[Q] N7 wont charge, tried my friends charger too. - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my nexus 7 wont charge. I tried a friends charger to see if that would work and nothing. I bought it right when they came out... how can I go about getting this fixed? Thanks in advance!

let's run through a few different experiments here:
1) are you using the charger provided with your nexus 7? this charger will be faster than other micro usb cables.
2) are you using different outlets for your attempts?
3) have you tried connecting your nexus 7 to a computer with your cords? does the computer recognize the nexus 7?
if your nexus 7 is completely dead, a connected charger should bring up a battery filling animation. if you are using a different usb than the one provided with your nexus 7, you may need to jiggle the cord a bit. get a book and place it under the connecting part of the cord where you plug it in to your nexus 7. sometimes this work for me with my kindle micro usb cord. push the cord firmly into the nexus 7. see if this helps.
if you are using a 3rd party cord, it will take quite a bit longer to charge. it may not show any change for around 10 minutes.

Try different outlets too? That would be hard to believe that it would be dead already

I own an original Asus Transformer TF101 and those have been known to randomly stop charging for various reasons, usually due to the USB connection or Asus' own charging brick. After tightening the USB connections with a tiny flat-head screwdriver I still couldn't get mine to charge so I tried a crazy suggestion that worked for a few people, put your charging brick in the freezer for 10 minutes. Something about the internals overheating, tripping a fail-safe and the only way to reset it is by cooling it down. I'll be damned if it didn't work. Never had to do it since. I kept the brick plugged in at all times but only charged the tablet when needed (every few days) and never charging for more than 24 hours.
Since Asus makes the N7 and has the same brick-to-USB cord setup, figured it might be worth a try.

and how exactly would I go about doing this?

Take your power brick only (remove the USB cord), put it in a zip-lock bag and place it in your freezer for 10-15 minutes then hook everything back up and see if it charges.

I just received a replacement seven yesterday for that exact same issue. for days I couldn't get it to charge, so I called google play customer service about it. I've had it since they came out, without any issue. then it just stopped charging. anyways, google play customer service asked if I tried other chargers, chords, outlets. I did, I tried at least 15 different chargers and chords, different combinations even. so, I was told that it sounded defective, and they offered me a replacement right away. I did get the first nexus 7 to charge BTW, after smacking the back rather firmly a few times, it'll charge with the screen off only.

Car Charing not working

I tried to charge my Tilt today using the Car Charger that I got with it from AT&T but it isn't working. I accidently jammed my stylus into the mini usb port a few weeks ago andthen but it didn't look any different and nothing seemed to break off. It will still charge with my wall charger at home and will still sync with my computer. I know that the car charger is supposed to charge my phone faster but it should still use the same connections as my regular one..right? Could it be the ROM possibly? I can't test this right now because I am at work and my phone won't sync with my work computer.
Sorry if this is in the wrong forum please move if it is.
Check the cigarette plug in your car, sometimes it can be full with dirt on the connector in the car.
I had the same problem today and cleaned it out just with a screwdriver so that its connecting now.
Well the light on the charger is lit so I assume there is power going to it and it works with my mom's razr charger. The USB port actually looks dirty but I wouldnt know how to clean it out lol

I had issues with my Tilt not charging in the car, which turned out to be a weird issue with CardExport. I had the CardExport tray icon set to autostart, and my phone would not charge in the car - only when connected to a PC. Disabling the CardExport tray icon and doing a soft reset fixed it. Now if I need to use CardExport I just start it manually.

Check your mini-usb connector on the phone, if the bit in the middle doesnt seem level it won't charge at full speed
bartimeus - Did you ever find a solution to this? I have been using Igo on my phone in the car heavily over the past few days for long trips. I have 3 car chargers and all wont charge the phone (resulting in no loss of satnav :-S).
Oddly, my phone shows that it is charging - sometimes only for a few minutes, sometimes continuosly - but it doesn't.
I accidentally shoved my stylus in the USB port too about 10 months ago and i wonder if this is a result of that. Odd it charges from a PC by usb and mains though - but not via a car charger.
I found that any of the Cheap ass Chargers I used won't charge it. I'm waiting for my HTC made one to arrive so I can find out if there is an issue.
I read on a thread a while back about pin 4 and pin 5 need to be soldered together for the Kaiser to want to charge.

