I posted this in the Q &A forums, but no answers were gained. Maybe there's more visibility here.
Will the N10 by able to get and install OTA updates from Google if we're running the stock ROM/firmware with a custom recovery (CWM) ?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
OTA updates require the stock recovery. However, it's usually only hours after an OTA is out that a dev will repackage the OTA to use with CWM.
Also you could probably get someone to post the actual update URL, and then maybe temp boot stock recovery and then sideload

Huh?
Actually, you could install OTA updates using CWM or TWRP... but the OTA update may overwrite the recovery after a reboot...
And With bootloader unlocked, can i update by ota? Keep root updating by ota?
Now i have root and stock recovery
I flashed via cwm just fine. Root was maintained.

its getting damn annoying. I don't want to update yet until there's a clean way with clockwork or something

can I flash the stock recovery then update to 2.3.1 and reflash clockwork?
or can I just update over clockwork?
all that I've done so far is unlock the bootloader, install clockwork, and root.

as of now my understanding is that the "stock" recovery cannot be flashed over clockwork mod. he is working on a recovery to allow this
Why don't you just accept it? If it fails because of ClockworkMod then you will never see it again.

Clockwork Recovery doesn't affect that. People are spreading misinformation.
It's modified boot.img's that are preventing updating. If you used one of the easy root methods, such as superboot, it replaces the stock boot.img with a modified one... this causes a MD5 mismatch when trying to update.
To fix it, you need to get the stock boot.img, and flash it back before updating. You can update via CWR (I did it myself).
im all updated now so im good thank you for explaining that though

You can get a 2.3.0 boot.img that works with fastboot here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10027638&postcount=1
Can't install 4.2.2 ota and from what I have read its because I have custom recovery? How do I go back to stock recovery or is there a flashable stock 4.2.2 update I can use ?

Use the search option next time please.
[HOW-TO] How to flash a factory image / return to stock / unlock / root #
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
Use fastboot and the recovery image available through a link in that thread to go back to the stock recovery.
Or you could simply flash 4.2.2 through your recovery;

Yes, the custom recovery is what's causing the OTA self installation to fail. You must download the update to your phone, boot into twrp or cwm, and install the update zip.

Using a toolkit is most likely the reason why the OP doesn't know how to flash recovery. Using a toolkit again would continue the cycle...

Hello guys.. This is my first post and i am kinda new to rooting..
I did some research and rooted my nexus 4 using the NRT 1.6.3
I didn't install CWM or TWRP (Kept the flash CWM option unchecked under the ROOT button)
So basically I just have the Root access for the phone. Nothing more (i guess)
So am I still running on Stock Android ????
Moreover when any system updates comes in the future, can i perform the OTA updates or do i have to download it and install it from the recovery mode ???
Some people say that if u didn't install CWM or TWRP (Like i did), u can normally perform the OTA updates without any extra steps
But If u have CWM, then there are chances of bricking the phone..
I am confused. Any help would be appreciated
If you are just rooted and have not flashed any rom, which would not be possible without custom recovery, then you are still running the stock android and all the ota updates will be installed automatically
You have not installed any recovery and not any rom, then root should not be a problem for ota updates, they will come as usual and will be installed

Thanks for the quick reply.
I am almost sure that i have not installed any quick recovery, but if by chance the NRT automatically installed some quick recovery, and i dont flash any ROM, so can i still perform the OTA updates in the future ??
Is there still chance to brick my phone in doing so ???

What about unlocking the bootloader? Does that hinder in process of ota?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Since you have already unchecked the option for custom recovery, NRT wouldd not have installed any recovery.
Rest assured you are not going to brick your device performing ota updates
You can still check if you have any custom recovery installed by pressing power button and volume up and volume down button simuntaneously when phone is switched off
BTW i think that even having a custom recovery installed would not have effect on ota updates but a custom rom will surely be

Alrighty.. I'll try that..
If i have a custom recovery, what should pressing the power and volume keys do during a boot ??
I mean it will take me to the default recovery mode, or to the custom recovery whichever is installed, right ??
Yes, if you have not installed any custom recovery, it would take you to stock recovery and you would be fine
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I know using twrp recovery allows you to still accept ota updates the normal way but im not sure about cwm
okay..
another question.. if i perform any OTA update, will i lose the root ??
Is there any way for performing an OTA update in which i dont lose my root ?

Thats a good link there. Correct me if i'm wrong, but my problem doesn't lie in any of the scenarios mentioned there..
I am stock + rooted 'without' any custom recovery..
is it just me, or there is no scenario mentioned there for such a case ??
You will not brick your device by ota updates
You dont have any custom recovery So there qould be no problem for ota updates they will be updated as usual
You should not lose root access while doing ota updates, and in case it goes away then how much time does it take to gain root access back with NRT?
And all the way google releases updates when everything has been done, so it is just one time update,
AGAIN, you are fine , there qould be no problem for future ota updates
And i think that most probably by the time google releases another version of android, you would be running a custom rom
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
You can be on Stock Rom with No Mods Unlocked Rooted with a Custom Recovery and you will get the ota update and it will install fine.
The ota update link will be posted here before you get on your device so it's good to have a custom recovery so you can just flash it. It will also protect you from losing root and your custom recovery

Thanks a lot guys.. That pretty much answered all my questions
Ok so I have all but the most recent update on my phone and its rooted and I have twrp installed as a custom recovery. From what I understand I can not flash the most recent update because its not a full update it just tweeks some things. So to my question is there anyway to flash the stock recovery so I can get the update.

A coworker with a RAZR HD said he updated I checked his root and it remained as well. Apparently update does not break existing root.

No the 7.1.2 OTA does not work in FF. You can read some of the last comments in this thread, but in the OP there is a working TWRP flashable zip. Yes, you will lose root and kernel if you flash by itself, so just queue up the OTA, SU, and then kernel (if applicable) in TWRP (put them on your phone beforehand) and flash away. This way, when it finishes up you will still have root and kernel.
