanges.

Also, is HSPA+ phone as fast as the LTE phone? Will I even notice that big of a difference?

LTE only matters if you plan on keeping the phone for a long time. AT&T's only going to have 15 markets up this year. If you get an international phone you can get fake-4G for $10 a month. LTE, while faster, is $30 for 2GB of data and $10 per GB beyond that. And you can't tether at that price. I stream video and tether a tablet and have had no speed issues and I'm in a 3G market.
You sound really paranoid about getting an international phone. You need to think hard about the downside.
- Warranty work will easily take weeks.
- You can buy accident insurance from SquareTrade for $94 for two years but you can't get theft/loss protection.
- If there are QC defects out of the box it'll be a pain to exchange the phone.
The upside is you can get cheap unlimited data (via AT&T), upgrades directly from Samsung, and there's no carrier molestation with crap added or functions stripped out.
Personally, if AT&T gets the same phone T-Mobile is (4.5" display/Qualcomm chip), I'd skip it. Without the Exynos chip the 4.5" phone is an SGS2 for marketing purposes only.
Not paranoid just getting all of the facts. Is the att version going to be 4.5?

So do any models actually have a real US warranty? (I.e. Not the Expansys deal).
I didn't think Samsung offers any US warranty coverage since the GSII hasn't been produced for the US.
I saw the "International Warranty" model on Amazon but no one can prove it's actually warranted...they just assume it's covered in the US.

If you send a phone to Samsung for repair they'll ask for a copy of the invoice and possibly a credit card statement if they're suspicious about the authenticity of the invoice. Any phone purchased outside it's intended market of sale is considered grey market and therefore has no warranty. Same thing for purchasing it from a retailer not authorized by Samsung. Since no model of the SGS2 is intended for sale in the U.S. buying it from anyone in the U.S. means it has no warranty - no matter what the seller might tell you. Supposedly, because the warranty is considered global, a properly purchased UK phone should be repaired by Samsung in the U.S. No one's tested that though. Expansys, because they have offices in the UK, ships the phone back through their UK office for warranty repairs.
If I were to buy Expansys-US would be the place because they do cover it. Now only problem is what if I buy it and AT&T come out with theirs in two weeks LOL! Also, what's the fail rate on the screens, etc?

AT&T WILL probably have the Galaxy S II in a few weeks... if you can you are probably better off waiting to see which model you prefer. I heard US varients of the GS II were getting Tegra processors and of course AT&T will cripple the phone with bloatware and slow updates.. so I went ahead and got an unlocked one from Amazon that DOES have a warrenty. Who knows, maybe AT&T will surprise everyone and keep the Galaxy S II the way it should be.

Buy an OPO Oneplus One without invite?

Hi.
I´m new at this forum. I have been reading it for years, but now I have decided to sign in. I would like to ask you about the OPO. I have been waiting for an invite several weeks in diferent webs, but without prize, so I have been searching for a good supplier. You would buy an OPO without invite? I want this phone and as I have been waiting for more than 8 weeks I want to buy it now. I have found a supplier that looks good, and with a very good price, may I post the link here to get checked by you? I have been talking with him and he can set an special price for the forum if there is people interested in it. Waiting for your reply. Have a nice day:good:
Please note that I´m not trying to do spam, I have no posted the link yet because I don´t want problems. If you want the link posted I´ll post it here.

Additionally I would ask whether or not his version comes with ColorOS or CM otherwise you may have to flash CM over it. Sorry I don't know the bands for Europe, I couldn't tell you.
Given OPO can't seem to make enough international versions and so ship straight from the factory to consumers, I'd agree these are likely to be the Chinese edition which anyone can get relatively easily. There's LTE unknowns as well as warranty concerns.
Plus, the term 'special price' almost always means a tidy profit for those involved except the buyer. Not something I'd get involved with given the risks and unknowns.
I would guard against linking anything as, despite claims to the contrary, the OP has more than a whiff of a sales pitch about it that aims to attract PMs.

