Note 1 vs Nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone think I should sell my Note 1 for the new Nexus? I love the power of it but I am worried about going to a smaller screen. Storage isnt a big deal to me. Anyone made the switch and are happy with it? I love pure google, quad core, and 2gb ram with the low price.

Power of note 1? The note 2 doesn't even stack up to nexus 4. The screen is so much better imo.. The note has big icons that make the phone sorta look like a toy. The screen on this phone is amazing and the size is perfect.

I was referring to the Nexus 4. I don't plan to keep it stock so my Note 1 doesn't have big icons. How does the camera stack up to the note 1's camera? Nexus 4 has a higher pixel density but is the display actually better? And I thought the Adreno 320 was faster than the Mali 400

Im having the same debate. Here are my thoughts:
Im pretty happy with my note. However, for the following reasons, I am strongly considering a nexus 4, and infact have one preordered and scheduled to arrive in a week or two:
1. Most importantly: SLOW TO GET UPDATES, thanks to samsung and AT&T. I understand this is the process, and I expected it upfront, but it is irksome, none the less.
2. While I love the larger screen, I do find myself thinking quite often, damn i wish i had a phone i could use easily with one hand
3. Its pretty slow at times, which is a common complaint, and locks up here and there.
But my concerns with the nexus are the obvious ones:
1. No LTE - Yes, my note is fast, but I don't often stream things like Netflix, etc, so would I really care all that much? Plus, As I have come to understand, you can get it to support LTE...maybe. (keep i nmind I have AT&T which is one of the 'supported' bands...)
2. No removable battery - I dont really care about getting a larger battery though, but my concern is what happens when the battery starts to give out?
3. No external storage- I don't really use my SD card now, and 16 is more than enough, considering most of my data is on the cloud already. If i were a heavier user of 3rd party Mods / roms, and rooting features, I am sure this would be a deal breaker. Fortunately, I am not. For the record though, I am rooted
4. Made by LG:
I've heard the refresh rate is not great on the screen, and with jelly-beans purported "liquid butter" experience, it is fairly noticeable
I've heard about the issues with the shielding on the earpiece components.
SO my question is - what do fellow owners, or even other phablet owners think? Will i miss the larger screen for web browsing? The LTE? or will i be happier witha a more portable phone, that has all the latest android goodies? Opinions? thoughts?

The current widespread LTE band that AT&T uses is NOT the one in the Nexus 4.
If the battery starts to give out, buy a new battery and replace it. The back comes off easily with some time and a small screwdriver.

Note or Galaxy Nexus?

Coming from N1, I really appreciate the abundance of ROMs and no crap stock software. No TouchWiz to add a layer of bugs seems right. Also, there's an uncertainty about ICS situation on Note. Other than that, its all in favor of the Note. What do you guys think?
For me the reason to opt for Note is the 5.3in screen and S pen.. if u dont mind this two then u shd be good for Nexus..
Agree with razorpixel. As for touchwiz and the software that is coming with the Note, I think that Samsung did a great job. The email app with its previews and split pane layout in landscape is very user friendly. The planner on it is very nice (bit limited though) and touchwiz is working great on this device. I particularly like the way you can add notes to the home screen and resize them to almost any size you want.
My overall impression of the apps on the note: very professional. Certainly not bloatware.
I was facing exactly the same dilemma. For me galaxy nexus is a big disappointment hardware-wise. CPU is barely OK, GPU sucks - may not be futureproof, looks cheap, no gorilla glass, I don't like software buttons and I'm afraid that it may be the only phone with this funny resolution (1280x720 minus the space for software buttons) which may lead to problems with apps scaling badly, wallpapers etc. I would rather choose Galaxy S2 LTE HD in place of nexus, but lord only knows when they launch it in europe. Note it is then.
As to ICS: even if it takes samsung forever to launch an official update, I bet there will be plenty of unofficial XDA roms before that and knowing myself I would end up with some custom one anyway.
I was thinking also about Nexus but since 99% of users/owners here are more than amazed with the phone, it became a clear choice for me.
Plus at this point, Nexus is only guaranteed for Verizon, no date yet on when/if it will come to AT&T.
the galaxy nexus CPU is more than "barely ok". . . .the OMAP4460 is a 1.5 GHZ cpu that is so good, they they can clock it down to 1.2GHZ (where its at) and get the same performance on the phone. the GPU, stock, runs at 200 MHZ. the version in the galaxy nexus is over clocked to 384MHZ. thats almost twice as fast. plus, it has a dual channel memory, which i think other phones dont have. it allows fro better multi tasking so it can get data in and out quickly and simultaneously. also, it has an IVA 3 hardware accelerator that decodes HD video much quicker at much less power. another top new android phone, the RAZR, has an OMAP 4430, at 1.2 GHZ and the same GPU at 304 MHZ. i think its difficut to say this phone is a "let down"
sidenote: the nexus line isnt about bleeding edge hardware, its about bleeding edge software.
Biggest let-down with the Nexus for me was the lack of sdcard along with just 16 gig of storage. Being on a capped data plan, the cloud isn't a great option for me. Lack of gorilla glass and an inferior SOC to my GSII were just the final nails in the coffin.