Not sure if this is the case for Tytn II, my Asus P525 need to have the middle 2 pins (D+ and D-) short in order to charge.

I don't know how you come up w/ Pin5 as USB has only 4 pins (5+, Ground, D+, D-). Read the spec here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB
I will do the mod on one of my adapter tonight and verify it

Then it would be pin 2 and pin3 for D+ and D-.
Ok, let me share what I found so far and the result turns out to be very surprising. I have 3 different cigarette to usb adapter (yes, I got lot of gadgets to feed in my car. ). And the test are done w/ maximum backlight and A2DP music to my JVC BT-1.
1. Cheapo w/o current rating label, (I guess it's about ~500ma). D+ and D- shorted
2. Another cheapo rated w/ 650ma. D+ and D- NOT shorted
3. An expensive one w/ rated at 2A (yes, this is the only one w/ enough juice for my power hungry Dell Axim x51v). D+ and D- NOT shorted.
result: 1 = work, 2 = not work, 3 = not work.
Then I shorted both 2 and 3
result: 1 = work, 2 = not work, 3 = not work.
It seem shorten D+ and D- does not change the result. Just about to conclude I didn't prove anything and about to give up, and I try a different USB to mini-USB cable. It surprise me all of them are working!!!
From the pic below, the charging icon of battery status mean the cable is connected. Current w/ a plus sign mean the Tilt is being charge
Cable 1:

}
Cable2:
Therefore, I conclude:
1. it turns out my AT&T Tilt are very picky about the USB cable quality.
2. For cigar to USB adapter, maximum support current and the quality may not very important.
3. We may or we may not need to shorten D+ and D- since I don't want to spend time to unshort them.
p.s. I still don't understand why cable 1 gives bigger charge on adapter 1 but refuse to charge on the rest, while cable 2 give consistent charge on all adapter. I re-test several times but gives the same result.
Short Pin 5 (+5V) and Pin 4 (unused). And tell me what happens.

The mini-usb plug is too tiny for me to work on it. I will pass it to whoever has the tool to test it.
Right, as I posted earlier, I have 3 cheap car chargers - 1 with integral cable and 2 that are just the adapter and require a separate cable. None charge my phone. A usb cable that works from my pc fails to charge in the car.
So, I bought a genuine HTC car charger. I fully expected this to work fine, but it doesn't. It does exactly the same as the cheapo chargers - My phone shows the amber charging light for a minute or two, then it goes out. No charging takes place at all. The battery icon shows charging all the time the cable is plugged in though.
My ciggarette socket is fine and supplies enough current to make the ciggarette lighter thingy glow hot.
/baffled.

Do you have other USB cable to try?
Hey all, No i have not yet found a solution for this problem. I believe I have a genuine HTC charger or at least an AT&T one because i got it witha bundle with my phone from AT&T. I am looking at the USB plug and it seems to be bent down a bit on the right side as you are looking at it.
I think i might talk to my girlfriends cousin who works for AT&T and see if he can be awesome and replace it for me without me having to put the AT&T crap back on there for an actual warranty return.
still charges at home wall plug in and syncs with my computer just fine
This is how i get around this happens, though it sucks if you're using it as a navigation device. When it stops chagrining through the car adapter, I leave the cable plugged into teh phone and the cigarette/power adapter and do a soft reset. This seems to clear it up somehow and it starts charging.

