How to install roms? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've rooted, installed a custom recovery.. but I cant seem to mount my storage to transfer rom files to my N7. Is there another manner of installing a rom?

Download them directly to your tablet. I haven't done PC transfer for ROM files since my first ROM or two on my skyrocket. Its an unnecessary burden. I flashed aokp today on my nexus 7. The downloaded files show up in your downloads folder. You could make a specific folder if you wish

Have never transfered files through a usb cable since I found out about apps like Wifi explorer Pro or Airdroid.
Personally I use Wifi explorer pro to transfer files from and to my PC wirelessly

You can use adb push and adb pull commands too

Ive done that, but im trying to install Paranoid Android. He requests that we do a factory restore.. which wipes everything as I understand it. So wont the downloads folder be wiped as well?

Wiping data, system, cache and dalvik cache would suffice to install any rom.
All these procedures do NOT wipe ur sd card
EDIT: To be more precise if you are using TWRP just do a factory reset from the wipe options there and then wipe system, cache and dalvik cache.
Then install the ROM.
You will be fine

^^ I feel like an idiot lol. So excited to play with the thing, checkedout on common sense. Thanks guys!

[Q] No room to put dalvik back.......

Im currently running s2e and i have no room to put dalvik back onto the internal memory. I wondering if i can just go into root explorer and go into /data/dalvik-cache/ and delete everything to clear dalvik? so like right before flashing a rom? I just want to see if this method works. I used to do a titanium back up, and then start deleting apps that were pretty large to make room for dalvik and that's a big pain in the booty. thanks guys.

You can make an Ubuntu installation cd (I actually use an Ubuntu USB). You can actually run Ubuntu from a disc, no need to install. From there you can actually mount the ext as USB storage and add/delete things from it.
The Ubuntu website has Ubuntu for download for free and also provides instructions on making a bootable disc.

Ill have to check Ubuntu out. Especially if I can do it via USB. I was wondering If i weren't by a computer, is there a way like root explorer or a terminal command? Im usually never by a computer. Just seeing some more options.

If you have a root access file manager such as Root Explorer you can delete the dalvik cache easy. In Root Explorer go to:
/sd-ext/dalvik-cache/
just select all and delete it power off the phone/boot into recovery. Im not sure if this will also clear the dalvik in /data/dalvik-cache, so you may want to check that as well. The sd-ext and /data/ are both able to be modified with the phone on. I personally use Root Explorer. Sure it costs, but its the best file manager around. I use to wipe the dalvik off the sd-ext, but never thought to wipe the /data/dalvik-cache. I usually just wipe sd-ext from RE, and then boot into recovery and wipe dalvik that way too just to be on the safe side. But I suppose its easier to just use R.E. to wipe it all
Just relized that my work is very strict on running programs off of CDs and usb. So ubuntu wont work for me. Thanks so much though. anybody else out there have a different way of clearing dalvik on ext3 without a computer or moving back onto internal memory?

Read the post above yours
EDIT: You can use EStrongs File Explorer to do the same thing and its Free in the market. You have to go into settings and scroll all the way down to Root Options and select the two check boxes first. Then you will be able to access the sd-ext and /data/
Didn't see that post above. Oopps. I have RE. I will try this out. Thanks again.

When you chose FORMAT DATA, what did you do later to install a new rom?
Format Data = erase Internal Storage. You want to do a factory reset when changing ROMs

[Q] Wiping all data

I recently moved from AOKP to PACMAN. After flashing pacman successfully all my gallery and media files were still there.
After that I even did factory reset. Still files are there. free space is just 7GB or something.
I had Asphalt 7 installed in AOKP, I believe its still eating huge space in PACMAN.
How can I wipe that data (including old app data and some trash) without damaging ROM installed?

Asphalt's a Gameloft game right? If so, then you should be able to delete all gameloft data fairly easily by finding the /gameloft folder (should be on the root of your SD) and deleting it. I don't see how it would break anything to do with the ROM, the worst case scenario is just that you lose some game data.