Your reasoning is valid. But from logical point of view, if you were liking Nexus but not happy with its spec, you should get something better of similar size factor. Note on the other hand is a different league device. Don't confuse like - I wanted to buy helicpoter but since I did not like the speed, I am getting Boeing 777.
Hardware is pretty hard to change. Software however. . . Wait a minute, this is a developer forum . . .

But i want a device better than my current one(SGSII). And there really isn't anything else on the market right now. And i made a mockup of the phone...so size doesn't seem to be an issue...

I agree that the vast majority of people here, both owners and those who have objectively read several reviews such as the one from 3G, are impressed with the Note. So it is a pity to sometimes see a disproportionate amount of gripes threads here for they damage the reputation of the Note which may finally result in it's failure because people are persuaded not to buy.

I agree. But then again. This phone is not for everyone and I believe most of us agree on this.
Yes, it indeed is too big for a phone, but not that big. Yamaha codec? Yes, could be better. S-Pen? I wish it wasn't there. But to be honest, I had caught my self using my HTC Touch HD stylus sometimes.
Conclusion: Yes, it has it's flaws like many other devices. But are they a deal breaker? Personally: NOT even close..
When it arrives I will use it at it's full glory. Why? Because this is the phone I wanted. Maximum portability(debatable for some) vs maximum performance/screen size. It's a winner in my book. I skipped the SGS2 for this for a reason.

I'm happy that people are talking openly about their gripes. Everywhere else, it's either apple fanboys trying to shout down the device or android fanboys shutting down negative conversations.
The reason I signed up on this forum and I'm following the discussion here more closely is that that people openly discuss the problems they're facing. As a first time will-be android buyer, it's important to me to know everything I'm getting into. And personally, I'm thrilled that the only problems people have with the Note (other than a few HW problems) are things that are unimportant to me personally, while at the same time, it seems like everything I've ever wanted in a smartphone...
I have already reserved at our local Samsung store here in Singapore. It comes two weeks from the now (that's what they keep telling customers). The main reason I'm getting the Note is because of the 1280x800 res on a 5.3" SAmolled display. The pen features are just the cherry top for me.

What you{& others} fail to understand is what's the purpose of Google Nexus Series.
Google never ever launched these phones to compete with any other smartphones{hell N1 never came out of it's native region},Nexus S was launched in limited countries only.
But these smartphones offers you unskinned, pure, greatest & fastest updates. They compete with each other{consider them as Apple iphone}.
Nexus S was a definite improvement over N1{better camera, hardware, screen,NFC},,similarly Galaxy Nexus is a giant leap forward compare to N1 & Nexus S.
Galaxy Nexus is not launched with the intention to compete with S2/Note/Sensation series.....if you want unskinned version,you want stock you go for it.It's here to launch with ICS, introduce it,bring on HD resolution{it will be a norm from now on for high end droids}
If you are looking for best hardware on the market{although ICS with hardware acceleration will run like super smooth on Nexus}...wait for some time,,you can almost bet Samsung Galaxy 3 or HTC next supersmartphones will have better screen/processors/camera than it.
So this comparison is not worth.

It is hard to take your posts objectively when I see your signature.
Also, I was going to get the Nexus exactly for the reason that it was going to be the bleeding edge, and it just about was. It is a fair comparison.
I've been umming and arring about a Galaxy Nexus or a Galaxy Note. In the end I plumped for the Note. I currently have a Nexus One, a Galaxy Tab (original 7 inch) and a Galaxy Tab 10.1. I like them all for different reasons, but do find that sometimes I'm using the N1 when I wished it was the Tab 7 inch, and sometimes using the 7 inch when I wished I had the 10.1 close by.
The Note I think will nicely replace the N1 and the Tab 7 in those circumstances. Also the fact that I can sell those two on (with accessories) and pretty much make up the cost of the Note also helped. I'm also lucky in that my company pays for my phone data, so I'm not interested in plans or suchlike.
It'll be sad to part with the Nexus One - the best smartphone I've owned. I love the huge community behind it. I was all set for the Galaxy Nexus, but for me I feel it's a bit limiting. 16GB-only for the UK it seems. No SD slot. The biggest selling point is that it'll be ICS out of the box, but software comes to all who wait...
As for my 7" Tab, recently I've reverted that to Froyo as it's actually better performing than Gingerbread in certain areas - BBC iplayer being the most significant improvement for me. I originally used it as a phone as well, but it was just too big to use natively, and a pain to always have a bluetooth device for hands-free calling.
ICS will get to all current devices very soon, but I'm confident that the Note runs Gingerbread very well from all the reviews I've seen. It seems like the perfect compromise (all devices are compromises) for heavy phone use and casual tablet use.

[Q] Anyone debating the switch from Nexus 4 to SGS3?