No LED indicator lights on 8525

Hello again, I finally bought the 8525 (As-Is for $115) on Tuesday from an eBay member, which arrived Friday. There was a known issue with the phone not turning on, but I just figured it was a battery or maybe a bad power supply. The following day, I purchased a 3-piece AC/DC/USB kit for $6.29, which arrived Saturday. Just last night I ordered 2 Li-Ion batteries on eBay for $12.98. I also downloaded the pdf of the owner's manual for the 8525.
With the above scenario in mind, I do not see any indicator lights at all when the USB cord is plugged into the phone and computer. I've read that "jump starting" the battery may help it charge up again, but is the solution that easy? I may have misinterpreted that as meaning to use the jump start if the LED is red only -- not when the LED out completely. If that idea fails, would using a new battery be a quick fix?
I am being very cautious with my investment, so bear with me. Once the phone powers on, which version of the ROM should I install? I don't want the phone to crash or, worse yet, never work again. What about tweaks (programs) to add to it? I've seen a few listed on various threads, but not really noticed if they work independently (i.e. not in a series with other programs, but 'a la carte').
Thanks in advance for your patience and future help with a novice phone tweaker. If possible, use "layman's terms" as I've never tweaked a newer phone and I'm not really up on the lingo.
Just a quick update . . . I attempted to power up the phone via USB cable, with the battery removed, and still no red LED appears. The phone doesn't show the "white dot" having changed colors, and the battery still has the normal red polka dot on white background.
I know that's not much info to go on, but any ideas what could be wrong? I have never seen the phone powered up, nor has the person I bought it from had it powered up. However, the person he received it from did say it powered up for her.
Thanks for any assistance!
If tyhe red led doesn't turn on when you connect into the power WITHOUT the battery then theres something wrong with the hardware... It should show the red led when connected to the power, Orange for charging and finally Green for fully charged.
You may have bought a dud, sorry...
Yep, does not seem hopeful. As stated above the Red LED should light when plugged into charger if the battery is out or if the battery is not charging, otherwise it should be orange to show it's charging.
It might just be a disconnected internal connector but I'm doubting that a little. It may be the internal fuse:

But replacing that or even testing it is not an amateur job unless you have a good knowledge of electronics.

Sorry for the long delay in replying, I've been away from the computer for a while.
Yesterday, I did take the 8525 to a "Sprint/Nextel/Verizon" seller/repairer.
He couldn't fully repair it, as AT&T didn't give him permission to do so. He did assist me as much as he could. He thought the charging port may have been loose, so he checked it and reseated it . . . but that didn't help. I also mentioned to him about the fuse [as I read that was a problem on another thread] but he didn't see it as blown.
I found a website online that says they can repair any cell phone issue -- even water damage -- starting at $29 (parts are sold separately). I am considering this, if it is plausible to be repaired at all. I would like to do this option as a last resort though. Are there any other options to look into beside the fuse or charging port?
Before giving the go ahead, find out how much are the parts and if they are being re-used...
Cheers...

Great idea, thanks! I would need to know what other parts could need replaced, so to ask their pricing. There was another repair place in New York state that repairs for $99 or so. I doubt either of you have used their services, but in general what would be the cause of such difference in pricing? Is it the same in the cell phone world, "What little you pay equals the same amount in quality."? Does anyone from the board here who's used that company's services have any feedback from them?
On a tangent, I have read that the "white screen of death" may not be fully repairable, so I hope my phone doesn't have that issue when it's fixed! (I Just read the first and last page of that thread, as most of it was over my novice head.)
I have a 8125 and a 8525. I had a problem when trying to charge them when completely dead. After talking to ATT I found out that once the phone goes below a certain charge, the charger I bought and the usb charger did not have enough miliamps to charge the phone. I could not get any LED's to appear. I had to buy the manufacture recommended charger. Once I did that the phone charged with no problems and the LED lights appeared as soon as I plug it in.
Get the specs on your charger and make sure your charger has at least the recommend milliamps for charging or buy the manufactured charger. I made sure at that point not to let the phone go completely dead so I could use other usb and cig chargers on the go.

