Very interesting.
Ancient dual core Xoom is performing pretty darn well vs the brand new quad core Nexus 7, especially since you have a live wallpaper running on the Xoom while you have a static wallpaper on the Nexus 7.
If you don't try to level the playing field, what kind of conclusions can we draw from the comparison?
thanx for sharing.
I am really happy having the xoom ;-)

I think Xoom is starting to show it's age. It's by no means an unpleasant experience. But side by side, it tells me it's time to upgrade. Problem is,I don't know a device like the zoom that offers awesome dev supports from here because it's ged, and also has lte...

I get you...looking for a new toy but nothing out there currently temps me...the Nexus 7 seems to have some production flaws and is pretty limited by low amount of storage and will be fun for media/web browsing/reading, but not useful for productivity, which I depend on the Xoom for when on the road. Perhaps the Asus Transformer Infinity will be a satisfactory upgrade...I wish Google would call on Moto for the next Nexus tablet...Moto builds are rock-solid, and the GED versions have a long life, like our OG Xoom.
And I have never found a live wallpaper works well on the Xoom...just hogs too much processing power/ram.
As mentioned on your YouTube video, the different screen sizes and the distance the animation must travel may make the zoom appear not to be as smooth. Also one is a tegra2 and the other is a newer tegra3.

when I get home,I will make a second video with both static wallpapers. I honestly forgot Xoom had the kind wallpaper. So relax
I will most certainly make a video with a stable eos 3.0.0 when it comes out. But right now, it's all we got. There were also people disagreeing with me when I said it's not very smooth. So I posted this to show.

I disagree, I'm not talking about when animations stop. It's the frame rate when like chrome comes into view. It's hard to explain. I understand it will take longer to finish the animation because it has more screen to cover. Also look when I scroll seeing chrome.
And yes, tegra 2, vs tegra 3. That's why I think it's happening. Both machines are running fast as they could. You just can't make the xoom smooth as nexus because of the dual core 1ghz tegra 2, vs quad core 1.3ghz nexus 7.
But anyway, I'm going to make a video comparing the 2 on static wallpaper. I think that's gonna make a difference.

Indeed. I'm just mad my girl had the faster tablet. Lol.. but I'm not about to give up my lte connection, and I prefer 10" screen. A tablet isn't something I put in my pocket (or my purse lol) so if I'm tagging it along, I'll take the extra estate is a bigger screen.
The 7 is perfect my girl though, because she just puts it in her purse.

Erm, I'd say the Nexus 7 qualifies as a premium tablet too albeit of 7in variety. Let's not forget it is being sold at cost or it could easily command extra 30% or so in price.

A 7" vs. a 10"? One would expect quicker response on a smaller and more powerful unit. But I fail to SEE the "BIG" difference.
Hello all
I will be getting a Nexus tablet this Xmas, it will either be 32gb N7 or 16gb N10.
I'm very torn to which I should go for.
I currently have an iPad and I'm happy to be leaving IOS but I'm not sure how I'd 7" display on the N7.
My gut feeling is N7 due to the size but I'm not sure due to the size!!!
I know indecisive but that why I'm asking for your opinions.
Thank you in advance.
Do what i'm doing. Go to Sams club buy yourself a 32 gb nexus 7 use it for up to 90 days, return it and try the nexus 10 same way.
Only you can answer this really it completely depends on tour usage. I don't think it will be superior its just different. They are both nexus and both very high end devicea

Nexus 10 will probably be the "better" tablet but it really depends on what you want. If you want to carry your tablet around everywhere then the Nexus 7 is probably a better choice. If it's going to stay at home most of the time then Nexus 10. If you're going to be watching a lot of movies then Nexus 10 is better. For reading books Nexus 7.
Nexus 7
-Small form factor (easy to carry around, very portable)
-Smaller form factor also makes it great for gaming
-Good for reading eBooks
Nexus 10
-Beautiful screen (great for videos and games)
-Better hardware
I'm waiting for a truck load of reviews.. One review I read already puts me in the `not buying' category.. I don't trust Samsumg with tablets.. They have a good track record with throwing awesome hardware into a tablet and having it perform like a Celeron trying to run Windows Vista with 512MB of RAM. I already have one 10 inch paperweight of theirs.. I'm not looking for another.