There have been many threads regarding the switch from the Samsung Galaxy S3 to Nexus 4, but are any of you considering the switch from the N4 to SGS3 (or back to SGS3) after using the N4?
I recently upgraded from a SGS2 Skyrocket so the N4 is much faster than what I’m used to. However, I have several friends who have the AT&T variant (i747) with dual core as opposed to quad core with similar “snappyness” in running daily tasks – does quad core really make all that much difference?
Some other gripes I have are:
- Lack of LTE (this was known but I didn’t realize it would be that big of an issue until I actually made the switch.. now I miss LTE),
- Camera is EXTREMELY grainy compared to that of the SGS3,
- Lack of storage space (I purposely ordered the 16gb and have yet to transfer any songs/videos from my old SD card to my N4 yet I already only have 9gb free),
- Although the resolution is definitely more crisp than the SGS3, the colors do seem a bit washed out when compared to AMOLED - AMOLED eyes?,
- My N4 gets noticeably warm after regular use.. far warmer than my Skyrocket got
So that’s about the end of my rant. Do any of you share the same views?
Quad Core vs Dual Core. Quad is obviously better in the long run especially when Android 5.0 (Key Lime Pie) is out. Not to mention, Galaxy S3 won't have 5.0 right away. Developer support for Nexus devices is a ++++++
LTE: Use the LTE hack. Use search, people have used LTE on their N4 on AT&T.
Camera: use the camera hack in development
Storage space: wont go there.
Resolution: Uh... no? IPS > AMOLED when it comes to reproducing colors. On AMOLED, blacks are better
If you're having buyer's remorse then something must be wrong with you thinking about going to a Galaxy S3. N4 is far more superior in specs especially when it comes to development in ROMs and Kernels. GS3 is outdated as GS4 is right around the corner, Summer time '13 probably.

The people using LTE on AT&T are few and far between. AT&T has such limited band 4 LTE deployment. As far as I know it only exists in Oklahoma and a few other test areas.

Yes, in the long run when apps become more demanding a quad core phone today is like future-proofing.. however, I don't normally keep phones for longer than 6 months anyway (family plan upgrades conveniently spaced out lol). So I'll likely be getting an SGS4 or whatever anyway. But for now, is quad core not overkill?
LTE only works with AT&T in limited markets.
Which camera hack are you referring to? The only one I know of is the frame rate mod for videos.. a link would be much appreciated
Yeah, storage isn't much of a deal anyway.
IPS > AMOLED when it comes to producing more natural colors.. doesn't mean vivid/saturated colors on the AMOLED aren't visually appealing -- it's not just blacks, any color seems to "pop" more. I realize there's a color mod out there as well for the N4 which can adjust gamma to make it more AMOLED-like but that would involve me rooting the Nexus which I feel I shouldn't have to do. SGS3 gives you the option to select "normal" or "natural".
CPU/GPU are definitely much better than the SGS3 but only really needed for intense gaming. It's at the opportunity cost of a better camera, LTE, sd card, etc. Is it still worth it to keep the N4 if you're a dev or are not into modding?

To answer your questions, I have to say first that it depends of the individual use.
I don't have LTE in my country so this isn't a issue to me.
Camera is awesome for my use, don't have to complain about it. Sure it can be better but I don't shoot with my phone, I do it with my DSLR.
Free space to me is enough, I have like 130 apps installed and still have two gigs free space.
The resolution is definitely awesome.
I agree with you that it gets really warm. But with UV that's actually fixed.
Another awful thing is the rattling and the current noise sound coming from the earpiece.
In my case, it isn't really noticeable, that's why I'm keeping it. However a friend of mine didn't have that much luck, he had to RMA his phone.
Last thing, I think that you don't buy a Nexus to keep it stock. They are the most hackable phones on the market, so why?

I don't really see the need to root this device as I would normally do on an Android since it's already so fast and smooth -- I could care less about changing colors of the clock or w/e others use root for. To have to root your device to fix camera or color seems odd. I don't normally take pictures, but when I do; I'd like for them to be nice and not grainy like the ones from my Nexus. Also, I'm in Houston, TX where we have a decent LTE coverage and it just seems like I'm missing out.
What is "UV".. are you referring to under-volting?
I luckily don't have this rattling problem nor do I have any abnormal sounds coming from the earpiece.. I do however have 2 tiny dead pixels which are not that big of a deal but still irritating.
I originally jumped on the Nexus 4 since it was at a great value.. but since I can swap it out for a SGS3 at break even; I don't know if I should keep it
My wife has international SGS3 i-9300. It is much better phone than Nexus 4. in every aspect. I regret buying Nexus 4, should of pay $100 more and get SGS3.
I've compared the S3 and the N4 side by side many times, and honestly I'm not sure who in their right mind would go over to an S3. The N4 is quick and snappy and the way the glass curves slightly at the edges looks so good while the overly beveled/rounded corners of the S3 makes it look like a fisher price toy.
I'm in an LTE area and have experienced LTE speeds both on an S3 and an iPhone 5, yes it is blazing fast and yes it's awesome... but man why am I still on N4.. oh yeah because it's just that good.
Neverrrrrrr. N4 all the way. T-Mobile LTE, I can wait for it!
SGS3= Blah!