Thanks for the response! I feel honored that I was your first post on this site, that is very thoughtful of you to register just to reply to my problems!
I don't have the AC charger that came with the cell, but I did buy one on eBay -- not sure if it's the same specs as the OEM though.
I just got back from an AT&T repair/replace shop. They couldn't repair the phone, so they gave me a reconditioned one in place of it! I'll post another thread for other help with the phone. Mostly tweaks and software "upgrades" (if you get the drift).
Thanks again to all who replied to me! I greatly appreciate all your time and efforts!
The charger should be 5v 1A. If not, then it's not the right charger.

That's correct. Many chargers for various other phones etc are 5v 500mA and although they will work they can cause problems through being underpowered. Strange things can happen like the phone not charging unless it is turned off, sudden battery drain despite being plugged in and in some cases the battery charge can drop so low that the charging circuit gets - how shall I put it - confused.
So an underpowered charger is OK for occassional use but I would personally only use it with the device either off or in standby mode to top up the battery. I would NOT use it if my battery was below 10% charge and I would not operate the device whilst plugged into a charger with less than 1A.

Completely Dead, No LED
I read this constantly but don't post often. My 8525 from ATT is out of warranty and did this same thing. It went dead while I was at a football (American Football) game. When on wall charger there's no Red LED. Seems like the fuse or some other major hardware meltdown. I have 2 batteries and put both in a friend's 8525 and they work perfectly. I cleaned battery connectors in phone.
Any suggestions on identifying the problem or fixing it? I'm waiting on the ATT Fuze to replace this and am now stuck on an old RAZR.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You've proof it's not the battery
Without testing it's impossible to be conclusive but likely culprits are the m/board fuse (as you say) or the soldered battery connector contacts (to m/board). One other more remote possibility might be the main internal flex cable connector - less likely I think but it would cut off the led daughter board if it was not connected along with everything else. (Less likely as it is held in place by tape.

Can fuse be replaced
Thank you Mike. Can the fuse be replaced or does the whole motherboard need to if that goes?

It could be replaced if you can locate the correct component but not something to do with a standard soldering iron. A repair centre should manage it.

Though would probably be cheaper to find a "broken" Hermes and use for parts than send to repair center...

[Tip] To minimize over-HEAT-ing the phone when charging

I don't normally charge my batteries in the phone, as i usually cycle through 3 ~ 5 sets of batteries, extremely convenient and handy.
But today i was playing around with the phone and well forgot to bring along an extra battery pack, so i was forced to charge the phone meanwhile using it.
everything was cool for the longest time, until i started up WiFi
shortly after I started using WiFi the phone got extremely hot 60c
i was concerned about burning the CPU, RAM, screen, and whatever else might be near that area (right above the battery)
the battery itself was not hot, so i knew it was not the battery that was causing the heat
past experiences in WM phones WiFi usually causes the device to heat up pretty quickly.
but that was not the case with the SGS, since i've used the phone a lot before with WiFi and it did not get hot at all
So the fault combination that created this insane HEAT was the WiFi draining the battery faster than it can be charged back, which caused a cascading effect of a feedback loop on the system.
As soon as i removed the charging usb cable, the system started to cool down very quickly, even with the WiFi running.
So, lesson learned, do not charge battery in the phone meanwhile using WiFi

you can use the phone and charge the phone at the same time, as long as WiFi is OFF

I do this all the time. Maybe you have a faulty handset. It doesn't happen for me. And besides when usb/charger is plugged in the battery is not used. Only charged. Take you're battery out and plug in the charger. The phone works.
OR perhaps your "real battery" is fake. Are you using the original charger?
You know I have never done the battery swap thing, thought about it but haven't done it. My devices however live on there supplied chargers every night, all night 365 days a year. Some cheap car chargers have caused my iDevices to get warm, but never the household ones. The only time I have ever been able to provoke heat with a normal charge cord was during a long tether session.

