[Q] Nexus 4 on t-mobile question - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I'm currently a sprint customer with an expired contract and I'm thinking to switch to T-mobile to get the nexus 4 @ $199 with a Classic Unlimited - Unlimited Nationwide 4G Family plan. I have read in other threads that there is a $15 or $20 monthly fee, in my case $30 or $40 since I'm getting two. I don't understand whats is that fee for. Can any of you T-mo customer can explain me what is this fee all about and if that fee is applicable on any T-mo contract?
Happy Holly-days to every one and thanks!!!!
Sorry for ask a t-mo question here , but they don't have any chat on their web page or at least not today. and sorry for my bad English, is not my first language.

The fee is only for the value plan. The value plan offers a lower price for people to use their own unlocked phones. For example, unlimited talk, text and 4g data is $70 on the value plan with an unlocked phone. If you buy a nexus 4 from T-Mobile on the value plan, you will pay another $20 per month for 15 months. $200 + $300 in monthly fees is $500. Or you can buy the same phone from Google for $350.
Another advantage of buying from Google is that you are not locked into a contract and can get the $30 prepaid T-Mobile plan.

thank you Jason, I finally talk with a t-mobile representative on their chat en they told me the same info. I'm really thinking to get tight wit the unlimited contract cuz I really need it. All my family and my wofe family live over seas so we talk and text a lot with them, that's the only reason I'm with sprint(unlimited). So I didn't know t-mobile start with all unlimited till now, that's the only reason I'm moving and the nexus 4 is another reason. But thank you again for all the info.

Tmo family plan with 2 unlocked phones VS. Tmo family with 2 subsidized phones

For people interested in the tmo family plans, here is some math.
Getting 2 subsidized phones over a two-year period breaks down to an extra $15 a month ([$180 x2]/24). 2 unlocked phones is $44 a month ([$530 x2]/24).
Looking at text and web family plans with no annual contracts, its $109.99 for 750mins, $119.99 for 1500mins and $139.99 for unlimited. This gives you freedom of picking your plans or switching to another carrier that supports this phone.
Knowing that if you get the subsidized version, you will be paying $160 a month plus the breakdown of $15 a month (spreading out what you pay up front for the devices) it comes to $175 a month.
With the unlocked device price breakdown at $44 a month, you can see you will save money if you buy the unlocked phone and use either the 750min or 1500min family plans as they will cost you $154 and $164 respectively.
This is a two year savings of $504 and $264!
Even if you get the unlimited plan you're only spending $216 with freedom of changing carriers and plans.
You do save the cash if you buy the phone out-right..
Even more cashola if you can get a discount put on your plan!'
I still got about 9 months left w/ ATT, so i'm gonna sell my fuze to offset the ETF...
What kind of discounts are you referring to?

If you work for a company, tmo usually has a 5-15% discount plan on your service.

Or even if you're a student and your school is eligible for a discount. I get 15% at mine.

Total price for t-mobile plan

Hey, this is my first post here. I have been very interested in the Nexus One ever since a few images were leaked a few weeks ago. Anyway, I'm a student and I would like to buy an unlocked Nexus so I can use the $60 unsubsidized plan. (500 minutes, unlimited text and web.) So we have att, and my dad was saying that there are also taxes and surcharges to the plan, which raises it by $10-$20. If that is true, can someone tell me what the total amount of money you pay for t-mobile with what plan? Because I really can't afford paying that much money a month. Alternatively, is there a cheaper plan that I do not know of? Is it possible to get a data only plan with a prepaid t-mobile sim? Thanks a bunch

If you call T-mo, they can tell you exactly how much it would cost per month with taxes and fees. That won't account for any overages though.