The N7 is a show stopper considering the price.. The N10 has (imo) A LOT to live up to considering it's twice as much as the N7.. For double the price I sure as hell better be getting more than 3inches of screen, 400mhz and Antutu scores that ring in 4000 points lower than my N7 along with other benchmarks that are worse than my N7.. I'm 35 and well beyond buying junk for material reasons and it's looking like the N10 is going to be just that.

While I cannot speak for the Nexus 10, I do own the Nexus 7 and believe the light weight and form factor to be its greatest strengths. I used to own an iPad 3, but sold it after getting the Nexus 7. The iPad always felt a little too big and heavy for use at home. In many instances I simply used my laptop/PC instead. The 7" form factor is perfect for browsing the web, reading eBooks, watching 720p movies, etc. while on the go or moving around the house.
Also, the one concern I would have in regards to the Nexus 10 are the applications themselves. From my experience with the N7, many apps on the Play market are not tablet optimized. There are basically many apps that are essentially made for phones that are blown up to fit the Nexus 7. It does not look too bad on a 7" screen, but I can only imagine phone apps being a complete waste of space on a 10" tablet. I think in time Android will get more tablet specific apps though.
Well you already have a 10 inch tablet so why not add a 7 incher to your stable? The portability and light weight of the nexus 7 really adds to its usefulness and ease of use. Reading a few reviews of the n10 is a good idea though before making your decision.
Not to encourage greed, but if this is going to be a gift then you might want to opt for the more valuable n10.
I would suggest asking this in the Nexus 10 forums too, just to get their point of view. Overall , you're going to get a bias opinion in the Nexus 7 forums and the Nexus 10 forums, just spread it out a bit.
I would suggest the N7 for its price, HD screen and form factor. It handles anything (that's optimised, **** you gameloft) you throw at it and doubles as an eReader and gaming device. The N10 is undoubtedly better for watching moves with its retina crushing 2560 x 1600 resolution screen and browsing the web, however for £130 less the N7 does that just as well. The N7 has served me well for the last 4 months or so, it lasts me a full days usage and I use it heavily as I travel a lot. My usages contains reading, albeit I a small amount, gaming, browsing, music, IRC, Text based games and watching videos. It'll survive about 6 hours screen time with full brightness and wifi.
Thank you all for your advice, I am fairly certain it will be the N7. It will be a gift and also a replacement for the iPad. I look forward to coming back to this forum when start flashing those ROM's.

but will the screen be good for watching movies or will it be too small? what about battery life?
Hi. I've been using the N7 (32 TV WiFi only) for almost 2 months. The first time saw it in a shop, I thought the screen is kinda small. But after trying it out for quite awhile, I find that it's just about right. Watching videos, browsing the internet or playing games is not a problem in terms of screen size. The 'neutral colors' of the screen is not an issue for me. I'm happy with the performance of the N7. I'm sure your cousin will like it. And holding the N7 with one hand is not that unwieldy. HATH.

I love the 7 inch size. Sold my iPad
Nexus 7, iPad Mini, Kindle Fire. Pick your poison.
I frankly think that 7" is a sweet spot for tablets: easy and comfortable to hold with one hand and large enough to watch movies. The iPad mini at 8" is already uncomfortable to use with one hand, for example.
The N7 has excellent audio output, incidentally.
Last but not least, as someone else already pointed out, there is nothing comparable at this price level.

Just ordered this one for $229 shipped. Couldn't pass it up especially since the TAB 2 screen is really washed out compared to my Note 2 and I cannot access media off the 64GB SD card except through file explorers. Media apps did not like ExFat or Fat32. Kind of disappointed with the Tab 2. After I get the Nexus I will play with both and see which will be the keeper.

7" is what I would call the best screen size for a tablet - I've gone through an original iPad and a slightly smaller Archos tablet and the nexus 7 really is the right size and shape for everything I use it for, its made the full size iPad feel unwieldy to me.
And as for going into a shop and playing about with one, just before Christmas I was in Comet (UK) with a friend and I had a quick play about with the shop floor one and it'd be loaded up with so many active widgets it was like a slideshow, so I'm not sure that's the best example

Agreed. Bought the wife a TAB 10.1 and that thing is a beast. Great for her as she uses it to replace her sheet music on gigs. At $229 to my door I couldn't pass up giving it few rounds vs the TAB 2 7 P3100.

