Hey there!
First post since making my account close to two years ago
I just recently purchased a Galaxy Tab through Rogers w/o a contract. It was pretty much a impulse buy. After going on here and reading what I could do to the device, I caught glimpse of some threads saying to hold off for the Xoom and some other tablets that are coming out.
I own a iPhone4, Macbook Pro (13") and a Alienware M17x (17").
The thing I love most about the Galaxy Tab is the form factor. I find the size comfortable. Reading about the new tablets with dual core processors and 10" + screens is exciting tho. Currently in Canada the Tab's are not cheap I paid $755 including taxes. I do have 15 days to return the Tab.
Should I return it and wait for something new? or do you think if or when honeycomb is ported over it will still be able to compete with the xoom or some of the newer tablets of 2011.
Thanks! Sorry for the long post, thought I'd make it a good one to break my XDA cherry

prices will drop. return it.
yeah, return it and wait for the next new shiny thing to be released, but then hang on because the next even more shiny and even newer thing will be on the horizon so best wait for that. Oh, don't buy that version because it will be out of date when the next new bit of kit comes along.
Enjoy what you have, so if it's out of date in 18 months sell it then and buy something newer.
I reckon that my 'tech fund' for phones etc costs me about £10 a week - money well spent.
Just for the record, there is no way I'd part with my Tab or my X10
keep it, it's always best to buy "newer" units after 6 months since its release. (better prices, no more bugs, updated firmwares etc)
dont even think twice take it back i just got 2 of them 3 days ago and find it to get boring seeing that it does not work as good as it should esp iu had 750 in 2 and decided to f it there will be the tab 2 in june plus the moto xoom

$755??? WTF!!! Return it, drive across the border and buy one for $300
Yeah- at that price I'd take it back and scout around for a cheaper one. If you don't find it in a month or so then wait for the next version.
You can always argue that the next one will be better, but with an upgrade cycle now for most phone-tablets-electronic devices of about 6 months you have to draw the line somewhere and get something. Otherwise you will be like the couple that keeps putting off having a child until they can afford it, or have the time for it. It never happens!
Or, if you wait to long to make up your mind and the return period runs out you can always send it to me. I could use a nice gift right about now
I agree, got mine at Tmo about 3 weeks ago for $350.00 on contract; went back to the store tdy and got $. 50 back on my ccard and $ 50 mail back rebate: = $ 250.00 total cost I figured will use it for 6 to 9 months and by then the prices of the new models will be way better than at launching...
I bought one today for $533 new from Best Buy. I didn't sign up for a plan cause I have free hotspot on my EVO, so it doesn't make sense to pay Sprint $30 a month for what I have free. I've connected it to my Evo and it works great....BUT I am wondering if I should have waited on the tab 2 or spend a little more and get the Xoom.
Hey guys and gals. The money wasnt a huge issue with buying the tab. The main thing was if i should wait a month for something better. Looking on ebay i see that you guys are dead on about the prices. Which carriers are compatible with my rogers 3G?

I went to T-mobile and did a hands-on. The reviews from phone reviewers didn't quite answer my questions as a vibrant user. So I hope this helps. Plus I don't own it so I won't be justifying buyers remorse.
Bottom Line: Not worth the upgrade from a Vibrant. Especially off-contract. If you are locked into T-mobile and are upgrading anyway, it is worth it. All others should wait to see what the deal with the new Nexus phone is. You will NOT be upset with your purchase regardless though.
Screen: Huge and beautiful. Since it's not pentile, but it is larger than the Vibrant, it looks very similar. The GS2 might be SLIGHTLY less pixelated, but its not the crisp sharpness that I was hoping for.
Build Quality: What the Vibrant should've been. It's the best looking GS2 and it feels very solid. The gunmetal band is plastic as far as I can tell. It feels more solid than the Vibrant, but not nearly as much as an HTC phone. this should not be an issue whatsoever. And boy is it pretty.
Data: I live in a 42Mbps area and i speedtested about 4Mbps. The T-mobile rep said they got 8 yesterday. My vibrant got 2.6. YMMV obviously.
Speed: Quick, but with a live wallpaper and as low as 3 widgets, it started to drop in framerate. However it did NOT lag. things still load and run quickly, but not necessarily at an ideal framerate. especially the homescreen. I benched a 3200 quadrant after a memory clear. it wasn't loaded with smartbench unfortunately.
GPS: Didn't get a lock indoors of a mall (top story). 1400 meters was the closest. But I didn't get to test it outside. Grr.
Didn't get to test: Game performance, Codec Support, Sound Quality or Loudness, Camera, Camcorder, FFC.
I got my SGSII today and love it so far. The screen is beautiful, the gps worked out of the box and its fast as hell.
We'll see how I feel in a few days......
Now we just need some custom rom love
Edit: i get 13mbit/2mbit at work in minneapolis on 4G

