Hi,
I am wondering if anyone has used iphone 4s headphones or the new earpods with microphone with Nexus 4. If so, can you provide some feedback in terms of whether or not the buttons and the microphone work to make calls/ use with skype, and/or use with music apps?
Thanks,
I'm also interested if they work on Nexus 4 or not as I want to buy new headphones and my favourite ones seem only to work on iDevices because of the pin assignment and are not recognized by my current phone. Would be nice if someone could check this by plugging in the original Apple headphones and check if you can listen to music with them.
I can confirm that both the middle button and the mic work just fine with the ear pods. Volume buttons don't work, as I expected.
Borrowed a pair off a friend with an iDevice.

I had have quite some problems while talking over the ear phones of earlier Galaxy Nexus and Apple Ear pods as the other person doesn't seem to hear my voice properly, whereas I have seen everything else working properly while listening the music except Volume Controls.
So if you want to buy these for calls and Voice Chatting over VOIP, I suggest to do some enough research on OMTP and CTIA for nexus 4.
for all android and blackberry devices, you can use the pause/mute and mic but volume buttons wont work as they are designed to only work on iDevices

Hi, I have this earphones set with mic built in do not work with the Tab? They do work with the iphone so i know the mic works, the earphones work great with music, I can hear the callers voice but they cant hear me? Is there something I need to do? Like download the voice app for navigation??
Gracias amigos!!!
You probably didn't push the plug all the way in. It happened to me. -_-;
I have Sony headphones too and the Mic and button don't work either. I guess they're just incompatible.

dang, ok, I'm trying to convince my ex to switch with me her iPhone's earphones lol.
they work
so turns out after i bought a cheap hands free set and saw they did work, i was wondering why a cheap set do work and the nice Sony ones don't. So after sawing some of the plastic above the plug didn't make the difference, instead pushing the plug all the way in, I just pulled it our quite a bit and they do work that way, weird after everybody saying to push it very deep. LOL
Does it work on another phone? iPhone, perhaps?
I wonder if the contacts are not positioned the same way as the ones that came with the Tab.
PS: I've verified that the iPhone stereo mic headset works on the Tab just fine - and vice versa. The middle button works, but the volume button doesn't. Appearently, the volume buttons is an iPhone-specific feature.
Does the Nexus S support play/pause and back/forward tracks?
Can anyone who had a Nexus One plug in some HTC headphones and see if they work? AFAIK HTC and Apple use the same control scheme it's just that on the iPhone the controls operate volume while on HTC devices it sends next-track and prev-track to the app. So for all I know the electrical part may be industry standard.
What I'm wondering is: does the Nexus S support extensive headphone control? This is really the only thing holding me back from a purchase as I use those buttons constantly on my N1.
It will play/pause with the mic switch on my Etymotics HF-2 (iPhone compatible) headset. It will not answer/hangup on phone calls. It also will not double-click to advance the track.
If there's a setting to adjust that, I don't see it.
Thanks for the input, but I'm really talking about HTC headphones with dedicated prev/next track buttons.
It should be noted that there are some apps such as meridian music player that support double click to advance even though the hardware does not have it built in. I actually completely forgot about that.
As for hangup and pickup... despite there being an icon on my HTC N1 headphones, that button has *NEVER* worked. I really wonder if it works for anyone on any android phone

Hmmm...I'm not sure I could even find my HTC headphones (the only ones I would have would be the ones that came with the Nexus One. I'll see if I can dig them up. What do they look like, I haven't seen them in 9 months or so? LOL
This is a good question. I use the stock headset on my nexus one, and use the in line button, double tap fast forwards, double tap long press skips track, etc.
Then I just purchased a bose mobile headset for 140 bucks. It has the same one button, in line Mic, etc. It's specifically for cell phones. I had on idea this was a standard, but all the same click functions work just like the stock headset does. And the reviews people said it also worked with all the galaxy s variants, and other cell phones. So It's some type of standard.
And holy crap, the sound quality on this headset is mind blowing! My phone calls and music sounds insane! And the in line Mic is so incredibly good quality, my friends on the other end each asked if I changed something. Said it sounded so clear.
So I decided to install andRecorder and recorded 2 clips one with each headset, stock and bose , and played them back. And sure enough the bose was so insanely clear and crisp compared to stock headset I couldn't believe it.
It's the bose MIE2 mobile headset, and It's literally the best thing I've ever bought for my phone. So highly recommended. Music sounds superb on my phone.