Mine doesn't overheat and I never turn WIFI off - your problems are not everyone else's.
Yep, same here, I have charged a few times when wi-fi was on and battery overheat never happened to me as I usually play "live" games before I sleep and charge while doing this.
I had this issue once while charging in the car and using the phone. I noticed a burning smell so i unplugged immediately. I believe its a software bug and havent had a problem since but im still carefull about heavy use while charging. I also have my phone mounted right over my ac vent now to help keep things cool.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I've tried charging the phone while surfing the web with wifi and the it only goes up to 42 wifi plus playing games gives about 48. So if you are getting 60 something is wrong

I leave my WiFi on (Sleep policy set to 'Never') when my phone charges overnight. It does not get hot, it's barely even warm when I pick it up.
What really does heat it up for me is the GPS. When I left Google Maps Navigation running for a 30min trip the phone was hot, although not so hot that I couldn't hold it.
I never checked the temperature so I can't tell you what it was, but I guess it could be 60 degrees Celsius.
I was using my SGS in the car with both WiFi and GPS on (using sat nav, plus I habitually don't turn wifi off). The unit was plugged into a Belkin brand Car->USB charger, connected to the phone via a Samsung USB data lead.
The phone was in bright sun on the dash, and it popped up a warning that the battery (I think) had got too hot and that charging was being suspended. This was probably made worse by the fact that I use a black silicon skin case.
This was under 'Eclair', couldn't tell you what flavour though.
So it looks as though some firmware manages the situation OK.
I must say that the comments about not leaving your device on charge for long periods of time would seem extraordinary, given that our phones should have enough intelligence to manage battery charge in an effective way.
Phil
for the ones wondering, that is using the battery that came with the phone and the usb cable that came with the phone
Well, same thing here. Wifi is always on, and the phone doesn't even break a sweat while charging. With "break a sweat" I mean it doesn't get warmer than normal. Both with USB and the travel adapter. Everything bog standard.
just out of curiosity, for the ones that are not getting hot, do you have GPS and Bluetooth disabled?
i keep my screen set to always on, to prevent the WiFi cut off when it goes to power saving mode, GPS and WiFi is always on as i always keeps my Apps running in the background

I leave GPS switched on, but I don't leave any apps running that use it so it's not active. And I have Bluetooth off.
I guess that explains it all.
I leave everything on - BT, GS, WIFI, and probably a bunch of other stuff Im not even aware of. No warming at all - and doesn't matter if its plugged into the wall or getting the charge from a PC - always cool to the touch.

But your PC is plugged into the wall, surely?
I suppose the PC would protect the phone if the surge isn't too powerful though.
I plug mine into the wall to charge since its more convenient for me, so I can leave it charging on the table next to my bed overnight.

[Q] Flat batteried Nexus 7.....battery connector pinouts?

Hi all,
I have had my 7 for a while however I left it for several days after it ran out of juice and I'm now experiencing the issue where it cannot charge via usb. I have an appropriate battery charger and intend to juice the battery up slightly whilst disconnected from the pad to give it enough power to rise from the dead and charge normally.
Has anyone looked into which of the 6 connections coming from the battery do what? There are obviously 2 red, 2 black, a yellow and a white. Is there something like a 5v, 12v and data connection??
Can someone educate me to which connections I can apply voltage to, to charge it please?
I would rather go down this route if possible rather than going through warranty as I have no backup of the items currently on my nexus.
Any help would be very appreciated.
Cheers,
Rob
What little I know about Li Po cells/batteries is:
The nexus 7 has a single cell battery rated at 3.7v - no 5v or 12v
Charging outside the Nexus is DANGEROUS. Protective bags are used to hold LiPo cells whilst charging (and transporting them).
Where the wires enter the cell there is a thin section that will be a PCB with protective electronics that will monitor the temperature of the cell.
Your red/black pairs COULD be a pair for charging and a pair to power the Nexus and the white and yellow ???????
Your charger should have this info in its instructions.
Two remarks to finish DON'T DO IT and search Youtube for "LiPo overcharge"
I've done it with phone batteries when I've been at a mates or something and I've ran out of battery and not had my charger.
Its safe, provided you give it the correct voltage, to the correct pins lol, and don't try and fully charge. Give it 50% of its normal charge time max. But since you only need to get into the boot loader to properly power off so it will charge again you're only speaking about a quick ten minute charge..
As for the two pairs, its maybe a 2 cell battery.
White and yellow are likely temperature sensor.