[Q] Flashing Omni created another partition?

Hey guys, hope you can help me out with a problem I've having after flashing Omni this week. I'm currently on the 11/28 nightly and I used to be on CM10.2. I have AT&T Galaxy Note 2 i317
So here's my problem:
- I wiped cache/dalvik/data and flashed Omni and every works fine
- However, I noticed that Omni may have created a new partition on top of my files and data from CM
- When I'm in CWM recovery, install from /sdcard, I see a folder called /0 and a bunch of folders/files from my CM10.2 days
- /0 is where I would access files saved through Omni
This is the first time I've encountered this problem. I have flashed many ROMs before deciding on living with CM; I've used Jedi, Carbon, PA, MIUI, etc and I've never had an extra partition. I cant even find the "CM partition" via root browser or ES File.
The CM partition is taking up 4GB of my storage so I would really like to delete it.
Anyone have any ideas as to how I would delete the CM partition?

If you are asking where the "/0" directory came from, that is from any version of android 4.2+ (google did that for multi-user support)
Other than that if I didn't answer your question please rephrase it as there is no real question which is usually depicted by a "?" at the end of the sentence/question.

Thanks,
Basically, I want to delete the files/folders from CM partition. Im only using Omni so theres no point having data for CM.
It's currently hogging up 4GB of my storage. I tried to delete it using Root Browser, ES File, etc but it cant access it (probably, like you said, its due to the multi-user support)
Any ideas?

Well a lot of the 4GB is pictures, music, and flashable CM10 and GAPPs zip.
In the Philz recovery there is an option to wipe everything. Is there such an option in CWM? I tried wipe system/factory reset but that only clears the 0/ directory

One should say factory reset the other should say wipe data or internal storage, using twrp it actually says internal storage

[trick] switching roms without loosing adopted sd data[mm]

Marshmallow had a new cool feature of adopted storage but all the flashoholics had trouble in changing roms because they have to format sd card every time they change roms .
I have a solution.
1:- while flashing rom wipe system dalvik cache and cache but dont wipe data .
2:- flash the rom and let it optimize apps .
3:- after optimizations most probably you will be in bootloop , simply boot into recovery and wipe data and reboot.
4:- your phone will optimize apps again and this time it will boot up and you can access sd card as adopted storage without need to format it again as internal.
This trick worked for me and should work for you guys too.
There's another method that is :-
1:- navigate to root folder
2:- copy all the files from data/misc/vold to somewhere in SD card
3:now boot to recovery wipe everything except SD card and flash new ROM .
4:- now using twrp's file manager move the files you from step 2 to the same folder I.e. data/misc/vold
5:-reboot
According to twrp dev, you can use this trick ' Note, if you factory reset and leave the key present in /data/misc/vold, then Android will still detect and use the adopted storage on the next boot.'

If I dirty flash a rom by just clearing the cache and dalvik cache, will the old adopted sd card setting work or will I have to follow your procedure even then also?

Yup but most probably you will get boot loop if you have installed significant number of apps....so clean flash is advised......and use the trick mentioned

Sorry for bringing up this old thread again, but I've an issue where I had to hard reset in order to get root on my Moto X Pure. I didn't think about whether or not I should make any backups of my sd or nand.
I thought I could just continue using the sd as adopted storage on my new ROM.
Anyways, when doing this trick do I leave the sd card inside?

Just copy it to your SD card using file manager. Then when you flash ROM, go into twrp file manager and copy-paste it back to vold folder.
However, if you are on a nougat ROM then you don't need this entire trick at all! Just flash ROM without this trick. The .key will take care of itself automatically without any problem.

Well, in TWRP file manager, don't you see the option 'sdcard' ? Go to TWRP > Advanced > file manager > sdcard.
I'm also using SD as internal and flashing ROMs and stuff without using this trick (on nougat).
