I am extremely annoyed by this "stock google" limitation!!!! - Nexus S General

How on earth can I make a "calls only" profile on my phone? I have tried half a dozen apps and its laughable how such an open phone is unable to achieve what should be a basic feature.
As you would know google merged the notification and ringtone volume as one in ICS which is the most dumb **** move google could have made. Now most of the profile apps on the playstore can do nothing about this.
I tried profile scheduler and it can only handle the sms app notification volume. I tried elixir 2 and even though it says that it can unlink notification and ring volume but it does not work for me. Then I finally found an app that actually managed to do it! But guess what? It has a horrible bug of randomly deactivating my data connection and I have to restart my phone. I really dont know what its doing to cause that.
Now I could just manually set the notification tone to silent but actually that doesnt work either since many apps and services have their own notification tone settings which cannot be overrided by the system setting.
So does ANYONE have a workable solution for me? My phone is rooted but I aint installing a custom rom just for this. Samsung touchwiz phones still have separate volumes guess samsung wasnt as stupid as google.
I dont think I'll be buying a nexus phone next if I cant find a solution to this soon. Really sad such a petty issue has to ruin it.

Hmm you're out of luck if the apps don't cut it for you. If you're rooted then flash a ROM....you are missing out on truly useful features not present on stock. If you're not into flashing on principle, get over it if you don't flash due to uncertainty then read up on it, super simple.
Some top ROMS are Slim Bean, Rascarlo, plus many others.
Good luck

Have you tried this?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=Orion.Soft
Custom roms got you covered though, don't know of any without unlinked volumes.

Why not flash a custom rom, you have a nexus, I don't think it gets any easier to flash a rom on phone. People make these roms and make features that don't and won't exist on a stock rom.

I am using baked black bean 6. It has the option to unlink call and notification volumes. Also it supports profiles. I think it's worth trying a custom ROM when you need additional features.

Yes thats actually the one that worked but had the data connection bug. I have emailed the dev and he has no idea why that would happen.
On the nexus S I will install custom rom if I am unable to find a decent solution. However I dont know if I'll want to buy the nexus 4 knowing that I would need custom rom for basic functionality so I am gonna try to make this work out without custom rom.

I agree this is dumbest thing Google has done in Android recently. On gingerbread, i had always rocked stock rooted, or something close like pete's bugless beast. On a fundamental level they need to change this, but I think that it's probably motivated from their desire to unify the tablet and phone platforms.
I'm on CM10 now, and have been since ics linked the volumes. It irritates me to no end that every month or so, my phone slows to a crawl and i have to do a full wipe and re-flash. Never had to do this on stock gb. But that's a whole different issue.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda app-developers app

yup, android is very flexible in regards to flashing
you truly are missing out on a lot of other features. and you necessarily have to give up a lot of space/speed for it, some roms are dedicated to keeping things as much stock as possible, just because of that, they mostly contain the "stock" rom with exactly those features you want and in other cases you can just go with a rooted/deodexed rom and flash just those mods that you need. in most cases, the latter has almost no effect on performance

Why don't you go flash a custom rom? Sorry but Google has millions of customers and it can't please everyone. There's a very fast way to fix all of this, and that is just simply flashing a custom rom. These roms are very stable and nothing is going to happen. Since you're already rooted why don't you give it a shot and then come back here and complain if it doesn't work?

The different ICS leaks compared; things that does not work, and how to make it work.