Do you guys think it's a good change or not worth it? My main reason alone is size.
Normally I like bigger tablets, but the 16:10 aspect ratio of the Nexus 10 combined with a 10.10 inch screen size makes it really uncomfortable to use in both portrait and landscape.
In portrait its too long and tall and in landscape not much content is shown on websites, forums, etc.
So that's why I'm thinking the Nexus 7 might be a better choice for me. I tried the original 7 a couple of weeks ago and it was nice. I'm concerned I might miss the bigger screen of the 10 too much, specially for web browsing and videos. Everything else should be better in the 7: playing games (the 10 is too big to play games comfortably in landscape. My thumbs almost don't reach the on screen buttons), reading forums with Tapatalk, YouTube browsing, eBook reading, e-mail, viewing pictures, etc.
Plus with the 7 I would get 32GB for much less than with another Nexus 10. Mine is 16GB now.
Anyone has changed from a Nexus 10 to the new 7? It still has 2GB RAM, HD screen, etc. So it's not that different.
What do you guys think? Should I make the change?
Thanks.

Well you need to check your priorities. Before the nexus 7 I always thought a bigger tablet would be always better. I enjoy more the nexus 7 cause i usae it to read a lot, and the nexus 10 is kinda big to read comfortably, and it's heavy, the nexus 7 is comapct and a great tablet to read check your mail, browse the web and etc...
buut, if you use it like a notebook, with bluetooth keyboard to write documents, or to play games with a bluetooth controller ( that's great) and that kinda stuff the nexus 10 is a better choice.
Today i wouldn't trade my nexus 7 for a nexus 10.
I did (but selling the N10 2 months before the new Nexus 7 became available). I am very happy with the switch. For all intents and purposes, the Nexus 7 took the Nexus 10's soft touch feel and made the screen brighter. It really comes down to a question of style. Do you like the size of magazines and 8x10 notebooks more than the size of hardcover novels and day planners.
Another upside is, if you don't like the Nexus 7, it looks like the Nexus 10 is getting a revision this fall with a much faster processor (and that tablet release will reduce the resale value of the original Nexus 10 just as the original Nexus 7 prices fell with the new one.
What I now want post N7 is a top notch 4.0-4.3" phone (HTC First sized + microSD).

I feel like a powerful home computer, 7 inch tablet, and an LTE smartphone is the best setup you can have.
A ten inch tablet is just too big to be used comfortably around the house. I used to use the iPad 2 a couple years back as my main media consumption device but switched to the OG Nexus 7 on release day. I recently upgraded to the new Nexus 7 and don't plan on switching to anything larger than 8.9 inches.
If I were you I would pick up a 32Gb and see how you like it. If it's not for you then return it and keep your Nexus 10. If you like it then keep it and sell the Nexus 10.
Either way the N10 and N7 are both great tabs you can't go wrong with.

That's a decision only you can make, honestly! You know what your wants and needs are, we don't. I just bought my '13 Nexus 7 last night from my local Best Buy. That said, I still have and still love my Asus Infinity (10" tablet) and I definitely would NOT sell it! I also have an Evo LTE and a Note 2, but wanted a 7" tablet as well. I was going to buy the Nexus 7 at the first of the year, but heard rumors that an HD version was in the works so I waited for it. I'll still use my Asus Infinity as my primary gaming tablet, played Dead Trigger last night actually. Paired with the Sixaxis app and a PS3 controller, it can't be beat! Especially with its mini HDMI port built in to the side and hooked to me 55" LED TV!! I do like that the Nexus 7 is more portable, and will also use it to read my Google Play Magazine subscriptions. No way I could give up my 10" tablet though! If i had to decide between the 2, I'd take back my Nexus 7 and keep my Infinity, no doubt about it! With the ability to have both though, the Nexus 7 is a nice addition to my Android line-up!! If I were you, and had to decide between the 2, then I'd keep the Nexus 10! That's just MY opinion based on my wants/needs though. That's why I say that only you can decide which device fits your wants/needs the best! Good luck with your decision!!

