Nexus 7 Bluetooth Keyboard Mouse Issues - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can connect my bluetooth keyboard and Nexus 7 and they work fine together (keyboard is Apple, btw). The mouse also connects fine. However, when they are BOTH connected, the keyboard behaves strangely repeats and misses keys etc. It's like there's an interference between the two. I'm on Android 4.2 stock.
This was previously a problem with Android 4.12 as well. I have never had problems like this with iPhone or Playbook or PC.
Any ideas on how to make them work better together?

nope

The long and the short of it...the N7 can't handle more than one thing at a time on it's WiFi/Bluetooth chipset.

Have the same problem, on all Android devices. It sucks, because I was expecting my Android tablets to be laptop-replacements this way :/

Can't pair Bluetooth keyboard and mouse at the same time

I originally saw this happen on Xoom devices over a year ago, but I never got the Xoom and thus didn't pay much attention to it. Now Android 4.1 is out, and I've taken the plunge with a Nexus 7. But, I still wanted to use it like a laptop in some cases, so today I finally picked up a Logitech keyboard to accompany my existing Razer Orochi. However, there's a massive conflict with this setup.
Every time I connect both of them over Bluetooth at the same time, the Orochi kicks out the keyboard, and it gets stuck in a constant loop of disconnect/reconnect. The mouse continues to work fine, but attempting any input from the keyboard during this will cause the OS to go nuts. I wish I had a better description of the behavior, but basically the app currently in focus will just refresh, quick and jerky.
When I'm in the Bluetooth settings, I can see the Orochi picked up as a mouse, but if I go into Language and Input, for some reason I can still select a keyboard layout for the Orochi. I witnessed similar behavior on my Galaxy Nexus when I paired just the Orochi by itself, basically I had no soft keyboard input while the Orochi was connected because the OS thought it was a physical keyboard.
What gives? How come Android can't differentiate a mouse from a keyboard, when it works just fine in Linux on my desktop?
Anybody else have this happen to them?
That's strange.
I've paired an Apple Wireless keyboard and mouse and it works great concurrently. No issues.

I haven't heard of any issues with Apple peripherals. Just a few different mice that this happens with, such as the Orochi. Reference thread.

Is there something wrong with the Bluetooth on Jelly Bean and/or Nexus 7?

Is there something wrong with the Bluetooth feature on Jellybean 4.1 or the with the Nexus 7 itself?
I bought a Bluetooth Keyboard for it for about $30. When it's working it works great, but it just randomly drops out when I am in the middle of typing. If I press the button to the right then they will connect to each other again, but then it drops out again in a few minutes. It's pretty much a useless device, because I can't keep constantly pressing the button while I am typing, it slows me down dramatically.
Does anyone know of any specific problems with Bluetooth on the Nexus 7 or with the Jellybean ROM?
I've been looking for a USB/MicroUSB keyboard to replace this one, but they all look so cheap and flimsy, so if you have any suggestions on that end they would be appreciated.
I know everyone hates when someone does this.
But my motorolla Bluetooth keyboard has been working very well no disconnects. I also use a mouse on occasion that has yet to fail me. I would check to see if you have a lot of Bluetooth devices nearby.
I am using stock kernel and ROM not rooted.
I use the keyboard and mouse together with zero issues so far.

Did you try testing that keyboard with other devices to see if the keyboard works properly?
No, but I will try that with my Droid RAZR and let you all know how it worked out.
Bluetooth file shares go smoothly, I've transferred at least a GB through Bluetooth. Bugs me that I have to change .epub and .apk files to .mp4 though.
I do Bluetooth with tablet talk, and Bluetooth connect to phone for network on cm10 rom. No issues, no dropping

I've used my wifes Logitect BT keyboard several times for 10-15 minutes at a time, no problem. I paired a mouse once to see it work, used it about 30 seconds.

Good lord, use some other method then.. Bluetooth is both slower than wifi and... renaming stuff? No way. There are plenty of other methods to transfer files to Android over wifi.

bluetooth completely borked. fix it google!