everything works perfectly!
im gonna have to say im loving it too!
Guys if you have both vibrant and the new SG2, please check and reply if the batteries are interchangable.
i dont think the batteries are...this one has 4 gold pins and apparently NFC built into the battery (?)...plus it looks taller.
Since I loved the Vibrant, I'm sure I'll love this phone and it's extraordinarily enticing. But to those who signed a contract with the Vibrant, 2 years isn't up yet and they would have to pay full for the phone. I didn't sign one and I paid-in-full for my Vibrant and to get the GS2, I would have to spend $530. For that, I could buy a PS3 AND Xbox 360, or a fairly nice HDTV or desktop computer, for what I consider an incremental upgrade for a phone.
It's not that I think the phone isn't worth it, its just not worth it as an upgrade from the Vibrant.
i managed to drop my vibrant in the washing machine and am looking to get a new phone starting a new 2 year contract. they didn't have the sgs2 in the store i was at today unfortunately, but i did get to mess around with the htc amaze. it seemed to be pretty dope from what i could tell from messing with it for like 5 minutes, would you guys pick the sgs 2 over the amaze? i'm a little hesitant to buy another samsung product based on the way they handled the whole gps issue on the vibrant, so i'm kind stuck here. it's either one of those or wait until they announce more details on the nexus prime... but i dont even know if that phone will come to tmobile :/

luckily there are no known issues with the SGS2 like there were for the Vibrant. Even in early reviews, the Vibrant was criticized for lag and bad GPS. It isn't the case with the SGS2, so you are good to go on that front.
As for the Nexus. It may not directly be associated with T-Mobile. However, at this point according to rumors, there should be a GSM version and it should support T-Mobile's 3G band. So the likely scenario is that you would buy the phone unlocked and then get your T-mobile account.
The issue with that is a full price phone and a full price plan. I urge everyone who wants to use T-mobile to take advantage of their off-contract pricing. That math has been done on this dozens of times, but if you buy a phone at full price and join one of their off contract plans, in two years, you will have saved hundreds of dollars. You even have the option to spread the fincancing of a [T-mobile] phone over the months. I'm sure with the nexus that you can finance with the retailer you purchased it from as well.

I just asked and checked a couple weeks ago, the previously called "loyalty program", which lets you split the hardware payment over 20 installments, is no longer available to non-contract-binding customers. Basically if you are not on contract ATM and want to utilize that financing option, you have to sign a new 2-year contract. Sux, right?

i can confirm this as well...
Hi, i'm an Atrix owner, and my dad's phone just died, so i thought that i could buy a new phone for me and give my atrix to him. It will have more than he can use anyway.
So, i'm trying to go with the best for under $300 (unlocked). I suffered the Motorola's lack of updates with my Milestone and this Atrix, so i want a futureproof device (balanced with the price). So my first thought of course is the Nexus. If it gets 5.0 i'll be happy for another year i guess.
But i don't know what's in the market right now, so maybe i'm missing another good device for the price, or maybe the Nexus 4 is not as good as it looks. So that's why i'm asking what the title says.
Would you still buy the Nexus 4?
Thank you.