Do your research and you will be fine, importing is the way to go. I've had the phone for over 2 months now and am loving it. :good:
I bought mines from swappa. International version 64gb Sandstone
I just bought the 64GB Chinese model from Hong Kong Goldway on Aliexpress yesterday. Waiting for it to ship and should have it next week hopefully. The bands work fine here so no dramas. AU$500 total which included 3 day DHL shipping. I'm from the UK so getting a flagship phone like this for 280 GBP is amazing.
Bought the 16gb version from to2c.com
Could choose between color os and multilanguage version. Chose for the second one and had it in two weeks (to the netherlands). Everything works fine. Connectivity is good. Only 4g is very limited
Sent from my A0001 using XDA Free mobile app
I'm supposed to buy one today. The package is sealed, but I'm concerned about service and warranty for the phone since I didn't purchase it under the invite system. Should I buy it? I heard some yellow screen, touch screen, sound issues, etc.

If you're outside of China you're likely going to have support and service issues should you need it, regardless of where you bought the phone.
From my OPO

Would you say the phone is worth those service support issues because I travel a lot?

Will it be your daily driver? If so, I'd look at something that I could get repaired easily and quickly in places I traveled to. Preferably something with a lot of worldwide service centers. Or have two phones (not necessarily two of the same) in case one needed to be repaired for a certain period of time.
If you read the various OPO boards, you'll know just getting a support ticket acknowledged can take time. Additionally, if you travel frequently, you might not be in one place long enough to hang around for a replacement to be sent to your location. A walk-in, no fuss model like Apple does with it's stores is a good 'safety net'. But it costs.
I run two phones. Either my 5s or M7 as primary with OPO as my backup since I'm mostly ROM testing at the moment. Wouldn't have a problem with the OPO as primary but I'd not take it as my only phone. And no way would I use just an OPO if traveling or on business for the reasons above.

Yes. Tweakers sucks with their overbearing mods. It's so oddly formal and stodgy over there. Let's keep each other abreast of the latest!
What's wrong with Tweakers?
I don't visit their often, because I don't speak Dutch that well.
Anyway, from what I read, the pre-order won't start before November 18, 2014. I don't know if that's true.

And it would be sucks if the store only have 32GB version.

I wouldn't mind the 32gb version, owned a 64 gb htc and I never really used the extra space, don't really store a lot of pictures/music on my phone...
but my LG G3 screen just broke and it hurts to wait that long... if that's just the pre order then shipping will be at least a week later
I just hope it get released (in NLD) through Google Play, but the feeling I got after the way US got treated on the pre-orders we're pretty much screwed. Seems that on previous devices the Play Store price was (slightly) lower than with 3rd party retailers.
All I need is a confirmed date and price, so I can decide to wait for it or move on. My S3 is slowly losing it so I want to replace it in the next 2-3 months.
If it gets a release / pre-order for €565 for 32GB, then I'm buying. Midnight Blue!
32GB will be enough for me, I got the same amount on my S3 at the moment. If I need more storage, there's Drive, Dropbox, etc.
And yes, Tweakers can get a bit "formal" at times
The Nexus 9 is now available for pre-order in the NL store. I don't think I've seen a Nexus device of any sort so soon appear. Gives me a slight bit of hope at least for the appearance of the Nexus 6.

Interesting story there. Here, the stores always refer to the manufacture's warranty and leave it up to the brand to fix or replace it. That's pretty good customer service, for Europe at least.
Retailers are obligated to handle warranty issues in the Netherlands, not the manufacturer.
Also a 2-year warranty period is issued to consumer electronics.
Based on the last few years, I think the retailers here are always late, compare to UK or Germany. But, probably that's how it works on this kind of industry, I don't know why. I bet the retailer in Germany would get it sooner.
But, checking the Nexus 9 on the Play Store The Netherlands, it is THERE available, leaving warehouse in just 1 - 2 days. And the Nexus 9 is officially on sale starting today. Thus, Play Store is not late!
I hope, this would be the same with Nexus 6. If any indication, it could be November 12, as said by T-Mobile U.S. And heard the "full review embargo" would be lifted that day as well.
We can only hope, can't we?

yes we kunnen sure hopen!
And if we do get forgotten on the N6...
This Moto might be released here:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/...-variant-for-non-us-markets-spotted-on-google
But I counting on the N6 being released here. Coolblue also has the N6 set for pre-orders starting from 18-10.
They provide the option of email notification when it can be ordered.
If we could only get conformation of the price tag...

Wait, if something goes wrong with a device and it needs to be serviced or possibly replaced, what does the retailer have to do with it beyond the return date? Or, can you really bring the device in to the retailer and have them arrange service?

Yes.
According to Dutch consumer laws the retailer is obliged to extend warranty services during two years.
Either they get it fixed or replaced, that is up to retailer.
Of course, if the defect isn't covered by warranty costs may apply.