Egzthunder1's "TMOUSA" Method for Saving Money on HD2

For my 3000 post, I figured I would do something special for those of us fresh into TMOUSA's crappy 2 year contract (and for those thinking about it).
We all drooled and drooled consistently until TMOUSA came out with the HD2. There is a catch though, it is through TMOUSA. Many people have reported crappy service (cell-wise) and flat spots for data coverage (3G areas turning into Edge, turning into GPRS, into no-data). On top of that paying $450 for a device is not exactly appealing either ($199 sounds like a much better deal after all). I have been thinking about it long and hard and I came up with the perfect mathematical solution for getting a cheaper HD2, sticking to TMOUSA cheaper plans (or leave TMOUSA altogether), and not paying for such crappy data plan/coverage. If you are like me, you are surrounded by an accessible Wifi signal about 70-80% of your waking day, so being forced to pay $30 per month is borderline stupid.
Edit: My method is only for brand new devices. A lot of you are suggesting cheaper solutions by buying them off eBay or craiglist, which will come with the added risk of device malfunctions or scams. If you feel adventurous enough to go down these paths... by all means. It usually works out better in the end anyways. But this method ensures a brand new device, that you will get on the spot.
Without Further Ado, I give you the "Scr3w You Very Much, TMOUSA" Method...
Getting HD2 without contract from the store:
$450
Cheapest Unlimited voice only plan from TMO: $49.99 (without contract)
Cost over two years: $49.99 * 24 months = $1199.76
Getting HD2 with contract from the store:
$199
Cheapest Unlimited voice + Data (they will force you into this) plan from TMO: $89.99 (2 year contract)
Cost over two years: $89.99 * 24 months = $2159.76
Cost to get out of the contract (option available only after 15 days from establishing a contract - aka remorse period): $200
Difference in phone price (with and without contract difference):
$450 - $199 = $251
Cost of breaking Contract and Keeping New Phone: $199 + $200 = $399
so we are saving $50 right off the bat (remember that the no contract price is $450, so $450 - $399 = $51)
Plan Cost:
$2159.76 - $1199.76 = $960 savings over two years
Total Savings over 2 years ($960 plan cost savings - $200 early cancellation fee + $50 for savings versus purchasing HD2 @ full price)= $810
You may think "but I still need internet" on the road... simple answer to that too:
Internet package from non contract plan = $25
Internet package from contract plan = $30
Savings over 24 months contract = $120
May not seem like much, but when you add that to the $240 from the unlimited voice plan difference (49.99 w/o contract vs $59.99 w contract), it adds to $360 for the life of the contract, plus you can leave them dry at any point you want...

I hope this is useful into deciding if you are getting a HD2 but don't want TMOUSA as your carrier or simply don't feel like paying a lot to them.
Good to know for us tmobile users my friend.. i'll stick it as requested.
But there are those of us who actually need more than the basic services.
My business requires me to have unlimited minutes, texts, and e-mail access at all times.
So, over all, T-Mobile is cheaper than At&T or Verizon.
But I do see your point.
$30 a month for 3G internet service does seem a bit too much, when I pay the same amount for 4G (Clear Wireless) at home.
I would much rather opt out of TMOUS 2 year contract and jump ship to AT&T/Verizon/Sprint...
TMOUS has the absolute WORST service...
I guess you forgot the %35 Bing cash back when you shop online and pay full price! $300 with no contract is the best deal

Depends on where you are...they work quite fine in many major areas.
This does make sense. But then again it doesnt. Think about it!
Tmobile sells it on a 2 year contract for $199.
Walmart sells the samething (online) for $99 plus theres many coupons foe $25 off. So thats $75 on a new 2 year contract. Walmart also pays taxes.
Thats $75 vs. $450+ tax.
Now let me get to the point. If you want data+text+500 minutes. Its 59.99 on even more plus. Vs. $79.99 on contract.
So thats $20 more a month.
Heres the catch. If you cancel your contract after 6 months. The fee goes from $200 to $100 per line.
So lets add this up.
Buy the phone for $75. Add ($20 extra a month for 6 months= $120). And then add another $100 for the contract cancellation. Thats a total of $295.
So $295 vs. $450+ tax. Which sounds like a better deal?
After you cancel the contract. Just sign up for even more plus..
As an alternative (I did that personally), buy one get one free from T-Mobile promotion ... and pay $200 + tax for TWO HD2 phones. Activation waived.
So you pay $214 (in FL) for 2 phones.
Then you pay for 2 weeks of cheapest service (around $70) and cancellation fees of $400 for 2 phones
Total loss: $684
And you eBay your 2nd HD2 for $500 (around 450 after all fees)
You get your new shiny HD2 for $234 and you did not even extended your contract yet
Don't Forget HTC has extended the turn in a old phone and get 50.00 on top of that with teh purchase of a HD2, G1, etc... I think till May 19th

