hey guys, so i know just a few posts below me there's a topic about when 4.2 will come to the N7. But what i'm wondering is if anyone has gotten their hands on the 4.2 GAPPS or anything of the sort, such as the new 4.2 keyboard and the 4.2 camera (not that the camera would be much use on an N7). I have the 4.2 GAPPS, keyboard and camera running on my S3, can i just use those same .zip files and flash them on my N7? or does it not just work that way.

Be careful mate. I flashed the 4.2 gapps and once i rebooted i was constantly getting force closes on all the apps that got flashed.
My device was a real mess. I have not tried the separate apps like keyboard etc so i cant comment on them.
Edit...i did not flash the ones that the fellow member linked you to in the post above.
The ones in that link say the for any androud 4.1 device so you should be ok.

Ah, I assumed the OP already had the apps in the link I posted as he said about his S3 and the thread linked was in the S3 forum.
So yeah, make sure you're using the apps from the link and you should be fine as the post says its for any device running 4.1 or over. If you're unsure you could always perform a nandroid backup beforehand in case anything does go wrong.
yeah, that link is where I got the GAPPS from. I guess I didn't see the part about being able to flash it on anything. lol

Why is this thread here?
There's 2 main reasons really. The first reason is to stop the development threads getting filled with questions which have nothing to do with the thread they're posted in. That then makes the thread go off-topic which is not what a development thread is there for.
The second reason is because there are too many repetitive questions being asked. The main problem with that is the fact that other users will sometimes attack the OP and 'flaming' them.
The main way which this thread will help to stop that happening is by helping you out as much as possible, while being in a friendly environment.

No-one can answer this for you. We all have our favorites, so just test different ones out and see which you prefer.

While it's recommended that you always do a full wipe before installing, you HAVE to do a full wipe before installing your first ROM. If you don't, you N7 will not boot up.

You need a patched PowerHAL. On a very basic level, after a while the stock google PowerHAL likes to revert a lot of settings to stock. This includes the CPU clock speeds, etc. I got my PowerHAL from here

And I flashed the nofreq one. It will NOT change your frequency, ever. After you flash the PowerHAL, use your favourite app (I like tricksterMOD, but support your devs by buying their apps) to set your kernel settings, and set them on boot. This is the easiest way to get settings to stick.
OR
You could use an init.d script to set a maximum clock speed. This way, you will need a kernel/ROM that supports boot.img.

No chips are created equally. Some can take more OC than others. It is fact that too much OC can shorten the life of your CPU. A general rule I have seen used a lot is to not go around 20-30% over the stock speed. That is around 1.5GHz which most kernels get up to. However, a lot of devices can take more and will go higher. See for yourself, just don't be stupid

No. Probably not. Chances are you're on an old bootloader, which has a bug that doesn't allow you to get into recovery from the BL without being connected to a computer. So, connect it to your computer, hold vol down/power for 10 secs to go back to the bootloader. You can go to the recovery from there.

You can't drag/drop in recovery between your N7 and a PC. Either boot into android and transfer your files, or use ADB while in recovery.
"adb push nameoffile /data/media" or wherever your things are (beware of how many 0's there are on your sdcard).

Ask Google. It’s got to do with the multiuser feature brought to android in 4.2. Ever user has their own folder, so you might have /0 and /1. If you're having troubles with it in recovery, I would update to the latest TWRP.

You need to be running completely stock to update. So, you need to either flash a stock ROM or the stock image.

No. Its the tegra smartdimmer. When your device is playing a video, the Tegra 3 automatically bumps up the contrast and dims the backlight, to save battery. This is a feature. To turn it off, either use a script or tricksterMOD (which is much easier).

When you flash a new ROM/kernel, you need to give it a few battery cycles before battery is reported accurately. So, flash the new kernel, drain it (not necessarily to 0%), charge it fully, drain it again, charge, then play around. Do not complain about battery or anything without doing a few cycles first.

Usually you can probably dirty flash. But if it causes problems, don't report them. Best thing to do is to reflash the ROM with a full wipe and see if bugs persist. I always wipe when changing to a different ROM, but when updating a ROM i don't wipe usually.