In a word: No.
I have both the N10 and the N7.
The N10 is a better consumption device. The larger screen is better for watching videos, playing games, browsing the web, reading ebooks - you can fit two pages on it at a time- and you can view magazine pages better on it.
The N7 is more portable. You can hold it with one hand.
The screen on the new nexus 7 is really sharp, I can't tell a difference in reading text on it versus the 10. That combined with the better form factor makes the N10 obsolete for me personally. I don't really think Android (or iOS for that matter) is suited for a 10" screen. Sure it helps if you are watching videos but if I'm watching something for longer than 15 mins I will usually just use my Laptop or TV.
The only thing I miss from the nexus 10 was the TRUE rubber back. The new nexus 7 doesn't really compare to the soft touch of the back cover on the N10.
If you vastly prefer the 10" screen though I would recommend selling anyway, that way you can get a nice chunk of change back to purchase the new nexus 10, which will apparently have a qualcomm in it, none of the exynos bull****.
I think you just being hypnotized by the newness of a new nexus, I am feeling this even though pound for pound my note 10.1 is better, but I will say this, the nexus 7 is a very comfortable and portable device

Normally I like bigger tablets, but the 16:10 aspect ratio of the Nexus 10 combined with a 10.10 inch screen size makes it really uncomfortable to use in both portrait and landscape.

I'm with you 100%. I bought the 10 but am going to return it. Other than watching movies, I just don't think 16x10 works for a tablet that big. It's awkward to hold and despite being a huge screen I'm always feeling squeezed and wishing it were 4x3.
I find myself using the 7 more. The only time the 10 wins out is if I'm sitting on the couch and can comfortably rest the 10 on my lap. But as soon as I lie down, move around, etc I am reaching for the 7. I don't love 16x7 on the 7 either but its easy enough to hold and type that the length doesn't hinder usability.
If you could I would do both! I have a n10 and note 8. I mainly use the 8 to travel or take it to work and it fits nicely in my glove compartment. My n10 stays at home and is used to play music, games, watch videos and a huge remote for my TV. Some people might think its too much but I find it perfect for my needs. Ohh and I also have a note 2!!! Thinking of picking up the new n7 for the wife.

guess u can play games easily and good in enw nexus 7! its snap dragon s4pro
It's a hard choice. I like bigger screen tablets because I don't have a laptop, but I've been thinking of changing to another tablet for some months now, just because the Nexus 10 is too uncomfortable to use.
That's the only reason. The 7 is too small for web browsing, but everything else should be ok.
Don't know what to do. I won't buy another 10 inch tablet because all of them have the same aspect ratio, so the only choices are keep the Nexus 10 or buy the 7.
It has to be a Nexus tablet obviously.
I had a nexus 10 back I. December/January that I returned. I like it a lot but I couldn't justify it since I already had a nexus 7. My other complaint was the colors and view angles. I hope the next nexus 10 has the same type of panel as this new nexus 7. This panel is literally perfect.

x100.
I tried browsing the web last night with my N7v2, and the screen was just too small. I had to zoom in every time to accurately click on links or the "Next" button on forums.
I will be returning the N7v2 in about a week though - it's a fun toy and all, but I much prefer my N10.
It's funny because I used to agree with the majority of the posters here, about how the N10 is too uncomfortable to hold. I first bought the N7v1 and thought it was perfect to hold. Then I gave it away. Then I bought an N10 and first thought it was too awkward and cumbersome to hold - but after using it for a few days, I got used to it. I also much preferred the larger screen for everything - gaming, quick YouTube videos, browsing the internet - what I mostly do with it. Reading magazines is a pleasure with the 10 inch screen of the N10, but it's way too small for the N7v2.
The N7v2 also isn't as nice to hold as the N7v1. The N7v2 is narrower in portrait mode - which makes it more difficult to text, because your thumbs are overreaching when you search for keys. The N7v2 is also wider in landscape mode - which makes it more difficult to text, because now your thumbs just can't quite reach the keys as easily. The N7v1 is still the best tablet to hold IMO.
Just my opinion though.

