[Q] My G2 is running EDGE only...

hello, i just bought a week ago and htc g2/ vision, had it unlocked so i can have another sim card thats not tmobiles in.
i live in el salvador and my carrier is tigo and calls are perfectly fine and all but data connections are only edge! and i have no idea why??? i also have a x10 mini and i use the same apn and it connects to 3g
anyone know why and how to fix it?

Did you check to make sure what GSM frequencies the carrier uses (sorry not familiar with El Salvador)? This sounds very similar to people trying to use G2's on AT&T / iPhones on T-mobile. Not all GSM carriers use the same frequencies for their service. If voice is working, but 3G data is not, this is very likely the issue. For example, AT&T operates both 2g and 3g on 850/1900, whereas T-mobile operates 2g on 850/1900 and 3G on 1700/2100; hence why voice and Edge can work, but 3G cannot.
Poking around a little, the X10 mini world phone version has an 850/900/1800/1900 for edge and 1900/2100 frequency radio for 3G data connection, although there are AT&T versions with slightly different bands too, which you may have I'm not sure.
The G2 runs on T-mobile in the US and has a 850/900/1800/1900 for edge and 1700/2100 radio for 3G data.
All according to Wikipedia from what I can scrounge up right now.
BTW I feel proud that I did this research lol. Enlightening.

I think tigo is at 850, is there anything I can do at this point?

no, you cant add more mhz bands. You should have checked this out before you bought it.

If Tigo doesn't run 1700/2100 3g, there isn't anything you can do short of selling your G2 and buying a European Desire Z (same as G2) with the proper frequencies assuming you want the same type of phone. Shoulda checked this out lol just cuz it has a SIM slot doesn't mean it "just works" haha. sorry!

Sell it, buy the canadian bell Desire Z (A7275) and you'll be fine. Its your only option if you want to keep the same phone with 3g data.

Well the USA, Canada, and Euro ones all have different bands, depending on the carriers they are generally made for. The issue with the Euro ones can be that they don't come with English out of the box either

Hm? Well yes the UK ones are made for whatever bands the UK carriers run on.

Just how hard is it to have a G2 world phone? Can you add all possible bands?

I believe that the Canadian/European Desire Z is the world phone edition which carries band support for all GSM bands. It is the USA T-Mobile G2 that carries support for the GSM bands specifically for the US market. Correct me if I am wrong.

No, you can't just add bands to a phone.

I also got the Samsung Galaxy Note, wow! that's a very big screen, no problems in putting in my pocket.

After checking *#2263# I can see there's 5 bands for 3G! 850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100!

My little pad have no problem ,I check everything include the screen issue that report by someone .

So it should work on T-Mobile 3G with that WCDMA 1700/2100.

I dunno, I'm in HKG right now, I'll transit in US this Sunday and test it if its working the Tmobile 3G at 1700

No, there are a lot of info that Galaxy Note with LTE is not released yet and will be available exclusively for the korean market

So does all the note possibly have the penta band as we are seeing in tocache's phone, or is it specific to the hong kong models? I think I also saw some who bought from the Netherlands also have this penta band...
Could those of you that purchased this phone from other places/countries check the service mode menu to see if this is the case with all the Gnotes? Thanks in advance!

Its been established (more or less) that the phone claims to support 1700/2100 AWS 3G in the service menu. The problem is getting the phone to actually connect to the network and not bork itself in the process.
Out of the box the phone does not work with T-mobile's 3G/HSPA+ network. It may be possible with a modified 'modem' but so far nobody has modified a Note specific modem to attempt to get it to work.
We also need to know what radio chipset the phone is using. It could be the SKY7706 or the SKY7704. The 7704 supports Tmo. The 7706 doesn't. We need a teardown or analysis of the modem (if possiblee) to determine what its using.

How to 'unlock' for U.S. GSM networks (Tmobile and AT&T)

Does anyone know how to make the Razr M work with U.S. GSM networks?
(I know that it works for GSM networks internationally, but it does not seem to work for SIM cards from U.S. GSM networks--the phone says "the SIM card is unrecognized".)

I have done this personally and it works for voice and text, data only worked very little on EDGE. YMMV

This just adds the ability to use U.S. GSM networks, right? It doesn't alter/hinder the ability of the phone to use GSM networks internationally? I hope to still use it when traveling.