I'm facing exactly the same problem, and no "normal" work-arounds seem to be working for me, I just can't get into the bootloader. So it is either trying to recharge it myself or buying a battery..
So given the fact that you have done it with other devices, could you please explane how you would start with all this? Here is a picture of of the nexus 7 battery connector, if it would help you:

I was thinking about molesting the usb cable of my htc and use the black and red cables to charge the battery (I suppose that a USB output can not put a to high voltage to the battery?), but I do not know which red/black poles to use on the battery connector..
Thank you very much in advance!
Erwin
Ive never done one with two pairs like that, but here's what I'd do to get enough charge to boot at least. I would connect my positive from the charger to one of the battery connectors reds, and connect the negative to one of the blacks (obviously lol). Give it 5 minutes only, then swap your negative charger wire onto the other black of the nexus. Give it 5 minutes only again.
Then swap your positive charger wire over to the other red of the nexus and repeat the process, keeping the positive on that red and connecting the negative to each black for 5 minutes.
You only need enough charge to boot, so this will be fine. Also, keeping it to 5 minutes each keeps it safe.
An even better way to do it would be wait until tomorrow until I can get a hold of a multimeter and i would check to see how the pairing is, then you could do it without the guesswork. But if you can't wait, I've told you the way that i would do it.

I'm trying to be patient for almost a week now, so one day (or more, if you need them) will not be a problem Take as much time as you need, I'm already thankfull that you are willing to look into it!

Again, thank you already in advance, I hope this gets me out of trouble. What an inacceptable bug, bah.
One additional question though, if you don't mind. What are your thoughts of using the stripped usb cable an my laptop to deliver that little bit of battery juice? I'm good with my hands, can replace every part of your bike and am able place a new smartphone screen with my eyes closed, but I just don't know anything about the real hardcore electronics

It is not a bug. Your tablet has entered a sleep mode to prevent t the battery from being damaged. I have previously posted the procedure to enable it to charge and wake again. Search through my recent posts for the fix- I unfortunately can't link it right now due to time constraints.
ETA: Plug your N7 into the charger and immediately press power and volume down to get into the bootloader. Once there, use the volume key to scroll to Power Off Device and then press the power button. After it powers off, unplug it and then plug it back in. It should then charge normally.

I'm sorry, but this is a bug and not a feature of the device protecting you. If the device runs out of battery, it should do what every other tablet and smartphone does: shut down. And it should shut down 'way before' the battery is completely out of power, so that it still has a fair amount of battery capacity to at least once initate startup, notice that the battery is too low to continue and shut down properly. Of course, if you try to restart the device several times whilst it doesn't have any battery power left, then you are damaging your device. But than you are an idiot as well
Look at wat happens when you are working on your N7 and power comes to 0%. Indeed: it will shut down properly and you will be able to charge it without any problems. However, if battery comes to about 10% and you do not shut it down manually but leave it just sitting there, the device will do what it normally does: it goes to (deep?) sleep. However, even deep sleep consumes battery and inevitably you will reach the point where the battery is at 0% (seen by the android device). But instead of waking up and shutting down the device properly, it just stays into its deep sleep, consuming power and finally undercharging your battery making the device totally irresponsive. This is what I call, a bug.
I know now that I should either shut down or recharge my N7 when I come to the point of 10-15% battery. But hey, once you learn that, it is too late, this is why I'm here