LTE doesn't even matter. Especially when you're on verizon it just drains your battery. HSPA+ for me is more than sufficient. I get speed tests of 12 Mb/s I don't get why people make a big deal of LTE. It's not like you're going to download a Linux distro on your phone. Plus, data caps and LTE? No thanks. I'll stick with my HSPA and T Mobile.

I came over from a T999 and haven't regretted it since. Even though I only have 8gb of storage, it's enough for me as my 7gb music collection is on the cloud, saving me enough space for 1-2 720p blu ray rips. The $30 T-Mobile Monthly plan is perfect, I kind of streamed too many episodes of Netflix at one point but I'm still at 3.7/5gb. The storage was't a big of an issue as I thought it would be since I can just work around it.
The S3 was already pretty fast but the N4 is even faster, the bigger apps open faster, and the new Adreno 320 should be pretty good.
Although I'm not a big fan of both phone's design, the N4 looks better and feels much nicer to me, however they both come up short in the design and quality department, but I was spoiled by Nokia's N9.
S3 battery seems way better than nexus 4 when watching Netflix over mobile data. I can watch one episode of TV show, with the same amount of battery i could watch probably 2-3 episodes.

Like any new phones, there will be flaws to fix. Battery for sure along with this data fluctuation. I see it in a area full blast on HSPA.. It fluctuates from zero to 4 bars every so often..

For $299-$349 off contract!
Ultimately, it's your phone. Do what you want with it. To be harsh about it, I don't think anyone here is willing to beg for you to continue using the N4 if you don't like it. Who are you for us to beg to stay? Like really.
If you were morfic or some kernel developer, I might beg you but they wouldn't ask for attention like that.
I started with the International Galaxy SIII (I9300) and the Nexus 4 is better for my needs.
**** Touchwiz. It sucks balls compared to the pure Google experience. Even just the Keyboard works so much better on GN than SIII.
Also, if you're not running Franco Kernel and the EIZO sound mod, you are missing out...

Well said my friend:highfive:
I'm coming from a galaxy s1 and I had a way better battery life!
I get 20% loss in battery life when reading emails and browsing the Internet for like 30mn, this is just ridiculous . It just feel so wrong... Reminds me of my old htc desire!
Do you think battery life will get improved over time? Or should I just trade my phone for a s3 (I always use aosp rooms anyway)

[Q] Considering a Nexus 4, a few questions for long time N4 owners

Considering picking up a Nexus 4 and would love to hear some pros and cons from long time users of the N4 on XDA that have had the phone for months now, and their real-world usage and opinion (like how the performance/battery holds up after x months of use). I also wouldn't mind hearing about comparisons to other phones with regards to performance if other N4 owner have/use other phones, older or new.
Some background info:
I'm coming from a 2010 HTC Windows Phone, so I'll probably be blown away by what a 2012/2013ish phone hardware is like. WP7 on my HTC HD7 still runs very fast/smoothly in the core OS experience, but once you get to 3rd party app load times on startup, it becomes painful. On top of that MS has all but abandoned WP7, and features-wise, its seriously dated and missing key basic but essential features of smartphone OS's, like ahem orientation lock and a more modern mobile web browser, not even 3rd party apps can help there.
Like you said any 2012/13 phone will amaze you from the phone you have now. You might not even notice the differences between all these new phones.
The closest comparison to this phone would be the s3.
nexus 4 slightly outperforms the s3, you would most notice the smoothness between the two. Battery life, they're roughly the same, except if you use your phone a lot... like extensively than the better choice is the s3. Camera is also better on the s3. Storage goes to s3. But I feel the nexus is the more complete phone... I guess you can say less hiccups.
I would probably choose s4 and htc one over nexus though. Haven't played with them yet, but simply because they're newer lol

I love my n4. I'm not a "long time" owner being 2 weeks of owning it, but I'll tell you I love it. I came from a One X running a custom rom and it didn't compare to the speed of the stock n4. It may be a dual core vs quad but still, aosp is just fantastic. Battery is pretty good I'd say. It gets through the day, I'll show some pictures. The lack of LTE and storage isn't a big deal to me because all my music is coming from the cloud and HSPA is fast enough. I haven't even switched to the HSPA+ plan yet because lazy. However, it doesn't play music near as loud as my One X through headphones, but they have a mod for that.
Oh and it charges pretty fast.