Not sure if this belongs in general or in Q&A, but as it's supposed to be more of a discussion thread, I put it in general. If a mod disagrees, I'm sure it can be relocated.
I've tried both this and the Chinese I9220 leak, and none of them are good enough to be daily drivers for me. But they give me something to look forward to as the feel and speed of the GUI is just amazing compared to GB.
To sum up my main gripes about the ROMs:
Chinese I9220 leak:
Unstable bluetooth; Disconnects and will not reconnect without toggling BT off/on on handset side.
Hang; Whole handset just hangs. Need to keep power button pressed > 10 secs to force reboot.
Contacts application performs really bad; Stutters and hangs all over, even FCs at times. New favorites tab is really crap compared to old one. (BIG pictures of your favorites, no "most called" option.
Dialer no longer recognizes my incoming calls from contacts that has country code in their phone#; If someone calls me and I have stored their # in the format +47xxxxxxxx, it will only show up as a number on incoming call. As soon as I edit the contact and remove the +47, it will show up as normal.
Minor annoyance; A lot of preinstalled Chinese apps; these can be easily disabled under the application list in settings. That will make them disappear from your app drawer. Some of the apps tie into TW quite a bit, and I found no way to sort that out, but I am sure you can fix that as well if need be.
Minor annoyance; Color of address bar in stock browser is black on black, which makes it kind of hard to read.
Minor annoyance: Not all languages are present; can use English, but need to hack locales to get correct display of phone # etc.
Minor annoyance; Swiftkey X tablet not woking as it should. Does not show in landscape at all.
N7000 leak:
Showstopper, No sound on calls. Did not bother to play around with it too much after I found this, but also found it to be a bit less stable in general than the I9220 release. Quite a few TW apps FCing, and you needed to flash CSC twice to get a working keyboard.
Minor annoyance; Languages missing. Same deal as with the I9220 version.
Minor annoyance; Problems with graphics in some applications. Some applications like Swiftkey X tablet not working as it should.
So now I am back to stock, on the fence again. Really, really looking forward to a fully working release. The taste I have had here convinces me that the handset really will show its potential a lot better in ICS than what they have managed to do with GB.
If anyone has found solutions to the problems I list here or other problems I did not find, please post them here so that we can find a way to make these ROMs a daily driver as soon as possible.

at the moment:
chineese leak:
amazingly fast, even smoother than gingerbread with custom rom(rocket rom)
no color banding at calculator
video player isnt working
sammy leak:
laggy
color banding at calculator
so far i found these factors. But chineese leak can be used as daily rom.
I'm using chinese rom as daily now.
Chinese leak :
Much faster than XXLP1, also quite a bit more stable. Contacts app is slightly laggy but still worlds better than the one in GB. I'd still prefer stock ICS contacts app. With build.prop hacks it works well. BT works fine for me, although I don't use it a lot(Just to transfer a couple of pictures around)
Video problem : Fix by installing gapps and using stock ICS gallery(I deleted Gallery 3D, it's ugly compared to ICS' one).
XXLP1 :
Well....sucks. Laggier, more unstable than Chinese leak. Presumably older build, voice on phone doesn't work.
Currently using the chinese leak as daily, deleted crappy chinese apps and other samsung apps that I don't need + added CM9 Music app, build.prop tweaks, Nova Launcher, ICS Gallery, Chrome Beta.
The chinese leak hangs because of background ANRs. Other than that it works great.
Initially I wanted to cook a rom based on the chinese leak with AOSP apps (What I really want on my note is the TW S Pen apps + AOSP, or something close) such as AOSP contacts and AOSP SMS, whilst removing all the chinese crapware and some of the samsung crapware (eg: samsung apps) but I think I'll wait until a slightly more stable version comes out..

+1. Should temporary sticky it too. Prevent moronic comments like:
Ok so gone from chinese rom to this one and i gotta say, SAMMOBILE you succckkkk man, you kept us waiting for this pile of doggy doo, this rom seriously sux, crash crash crash, no matter how ya flash it, its poo, slow, laggy, sound static issues, absolutely awful, the unfinished cm9 has less bugs than this.
Reverting back to chinese, that rom is so much better than this.
Oh,
Thanks again sammobile

My intention was indeed to try to prevent the dev threads to be flooded by nondev and nonrelevant posts like that.
I will let this thread live a little and see if I can compile a list on each leak to sum up. Hopefully others that have a little more patience than myself will find ways around a few of the problems we already identified.