Thank you very kindly for your help, but as stated before, I have tried everything already. Including a whole evening trying to get the timing right to see the android bootloader following the solution you mention. But it doesn't give anything but frustration. So I understand why you point to that solution, but that is one of the first solutions that comes up if you google my N7 phenotype. Again, thank you kindly, but for now I do not see any other solution than trying to get an inital voltage in that battery manually.
Best regards,
Erwin

did anyone charge it manually out of the nexus ? I've verified that the black is - and the red is + with a multimeter. battery reads .47 with multimeter. If you guys are going to charge it 5 minutes per pair, definitely get a multimeter to read the positive and negative coming out of the 5v chargers.. also, make sure that it's about 5 volts cuz some are about 6? I dont' know if having too high of a voltage will fry it.. i do know from experience that some usb chargers are 5 and some are 6 volts and some are even slightly more. I'm talking about getting a transformer that goes from usb to the circular out put head..
Same problem here. Someone on another thread was suspecting the magnetic cover causing problem and I'm using one too. Anyone having this problem NOT using a magnetic cover?
I know this is thread is a few months old.

I have a similar problem and my n7 has never had a case.
Update
I hooked the battery up to a usb port using the out side read and black wires, red was + black was - charged for about 1 minute via pc usb power while monitoring with a dmm. the tablet now charges normally.
Charge manually

I did charged the battery manually.
For about 1 minute for each pair of red/black.
Not to bump an old thread but manually charging indeed fixes this problem. Used a multimeter to take a reading from one nexus 7 and then cut up an old usb and hooked it up to the ends of the multimeter and placed them on the first 2 points. Charging manually up to about 3.7ish should be enough to accept a charge.
Thanks guys saved buying a new battery.
i have a bit of life after manually charging, is it important to do both pairs of black and red? I have 2 batteries and now the nexus flashes an empty battery logo up when i hold the power button, its better than before as nothing came up at all but still wont boot up
I just charged my battery up manually using a proper Li-Po battery charging unit, left it charging at 2.5A until it hit 4.0V. No problems.
I did not charge up both pairs. I believe this is unnecessary: see first image in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2311799
The pairs of red and black are actually soldered together, so it doesn't make a difference which pin you apply the voltage to.
I would be worried about charging the battery directly with a 5.0V supply (ie. USB voltage). Don't do it if you can avoid it.
If at any point when charging a battery directly you notice it getting hot, stop immediately.
External charging nexus 7 batteries
Use the black - and the red + wires to charge .Charge the outer red and black wires ,I use a 5 volt charger since these batteries are rated at 3.7 v + or - .5v Charge the batteries to a voltage reading of 4.2 volts this will be a full charge. Please Note you will be charging this battery with out a protection over voltage or temp sensor system. If the battery is bad ,will not take charge due to damaged cells, or is overheated while charging they will burst apart.Charging with out protection circuits can damage batteries and also harm yourself. You do this at your own RISK.

Thanks guys!!
You saved my Nexus 7!
I charged the battery with my computer's usb port and a multimeter connected, let it charge to 3.90V (with power), and it booted up again
Now I have to get it to 100%, as it still shuts down after booting..

Cannot recharge the battery

Hi,
Cannot recharge the battery on my Samsung Focus v1.3. Replaced it with totaly new battery (also for samsung focus made by samsung). Was working for 3 months and again cannot recharge it. Any solution help with this?
Recharger is fine, I'm using it on my Xperia Arc S with success.
ps. the icon for recharging is flashing nonstop while being plugged to usb
I had the same thing happen . I ended up getting a new one from att but b4 I sent it back I figured out it would charge from my laptop just fine . Its worth a shot , also try diff cords if you have any my focus was weird it liked a Motorola cord more then the Samsung Lol . Good luck