I've been trying to get a BT mouse to work on my nexus 4.
i've now tried 2 different models, without success.
both are recognized, both pair and then both completely fail to work.
to add insult to injury, i tried one of those mice on a friend's samsung google nexus today -- also running jellybean -- and it worked perfectly.
could anybody running a BT mouse successfully SINCE THE LAST UPDATE (4.2.1) let me know what make/model they have?
EDIT: maybe they heard me ...

i understand your frustration, but just one question.. why are you using a bluetooth mouse on a phone? tablet, understandable but phone?!

take a nexus 4 + slimport adaptor + BT mouse + BT keyboard,
add an lcd TV with hdmi input (now common in hotels etc.),
and you have:
- a portable PC
- a decent home media centre (with armchair remote input)
- possibly a productivity tool for editing text/ photos etc. for which a touchscreen is too inprecise an input device.
understand now?
Instead of doing all that why wouldn't you just go wireless display and then use the phone as the remote at the sametime? Wouldn't that make more sense?
And AFAIK, bluetooth input devices weren't supported?
sorry, i typically use a laptop for those things. It would make a lot more sense btw. You can also use your phone as a bluetooth mouse/keyboard if you have a laptop that connects to a tv.

a/ i haven't a clue what "go wireless display" means.
b/ "use the phone as a remote" ... for what exactly? and how does that help me?
c/ where has google stated that "bluetooth input devices weren't supported"? that's nonsense.
re-read my previous post and try to get your head around what i am trying to achieve.

Wow, you are quite "the absurd man". If you're trying to find help in a forum, it's best if you be a bit nicer. We're both trying to give you better alternatives to what you're trying to accomplish. To answer your questions...
A/wireless display technology is built in with the n4 and jelly bean and it's not yet widely available to most tv's yet but achievable with adapters.
B/so you don't have to carry around a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. It helps you with 2 less things you carry (unless you're using a combo).
C/this one I can't back him cause I thought it is supported. Maybe it is broken, but I don't use it so I wouldn't know

... perhaps more sense to you, not me.
i don't want to carry a laptop around when i already have a computer in my pocket.
and i'm not happy with touch input devices as they are too slow and lack the precision needed for heavy editing.
these are my (not i.m.o. unreasonable) requirements of the nexus 4.

getting the display to the TV is no problem -- i already have a slimport adaptor! why would i want to max out my wifi for that? it's bananas!
and i've already said that i don't want to use touch input as it's too slow and inprecise for my purposes.
my portable (igo stowaway) keyboard and notebook BT mouse are tiny (and inexpensive).
sorry to seem abrasive but you are not getting what i'm trying to achieve here.

i've heard other people making the tablet/ phone distinction before and i'm not sure it's a valid one. the nexus 4 surely IS a tablet, albeit with a smaller physical (not resolution) screen. what else distinguishes a tablet? i use my N4 in exactly the same way i used my asus transformer and playbook.

In your first post you didn't clarify that you were going to hook it up to a tv, so I assume that you were planning to connect a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard to your n4 and try to work from it's bit-smaller-than 5" display, which is highly unproductive.
N4 is technically a phone, not a tablet, by definition and specifications. I shouldn't have to explain the differences between a phone and a tablet (I'm sure there's a thread with detailed explanations)... just because it's running the same os doesn't mean it has the same hardware classification.
I understand that you want your N4 to replace your computer and the technology is very close, but not quite there yet... For simple tasks, it's good, but for anything editing, a laptop computer is highly more productive than a phone. Imagine you're doing something and you constantly receive phone calls and text messages.
Anyways, I will test this later when I get home and see if it's really broken. I know my Bluetooth moga game controller works just fine so I don't know why your mouse wouldn't.

i'd appreciate that, thanks.
my BT keyboard works fine, but no mouse that i've tried.
Bluetooth is pretty much borked in all versions of Jellybean for all devices. Some things work and some things don't its pretty hit or miss. Version 4.2.1 added some drivers for game controllers but not much else so that's probably why those work and things like mice don't. There is supposed to be another fix coming in the next version but all that's known to be in there for sure is a fix for A2DP streaming.

however, the (jellybean) samsung google nexus has no problem running a BT mouse, as i saw today.
i'd like to raise awareness of this problem with the N4 and get some more response from users, which has so far been sparse, probably because (as other posters in this thread have indicated) few see the need for a mouse.
for instance, somebody reported on another thread that they had been able to make a microsoft 5000 notebook mouse work. can anybody corroborate that?
i'm reluctant to shell out for yet another mouse considering that i'm currently holding 2 non-functioning ones.
not sure how much good it's going to do but i've opened an issue (#43918 Nexus 4 -- bluetooth mouse not working.) with the android development project:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=43918&thanks=43918&ts=1359688071#makechanges
"bluetooth mouse not working on nexus 4 (jellybean 4.2.1)
i've tried 2 different models of bluetooth mouse. both are detected and pair, and are recognized in settings as input divices, but i get no on-screen cursor nor any mouse/ button input registed by the device. nothing.
the same mice work properly on a samsung google nexus."
i've had one response to my issue at google already.
could anybody else who is having this problem please add to that thread also?

meanwhile i'm awaiting delivery of a microsoft notebook 5000 BT mouse which has been reported to work by another poster. i'll report back on that when it arrives
UPDATE:
at last i've found a mouse that works!