Wow! I had no idea Walmart sold these... I bought mine at Best Buy (had a $70 coupon from Rewards)
I was looking at this option and it is done through "Let's Talk"... and they do have their own set of rules (apart from TMOUSA)
$200 LetsTalk instant discount
Purchase select T-Mobile phones online or through our customer service department and receive a $200.00 instant discount when you activate new T-Mobile service on a plan of $59.99 per month or higher and in conjunction with any feature or bundle or any other plan option at least $30.00 per month or greater. This exclusive offer is limited to select online retailers and is not available in any stores. Certain rate plans may not apply. This promotion applies only to individual plans or line 1 to line 2 of a family plan and requires a (2) two-year service agreement.
Offer Qualifications and Restrictions:
Cancellation of this purchase option within the first 61 days of activation will result in a $100 penalty charge.
Customers who add a qualifying feature after their service has been activated by LetsTalk.com are NOT eligible unless the feature is activated by LetsTalk.com directly.
If the customer receives their phone and the qualifying data feature is not active, the customer must contact LetsTalk.com directly to have the feature added in order to avoid a chargeback.
If the customer receives their phone and wishes to add the qualifying feature to take advantage of the offer, the customer must contact LetsTalk.com's Customer Service center and LetsTalk.com must add the qualifying feature through their activation system.
Customers who contact T-Mobile directly to have the qualifying feature added to their accounts post activation will not be eligible for this offer.
The customer may not change the feature activated by LetsTalk.com through T-Mobile's website, call center retail stores or any other T-Mobile agents or representatives and must maintain the same qualifying feature selected at the time of purchase for 61 days in order to avoid a deactivation chargeback.
If the customer wishes to change to a different qualifying feature they must contact LetsTalk.com directly and LetsTalk.com must change the data feature directly otherwise the customer may be liable for a chargeback.
LetsTalk.com imposes this chargeback solely to recoup plan feature commissions deducted by T-Mobile.

But you are absolutely correct about everything you are saying... There will be various methods for doing this (which result in different savings) based on personal usage of the features of the plan. In my case, (as I explained in the first post) I don't really need internet 24/7 on my device since most of my waking time, I am in areas where wireless is available, so for me this translates into at least saving $30 per month (without accounting the fact that the unlimited voice is $10 cheaper as well), and here is the thing why I posted this. Remember that having internet when you are in a contract is not an option, it is a requirement... there is no way out of it unless you break your contract or pay full price for the phone. I figured this way to be cheaper for my usage type.
Maybe I will change the title of this thread to "Ways of Getting a Cheaper Device and No Contract" or something like that. I appreciate your input on this

Not bad, but why would someone pay $500 for a device on eBay (assuming shipping is included), when they can buy it brand new, from the store, no contract needed for $450?

I just checked it out and in order to do this, you have to have proof of purchase (receipt or UPC box label). I have a 7 year old Wallaby bought in eBay, a 5 year old Blue Angel, 2 0.5 year old Vogues (soon to be 4), soon to have a Tytn, and a Wizard (which I sold, but for the sake of argument, I will throw it in as well).... I cannot use any of these devices for that since I have no way of providing them with proof of purchase (and this happens to be the case for a lot of htc device owners around here).
It is a good resource to have though. Thanks for sharing.
Just spoke to LetsTalk customer support. aka Walmart $99 purchase.
They'll give you the phone for $99 but if you break the contract within 6 months, you'll have to pay $250 disconnect fee to LetsTalk in addition to the $200 charged by T-Mobile.
I went to a Sams Club last week and they had it for $142 + tax. The guy there said I can keep my existing plan (family plan and $25 android data plan).
So my plan is to buy the phone from Sams Club. If I like it, I'll stay on the new 2 yr contract and if I don't I'll break the contract after 30 days and sell it on craigslist (ebay charges a lot of fees).
I've been waiting for a good android phone for a long time (my contract on the G1 got over more than a year ago. But since T-Mobile is not getting any good androind phones, I'll try WM 6.5. Microsoft wins and Google loses. The last WM device I used was an MPX200. I would have bought the Nexus One if they allowed me to add it to my family plan with a discounted rate.
before u go getting phones at contract discount and canceling. you may want to read this http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1634784
basically says tmobile will start blcking IMEI's of phones from canceled contracts. I dont know if its legit but i just bought a HD2 from ebay and now im paranoid anyone heard of this?
Edit seller assured me thats not the case for me but still thats kinda scary.