i am also using Chinese leak ROM as daily one and it works awesome with all bloatware freezer or removed with TB. Nova launcher works perfectly. I also use exDialer since the stock one is sooo crapy. I just wish I could get rid of TW notifications and get the stock ICS one.
I'm using the Chinese ROM set at 240 DPI (I read that going lower will cause it to freeze and require re-flashing), TouchPal Keyboard, Go Launcher, Go SMS (other SMS wasn't recognizing existing contacts), and I deleted most of the local apps. I haven't really had any problems with it. I think it is good enough to be a daily.
I would like to merge some of the CM9 stuff with this ROM but I think I'll wait for more experienced hands to do it.
I am also on the Chinese rom and it working just fine.... I haven't had any FCs or force reboots and overall its quite slick also ram memory is more than stock gingerbread firmware (816 vs 800mb)
Unstable bluetooth; Disconnects and will not reconnect without toggling BT off/on on handset side.

I'm quite sure you are doing something wrong if all that is happening to you. My handset crashing was resolved when I found out it was an incompatible app, and my contacts with country code works fine.
I am using Chainfire's repack + Gapps and everything seems to be working fine.
There is only issue i have seen no solution to, that is the google calendar is not syncing. It does not appear on my google account at all.
Anyone able to help?

Hmm... Not sure if there's a lot that can be done wrong here. Wiped everything and installed from Mobile Odin.
Now it also has decided to turn down the ringtone and SMS sound. It has become extremely low in volume even though I have set it to max in the Settings - Sound - Volumes.
I think this is down to inconsistencies in the ROM and not me being unable to operate it...

Edit: Rebooting solved the sound issue. For now.

Hey folks,
If you're experiencing problems with calendars - I believe the problem is actually that you are using another version of the Google Apps (and not the one provided in post #1)
I had found my Google Apps ZIP elsewhere with the filename:
gapps-ics-4.0.3-20111217[1].zip
The ZIP you actually need to restore:
gappsv7.1.zip
As soon as I flashed that and gapps_fixer.zip the Sync Calendar option appeared!

[Fix] Voicemail Notification (CDMA)

Just thought I'd throw this out there for anyone who's not getting notifications for their carrier voicemail. This fix worked for me and was a little hard to find. It should work for all CDMA phones (the string is not present, nor is a similar string on my T-Mobile SGS3). I take no credit for the actual fix. Requires root (does that even need to be said?).
Possible fix:
There could be a string missing in a settings file, /data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs/com.android.phone_preferences.xml
<string name="vm_number_key_cdma">##########</string>
Click to collapse
Where ########## is your 10 digit phone number.
If you just edit that file (make a back up if you want to be safe) and add the line above somewhere between the <map> </map> XML tags, replacing the ########## with your phone number (no dashes or parentheses), then reboot, you should be getting notifications again.
Check out the source for more info.
Source:Phandroid
The file doesn't appear for me even if I leave a voicemail
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Scratch that. I find the file but a reboot doesn't get the voice mail icon to come back. If I go into the file again it says there is a voice but no notification pops up.

Has anyone figured out this issue yet? I tried the suggested fix above but it doesn't work for me either. I'm running 4.2.2 Carbon ROM on a Samsung Fascinate and do not get any notifications when I have voicemails. I've searched around this forum and google as well and there isn't too much information on this issue. Some say it's a known issue in all recent 4.2.2 ROMs, some say it's in all AOSP-based ROMs, etc... Anyone out there know of a fix?

I have had the issue for as long as I can remember it seems, no matter the rom. Its to the point I expect it and/or just have learned to accept it. I don't get that many lately for it to be a huge huge deal besides the whole job hunting process lol Tried prolly most things things have popped up over time but no solid fixes. With messing around I can get it to pop up a few times and it is always delayed or random when it does and it will also stick in the status bar for a bit even after clearing any unread till it randomly goes away or I clear the responsible/corresponding system apk's data. and that be the most I ever see of it, a downfall i guess & either you deal with it or your don't I suppose. Your not alone brotha lol