I actually just bought a N7v1 for exactly this reason. I think the v2 is going back. It feels soooo much better in my hands. And while the v2 resolution is better I don't have s lot desire to read microscopic fonts. If the characters are small enough to be jagged on the v1 then I'm pinching and zooming anyway. For fonts that are reasonably sized the v1 ppi is fine.
Call me crazy but for $150 new I'll take the v1 until something more appealing comes along.

I too find that the nexus 7 v1 feels better in hand than the second one, the second one feels too slippery, like its gonna fall of my hands.
But except that I prefer the v 2

The thing I don't like about the n10 is that a lot of phone apps force you to turn it in portrait. Blatantly obvious that it doesn't thrive in portrait.

Already did that!

I'm not too much interested in the next one because it probably will be the same size and aspect ratio as the original Nexus 10, which is my only problem with the tablet: 16:10 aspect ratio is uncomfortable.
That's why I was thinking maybe the Nexus 7 would be better, but I'm still not sure.

Now I understand why my wife doesn't use her iPad Mini as much and use her note a lot more. Since I got my Moto X with 5.1" screen, I barely touched my Nexus 7.
Yes screen is larger on Nexus 7 but it is slower and sluggish compare to moto x and I decided to sell it before it looses more value after Nexus 9.
Now I wonder what would be like to have Nexus 6 or Note 4.

I dunno, it's still a pretty big jump in screen size to the Nexus 7. I don't use my N7 that much because I prefer the iPad Mini by a wide margin, but I don't see myself ever not using a tablet just because my phone has a large screen.
Yeah if I end up using tablet I grab my wife's retina iPad mini. Unless I am about to read books or a long article, I find myself sticking to my phone only

I sell mine when i bought the S3. With the Nexus 5 i was looking for some think to see films.
Tab s 8.4 was my choice, and the screen i ossome but the sistem is not good as the n7.
Nexus 6 maybe will be the final answer. But depend if you like manage a big phone(or a little tablet) all day.
I had a N7 that I ended up giving to my daughter once I got my N5 because I just wasn't using the N7. When I switched to Xfinity, they gave me an iPad mini that I barely use because of my moto X. The only thing I use the mini for is watching Netflix and the Xfinity DVR app.
I just don't see the need for two devices when these phones are so big. Maybe, if phone screen sizes were still like the original iPhone, then I could see it. But that's just my opinion and I also can see why people would need both.
not sure what is wrong with the op's nexus 7. mine is as snappy as anything else i own.
I really enjoy the N7 with Android L. I rather watch a movie on a 7" screen than the 5.2" screen. It'll last me for a while.
I guess for those who don;t mind carrying around a large phone, the Nexus 6 is going to be the ideal all in one device.
Well,
The difference to my Note 10 is still pretty big, but yes, my son now has the Nexus 7. I do see why the 7 was eliminated from the lineup when the new Nexus devices were introduced at 6 and 9. However, for the first time in a long time, the only Nexus device in our household will be used by my son. I wanted the Moto Nexus, but 6" was just too big, so went for the X.

I guess I have lower tolerance and notice lags more than you do. Not only my nexus 7 but my friends nexus 7s ate sluggish compare to 2014 phones.

Yeah, the N7 is definitely showing its age. It's still pretty fast, but it certainly isn't anywhere close to being as fast or as fluid as the current crop of smartphones. That said, I can't wait to get my Nexus 9, that thing is going to be a beast of a tablet. Still gonna hang on to my N7 though, I don't like to get rid of old devices if I like them.

I thought about picking up a nexus 9 as well but decided against it. If I need a tablet I can grab iPad mini retina and I can do most with my Moto X.

I just really want an Android tablet that I like better than my iPad Mini. I was going to buy the Nvidia Shield tablet, but I think the N9 has a better chance at dethroning the iPad.

My dream one day as well. I went through so many android tablets in hope of having a better tablet than iPad.
There are few things that I used to use nexus 7 over phone: reading kindle, reading pdf files, and reading long articles. All reading related and 5.2" are more than enough now. Who knows I might get nexus 9 as well since it has significant size difference.

My Nexus 7 isn't in the junk drawer yet, but ever since getting my 5" screen Droid Maxx last year, followed by the LG G3 and 2014 X, it doesn't get used very often. About all it gets used for is navigation duty.