This is true!
But if you plan on keeping the phone for atleast 181 days, then lets talk will remove the fee (plus tmobile will only charge $100 per line). This would be the best decision for someone looking to keep the phone and not sell it anytime soon.

I spoke to T-Mobile too. Their policy for canceling 2 years contract is:
If you have more than 180 days from the end of the contract, you pay $200.
If you have more than 90 days but less than 180 before contract ends, its $50, and less than 90 days for contract to end, you pay $25.
But yes, I agree that someone who plans on keeping the phone for 2 years, its a good deal.

It's not cheaper automatically, as far as I know, if you're on a current contract rate and don't ask for the change...

No, it would be cheaper.
If you're not currently a T-Mobile customer, and you buy the phone contract free and at an unsubsidized price, you can ask for the Even More Plus plan, and you will get a rate that is $20 per month cheaper than people who buy the phone for $199 with a two year contract pay per month.
The Even More Plus plan is not available online any more, you have to go into a T-Mo store and ask for it specifically... I'm not sure Best Buy can/will offer it to you.
What I did with my Nexus One was go into a T-Mo store and buy the sim card before my phone even came in, then just plugged the sim into the phone when it was delivered.
I pay $59.99/mo for 500 talk minutes, unlimited text and unlimited web AND I'm not tied to any contract (well other than the monthly contract). You still get free nights and weekends and all that good stuff.
No reason to not buy the phone at full price and unsubsidized, unless you don't want to fork over $580 all at once. In the long run it's a better deal.

Nice so the data only sim will be like thirty a month, On sprint I use about 60 minutes a month(data is another issue) and with gizmo5 and gv is going to be how I make my few random cell phone calls
distortedloop is correct; T-Mobile's pricing is such that plans are marginally less expensive if you are not on contract.

Just so you know, ALL Nexus S's are sold unlocked. The word you're looking for is "unsubsidized", or full price.
People have been saying that Even More Plus (no contract) plans are $20/month cheaper than Even More (contract) plans. This is only partially true. The Phone+Text+Data plans are $20/month cheaper. Phone+Text (no data) plans, and data only plans, are $10/month cheaper.
The general Even More Plus plans are not available online (with the exception of the data only plan which I linked above). You'd need to go to a T-Mobile store (or call customer service) to get the general EM+ plan.

+1, yes you will save in the long run
I was in a loyalty unlimited plan ($84.99) for 2 years with my G1. Wanted to save more in the long run so I opted for the "non-contract" Even More Plus Plan ($59.99). I had to call Customer Care to be able to change my loyalty unlimited plan. So in 2 years similar to signing a 2 year cotnract, I save $250.
Like others suggested, buy the sim card for the Even More "Plus" plan for $59.99
and just buy the phone outright.
Even More Plus is really only beneficial for single lines. If you have more than one, it's not worth it.

Why's that? The cheapest Talk+Text+UnlWeb family plan is $30/month cheaper on EM+ than on EM. And the savings increast with the higher-minute plans.
where are you guys seeing EMP plans? i thought t-mobile got rid of them, i certainly can't find it on their site.
I'm still in contract with my G1 plan. $79.99 with unlimited talk/text/data.

Two phones: $10
Total: $130.00
That's only $10 a month cheaper for EMP. When I have to start paying the other two lines, it'll be $20 a month cheaper...which is the general consensus that EMP saves ($20/month).
$20 a month for 22 months = $440.
Now go to upgrade your phones. I need two smart phones and two regular phones.
Even more: Free (2 Vibrants, 2 Gravity T)
Even more plus: 2 Vibrants at retail ($400? each) and 2 Gravity T at retail ($175? each) = $1150 (this may be a high estimate) - $440 (savings) = $710
The difference I save each month on EMP does not offset the price I have to pay to buy phones outright.

I must be missing something. On T-Mobile's website, the EM1500 plan with unlimited txt + data is $160/month. Is your plan maybe part of some special? Or do you have 4 of the $10/month (200MB cap) data plans?
From your description, it's tough to tell whether you have 4 lines or 2 (since you say "once I have to start paying for 2 lines").
I realize we're kinda sidetracking the main thread here ... I'm just curious about your plan for some reason.