I was sad to discover that it doesn't work.
I tried my Nexus One headphones on my Nexus S, and all three buttons register as the same button (play/pause on single tap, skip on double tap). I really enjoyed having back and forward. That's not even close to being enough of a reason for me to revert to using my Nexus One, though.
EDIT: Would anyone happen to know if it's possible to make it work? The stock Nexus S headphones have 4 conductors, as do the Nexus One headphones, so it's certainly not an electrical problem. I'm assuming it's something at the driver level.

Yes I very likely think it will still work. See my post above about the headset I just bought. Just find the directions for that, its a standard, and try the commands out. A few are double click skips to next track, double click and hold fast forwards, etc. I bet the nexus s accepts all those commands.
Great news, my Etymotic hf2's work perfectly! Including the pause button.
It seems that the alternative config used on the SGS1 is history, hurrah.
oh snap dog this is great news, my MIE2 headset should work perfect then as well. glorious news
The seems to be the case because the original Galaxy S earphones don't work properly on the SGS II, they sound weird and with an echo. Looks like Samsung are learning.
This is good news. I was under the impression that sgs2 also had the weird 3.5mm jack layout.
But if this is true, then could any and all of you that has some play/pause buttoned headphones try this out?

Marvelous! Could you also specify the earphone type (those who don't have a clue what's bundled with iphone) and what functions actually work + the mic?
This should take care most of the other headphones then, because you can easily find info if it's iphone compatible

I'm not sure what type he has. friend told me it works well.

Can I just check if the volume up and down from the inline are working too?
wait a minute i'm a bit confused now. i purchased the bose MIE2 mobile phone headset, with inline mic and single pause button. this headset also has an iphone compatible version right next to it in the store.
i bought the standard mobile phone version, which works fine with the nexus one, nexus s, and any other mobile phone that supports the standard with the single button.
but if you guys are saying the iphone headsets work, does that mean that my standard mobile version will NOT work, since ideally the iphone and standard mobile version are different, else there would not be two seperate versions in teh first place? now i'm confused.
would samsung use the iphone standard and NOT support the mobile phone standard that the rest of the industry uses?
With the release of iPhone 3GS, Apple did something new with their headphones. They expanded from the single button inline control to one with three buttons. The two extra buttons do volume up and down. In order to get this volume +/- thing working, iirc, manufacturers had to implement some new little chip into their headphones.
So Roger I think your headphones would work fine with the single button, but I'm more curious about the volume +/- functionality

thanks. i should have clarified that my headphones DO have the volume up/down in addition to the single inline pause button. i just forgot to consider those volumes into it. so should work then.
still i wonder why two seperate iphone and regular version exists for the MIE2. maybe it is for the OLD iphone before the 3Gs changes were made...

Hello
I am looking for in-ear headphones which support play/pause, microphone and volume control. Preferably this should be accomplished by 3 buttons: middle button for play/pause and left/right buttons for volume control (just like on iOS).
I do not look for one-button or bluetooth solutions.
As I already searched on xda, I found those headphones:

However, I do not know if they work with the Nexus 4 or if there are more headphones available.
Could somebody help me out here please?
I gave up looking for headphones with buttons like those because the main reason you have headphones/earbuds is because of the music or podcasts, with an occasionally call here and there...well for me anyways.
And IMO, the one button is good enough which can be found on most headphones. This "universal" button usually just plays, pauses, answers calls, and now a long press will launch google now.
However, you can add an app called Jays headset app or remotecontrol for earphones app. This will enable the number or clicks to determine certain functions like volume control. GL
the 3 button headphones dont work with this phone. It is my understanding that the devices that support the 3 button controllers have a special circuit that is not present on this phone. I have a samsung 3 button and htc 3 button headset that do not work on this phone. I have tried several of the apps that allow you to program the buttons but they did not help.
Just get a nice single button headset and be happy.
Could you recommend a good single button one? My HTC earphones are screwed and I'm looking for new ones for my nexus.

If you are looking for in ear headphones, you cannot go wrong with Kipsche or Shure's with the integrated mics. If you are on a budget, Jays One + for android is an alternative you can look at for decent in ears.
For over ears, there are so many to look at. You can look at any ones that function for "i" devices and they will work for our phones. It's that ONE button or middle button that is the only thing that you are looking for it to work with your phone.