[Q] Bluetooth Keybard + Bluetooth Touchpad + WiFi = Doom

Been digging around the forum, and trying various kernels, to no avail. My dream setup is eluding me!
Nexus 10. Stock ROM, 4.2.2. Any popular kernel. Apple bluetooth keyboard, Apple bluetooth touchpad. Works great, as long as WiFi is off.
With WiFi on, the Nexus does not properly recognize key presses from the bluetooth keyboard. In particular, the 'stopped pushing that button' part. So teeeeext looooookkks lllliiiike thiiiiis. Sucky.
It's only with WiFi on. If Wifi is off, and the trackpad is not connected, the keyboard works perfectly. If the keyboard is not connected, the trackpad works perfectly (which is does actually anyway, touch registers very well, no matter what else is connected).
Does anybody know of any ROM / Kernel combination that resolves this issue? It's the only one tiny thing I'm missing to have this be the perfect setup for me. I already stopped using my Wintel laptop, this is my full time setup, including light design work, Web stuff, and programming. It's a thing of beauty, minus having to always reach up to the screen.
Any constructive input appreciated. "You don't need a touchpad" type commentary, yea, whatever. I'm mostly interested in being able to sort out this bug.
Seems to be a common problem for nexus 7 as well. Possible solutions, none of them ideal.
1. If you have a dual band router, try setting it to 5hz and turn off 2.4. (Apparently, 2.4 may interfere with the Bluetooth band)
2. External keyboard helper from the play store has an option to stop repeat key press. (I can not confirm, you may want to ask the dev.)

Unfortunately I don't have control over the router.
External keyboard helper, on the other hand, a BRILLIANT suggestion. Bought it, mitigates the problem to a point where it's basically usable. Not perfect but miles better. Bonus, the keyboard mapping allow for using the volume and brightness keys on the keyboard. Awesome!

Cool app. The developer is on XDA as well.

Can you at least change the WiFi channel in the router?? If it is interference that would resolve the issue. A kernel or ROM won't have a magical fix.
I can think of 2 solutions, although both of them involve NOT using Apple peripherals.
1. I got a case / BT keyboard combo for under $40, inexpensive, and works with wifi on 2.4 and 5 GHz.
2. You could always go USB
I'm using my Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse through OTG. Works well in the absence of Bluetooth hardware

[Q] Does the Rii i8+ Wireless 2.4G Mini Keyboard work?

I've thought about getting the Rii i8+ Wireless 2.4G Mini Keyboard to use with the Nexus Player, my Raspberry Pi, and other android devices. Does anyone know if it works with the Nexus Player? I know that it's Bluetooth, and I suspect that the keyboard works fine, but I wonder if the trackpad works at all. I've tried pairing my old Sony NSZ-GS8 Google TV remote and the trackpad doesn't work at all nor do some of the more convenient buttons on the non-keyboard side.

I have the same question - its amazing to me that this device doesn't natively support all Android compatible devices.... Seems like that should be rather straightforward. There should be some sort of simple certification process for accessories to be Android 5.0 compatible....
If someone could check and let us know if it works I'd appreciate it.:good:
Yes. I have one and it works perfectly. It is not BT it uses a receiver dongle which you must plug in via USB OTG.
Work fine with M8S android tv box

Touch pad & keyboard works flawlessly. It uses a small dongle (like some wireless mouse), not bluetooth. One annoying thing about it is, turns off/go to standby mode after within a minute of inactivity. It is a nuisance for me, but it does save a loot of battery life. And battery life is really really good for this remote. After purchasing, I charged it only once in 4 months (I don't use is everyday though). Backlight is really good & useful too!
I would use is it as default remote for my Nexus Player, but that auto sleep mode is irritating to me. When it is in sleep mode, it takes about 3-4 seconds to get ready for action. Otherwise, its a very good remote.
I'm computer stupid but I bought this keyboard and can't for the life of me figure out how to use it with my nexus player. Can you explain it for dummies??
All you need to do is buy a USB-OTG micro USB adapter, then plug in the receiver you got into the Nexus Player with it, it is plug and play. Just switch it on.
I've just bought the Bluetooth version and the trackpad is appalling, not even useable. Do you think I would be better off with Wi-Fi version or something different? Very disappointed after the good reviews!

I was just about to buy one of these (to use with my Nexus 6).
What's the problem with the trackpad? And did you find a better keyboard to replace it with?
I bought it to use with the Nexus player I have just bought. The track pad hardly responded and was basically not useable. From looking at other peoples reviews on Amazon, this seems to be the way it is. To me it should not be sold if it doesn't work. I bought a otg cable and paired the Nexus player with the Logitech k400 plus wireless keyboard. This is so much better and the track pad works perfectly.