What is your current plan on Tmobile?

Just curious about what plan you guys are on. I currently have the $54.99 unlimited talk text and web for 2 years. For me it's the cheapest i have ever been with tmobile. Hope to see other cheaper plans.

Value Plan 2 lines unlimited tàlk + text + data (2G each before throttling to Edge) for $100/mo. Great deal!

T-Mobile has been screwing my wife and I over. We dropped a $10 month 3rd line 4 times already and it keeps being added back on. We were put on a Value Plan 7 months ago where we were paying $15 a month per line for Unlimited data and now all of a sudden its $30 a month per line.....plus they added $7.99 a month insurance to both of our phones that I never authorized.
They told us about the new "Value Plan" With unlimited talk+text+and data for $110 a month for 2 lines is what they told us.....but in order to do this we have to pay a $200 per line "Migration Fee" to the new plan which is the same price as cancelling our contract. I've been with T-Mo for 8 years and they do this? **** you T-Mobile.
I have an unlimited family plan for voice, text, and data and its about $50 per line for 4 lines.
I'm paying just over $100 a month for two lines for my wife and I. This is after a 15% discount as a government employee. We have unlimited texting, 200MB data each, and 1000 shared minutes. It seems we could be getting more for our money. I've called and asked about changing plans and they always tell me it would cause my contract to end which would mean we would then have to pay retail for our phones (MyTouch 4G and MT4G Slide). So far I'm not too pleased with the deal since they assured me during signup that my total monthly would be closer to $80 after taxes, fees, and the 15% discount. Any ideas?

Youre paying $100+tax for 2 lines right? I think you should be getting unlimited talk text and web for that price. Ask about their "customer care plan". Thats how i got my 54.99. They dont advertised it.
As for my situation, i wanted to get the sgs2 for $199. They told me in order to get that phone at a discounted price, i would have to get the $79.99 plan unlimited talk text and web(2gb highspeed). And if im getting the 54.99 plan, i would pay the whole price of 529.99. $230 down pmt and $15 charge every month until i paid off the balance. I did some math and i decided to get 54.99 plan and just get the phone when im ready instead of paying $80 a month. You think i chose correctly? The phone can wait, i just want to get a cheaper plan.

That's basically the same **** they did to us. They kept adding on random crap that we didn't want.
Told them to **** off, paid the ETF's and went to AT&T. Can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm more satisfied with AT&T then T-Mobile, and I hope they get bought out.
Classic 1000 (4 voice lines) two are mine
Unlimited Messages
Android Preferred data on the first two lines (5GB @ 20$) (one is mine)
10GB, WiFi calling on the third (mine)
No data (dumbphone for mom) on the fourth
Family Allowances
Slacker Premium
EM MBB 10GB Overage Free Sonic Hotspot (5th line but no Voice, so I can still add a fifth voice line if I choose)
Total $270 a month....

Uhh...actually they throttle you to zero
It just shuts off after 30mb, and you'd have to spend more or renew the plan early for more. Which kinda sucks, but I hardly use it - the first couple months (with my old hacked iPhone) I didn't even reach the limit.
Oh, and rough estimate, T-mobile EDGE is about 130 Kbps download/80 upload, that's what I've seen. Sorta like ISDN speeds.

1. There is no $15 data SOC for Value Plans. It's $10 for 2GB, $25 for 5GB and $55 for 10GB.
2. The insurance roots back to where you got the phone from. I advise going to them.
3. You say you're on the Value plan and you're still complaing about the Value plan having a migration fee. It's basically the discount on a phone. Value you get a discounted plant. Classic you get a discounted phone. You can't have both. So the "migration" is basically asking for the discount back. You can't double dip.
I think you're being misinformed and there is some miscommunication along the way. They do give you a break down of the bill when you renew any type of contract. You should have saved it. Could use that to argue the charges.

Wrong buddy. I paid cash out right for both of out MT4Gs, but good try. We switched to a lower plan 4 months after buying the phones out right with no new 2 year contract. We tried to switch to the value plan but they want 200 per phone to do it. I'm not currently on the value plan.