Nexus all the way. It's been a little less than a month of owning it, and it's great. Everything works like it's supposed to work, custom ROMs are easy to install, and I unlocked the bootloader/rooted it in a little less than an hour.
I got mine since december of the past year, and I love it more than ever, looks amazing, runs smooth, can run any game without lag, it fit my needs.
I must warn you to be careful don't drop it
My sister have an galaxy s3 and honestly the Nexus 4 is at higher level
I have the S3 and Nexus 4 and Whereas I love my S3, the N4 is the better phone all around. The S3 has it's better things like storage, LTE, S Calendar, OMLEAD (sp.) Screen (where black background takes no power but on N4 it does) and the camera. The camera is by far the best. Beats the heck out of N4 so if you take alot of pics, you'll want the S3. The N4 does okay on its camera but is no where near S3. BUT...performance wise, the N4 wins, hands down. ASOP is better in my opinion as some of these custome UI's really take a lot of power, etc. Plus, for $350, you get a highend phone for a midrange price. It's a no brainer in my opinion.
I'm happy with my N4. If you need an unlocked phone, for the price you seriously can't beat it. If price is no issue, I agree with Teo032 and I'd go with S4 or HTC One based on hardware.
The one thing about the N4 I'm still getting used to is the lack of storage size. I STRONGLY suggest getting the 16 GB. I got the 8 and I would totally pay $50 for another 8 gigs. I think it currently comes with a free bumper, if not, get one, they're actually pretty cool and my N4 kept slidding off crap because the screen is so smooth.
Good luck!
Nearing two months here. Upgraded from the LG Optimus 2X, the world's first dual core Android.
I absolutely love my N4. For the price it's a steal. The performance just blows me away (I am running CyanogenMod, not overclocked) compared to my old phone which had s**tty drivers and often had lag spikes even with overclocking.
If you compare the N4 to a stock unrooted Galaxy S4 or HTC One (the two powerhouses of 2013), you will actually find that when exiting apps and going around the home screens, the N4 is faster than either phone, because those two powerhouses have to deal with the overhead of rendering an ugly custom skin that adds no value Of course when actually inside an app those two phones will be the performance kings, but the N4 is no slouch either - it nails pretty much every game I throw at it.
These are the only real reasons to forgo the N4 in favour of something else:
1. You have the $$$ and want better build quality
2. You can't live with only 16 GB of internal storage, non-expandable
3. You like having a removable battery (or at least a removable cover to make accessing the SIM easier)
4. You want officially supported LTE that isn't 1700 Mhz
5. You think 4.7" is too big (a fair reason) and want something more compact.
If none of those points apply to you, then by all means, GET THE NEXUS 4!!! Also as a bonus you can load on a Metro UI skin if you miss WP
It's been like ~2 months now, and as most lads above I can sincerely say that it was the best choice possible at the moment (still is imo). Seeing that I simply agree with most of whats above this post, peformance wise n stuff, ill poke it from another point of view. Being an iphone4 user (jailbroken of course), the very first time I had the chance to fiddle with the nexus4 - it stole my heart completely. Versatility is just beyond any limits and if youre looking for a smart purchase, good performance/price ratio AND quality product - N4 is the best choice possible right now. The reason ive been using an iphone for quite a bit was actually lack of android based quality products (well, apart from a couple of htc's maybe ). It is crucial for me since I hate using a phone that reminds me of a plastic toy. N4 is the perfect solution in this case - official android based product combined with decent materials. You have to keep in mind though - it is a fragile piece of equipment and if you have like slippery hands (lol) or simply drop the phone pretty (too ) often - you must get yourself a case/bumper (i would recommend a piece of screen/back protector as well) cuz it might hurt if it bangs the floor
The Best...just saying
I have it for a long time and i must say its a nice phone.
You must be aware tho that there are random wifi issues on this phone that will probably be corrected with a system update.
The stock rom is ok and the stock google kernel uses the perf. branch so do not expect great battery life on stock even when the phone's idle.
A protective case is required or you will screw the back glass easily.
Photosphere is a nice feature included on the phone.
Phone overheats easily
You see the digitizer on screen
But its a great phone and im happy with it. Nothing would beat the galaxy s2 i had lol

Ordered mine on day one and received it the following week. I came from an iPhone.
I have had no issues other than Android itself. Some of it is half baked, and fixes can be non-existent. Battery life is OK if you come to the conclusion that some apps are the main cause of poor battery life on Android... it is a bit of a free for all here. I have seen significant improvement since installing Qualcomm's Battery Guru. I have seen 13.5 hours on battery with 2hr 46min screen time and 50% battery left. While it ain't quite an iPhone, it is more than sufficient.
The phone is very poorly documented and much of how it works is a "discovery by braille" experience. The stock mail client is unusable for business... thankfully I found a better one (AquaMail). The little speaker on the back is useless. I mean USELESS.
If I had it to do over again I don't think I'd do anything differently. The only other phone I would consider at this point is the HTC One (almost twice the price). At $350 I am very comfortable using my phone and not worrying about damaging/losing it. If I toast it it is not that big a deal to replace it (unlike the $600-$800 for some competing phones). It does almost everything well, and the little rough spots are minor. I do miss the accessory/software ecosystem that is iOS, but at this point I think I would miss widgets and the open file system even more.
As far as aging goes, I've had mine for a while and it's stood the test of time. My battery life has only gotten better and better, but that's mostly due to constantly improving custom kernels (I use Faux123's). It plays all the games out there. The only drawback is storage.
Sent from an N4 blessed with AOKP and sanctified by Faux123!

