I am currently using an unrooted, completely stock nexus 7 running stock 4.2 jelly bean. My questions are: how can I create a backup of my tablet before I unlock and root? And what is the best/ easiest way to root my tablet without any issues.
Thanks in advance!

I used wugs root toolkit in the dev section. It has an option to backup before rooting.

Not really much of a point having the ability to get OTA when a new one comes out, a dev will do what is below shortly after anyway. OTA's are over rated..
Android OS, 4.1.1 Jellybean build JRO03D
Insecure boot.img
Rooted with the latest superuser
Busybox
Deodexed and Odexed options
Fully Zipaligned

Note that the downloads apparently don't work at the moment.
If you used the nexus root toolkit, it has the factory image there for you to flash back to stock and/or unroot/relock the device. Windows users only. -Ara

So is there no flashable zip for stock? I am a Mac. I rooted on my little brother's PC but he lives 1600 miles from me.

Did you take a look at the [Guide] Returning to Stock and/or Unbricking your device directions in the Nexus 7 Android Development forum?
If using a Mac, see the following link for setting up ADB/Fastboot drivers on Mac OS X.

Edit to add: Factory image for the Nexus 7 can be downloaded at this Google link.

I just received my nexus 7 and there's already an update available. I plan on rooting and flashing a custom rom. Should I update or not? I know sometimes an update can cause problems when it comes to rooting and whatnot so I thought I'd ask first.. thanks for any feedback!

Yes update it. I updated to 4.1.1 first then unlocked, then rooted with permanent cwm then flashed touch cwm from rom manager.
Use nexus toolkit though so you can restore stock recovery to flash Amy new updates and root again easily.
Also no harm updating to 4.1.1 and then rooting we have methods set up for that right now.

You can root it before or after update, you're just updating to 4.1.1, or you can install a ROM that is already there, if you're rooting either way, just go for it right away

Thanks a lot for your quick responses! Lovin it so far no issues like I've heard about.

This is a nexus device. Unlike other devices you never need to fear an update may break your ability to root.

Hello-
I was wondering if its possible to unroot my N7 and return to stock if I decide to root it. Also, if there is a system update , what happens? Do I lose root and must reroot it or do I keep root?
Thanks,
wws

You can easily unroot a nexus device with using google factory images and flash them. then you are 100% stock and unroot.
normally update via ota is not possible while in root or if, it may removed after doing it.
Or use the wugs Nexus 7 root toolkit. There's an option to unroot and to flash stock.

Hi
Just a quick question , is it possible to root again on 4.1.2 if you were on 4.1.1 stock only rooted not unlocked.
Without loosing all the data?
Cheers

Why would you want to relock?
Just unlock, root and be done with it.

Unlocked and rooted now. Just made the regular backup through rooting toolkit and voila and everything back to as it was after restore. Didn't take too LNG either for backup or restore.

@krelvinaz
as unlocking bootloader is not necessary for me (i dont flash new roms , ...etc )
also you know that feeling you are doing something wrong took me awhile (lack of courage) to root
@ghostaa
noob question , did the backup restores everything (even the widgets you placed on your home screens, i hate to customize it again)
Nope backup didn't restore the widgets but apart from it everything else was!
Hope this would help...

i had nexus7 32gb with android 4.1.1 / kernel 3.1.10 (without any modification, stock rom, without root, without unlock etc.)
i want to upgrade to latest android,
which way for upgrade is proper for my device?
firstly upgrade than root
or
firstly root than upgrade
upgrade then root. If you rooted first you would lose root with the upgrade and have to root again. Just upgrade first then root:good:
I would root first and update after that. Use the OTA rootkeeper app to keep root. (A lot of people had trouble rooting their device on 4.2)
