[Q] change us bought N7 to French/France? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I purchased an N7 16g for my dad who is French and lives in France, but I live in the US and bought it at Walmart.
At first glance I see an option to select UK English and Spanish but not French.
Is there a way to make this unit work as a French one? Is he going to have problems within the Google store? I was trying to do a good thing, not get him a poisoned gift.
EDIT: looks like the limited choice is only in the quick setup wizard. Later you can choose more options in settings.
Not sure if there will be a problem telling it to use the French Play Store

These tablets have no sort of region locking or similar limitations whatsoever. You will not have any problems using it in France with French language.

Language list

Hi,
i'm considering getting a Galaxy Tab, but there is a huge price difference between Amazon.co.uk (~560 euro, 1 year warranty) and local shops here in Slovakia (670-740 euro, 2 year warranty).
My question is if the version sold at Amazon.co.uk does come with central european localization (Czech, Slovak, Hungarian) or not. Before someone says "Ask Amazon.co.uk" - i did it, and they pretty much said in their own style that they don't know and sent me the link to Samsung UK website, which of course doesn't have this information.
So if any owner of a Galaxy Tab from Amazon.co.uk could make screenshot(s) of languages in the Settings>Language & Keyboard>Select language menu (or something like that), i would be very happy.
Thanks
Language support is not a dealbreaker for me, but could be a major factor for a resale value here in Slovakia.
Hey,
sorry, I can't answer your original question, but I might can give you a hint... I bought my Tab from T-Mobile in Hungary. I attached a screenshot from the localization settings about the languages you can choose (to be more precise the screenshot shows only the part of the list you probably are interested in).
As you can see it's quite strange: all the central-european languages appears (polish, romanian, hungarian, etc.) but I can't find Slovakian language, while there seems to be 2 instances of Slovenian. You will know better than me whether it's a typo or I'm just under-educated not knowing Slovenians have two languages... BTW Czech language is also present, which is quite close to Slovakian as far as I know, maybe that can be an option, too.
Bottom line: if this rom is ok for you, you can go for it later, no matter where you buy the tab. Hope this helps somewhat in your decision...
Update:
Ok, I'm an idiot, no matter how strange it sounds for me, "Slovencina" does mean slovak language. Conclusion: Google before you write Pls skip that part of the above post...
Slovencina (Slovenska Republika) = Slovak, Slovenian (Slovenia) = Slovenian. I know the versions sold here in central Europe have those languages, as you just shown me, but i want to know about the version sold at amazon.co.uk, because flashing ROM (even a official one) equals to lost warranty, and i don't want that, even if the warranty is in UK.
In the end, i decided to buy it from Amazon.co.uk. 100 euros is not something i can walk over, even if it means 1 year extra warranty.
I was also thinking about Archos 70 8GB - but it's nowhere to buy (Amazon is out of stock, Expansys can't confirm any date) or Commtiva FM6/N700, but that one has serious video playback limitations.
So in the end, i decided to go Galaxy Tab route, i hope i won't be dissapointed.
PS: Fun note, i ordered Galaxy Tab with one PC game at once. Guess what Amazon did ? They will send 2 items as 2 separate packages. They love to do this, they did it with nearly every order i did so far .

[SOLVED] UK phone in AUS, can I un-UK it?

Hi Folks, I've scoured the forums but couldn't find anything on this already...
I got a phone sent to Australia from Handtec in the UK. I expected it to be UK regionalised, but thought that I could apply a WWE rom and change it. So much for that idea - it came with 1.32.405.6 and I applied the WWE of the same version, but still get "English (United Kingdom)" and some Euro languages only. Also the spoken-directions is enabled for the UK and it suggests I pay for the Australian one...
Is there a way I can set this as an Aus phone?
Much Thanks
Root and flash CM 6.1, that should give you a generic ROM . the navigation issue is that with Google NAV?
The x.x.405.x ROMs are stock european firmwares. The only Australian firmware is the one you get from Vodafone, and is branded. This is because Voda has carrier exclusivity here.
I got mine from Clove, and it came with the WWE ROM. I also got a free one month worldwide premium navigation from the Locations app. I downloaded the Australia map and I can get spoken driving directions. After one month though, I'll have to buy the directions license if I want to keep on using premium navigation. This is similar to everyone who bought their phones SIM-free. Google Navigation also now works in Australia thanks to their last update. I tried and works fine one mine, and is free.
You could try MoreLocale 2 from the market if you really want English (AUS) as the locale.
I installed the morelocale2 app which gave me more choice including English (Australia). I have a Vodafone branded DHD which came with with English (German) only and French/German.
I still havent removed the other Voda crap like Voda 360 music store or whatever that is.
PS: It was really annoying to see German language videos by default, on Youtube !!
I have installed MoreLocale 2 and it's the next best thing to having it like that natively, thank you! Content and searches are much more relevant now
I'll see how I go with Google's nav app, though I hear it could be worth buying Navigon or CoPilot... anyway, that's for another day.
Cheers
Herb

Question to those who bought from amazon.de

If you bought your phone from amazon.de web site, was it intended for german market or is amazon re selling units for other world market? There was an issue with guys purchasing Samsung Galaxy 2 from amazon.com where they find out that their unit was meant for Chilean or Vietnamese market. I am going to purchase from amazon.de and want it to be with german firmware version.
Can you please check? Thank you

Initially on bootup it is in German. At the wizard press the bottom right button. Select English. Then that's it its an English OS.
Some issues with the market. Its suggestion German ones to me like amazon app and google translate. Fix will be easy.
The instructions are EU and first language is English. Also note it comes with an EU plug.
Also some of the pre-defined browser shortcuts are for .de websites - notably Samsung. Again no problem.
A similar "localisation" occurs wherever you buy it from.

Pre-ordering the Nexus 4 from outside of the available countries

I live in Israel, and I can't order a Nexus 4 through Google Play to where I live. But I will be in Germany on the 17th of November. Currently when I go to Google Play to try and order a Nexus 4 to Germany I get the message that I can't do it from my country (Israel). Is it possible to pre-order a Nexus 4 to Germany from outside of Germany with Google Play?
Yes you could use a VPN or proxy in Germany to connect to the Play Store. Then order it from there.

Shipping Address and Billing Address doesn't have to be the same, they both just have to be in the same country.

I will transit through Frankfurt on 15 or 16 November. Is there any Nexus 4 available at electric store in the shopping area.
Or Can I order and pick it up at the Frankfurt Airport (I have no Schengen Visa)?
Language options?
Hey guys,
I also plan to get it from Germany via a friend living there. The only thing I'm not sure about is whether the Nexuses (Nexi? ) sold in Germany have Hungarian language available? I'm perfectly ok with an English-speaking phone, but these days I started using voice search in Google Now a lot and it won't understand Hungarian proper names with English enabled...
Do you know anything about this? How are other Nexus devices in this respect?
Thanks!

I'm doing the same, but a bit later. It would be sweet to pick it up in FRA if possible.

yes it is, but it will be the LG NEXUS and about 599 euro .... (200 euro more than the google version which you can ONLY buy on the playstore)
Actually the LG Nexus version will have LTE.... the google version has only the chip, but I read it was missing the modem in the hardware, so it is not functional)

Belsimpel only delivers in the Netherlands and Belgium.
MediaMarkt Nordhorn already has it. The webshop doesn't (4-7 days), but the shop itself does.
Anyway, yes you can just change the language (I do it the other way around, I'm from the Netherlands and buy my phones in Germany.).
Thanks, talked to 5 Media-Markts in my near and they said all "no we dont has it" ...grml, now orderd online and its on his way, bought it from "talkthisway"