I gave my old lady my old Atrix and grabbed the Nexus.
Now I'm trying to talk her in to getting one.
The price now @ $249 to performance ratio can't be beat considering you own the phone out right, no contract crap.
Get updates on day 1 release, it will get 5.0
The camera is decent enough I find...after all it's a phone.
If you don't care about the lack of a SD card and a non removable battery. Then it's def worth it
After the Atrix you'd be very happy with it.
I'd get a case for it the as it's an extremely slippery phone though.
If you're on a budget and looking for unlocked and properly priced, then yes, it's perfect. You don't get 4G LTE out of the box, and you only get it with fixes and always changing the settings back. If not having 4G LTE is fine, then yes, it's your best bet. MetroPCS and Boost are selling the SIII for $400 still. You still get a year warranty of course when you buy it from Google.
Only if I didn't already own one. Why?
1. Price/performance ratio is insane
2. Dev support is lively
3. LTE on Tmobile
4. No contract
5. Storage fits my music collection
6. Dat back
so seems buying n4 still worth it if you just want to use it for a decent purpose only, am I right ? I'm not a type of person who loves to rooted or change kernel to phone.
I did 3 days ago and its flying
I got mine the other day. Coming from a GS3, I am more then happy with the N4. Will I get an N5 when it comes up, most likely but depending on the price maybe not as soon as it is released.
My wife picked up a HTC One. Spec wise and quality build that is on the HTC One is top of the line right now but I would not take one over the N4. There is just something special about a Nexus device and it runs fantastic.
Looking at this thread i am going to say a big YES http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/nex...y-google-play-store-1642317?page=104#comments
Yep. Just bought another N4 (to replace a stolen N4) and it has been a good idea
Its the best. No doubt about it. Just go for it. I'd buy it again if I have to. Best performance with such specs at this price. Just brilliant.
I did. Am selling my Xperia Z for profit, and got an Nexus 4 for £159. Much prefer the look, feel and performance over the Sony. Love it.
For some stupid reason, it still costs Rs. 24,990 ($ 379) in india (flipkart.com). Were it not for this silly pricing, i would have bought it a long time back.

Yes, I would for sure.

I would but just because of the value. For $200-$300 you get a great unlocked phone. It isn't the best phone but it definitely is for the price range. It definitely does have it quirks though. For one I hate the fact that I am limited to 16gb of storage as there is no SD Card slot. Google however has great cloud based apps so you really don't need 64gb. For me, I have 30+ GB of music and its all on the cloud with Google play. Even when your offline you still have access you your music though because the app very conveniently caches songs periodically to keep some stored locally (I have about 2gb local). The screen is not full 1080p which is becoming the norm now and not to forget the phone has horrible color calibration, which can be fixes with a custom kernel. The phones battery life also isn't the greatest... As a pretty heavy user I probably would have to charge it at least once throughout the day. The camera also is pretty crappy and so is the speaker.
Bottom line. The phone is definitely worth every cent but it does have its issue. There are plenty of phones better than it but they're all $600+ phones. So yes even today, I would say to Stoll get it for the value
I definently would,
given there has just been a price drop of 100$ on both versions!
Now there is really no way to beat the price.
Take the 8 gb version for example and look at other models in the same price range.
You see things like the Samsung Young, which really are no match at all for the Nexus 4!
Try and name 1 device for under 400$ that is better, I think you will have a hard time.
And now the Nexus is only half of that!
I just ordered mine last week when the price dropped. I have been using the Galaxy Nexus for the last year and will likely never purchase another non-Nexus device ever again.
For me, it was all about value. As others have mentioned - it is pretty hard to beat the current 199/249 price point that these are available at right now. I had originally planned on holding off until the N5 was released but simply couldn't pass up this deal.
Now just anxiously waiting for it to arrive!
I just did - a few days ago. I was never happier. :cyclops:

Hi all, just letting people know of the deal over at currys/pc world where you can get the tablet for £399 and get a cash back of £50 after 21 days.
http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/ipad-tablets-and-ereaders/tablets/samsung-sm-p600-galaxy-note-3-10-1-wifi-tablet-16-gb-21795604-pdt.html
I was on the fence with this, but this priced pushed me over the edge and ended up upgrading my 2012 model this morning. If anyone has put up with the lag on the last model, they will absolutely love this model. There's a night and day difference in speed and this is before I've updated it.
I'm just trying to hold out from rooting it until custom roms come about as I can guarantee this'll be the best tablet on the market without a doubt once it's been slimmed down and optimised. Extremely happy with the purchase, even more so for that price.
Now back to playing PVZ2 in hi-res. Beautiful!
The £50 cash back only appears to apply to the white model.