Considering Note 3 for upgrade

I am coming from a Samsung Galaxy S3. I am due for an AT&T upgrade early July. I was really leaning towards the new Galaxy S5 but then I saw that I could get a Note 3 for the same price. I am really torn. The advantages I see with the Note 3 are:
---32 GB hard drive space vs 16 GB in S5
---3 GB ram vs the 2 GB that the S5 has
---larger screen
---bottom speaker (which I personally prefer to rear speakers)
The advantages I see for the Galaxy S5 are:
---a better camera (though I would love to hear just how much better)
---easier to handle with one hand
---water resistance
---apparently a screen that is brighter and slightly more accurate
I would like to hear from those who have had both and would like to elaborate or mention more advantages with either device. Thanks!
First it's about size difference. If you dislike a big phone you better don't buy a note. Everything else is a lot better on the note!!! For the same price and if the size is ok for u I would even prefer the note over the s5.
I went to an AT&T store yesterday and messed with a Note 3 for a while. The screen is humongous but the Galaxy S5 isn't too far from the same size with a much smaller screen.
I've liked everything about my Galaxy S3 except battery life (I now have a 3500 mah battery) and heating issues when doing gaming with, for example, Minecraft, even at its lowest graphical setting. I just can't game for more than 15-20 minutes on this phone without it getting extremely hot. Screen temperatures easily reach 100 within that time span.
Yesterday, I played Dead Trigger on the Note 3 for about 15 minutes. The phone did get quite warm on the screen side opposite the camera. It wasn't as bad as my S3 but it was a tad disappointing. Unfortunately the S5 next to it didn't have Dead Trigger on it and so I couldn't do a "heat" comparison.
BTW, hearing a lot about GPS issues and some suggesting not to upgrade to KitKat. Has the GPS issue been fixed without me having to run a custom ROM?
Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

I haven't had any GPS issues on the Note 3, but I wouldn't base your decision on the GPS anyway since it's a problem which can be fixed. Like I said before it's about your preference. Try to focus on the things you really need/want to see on your device and look also for different Android phones. There are so many good devices on the market and if you can wait there will be some more beasts coming in the next couple of months!!! Me personally god used to the size and smaller devices feel like toys when I use them.
From what I heard you need a better battery life and good gaming and over all performance. Something else?(music, camera)
Thanks for the reply. Battery life, no exaggerated heat when gaming, camera, very good speakers, and removable battery are the most important things to me. I absolutely love the HTC M8 but the camera and non-removable battery kill it for me. I would really love to have front speakers, but the other candidate, Sony Z2, has bezels too big for my taste.
I am waiting on more information on the LG G3 and this Galaxy Prime that I keep on hearing about. As mentioned earlier, I am due for an upgrade in early July and so I have time to really think about things but I like doing my research months in advance instead of last second.
I mentioned to my brother that I was considering the Note 3 and he said that is has reception issues---dropped calls, weak signal, etc. I googled it and there were some threads on the subject. Any comments on this potential issue?
Weak signals and dropped calls would be a network issue not really a handset issue
I came from a s3 to a note 3 and I'll never look back anything smaller feels miniscule now initially took time to adjust to the size of the screen but now I can't see me ever using a smaller device
Battery has served me well get a full day out of it no problem
You won't find a phone that won't heat up while gaming it's impossible to cool a device operating at full power without some sort of cooling mechanics other than heatsinks
Phone will take anything you throw at it and then some

I own both. (I'm using my S5 as a glorified mp3 player these days, as the screen is too small for me.) Much prefer the Note 3.
The camera on the S5 is in no significant way better than that on the Note 3. I'm an actual photographer so I haven't used any of the filters, and I set everything manually, but in term of picture quality, both are rubbish in low light. In bright light they're near equal.
In terms of screen the S5 is smaller with a higher pixel density. You can only see it when you're about 2cm away from your screen. The colours are slightly more saturated on the S5. (That's a matter of preference, I prefer somewhat more normal colours. Mainly because I can't stand the ghastly Touchwiz colours on the S5.)
Each phone heats up whilst gaming. That's what happens when the plastic case serves as the heatsink without any other fan or coolant. Particularly if you're holding it. The more powerful the device, the more it heats up.
I have no issues with GPS on KitKat. It locks quickly, is stable and has no satelite loss. Call reception is also fine, any drops in signal is entirely due to the sometimes hilariously bad coverage of my provider. (I've nagged them about that. Repeatedly. In person, at their HQ, to the network manager. No luck.)
The S5 is a bit better at handling drops and bumps. The Note 3 is a bit more fragile, so if you lead an active lifestyle or you're clumsy, consider a case.
If you have the time, I would indeed suggest waiting for the S5 Prime before making your choice. http://www.sammobile.com/2014/05/09...ith-qhd-display-snapdragon-805-android-4-4-3/

That is exactly how I compare the two devices just a lot more detailed lol.
In September/October should be the note 4 release and if I wouldn't have the note 3 now I would definitely wait. (I will probably still upgrade cause of my cell phone interest/addiction)
Guys, thanks for the replies and, Shadow Lea, thanks for the detailed comparison! I'm sure that it is close, but which one would you say has better battery life?