I would say no. Because, if there is a problem you have sort of voided your warranty. I like to keep my devices for a month without rooting/unlocking them in case there is a fault or something. You should do the same, I’d hate to have a brand new device, root it and then find a fault and have voided your warranty. Companies can be sneaky and can probably try to avoid fixing your device under warranty if you tamper with it. However you could always relock and revert to stock, but it is much easier to be patient and make sure there are no problems
[SIZE=+1]Q16: Will rooting my tablet make it faster/awesomer and have improve battery life?[/SIZE]
Short answer: no.
Long answer: nope.
Rooting alone will not change anything relateds to battery or performance. However custom ROMs, kernels and other mods will change things. For example flashing a more optimised kernel might improve performance, especially if you overclock it. Similarly, underclocking generally improves battery life. Of course it depends on what crap you have on your device too, but that's the general idea. Usually in the OP of a ROM/kernel thread, and in the comments you can get a good idea on whether it is optimized for battery, performance or a combination.

*A significant "first" in development for a device. This is something which took considerable time/effort and is generally accepted by developers to be non-trivial.
*Kernels which are built with beneficial changes that are not simply pulled from other kernels already available.
*Tools and utilities with a clear purpose, and which are well-made, and useful to users. They should have an element of originality, either in purpose or through significant improvement in the means of operation.
*Significant port of a ROM from one device to another, giving enhanced features or functionality to the users of the target device.

I got my nexus 7 yesterday and updated it immediately to 4.2.1. All good so far. I start using and all goes well until I remember "this thing has the swipe keyboard, right?". I start swiping and nothing happens. Check the settings, it is on. Boot the device, no effect. Enable and disable the thing and boot the tablet a few times more, still no go.
At this point I decided I'll fix that later and made another user account for my GF to use. I immediately notice that the swipe typing works on that account just fine. I check the settings and looks like it's on by default. I go back to my own profile and check the settings again, but still no go.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the tip. I tried that, but settings crashes every time I try to enable the PC layout keyboard.
I'm gonna do a factory wipe since the tablet is still almost on default anyway.
edit: Ok did reset and everything works just fine now. Now just wait for play store to install all the apps back
I have just got my new Nexus 7 and I want to root my N7 with Wug's root toolkit. I was thinking if I just don't check the box: flash custom recovery. Can I then just do the OTA updates? Because I don't want to install a Custom Rom.

Just got a stock unrooted unmodded N7 32GB with build JZO54K. On first boot it found the OTA update to 4.2.1 so I happily accepted the update. A few minutes into the upgrade process I get the "dead" droid with the triangle, guess something went wrong. It boots up again into JZO54K and works fine.
I can force another attempt at the update by stopping and clearing the data for Google Services Framework and searching for updates again, but with the same results.
Am I missing something? Would like to try pure AOSP before going CM on this little beauty

Root Nexus 7 must flash the CWM or other recoveries? In the menu of "Google Nexus 7 TOOLKIT V4.0.0", I found the button "Root" and the check "and flash recovery...". Does it mean I can root the machine without flash any recovery? Thanks.

If you've only rooted you can do ota's. Just as long as you don't change ANYTHING in the /system partition like installing flashable zips

Sure its completely stock? If it is, it should work... If you be got any more troubles ask Google
If you want pure AOSP there are ROMs for that you can flash, if you root

You can root by having all the right superuser binaries etc
But its easier to flash the recovery, and then flash the latest superuser/ supersu zip.

I would recommend flashing the recovery in order to get everything working properly, and to easily recover if something goes wrong
I was wondering whether it's possible to share files between the different users of the same N7? For instance to make video or music files available regardless of who is logged in.
I don't seem to be able to find anyone even discussing this anywhere at all.

The closest option to that is Multi-User App Share. It doesn't have the ability to share files though. Maybe the creator will make it possible in a future update though

I have seen it in the play store, but I'm not sure how that would make sharing files within the tablet possible, and since it requires rooting I can't even try it unfortunately.