Voicemail indicator worked in 4.1.x, but broke in 4.2.x. there is only one ROM - GEE-WIZ, where the dev actually figured out what was wrong and fixed it. It is now my daily driver, although I miss some of the AOKP features. None of the other developers have picked up the fix and implemented it in their ROMs. The voice mail indicator problem has to do with the code looking for a SIM card and not finding it. Eveyone else seems content with using google voice as a work around, I don't find that a good solution, except when I want a few laughs from bad transcriptions.
I just wanted to say that this actually sort of got notifications working for me again. I'm using a Droid Incredible 2 running PAC 4.2.2, and ever since upgrading to it, I would not receive voicemail notifications.
I made the appropriate change to the file, rebooted, left a voicemail in my box, rebooted again, and I had a notification saying that there was a message waiting!
The reason I say "sort of working" is because I didn't receive the notification while waiting directly after leaving the message. Normally, I'll receive a new voicemail notification within a minute of one being left. But, I suppose this is better than nothing.
If any new developments or fixes are found, please update this thread!
Its still broke. Voicemail notification has always come up after a reboot but that is of no use. This is not an improvement.

[Q] Custom Rom - CM Quiet Hours

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I'm hoping that I can get some help as I was never able to find this solution via Google.
Anyhow, I'm running LiquidSmooth 2.9/Franco.K on a Nexus 4, but I can't seem to figure out for the life of me how to make the OS-integrated quiet hours work. I can't find any guide for setup and they do not seem to be working for me.
Can someone explain if this works on the Nexus or how?
Bump. I know I probably shouldn't do this, but I would really like to know if there's an answer.
I'll assume that Liquid has them under Settings>Sounds>Quiet Hours as well?
It should be as easy as: Enable, set your hours, check the boxes for the things you want disabled, done.
There's no trick to it, and I've never seen it NOT work on a ROM yet, although I've never run Liquid. The only thing it won't do is silence notifications where the app uses the wrong API and uses a ringtone vs a notification tone.

Hmmm. I wonder if that's the case. I'll have to borrow my brother's phone and experiment. Many thanks!

How can I tie the ringtone and notification sound together?

I recall this option on my rooted S3 (6.0 ROMs) in settings, so raising/lowering ringtone volume would be for both ringtone and notification. Any way to do this on S7 Edge (stock)? I have no intention of rooting, if that's the only way that's fine at least I'll know. Thanks!

I want this too but unfortunately they haven't implemented that feature in the stock os. I have dug around the menus to make sure, definitely not in there. I think the only way would be to root but then you'll have to find a rom that has it unless there is a root application that can change that particular setting.
It is annoying but I don't think it's worth rooting over. I have a rule of five to justify rooting. So if there's five things that really annoy me about a phone rom which I can change through rooting then I do it but I haven't had any major issues with the stock rom yet.
Wish I could've been more help.

Alert Slider Mod in A10

I don't understand why no one else cares about the alert slider mod anymore. As of now, the slider is basically useless to me because I have to be reachable 24/7, so silent mode is unusable. Tying Dnd to the alert slider was an issue in the past because Dnd can be scheduled in software. But those of us that work completely different hours all the time would much rather have the simple hardware switch, and no software timers at all!
I can almost understand this not being possible without root, but with root, ANYTHING should be possible. As I noted here, functionality can be added to the switch, but no amount of Googling and probing around on my own could find a way to disable the built in functionality, but there HAS to be a way. I heard some custom ROMs have it, but not sure which ones. Maybe OnePlus devs tied it directly into the code for the ringer control in A10?
Anyone interested in developing this, even for money?
Anyone have any ideas?
Or know which custom roms have this

I haven't tried any a10 ROMs but I recall every pie rom I used having this feature. I would be shocked if it were different with 10. Try a couple and see what you like not terribly time consuming and can always revert to a backup of stock exactly how your phone is currently set up if you don't find what you want. Good luck

Yes, I mentioned that in the opening post, but as far as I know, you can't "unlink" the slider functionality from ringer control, making the Tasker integration almost useless. But thanks.

Thanks. Good to hear it's well supported. I don't understand why it's so easy for custom ROMs to have this feature, yet so hard to back-port the feature to stock OOS.
Seems overboard to change ROMs for one thing, doesn't it?