I'd say they're fairly even matched. The S5 is smaller, but has a smaller battery. I do feel my Note 3 lasts a bit longer, but maybe because I put more effort into extending the batterylife.
I am seeking some clarity. Exactly which Snapdragon 800 chipset is in the AT&T Galaxy Note 3? This article assumes that it is the variant with ram clocked at 933 MHz and the GPU at 550 MHz:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/snapdragon-801-performance-xperia-z2,3777-3.html
However, I've seen articles that have the ram at 800 MHz and the GPU at 450 MHz. Which is correct?
Don't buy the current S5 as Samsung is going to release a better version of it with a better chipset and more RAM and Quad HD display. The Note 3 is just as good for photos, has the S-Pen, speakers at the bottom as stated before, 128 GB Micro SD slot, same screen resolution, more RAM, and almost the same processor speed. W/ the S5, you're just getting features the Note 3 will get sometime later in the year, waterproofing (case can solve that w/ good research), and an easier device to carry around. People joke about my Note 3 a bit saying it's too big, but I honestly don't care because most people use that crappy iPhone 4S or something miniscule.
IMO just wait for the Note 4 right now.
First off - prefer the Note 3 because of the larger screen, however one thing that the others haven't mentioned is that the S5 comes with Kitkat which has restricted access to the SD card. The note 3 might still come with android 4.3 (if you are lucky) which allowed full access to the SD card. Obviously if you don't use the SD card than this is of no interest however if you do then, to me, this is a really important issue. Fortunately I jusy got my phone on a two year contract so I have at least 19 months before I have to worry! (as long as I don't press the firmware upgrade button by mistake!) Hope Google put something better in place in android 4.5 or android 5 or reverse this stupid decision.
What restriction r u talking about? I'm on kk.
@op if you get the chance compare it hands on. I heard a lot of people disliking the size of a note!!! It is most important that u like your phone and feel comfortable or else u regret spending money on it and start threats about strange issues u have in the forum Good luck with your decision. And as I said before at least wait for the note 4 if the screen size isn't a problem.
Google kitkat sd card issues tons of complaints. Someone has even started a petition. Although you can save your photos and music to the sd card all apps must save to a single app specific directory and are not allowed to write to other directories. E.g.take a photo with your phone them try and edit it with another programme. Because you aren't allowed to save it to the original directory you will end up with two copies in different locations. Also when you uninstall an app any data on the sd card will be deleted! Right pain in the ...neck!

Seriously the SD card issue isn't a big deal. The only problem is for old apps. But if you're using a new device, you should download apps that are optimized for your OS instead of running old apps anyways.
If the developer didn't bother with an update for a big permission change then obviously it's a sign that you should find a new app because If the app was like a banking app or something related to work, and they didn't update to 4.4 permissions, then how would you rely on them when a huge exploit for the app is released which leaked all your passwords and vital information?
Rooting allows for you to bypass this, but in all honesty, the play store is filled with new apps that always get updated weekly (especially File sharing apps) and you should use those instead. I understand not everyone can do this, but by choosing to buy a 4.4 device (even if you did an update you should have read up about changes), you automatically assume 4.4 features to be what you will live with.
It's ok. I bought a 4.3 device and read about the changes in 4.4 so I haven't updated. Personally I wanted my phone and next tablet to replace a Windows PC. Android 4.4 won't work for me. So I'll stay on 4.3 until warranty is up then upgrade and root. Next tablet will be a windows 8 not android.

Better than a Note 4?