Sigh. Thanks for the information. After no USB on-to-go and a crappy battery life now this. I wonder what will come next.
I guess I will have to look for good one button headphones and an app which supports altering the function of this button. Any recommendations for such an app?
During my time googling on this very issue i came across these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007IPKBA4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=AEUMIRKFWF0IJ
supposedly made by philips precisely for android. philips says: "Personalise your sound and buttons via the Philips Headset App" so..
however, and if i 'm not mistaken, they 're 1 button headphones - but as another person before me 's said, you apparently can determine what a certain number of clicks will do, so you probably can work around the issue.
i 'm probably getting a pair (not sure if i 'm going with these cause i 'm feeling like investing seeing as i 'm out and about a good chunk of my every day and am always listening to music - being a musician and an audiophile) next month - kinda tight financially atm , so when I do i 'll get back to you guys.
currently stuck w/ the apple headphones (not the earpods). mic works, middle button answers/ends calls and plays/pauses music - volume controls just won't work.
'nyways, hope it helped!

Does anyone else have a problem getting even a 1-button headset to work? It seems I can't even plug it in properly (sound is mono and without bass), and I tried really hard. I tested both an OEM headset that came with my ZTE Blade and a Sony MH650. Both used to work fine on the Blade but on the N4 - no way. Headsets without microphone (and one line less on the headphone jack) work fine.

No the three button headsets are far and between. I haven't seen any that work. I mean even my old N1 headsets don't work. Well the middle button works. The iPhone 3 buttons will not work either.
Just use the one button, which I actually prefer and use an app to map button presses to forward or back up. Tedious? I guess so, but I have no issues with one button headphones. I own a slew of them lol.
I can see where I misread those posts now. No 3 buttons work at all. That sucks.
But what about the people that claim that there are headphones that actually work with the three button?

The support for 3 buttons or not on an Android phone is up to each phonemaker. Samsung Nexus 3 works fine with 3-button headsets for Android, so does the S3, S4, and many more.. while Nexus 4 does not But the Nexus 5 does (!)
I have a Nexus 3 and 4 and I also actually think music sounds better through the Samsung made Nexus but perphaps that is just mental or the sounchip has something to do with it.

They also have a really well working headset app (works with any headset by the way) that makes buttoncontrol programmable, so you can choose what 2,3 or more clicks will do for U.

I've taken a look around for info on why my headset doesn't work properly with my phone but haven't found an explanation. I've seen there are two standards for 3.5mm connectors: CTIA and OMTP. Apple and a bunch of other manufacturers use CTIA and that's what the N4 is. In theory, 'made for iPhone' headsets should work, right?
I have a pair of Urbanears with a single button and that works. The phone always uses its mic and not the headset. Any ideas why this might be?
Thanks!

Yes, if you are talking about the mic, it should work for all CTIA compatible ones. But not so for the other additional buttons such as volume up/down which might be there for the headset.
Did you get an opportunity to try any other headset with nexus 4? For me , with my Galaxy S2 , all the CTIA headsets have worked without any issues. Would be really curious if it doesn't work with N4 , when it arrives.

Well that's weird. Apple earpods work with the Nexus 4, so any headphone that says compatible with iPhone should also work.

The centre button works
The mic works for calls and search.
The volume buttons do not work, but I think we all know this already right ???
I know a lot of people are reporting that their mic on some headphones doesnt work, which is weird.
Thanks for your replies.
This doesn't make much sense to me since I thought that the button controls were passed thru the mic contact so if my buttons work so should my mic. Does anyone think it could be the size of the plug? Maybe because of the shape of the phone the contacts aren't connecting properly?
Off the record,
could someone explain why the volume buttons don't work? Because I never understood this.
Is it a sw or a hw thing?

It shouldn't. SGS1 had tv-out functionality from the 3.5 mm jack due to which Samsung had made some modifications which made it incompatible with other handsets. [ I was using SGS1 before switching to SGS2, but not having the handset now. From what I know, the SGS1 handset wouldn't work with S2 as well ]
So I'm guessing no one else is experiencing the same issue as me? I'm thinking I should try to use one of the set that people have confirmed to be working to see if my socket is faulty.
