Posting this in the forums I haunt. I discovered this threw another issue im dealing with. Really this effects multiple industries as I found out.
This is more for any developer but trying to get the message out.
Google is killing several API services. First one was the Weather API. That one killed any app or query built in a rom sniffing google for weather updates. Anyone that has noticed there weather app suddelny stop working is suffering from this issue. Most Devs have allready updated there API address but if you havent please edit in your next revision. Keep in mind this is only one of many APIs that will be cut off soon. So pull your resorces elsewhere if you can. Sadly that stuff is privately owned and not public so its there right to do so. For whatever reason they are doing this very quietly and without warning. Not sure why but its a problem that will get out of hand quickly if noone knows about it.
Thanks.

The reason they killed the weather API was because it was never intended to be used by the public. It was only supposed to be used on iGoogle, which has been gone for a while now.
Makes sence. Still not good for the multitude of products that use google APIs. Btw that one was cut off recently. igoogle is very much alive. Not very usefull though lol.

I don't think it's a programmer issue. Mine works fine after update with all my info still stored..

Info is still stored but all preferences are gone (e.g. get stupid text notifications, etc)
Worked fine yesterday ... update last night ... settings reset this morning.
I think a bigger issue would be the lack of Google docs support, and the lack of uploading larger videos over 3G instead of WiFi only.

True. But I am really sick and tired of all these promised "feature" that don't work at all or don't work properly.

What other features don't work at all?
Multiple calendar sync is broken.
Contact data entry is extremely limited compared to the web ui.
I do like that I've made the switch to Android from winmo, but am missing a lot of features that I used to have. I was basically free to do anything, but feel so limited now to what Google is giving us. Hopefully this is resolved soon and we are able to get full functionality from our nexus one devices.

google's android has been alive since oct 2008. 2 years.. that's it.
What did you come from? A WM phone? Windows Mobile has been around for 10 years.
p.s. just wikipedia'd android. it says android was initially "Released 9 February 2009" for consumer use
+1
My wife has a WM phone, and can't do ANYTHING with it, other than basic stuff like call and email, etc.
She wants my Nexus...

Android has been through 6 MAJOR versions ... if they can't fix the basics, maybe they shouldn't be competing in the space.
Or maybe Google should stop that dumbass policy of only releasing BETA software. Others seem to be able to release software that works fine, admittedly with less features. Get the basics right and then add features one by one and make sure they all work before releasing them.
Punch them? You can't even see those ninjas!

I have gotten to the point in my project where I can actually see an end. I am sure there is a lot more left to do to wrap up my game, but I wanted to start thinking about the end game for this application(game).
Which brings me here, I was curious what tools/library's/methods indie dev's are using, and your reports on them. Hoping this section will help me decide what to include in my code, and help others too.
I've compiled a very short list. None of which has been tested personally by me. I will update with other people's great ideas. I am sure I have missed quite a few things,
Protecting your App
Obfuscate your code
Helps stop pirating to an extent, pretty easy to implement if articles are anything to go by.
Example:
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/proguard.html
License Verification Library
Also helps stop pirating, lets you refund people and be reasonably assured they aren't still using the product.
Example:
http://developer.android.com/guide/publishing/licensing.html (Android Licensing Library)
Secure Network communications
Needed if you are handling sensitive data in your app. Probably should be included anyways
Misc
Stat Tracking
Probably your number one way to get feedback from people actually using your app. Want to know if it was worth putting in a pause button that took 3 weeks to code? Record how many people are using it!
Examples:
http://www.flurry.com/ (Flurry)
http://code.google.com/mobile/analytics/docs/android/ (Google Analytics)
SaveToSD
I have not looked into this yet, but if comments on apps/games are anything to go by, this is requested quite often.
Here's another:
Crash reporting
I wouldn't rely on Android Market for crash reports because tools like BugSense and ACRA do a much better job. Personally I use BugSense because I prefer the UI but supposedly ACRA collects more data. If I wasn't using it I would never have known my app was crashing on older HTC models because Android Market just doesn't include that kind of info.
I'm just starting to put these in my app, and BugSense seems almost too good to be true. I'm in the process of testing it now, should help a lot in the coming months. Thanks.
Title says it all
Other than the obvious multiple users on one device, and the fact that tablets are often shared in home/family settings, and how Nexus Q, Google TV will take over living rooms, AND the rumors going around Android becoming an official desktop/laptop OS.
One thing thats got me excited about the multi-user function, is how it can be used to manage business AND personal life on the same phone!
What do you guys think? Will it work?
For sure.
I think that would be a great feature if it could separate your home and work life. But I have self restraint not to mix my home and work lives. But at the same time, it's good to see whats going on in both at all times for me.
Some time ago I read something about VM-Ware is working on something like that. I'm sorry, I can't remember the source of this Information. It sounded quite interesting (many chill ideas and features). Perhaps some googling could help you find out more about this. If I remember right it should be right around the corner (2012/2013).