Thanks for suggestions. I've read that it might be faulty microUSB port, and some pins (or just 1) is not connecting nor is sticking to the other one resulting in this. I cannot replace my phone as it's not under guarantee service anymore. I will try different coords tho.
Hearing chimes
Even when the phone's plugged in to the charger are you hearing it chime like you've unplugged it? There's some kind of charging bug 1.3 Focuses get; some threads in this forum about it. I had that problem, wouldn't charge and it kept chiming. Got a new battery and didn't help. I installed the Battery Discharger app to reset the battery. Unplugged it, ran the app and the phone kept chiming, threw up a lot of alerts, but I just kept canceling them. The phone got really hot but eventually the battery ran all the way down. Then when I plugged it in, it started charging again. That was 2 months ago and haven't had a single problem since.
hear no sounds when charging, not chiming at all, just blinking charging icon.
I followed the way you described, but it didnt help, damn icon still blinking.
This is what I see with connected to PC USB:

Currently my battery has charged to 41% after 3h of charging and cannot rise it above this state, and the icon is still blinking, without any sounds.
Had a similar problem with 2 batteries (posted on a different section - accessories, if I'm not mistaken).
One day, the battery just didn't charge anymore. I tried everything (outlet, pc, laptop, different chargers) but nothing helped, the battery just wouldn't charge. Luckily, I also bought (along with 3 other spare Chinese batteries) an external charger. The battery charged perfectly in it.
So, I recommend an external charger, like this one. Providing of course your battery is not actually dying or already dead.
Please bare in mind, using different charges not specifically fitted for your phone may affect your battery (phone). I noticed that Nokia 920 charger charges my Focus but not the way around. I think voltage may be different, but I haven't checked.
Thanks for reply.
Managed to charge my battery to 100% with the USB - PC cable, took it a whole nite. I'm confused.... now it's not blinking, just stable icon showing power connected to it. Gonna use the battery discharger, wonder how much time it will take to discharge, then will recharge again.
Discharged it after 2:30mins, is this good result or? (Default settings on the application)
Anyway.... now I got another wall charger, the phone's icon still blinkig durring charging, and it's very slow, so far it took about 15mins to charge 5% of the battery.
How much it takes you to fully charge your Samsung Focus? Ok I found that in manual it says around 4h, mine charged to 100% in 3h15min.
2 hours 30 min sounds pretty good, with all the things Battery Discharger app throws at the battery (vibration, primes, etc.). I usually wait until my battery's pretty run down before I run the app, so can't say for sure. 3:15 to recharge sounds about right. Dunno if this bug is firmware dependent; but can say I've had no problems charging with Dynamics ROM with updates
Maybe I was too much alerted, looks like everything is fine, except for that blinking (or maybe it's by default while charging?) icon.
Glad you got it sorted. Maybe you charged in a high power USB port (regular ones have 500 mAh) and that did the trick (not in my case, though).
My battery takes 3h to charge and now lasts 70% of the original duration (about 2 years later). So what you got, seems to be a good result.
Now, back into your original issue, I also found it here. I still believe it is a communication error between the charging circuit of the phone and the battery. A bug, if you prefer. Both the phone and the battery are fine, but they just can't agree on the power needed. And now I remembered too, another time had the same blinking as you did, but didn't care since I knew the battery can actually be recharged. In my case though, it seemed to be even worse. It was charging for 5 seconds then not charging for a few then again charging... and so on. However, after 3 hours the battery wasn't charged at all so I went on with the external charger and that fixed it.
So, for anyone who experiences battery not charging and the blinking icon: the battery can either be charged in an external charger of in a computer's USB port (although that may not always work).

I had the same issue - Took it to a cell phone repair shop and they re-attached the plug in port - it got loose over time- Charges fine now
Its the pins that connect the micro USB that's why there are some cords that won't transfer data but they will charge just fine . Just keep using a computer USB port an you will be fine . Also the charging is slower but hey at least you can use your phone or you could just buy my focus and I have an extra battery from my lil episode lol