I love my AT&T Note 4...it's a great thing! It is! But root is *still* not possible. I know people are working feverishly at it and I don't necessarily think it won't happen but I really miss it. Sure, I am one of those rare dudes that use the stylus multiple times a day, as well as all the multitasking/splitscreen stuff, but I can't run some apps that I used to rely on heavily when I took the leap of faith to the Note. One MAJOR thing that bugs the every loving piss out of me is the fact that I can't flash a custom ROM! I know temporary root has been achieved but, from what I understand, that's not good enough to flash a custom recovery and ROM, AND I can't use my root apps like SSHTunnel.
Anyway...blah blah...Seeing this phone makes me want to toss the Note 4 on eBay. Yes, the screen is lame but the CPU is epic and it's much more open.
I might be down to let the 4 go but there are a few hangups: That invite system. How the HELL am I supposed to get an invite? Another hangup is that screen...it's "only" 1080p...how does it look? Is it a good piece of hardware? I'm sure I'll miss the 4's screen but if the 1080 screen looks good overall, I might be able to deal due to the hackability and the CPU.
Overall, I'm just looking for some feedback and overall impressions of the phone when it becomes more widely available. Think it's a worthy upgrade from the Note 4?
I had used Samsung Galaxy Phones starting from the S2 > S3 > Note 2 > Note 3 and then moved to the Oneplus One.
Here are the key differences :
1. If you have a taste for the saturation of the AMOLED display, you will miss it. The Deep Blacks are spectacular on the Samsung Flagships (Ive seen the note 4 too) However i was pleasently surprised by the Clarity of the Oneplus One. The pentile matrix of the AMOLED displays on the galaxy range does leave room for more clarity and the Oneplus Display though not as saturated was as bright and it was more crisp/clear. Today after 8 months of using the OPO i will not go back to an AMOLED unless they do away with the Pentile matrix (I am yet to sample a QHD AMOLED display though)
2. OPO ran CM 11/12 vs Touchiwiz /custom roms on The Note 3. Although i liked some features of Touchwiz , the overall look was not to my taste. Custom Roms though available come with thier own bugs. Having used the OPO and also having liked CM early on i was happy for the native support. I am a tinkerer, run a lot of root apps, Hence i loved the OPO where i dont lose my warranty on rooting/unlocking. Also CM/Oxygen are far less bloated than other ROMs hence I enjoyed snappier performance and better battery life compared to the Note 3.
3. I did like the oneplus one in terms of its looks but the note 4 looked better. i chose the oneplus because i could just trade my one year old Note 3 and get the OPO at no extra cost. the OP2 looks better, has a metal frame and better styleswap covers. I personally really liked the sandstone black back though, but that is a matter of taste. At less than half Price of the Note 4 the OPO was a steal.
4. The OP2 has 4gb of DDR4 Ram, so i expect better performance than anything else out there. I however do not game much, or use too many apps simultaneously so i dont forsee a heating issue for me using the SD810.
5. The Note 4 Camera is most likely better than the OP2. But this is just speculation at this point.
To sum up : The OP2 is newer hardware, root friendly, bloat free, will likely have good developer support. It does lack MicroSD expansion, NFC,quick charge. If you want to experiment with a new device offering near pure android, at a very reasonable price - i would vote for the OP2.

This is not the fault of Samsung or your Note 4, but your carrier. Get a phone through Verizon or AT&T and be prepared to be punished with a locked bootloader.

Awesome reply. Thanks for the feedback!
I'm still a bit on the fence about it...good to hear the screen is good, though. That's one thing I am COMPLETELY spoiled with...the Note 4's screen is simply unparalleled.
There is nothing about the Note 4 that I hate and I'd truly miss the SmartPen...I'm one of the few that actually use the thing every day. I also love the multitasking functionality and use it all the time.
But, the "don't listen too loud" nanny every time I plug headphones in, the "how to clear app defaults" every damn time I set one, the COMPLETELY random battery life (some days, after my 12hr shift, it'll be at 40-45%...other days it'll be at 5%...you never know...) and, obviously, the lack of root and the EPIC OP2 amongst other things all add up to me considering making the switch. The fact that the Note 4 goes for 400-450 on eBay doesn't hurt things, either. My Note 4 is pristine. I even have all the original box/papers/etc that it came with.
I'm going to think about it for a little while and we'll see. Right now I'm thinking I'm going to do it.
Oh...and...how does one go about getting a OP2 invite?

I'm not begging or entering any stupid contests to get a 1+2 invite. I'm the customer and OnePlus wants my business, not the other way around. If an invite doesn't fall in my lap, I'll get something else from a company ready to do business with me.
Agreed. I definitely don't like the business model. I'm not JUST holding out of a OP2...I'm VERY intrigued by the upcoming Nexus...I adored my Nexus 4. Had that thing for a long ass time. The OP2 is very Nexus-ish...I just don't get why they don't just sell the stupid things...why be difficult about it?

Think it's a worthy upgrade from the Note 4?

the best phone is the one with the best final user experience which is much more about software than hardware. hence your question is almost answered LOL, a phone which is either impossible or difficult to root and unlock is never ever better than a perfectly set up phone rom, kernel. launcher and root app wise. having said that the only remaining criteria are: display size to footprint ratio, weight, design ( should not be ugly ) and basic specs like camera memory cpu ram and battery life. those depend of course on personal preference as well as personal usage patterns.
so if you do not need 128GB or more memory and if you do not need the pen under all circustance etc. etc. the OP2 is far better because it's customizable to the edge and the hardware specs are in parts better, in parts equal and in parts not available, so what counts is what are your priorities.
Op if you rely on the stylus pen like me, as I do a lot of typing. Then just stay with the n4. The n5 is also around the corner and am sure it will blow away the oneplus no doubt.
Applsung note 5 - no thank you
I know the Oneplus 2 has not removable battery or sd support but it's going to be at least half the price possibly more looking at pricing of s6 etc
64gb is just about enough for my needs and my note 4 stylus is a redundant piece for myself of course
Wow the ATT Note 4 still doesn't have official root yet, almost one year later ? WTF F. you ATT and Scamsung for allowing ATT to control you like that.
Just on principle alone, I'd ditch that Note 4 and pick up the OnePlus Two and the freedom to do what you want with your phone. Plus Oxygen OS will be way lighter and smoother than the god awful Windows 95 inspired Touchwizz.