Sadly, I am unable to answer that. I believe some have tried it (or were going to try it), and I haven't seen anyone mention issues thus far.

Heh... No, but can be reverted. From my traveling experience, you'll have to flash back the original Verizon radio when traveling internationally or you'll get no signal.
Flashing radios back and forth is fairly simple with fastboot once you get used to it... May not be great if you travel a lot though.

Theres a better option to fully unlock US GSM Radios on RAZR M, you can get 4G in AT&T and EDGE in Tmobile. You will need Retail VRZ Radio and some tools to modify NV Radio File and remove the lock motorola placed for these bands. Search for DFS Tools, Motorola Prerelease Mobile Drivers 5.2.1 32 Bit. and NV radio Razr unlock in other forums, sorry that i cant give you direct link.

I'm currently selling my unlocked razr m on swappa.com under the same user name, I get full H+ in my area on AT&T with it.

Do you have LTE menu option on your One? (not EE customers)

I am on Three UK, and although LTE is not rolled out yet, I was surprised that the LTE menu options do not appear at all. For example, why wouldn't I have this option in case I roamed to a foreign country that provides LTE to roamers.
In the network options I only have
WCDMA only
GSM/WCDMA auto
I know those on EE have another option for LTE.
Supposedly LTE and 3G SIMs are the same. In fact Three will provide free LTE access later this year automatically and without any administrative changes.
Could others confirm, if they are not on an LTE network, whether they see the LTE option on the phones network settings?

I think the phone only shows the option to turn LTE on or off if it detects LTE on your network so it should appear automatically once Three launch LTE

I agree! I decompiled Settings.apk of the HTC One and the network selection option uses RadioInfo class to determine what should be shown on the menu. In fact I can even see CDMA & EV-DO there.

No. LTE bands in the US are way different compared to the LTE bands all around the world. I'm not sure about LTE Cat 3 though.

In reviews I keep seeing HSPA and LTE versions, which led me to believe there are models without the chip needed for 4G.
There is no answer on this though so I'm not going to rush to buy one until I know.

SIM-free from p4u using Vodafone Italy SIM, in an area not LTE covered

The LTE Menu is also available here
It´s not depend on the SIM/Provider i think

I'm not showing lte version on my 3 Handset ? Which is worrying because I took out my new 3 contact for the 3 lte upgrade

Gt-i9500 vs Gt-i9505 frequencies

Can anyone verify the difference in frequencies that each phone is capable of? I am here in the USA on AT&T and last year bought a GT-I9305 and found out I could not get high speed 3G coverage. So I bought a GT-I9300 and everything works fine. Out of all the frequencies I needed 1900mhz for HSPA 3G. I am suspecting these models to be similar.
If you dial this code number *#197328640# into your phone dial pad you can get to a hidden service menu. (note: use the lower left button to go back each time you select something, otherwise you have to dial the whole number again.)
On my International SGS3 (GT-i9300) I can go in here and select different data frequencies (I leave mine on Auto) by going to Debug Screen-> Phone Control-> Network Control-> Band Selection-> then when you select one of the options, there with be a * next to each frequency that the phone is capable of. Just looking to see which version has what frequencies. Thanks!

I am thinking the Gt-i9500 will be the one I'll want for USA and AT&T. I just wanted to confirm ahead of time this. I learned the hard way on the 9300 vs 9305.

Tried the code twice on my i9500... no dice.

I am curious as well, moving to ATT, and while they say the 32GB GS4 is coming soon, I don't know what soon is.

If you look at both phones, they both support the same freqs. I'm on H+ with my i9500, same sort of speed and signal as I got with my international Xperia Z, SGS3, SGS2.. etc.

Hi guys, I'm running a GT-i9500 on Bell mobility in Canada which uses same bands as AT&T. It is set to WCDMA 1900 Band 2, but the phone reverts to 3G at rest and goes up to H+ as soon as anything that requires data is launched. Is this normal behavior? I get great HSPA+ speeds too!

So hey, I was wondering the i9500 frequencies too. I live in Finland and I want the Exynos Octa variant. I guess all the 2Gs and 3Gs etc works just perfectly in here?

Why not just check on GSMArena?

because I have in the past found conflicting information on different phone models, and its usually better and more reliable to get information from people who actually own the phone and use it every day..