Web site says £399 is price after the cash back.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
If the tablet is £300+ you get £50.
I can't link it but click on Full Terms Apply it'll show you.
The Official price is still £450 but with the cash back deal they allow you to buy it at £400.
BUT they do say that any purchase over £300 gives you cash back of £50, so I do hope you can claim the £50 because I think they have made a hash of things on their site, just like their description haha.
Anyways hopefully it works out coz that would be a canny deal.
You would be stupid to not buy this amazing tab this cheap.
You need to reread the website, £399 is the price AFTER the £50 cashback has been taken off.
So its 449, minus the £50, which is £399, which is the price they show.
EDIT Oh I see now, it looks like they've messed it up with a misprice? They sell it for £399 cash... hopefully the cashback will still apply

I would try it you have nothing to lose, Might be an interesting legal argument on the wording especially as to the "advertised price".
"Discount" or "cashback" 2 different sales definitions.
Go for it.
John Lewis is cheaper at £399 ... and they have the choice of the black and white models of the sm-p600
Just so the UK bros know - im working on a ROM, so dont worry about feeling left out or anything, we will definitly have some good stuff coming soon.
Definitely £399 - £50 = £349 after cash back
Just to clarify. They know it's not a mispriced as that's how it's being advertised in store as £349 (after cash back). Trust me I paid £399 for and received a coupon to claim the cash back after 21 days (the same length of time they no longer refund you if it becomes faulty) and before 60 days (picture taken with the Note 2014 in low light).
@punkmilitia I know right. I wondering if it'd be considered stupid to NOT buy one for my wife also even though I know she wouldn't half use it Thanks for not forgetting us tea drinkers as I'm dying for a rom. I have to ask when do you reckon will see these pouring through.

agreed that currys/pc world's web pages are confusing for this. the page for the white model says that £399 is after discount, the page for the black model doesn't say that. I think what they mean by price after discount is that it use to be £449 in store, but later dropped it to £399 to match John Lewis and avoid having to pay the 10% difference they offer. The £50 cash back is only received after applying for it 21 days later.
I first thought it was for the older model too, but this is definitely a 2014 edition in front of me lol.
Here's the correct link to their entire tablet range, you can filter it by samsung on the left.

I suspect someone may have got wind of this and bought them all for ebay as these are bound to go back up to £450 and even still sell for that now over there. Who knows they may get some stock back in before the end of the year.

@punkmilitia I know right. I wondering if it'd be considered stupid to NOT buy one for my wife also even though I know she wouldn't half use it Thanks for not forgetting us tea drinkers as I'm dying for a rom. I have to ask when do you reckon will see these pouring through.
Thanks!

Personally - im aiming to release a rom when kitkat arrives. It includes tons of features and saves a lot of battery. I get 15 hours a day use now and it was about 11 hours vanilla. I might release it earlier though depending on demand.

KitKat! :crying: It took us ages to get jelly bean on the original note and I'm sure their flagship S4 just got 4.3 throwing us even further down the list. Of course beggars can never be choosers, however I wasn't going to get this tablet due to the lack of custom roms being available and I'm sure there are many who haven't for this reason.
As you know, Samsung make great devices, but clearly don't care when it comes to optimisation (it's spelt (omg it's correcting that too) with an s not a z stop correcting me!) and instead just keep adding more junk leaving them less stable. As much as I love my note right now, I won't be setting it up 100% as I know I'll be doing it all again the moment a sexy rom becomes available.
Conclusion: everyone start begging.
I'm sure I'm not the only one but when it's time for a new device the money in my pocket starts burning and I get more and more impatient with every new review/forum post I read. I have always went with the latest and greatest but am considering saving a little money this time and go with a tried and true instead. Was looking hard at the S7 Edge but man, they proud of that joker.
Would like to get back to tinkering as well and since we are on Verizon, the options are a bit limited if you enjoy that.
With the Pixels on the way, do you guys expect a sale on the 6p? Is that a normal thing with a new release? They are currently at $460 and $550 at Best Buy.
Thanks!
Ofcourse there will be a sale on the 6P - Wait and See.
But on another couple of notes. 6P did not distinguish itself other than a 5.7 inch device. I do not see the Pixel as a direct competition as that will be a 5.5 device.
On another note - the Note 7's will be coming up fairly soon as refurbished devices after they get their batteries swapped out and may offer better value for money - unless you're into the whole "Pure Nexus" "Direct Upgrades" thing.
Each to his own though - we tend not to keep devices even one year anymore