Hi guys.
Does anyone know of a trust worthy app to store login details for different sites, banks ect? Even one I can store my card details for when I'm away without my wallet. Obviously has to he 100% trust worthy.
Cheers in advance.
Well, I do not think you will find one, that ist 100% trustworthy. Nevertheless, there are several Passwordmanagers, that are used by a lot of people.
Here is a link to an article, where the most used ones are introduced. Sorry, it's german, you can translate it with DeepL
Or you can google the managers, mentioned in this article to find out more yourself.
The basic qustions are: Do you trust your passwords to the Cloud? Do you want it to be open source or not? What kind of encryption should be used?
Hope it helps
Try LastPass https://lastpass.com
I love this app. I set all my credentials and logins with it.
I store all my data with google. Since they are basically a part of everyones life right now, I think that security for them is the no. 1 priority.
I'm using SafeinCloud app. There is no any problem with that.
bitwarden. Same as LastPass but open source.
I use keepass, it's open source and you can keep it local or use cloud storage like Google drive. There's a decent app in the play store and app for Windows.

Samsung pass and Samsung pay should be enough. I won't go for logmein or last pass as they have had security issues in 2017!
Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk
Lastpass for sure. Been using them forever...
They, like keepass, and a few others had potential security issues which were not found to ever be explored. The issues were fixed months before public release, so no harm no foul...
Judging a software by having potential security issues alone is a garbage policy, BTW....

Well I don't think it's a rubbish policy to judge commercial software's on security issues. Especially if you are planning to hand over your banking details! Plus the ones i have mentioned are proprietary so others can't even audit it unlike open-source applications. I will be wary of using them.

Samsung pay is closed source
Samsung pay gets security updates
Samsung pay has not been released to be verified
What's the difference....
1password. The large internet company I work for trusts it's passwords to it. They were exposed by cloudbleed and did not get compromised becsuse they had the foresight to not trust ssl.
I use VeraCrypt on my desktop. Creates an encrypted partition and I have an Excel file with my passwords. I just remote in to open the file if I need a pwd when I'm not at home.
I believe their are mobile apps using their API: https://www.veracrypt.fr/en/Android & iOS Support.html
Thanks for all the suggestions guys, will check them all out
Ok, first off, I DID do a search for this, and did not find any pertinent information, so please don't jump my case about using search.
I have often wondered why so many apps get so many updates from the Play Store, some getting updates 3 or 4 times in one week! Is there really that much behind the scenes development going on? Are they just changing the ads or something? Is Play Store updates broken so you get the same update multiple times? It does not seem to be just the free apps though. I have a number of paid apps that do the same thing. If any of you devs could shed some light on this, I would appreciate it. It bothers me when I see an app getting so many updates so quickly, as I wonder what is going on with it that requires those constant changes.

In short, one of the reason are manufacturers, apps have sometimes problems and bugs with specific phones, for example App 1 works good on Xiaomi, but has bugs on Samsung, developer fix some problem for Samsung but breaks something on HTC phones, and so on, it's sometimes endless loop. And sometimes the same app can be working excellent on Samsung A, but buggy on Samsung B, or App FC when you have some other app installed, but works good if you don't have that other app for example.
Second is that there is 0 app that hasn't got some kind of bug.
Thanks Nitro. As a retired software engineer it just disturbed me that the apps seemed to be so unstable. I guess it makes sense though as they do run on a large number of different devices, with a large number of different iterations of the base software. I also would think that with the shear number of devices out there, actual testing on the various devices would be pretty hard unless you were a rich man. That is where the guidelines from Google come in I guess. You write to the guidelines and hope the manufacturers didn't mess with that portion of the base Android system. Heck of a way to make a living.
In any event, thanks again for the reply, and thanks to the devs that try to make usable apps in a chaotic system! :good:
