[Q] About custom ROMS and kernels? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry if this is in the wrong spot. So I am new to android devices since I just bought my Nexus 7 a week ago. I saw some youtube videos on flashing roms and kernels but I was wondering what the best roms are for the nexus 7. I want something which doesn't drain battery life as fast as the 4.2 jellybean stock. Also, are kernels important? I looked at threads on these forums but I still don't understand which one. I saw paranoidandroid but I don't think it is great for 4.2 yet?

Check the Nexus 7 forum section. The Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 have nothing in common other than the name "Nexus". Different CPU/GPU/Screen...everything.

1 or 2 question about the Nexus 7 Android Development

Hi,
i am new to this device and i want to calrify some things first. I own a Samsung Galaxy Nexus (previously Nexus One) and i am familiar to the dev sections of android/nexus devices.
1. What i do not understand is why the dev section is separated into Nexus 7 Android Development and Nexus 7 Original Development.
I there any difference between these devices or are they the same? I am in europe - which one do i usually get?
2. What is a good ROM to start with? What i am basically looking for is a fast and lean ROM with a very stock look and very good battery life. I am also looking for a true tablet UI look as it is on the transformer prime for instance. I mean i dont want those dock icons on the right when i hold the N7 horizontally...
Any suggestions? :fingers-crossed:
Thanks in advance

1.original android development means that the devs there started the work from scratch/ or based from stock rom while android development is the place where people use other roms as a base and put their improvements into it (correct me if i'm wrong though)
2. you can try them all out check what fits your standard and look at the features if it has what you want try paranoid since it offers options which can make N7 look like tab
for question #2, try out Paranoid Android. that should give you the feel you are looking for in a tablet.
^^ what they said. PA for that tablet feel and while you are at it may I recommend Franco's kernel

[Q] Kernels informations

So :
franco
mskip
faux123
mathkid95
Released their kernels for the nexus 4 but none of them explained what they changed, so I would like to know what do you know about each developer kernels, what they add/do/change usually that makes their kernel better for OC or long battery life or what ever.
I think Franco and mskip don't even actually have the device yet. That's probably the main reason why there is no official changelog per se. Also I believe the kernels right now are beta's.

But all of them already created kernels for other devices so I was wondering what were their usual preferences

I'm sure that you could track down each of their threads and check it out. These kernels are basically starter threads for what is to come...just wait and you will see changelogs. Usually 1st release is stock or close to it.

Best 4.2 ROM?

Looking for a new ROM to try. I know 4.2 is newer, what seems to be the most stable one so far? Any bugs I should know about? Looking for something real fast stable.
If you do a quick search, you will note that there are countless threads that ask this very same question and that they are invariably locked as soon as a mod catches wind of it, because there is only one single answer to your question that has any truth value...
There exists no such thing as the best rom. Go to the dev forums, do some reading, pick a few ROMs that pique your interest, and them take them for a test drive. Only you can answer the " best whatever" question for yourself.

The above is true. However, after trying several 4.2 ROMs, I suggest that you take a good look at Paranoid Android. I am using 2.99 beta 9 and it's stable and extremely configurable. I love it. To make it perfect you can consider flashing Franco's kernel as well.
Try smoothrom 4.2.1. Its great

Seems like lots of nexus 4 issues after rooting/custom ROM

I've been flashing ROMs for years on my devices, and my new nexus arrives in a couple of days, replacing my amazing Samsung Vibrant (currently whizzing along on a very fast and stable 4.2.1 build)..... hard to believe a phone that's coming on 3+ years old and was dropped by T-Mobile at Froyo!
Seems that folk's flashing custom ROMs/kernels are having a ton of issues, and my question is this.
If the concept of the nexus device is pure Google and the latest stable ROMs, why bother flashing half-baked ROMs that cause problems?
I would assume the nexus 4 has the latest 4.2.1 build and should be stable, no?
Just trying to figure out the advantages of flashing problematic custom ROMs when this phone gets tested, stable latest builds?
How can you possibly stay ahead of Google if this phone gets the latest update as soon as it's available?
Thanks, looking forward to joining the nexus 4 community.
Hello and welcome to the Nexus community.
People usually flash custom ROM not for latest build but latest features. Google might have latest builds going on with nexus line but there are many features that only custom ROM offers. For example, making a quick toggle actual toggle, not a quick shortcut.
Also custom ROM for nexus have been much more stable than other phones since nexus phones already is running stock android, which is very close to AOSP, developers don't need to do a lot of work for basic features.
With these being said, I'm sticking with stock rooted mainly because features custom Roms provide isn't really needed for me and definitely not worth losing a bit of stability. But everyone is different.

Cool, appreciate the reply.
I see you are running stock ROM, but custom kernel? Does the kernel help with improving battery life? I've read that the battery life on the nexus 4 is lack luster and will only get you through a day of average usage before needing a charge?
That will be the only thing that I will flash - kernels that improve smoothness of experience and increase battery life.
I recall the original Vibrant ROM's were good but battery was crap. Over time and with a very strong (still to this day) developer community, I'm getting a couple of days with average use....and that's on an old battery too!
I should get my phone delivered tomorrow, so am excited to see how it compares to my aging Vibrant (running HellyBean 4.2.1 and it's really very very fast).
Cheers!
Yes I am using Franco kernel because it gives me extra battery life while giving a smooth experience. Franco was smart enough to fix a problem that Google caused

Does having TWRP and Stock ROM still allow OTA Google Updates?

I see that you have stock ROM but rooted with TWRP - I just completed this setup, despite being a little tricky as the auto downloads/updates from Wugfresh were not working (not an AV/Firewall issue - had them all turned off) so had to do a lot of manual install.
Anyway, my question is this:
If I stick with stock ROM and Franco Kernel, will I still get OTA updates from Google?
I'm not really interested in custom ROM's right now and would rather get the latest official from Google - I am assuming that is what you also want, hence emulating your setup.
Thanks.

Um as far as I know, technically yes, you will receive updates from Google. But I've heard that any modification can effect the update so I'm not expecting to use ota but I believe that great developers from xda will surely release a stock updated ROM with root and everything that you can flash on twrp. That's what I've been doing with galaxy nexus before using nexus 4

I'm running the latest CM10.1 nightlies and have had no issues and great battery life.
My wife is running stock, unrooted with no issues and great battery life.
Keep in mind that it's the people with issues who are most vocal. I'm guessing that the majority have no problems either way.
Aosp is the same as stock. All nexus roms base on aosp plus officially supplied drivers. That means Google Android as you know it runs stable. Features on top of that are in development and that is what may cause some issues, but only if you use these features and only in their isolated scope. No one ever suffers from missing Wi-Fi, gps, Bluetooth, etc. I don't think i would put a rom on a non nexus device, the only reason i buy nexus is because it's an open platform and i can enjoy cool ideas and features.

Been out of N4 loop...what's the most popular 4.3 roms these days?

I've been using a Galaxy S4 lately and just stumbled on to the fact that I actually can get LTE on my Nexus 4 (didn't work for me the first time I tried several months ago). So, I'm back, rocking my N4 and just wondering which roms are the happening ones nowadays. Thanks in advance for your feedback
Sorry we don't do best roms thread around these parts, you can check out the development section and see which rom thread have the most views, that is the most popular.
Also we're moving to 4.4 already.

I didn't ask which was the best. thanks though
Here's the thread with all the roms/kernels.

For me, personally, I'd been using Paranoid Android 3.99 as my DD (daily driver) for the longest, I can't use my phone without PIE or HALO now. But all the devs and many users are gearing up for Google to release the Kitkat source code in the coming weeks for the Nexus 4.
