Nexus on tmobile signal type. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What signal should my nexus 4 get on the T-Mobile 30$ Walmart plan. All I get is H.

Yep, it should display H when your phone is using data, then move back to 3G when idle.

No h+ or 4g?

Mine says H and it seems just as fast as my maxx was on lte.

Nope. Just an H. No need for marketing in the status bar.

Marketing aside, I liked to see when I was connected to H+ on my SGS2.

This is how it works. All gsm phones to this. Carriers disable the status change and always display "4G" to not confuse the user.

New owner, question about apn and AT&T

I just got a nexus 4, I'm on att and I pulled my sim directly from an iPhone 5, use an adapter.
It works fine and gets data and it will show and H, when I'm on H+, does it show the +?
Or does the H represent H and H+?
Do I new to create a custom apn other than what the phone assigned stock?
Thanks, just want the fastest speeds I can get.
Don't know what APN you're using, so you may be leaving some speed on the table.... But you are correct that the "H" represents all forms of HSPA, including +

Some Roms actually show the plus also and there's also a thread to show you how to make it show the H, H+ or 4G if that's your preference. Sorry for not linking it, kind of a pain to do from the xda app.

Can you help me here...I want right get as much speed as possible. All I'm using is what the phone automatically assigned.
I had an iPhone 5 with lte prior and did nothing to change my plan.
Thanks in advance.

Does this give you the h+ speeds? I'm using it right now but I can't get the h+ network, but I can on the stock APN.

I get pretty good speeds with "phone". I usually get between 3 and 5mbps where I live which is fine for me. What speeds are you getting? I never even looked at the stock setting because I unlocked, rooted and flashed xylon right away. Was stock the WAP.Cingular APN?

It's because of how the iPhone LTE plan you came from is provisioned. It's different than the rest of their LTE plans. Just leave "phone" instead of "pta" and you'll be fine.

Hspa

I had an optimus l9 phone before the n4....
L9 would always be on T-Mobile hspa...now n4 switches between 3g and h+
What's going on?

tmobile hspa is 3g. it should only be using h+ when data is moving in and out.
I know what he means. I was on sprint before, but prior to that tmo. Data would always stay connected as hspa+ I'd get low ping and great speeds. With nexus 4 it'd idle at 3g then switch to hspa+. Which sucks because it'd take good 2-3 seconds to switch and you'd notice the delay, and sometimes it'd drop out of hspa+ back down to 3g while you were using it.
Solution? I haven't found one, I moved to DC and here T-Mobile is way different. K never see my phone on 3g, it idles at hspa, 100% of the time...

DC-HSDPA on three in the UK

In the UK The three network has an "ultrafast" DC-HSDPA network. Anyone who has a Nexus 4 tried this as I will be getting a Nexus 4 tomorrow and giving my I9300 to my Girlfriend. Just wanted to know how big an improvement the data speeds are.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I don't use Three personally but I've seen a friend get speeds of around 20Mbps
Yea the phone can use threes dc-hspa
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I'm meant to be in an ultrafast area, but throughout the day speeds vary (in the exact same spot) from 0.5Mbps to 15Mbps, so yeah, it's great when it gives good speeds.
I get 1-3Mb/s on three in Southampton .......

I usually get between 7-15mbps in hull
Though only half the city has decent reception. Thankfully it's the half that I live in
Other half I only get between 0-1mbps
You can tell your on DC because you will get h+ instead of just h
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Wow sounds rather varied but thanks I live in London and the speeds aren't too bad most of the time.

Just to note, H+ is actually HSPA+, which isn't DC-HSDPA, your phone unfortunately won't tell you when you're using DC-HSDPA.

Yes it is.. On this device 4g = LTE
With T-Mobile H and 3g are the same thing.
H+ is what some call 3.5 G . its faster and almost 4G.
4G depending one your device may represent H+ or LTE .

4G is definitely not LTE.
Just because this device has a "4G" doesn't mean it's on LTE.

Apart from being rom dependent, what you see will also be carrier dependent. On AT&T, when out in the sticks, I may see G for gsm or E for Edge and when in the city, I will see H for 3G, hspa, and hspa+.

G and E are not at&t specific. I get edge in my house.. And GSM on long road trips through crappy service areas. Both represented with a G and E

G is GPRS, and E is EDGE. GPRS is much slower than EDGE (Which I didn't know was possible until I managed to get GPRS for like 1 minute)
I have never seen H+ I get H and its 20-30mbps
R<G<E<3G<H<4G

My bad, I meant G=GPRS, but I wasn't trying to imply those are AT&T specific. I was pointing out that I never see 3G on my phone. It still shows H for 3G service.
