Dual boot nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Soon we will start having cyanogenmod version for nexus 4 and at the beginning it will be unstable so I was wondering if any of you tried to install a dual boot on your nexus 4
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.drx2.bootmanager.lite
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.projectlense.bootmenu
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792955

Duel booting is very common on samsung phone s1,s2,s3 implemented into the kernel
but i haven't seen it on a nexus before.

Well Bootmanager lite is compatible with the previous nexuses

I have Boot Manager Pro, I will test it once I get my Nexus 4.

anybody try this yet?

Boot Manager Pro doesn't support Jellybean (yet).

so does anything work to dual boot yet?

There's a multiboot loader available for Nexus 7.
Maybe it will be ported to Nexus 4 some day...

is this possible on the nexus 4?

The creator will not do it because he does not have a nexus 4. So we have to do it ourselves, we can use his sources.

So how do we build it? are there instructions?

I wish I knew what I was doing to do something like this, but can anyone actually do this? If it is done for the nexus 7, I would imagine it should be able to be done for the 4?

I will begin trying to port this for the mako device next days, but I will have the Nexus 4 device in a few weeks only, so I would need some testers. Next weekendI'll post more details about my work if it goes well.

Adaptation of multirom
Hello,
I'm new on xda, but I have often used your tutorial to update my galaxy s to the latest version of android.
I am a newbie here but I know read tutorials, install and test firmware.

Thanks for giving your help. However I just grab sources from mako kernel and multiboot, didn't begin working on it yet, tomorrow I'll try. First step making kernel having kexec boot method.
Edit : have to dl linux and reinstall my bootloader, a upgrade of my windows made it go away. :s That's ironic, a broken dualboot on my PC prevents me to work on dualboot for the phone. Anyway will begin working on that this evening.

Please do update on this if you get it working. I would like to dual boot Ubuntu and my stock phone OS.

Of course, I'll ask a thread in the dev section when I'l need some testing. I don't promise any result, but think it will be easy to port, just need to spend some time. Will begin tonight.

Anyone planning to port Ubuntu Touch to the Note 10.1. It seems like any device that can run CM 10.1 can run Ubuntu. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting
I think we need a multi boot boot-loader maybe the method like on the nexus 7 IT Rocks can mutiboot several os ..

A multi boot would definitely be nice but you should be able to backup and restore to previous Android as it keeps the custom recovery.
There's a how-to guide for porting on wiki.ubuntu if someone is capable of doing it:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting
Ooo this sounds very cool. I tried to read the wiki but my head almost exploded trying to understand the first bits. So I doubt I am the one to get it. lol!
Ok! According to Ubuntu post on nexus 10 forum they discovered that the Ubuntu touch is actually a Cm10.1 rom with Ubuntu over it and they say that porting is as simple as porting cm to other devices

Can't find Android 5.0 "L" Developer Preview image for Nexus 10?

That's because you are chasing a ghost. It doesn't exist (at least for now). So far, the only available preview images are for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013). There's some speculation on whether the Nexus 10 will even get the official L version when it comes out. I sure do hope so, but I'm trying not to get said hopes too high.

These are just the binaries. I believe he was referring to the complete preview image, like what's available for the N5 and N7 (2013), found here: http://developer.android.com/preview/setup-sdk.html.
So how do I use this for the n10? just install the base n7 build and then flash the blobs you linked?

NO! DO NOT flash images that are meant for other devices onto this device (or any device for that matter). You can easily (read: COMPLETELY) brick your device by flashing a kernel meant for another device. My advice is just be patient for either Google to release it, or for a custom ROM to come along for the N10.

but that's just it, how does one learn to bake roms for a particular device? - isn't it a matter of compiling the rom from aosp with the appropriate blobs?

[Q] when we get android 8 for our nexus 4?

hi friends,
do you know, our nexus 4s get android Oreo by nitrogen or lineage or other roms? if yes, I know stable android Oreo version will release mid august, when we get custom rom?
we can't know this
When it comes fyi: asking for an ETA is kinda rude on xda
wait till October or November probably for a decently stable ROM
Excitedly expect first android Oreo Rom for nexus 4 on september 17
and first 32bit snapdragon android oreo port, fully work
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73494285&postcount=1356
so, now we have very big chance for our nexus 4...
and first nexus 5 android oreo port, booting and wifi working now, one similiar devices too
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73538437&postcount=6286
for now has boot problem but after all the first nexus 4 oreo

I have compiled android 8 and I managed to get it booting(lots of changes on kernel and device tree). Need a lot of work but mako probably will get a fully fuctional android 8 rom.
good news
thanks for good news,
and maybe co-operation accelerates this work

Just for my own curiosity, how do you know what changes need to be made to the device and kernel tree? Do you use officially supported device/kernel trees as a reference, or is there a guideline posted somewhere?

Well, you can either try to build it yourself instead of waiting for Google or someone else to do it. Devs on xda do have a life outside of building custom rooms unfortunately so all we can do is wait it out. Plus, 9.0 isn't great unless you love apple wanna be os's

I'm not expecting a custom rom because their is no source code to build from. I'm just wondering why we don't have Dev Previews when it's apparent that they are building code for P on our device.

It's still in preview stage. I'm running it on my pixel and really don't like it.
Nexus will get it's turn when it's stable. We probably still won't see a beta, but when they finish making it an ugly iOS clone they'll roll out like any other update, then we all can go back to flashing the same roms with different names.
I hate being a flasaholic

I know how that feels ten roms a week because you can't find one that meets all the features you want.
As far that I'm aware, neither the 6p nor the 5x will receive Android P officially from Google. Support will end on both devices with Oreo 8.1.x , other than receiving security maintenance updates and whatnot.

Bugs as in it boots but doesn't fully work? Or bugs as in it won't build? I actually just finished a build but I have no way of testing if it even boots (my usb port seems to be shot, it only charges and won't connect via adb or fastboot).
If any brave souls wish to flash it and let me know what's broken (or if it even boots at all), I'll share a link.
I could test it if you mind to share

How complicated is it to slim down the builds as much as possible?
I don't see needing all the extra TouchWiz crap that this device barely supports and had survived using Link2SD for storage. Something stable supporting at least basic apps is all I need, and most of those (Gmail, Chrome, etc) are now available from play store.

Hi, my advice is starting by taking sources from other variants (you can find them in GitHub S3NEO organization) and editing sources by starting from that base. For the kernel, it shouldn't be difficult to make a defconfig by always looking in matisse and millet ones. I advice you to start from Android 9 (lineage-16.0 branches) since they are the most stable. If you are really interested to work, you can write me in Telegram (same username as xda profile) and I can write you something more about what you should do.
Android 8, 9 or 10 will be nice, but right now I will be happy with Android 5. Are there any ROMs for degas higher than 4.4.4?
Are there any true Android 5 or Android 7 ROMs for this device?