I know ANDROID 4+ doesn't support flash and I know I'll have to download and install adobe flash player from the web(which I already did) it still doesn't play.
Btw, I also own HTC One and it plays flash in stock player out of the box so was wondering what's different

Found this in another forum post:
"Flash won't work with the built-in Webkit browser. After side-loading, no Flash love and there's no option to enable Flash in browser settings (unusual since the standard Webkit browser usually works with Flash Player and has that option)."
I've also read in other threads that Jelly Bean on the S4 does not have flash support at all for the stock browser. It also doesn't have a permanent desktop mode, open new tabs in background and a plethora of other features they left out. The S3 stock browser was far superior, not sure why they decided to remove all the features that are actually useful on the S4.
The stock browser as well as Google's Chrome browser no longer support Flash as Adobe released a statement in late 2011 that they will no longer be providing any support to the mobile platform. This means no stability updates as well as no security updates. However, Firefox for android still supports Flash playback and I've found that most Flash content is supported. Full screen is hit or miss but otherwise you should find solace there.

There are several threads that discuss getting flash to work on a different browser but I have yet to see anything remotely resembling a possibility of flash working in the stock browser. Unless you can provide a link to this so called tutorial, I believe you may have mistaken it for one of these:

Hi, I'm trying to use app called ShareKM to share my PC keyboard and mouse with my smartphone. Unfortunatetly, when I start the program I get a notification toast saying that unrooted device support only USB connections. Thing is, I am rooted. Other apps use root without issues, I also used Root Checker from the app store to confirm and everything is great, it's just this app that is not supported.. Any thoughts? Maybe there is another way to root Note 3? I have SuperSU.

Unfortunatetly, when I start the program I get a notification toast saying that unrooted device support only USB connections. Thing is, I am rooted. Other apps use root without issues, I also used Root Checker from the app store to confirm and everything is great, it's just this app that is not supported.. Any thoughts? Maybe there is another way to root Note 3? I have SuperSU.

Which method you've used to root? CF-Auto-Root or URDLV ?

I just followed the instructions to install Dr. Ketan's 4.3 Rom. No need to root because it was already rooted.

I too have this problem with ShareKM, although admittedly on a Galaxy Note 2 with 4.3 Custom ROM. Maybe the problem is 4.3?
I'm another AT&T Note 2 (4.3 DN3 ROM custom TW) user with this problem.
I will report back ASAP if I stumble upon a solution or an alternative app - I absolutely need ShareKM running too.

Take Control is an app that is supposed to function like ShareKM, but mouse clicking doesn't work for me, and mouse control is laggy (apparently an issue with some Samsung devices). Also, it's Wifi-only.

i have also custom 4.3. and can only see USB when i run ShareKM on my Note 2....
Hope this will be sorted out... I love the damn app

SUCCESS! :victory: This alpha Synergy Android client works over WiFi very similarly to ShareKM. Here's how:
1. Download / Install / Configure (if necessary) the Windows x86 Synergy Server (presumably Win x64, Linux, and Mac versions should work too).

I use it to control my Nexus 7 (2012) with rooted KitKat 4.4.2
I already use Synergy for years to control my 2 pc's. It is worth a small donation!
I never managed to get it working on stock samsung kitkat 4.4.2, only on google rom.
I have a Note 3 (900A) as well and I get the same message even though every one of my other apps root correctly.
I noticed SuperSU doesn't even have a log of it ever asking for root.
I think the problem is more than just rooting. The program USED to work in the past but I noticed after adding bluetooth connectivity and adding another ROM slot with Bootstrap it randomly stopped working..
I tried reinstalling driver but still no luck..
Synergy is too complicated.
ShareKM is just plug-in and boom instant connectivity. Don't even have to touch my phone.

I have tried uninstalling the Note 3 drivers (both Android ADB and the one that comes up after plugging in) but I don't think it is deep enough because even after uninstalling in Device Manager there is no reinstallation progress window.
So... anybody know how to completely uninstall the phone drivers? lol

I have tried three different ROMs on my Note 2 (SGH-I317) and I get this issue on all three. It works perfectly fine on my Galaxy S4 (jfltecan) using CM11, but when i installed the same for my Note, no luck. I think its something wrong with the phone itself or how the root registers on the phone

Same with me. It works perfecty fine with my att s2 and my mom's att s4.
For some reason on my stock rom it like STOPPED working after i rooted it.

if you can post a working link of the aokp_xt908_jb-mr2_unofficial_2013-12-04 and pz version i would appreciate as i am unable to find a working fw with those features, aokp is one of the few that i did not try as i was unable to find any working links to download it.

1) its version is 4.3.1 and was bit laggy (even without gapps) i was wondering if i you could link another version like 4.1.2 or anyother as it might be older but smoother
2) i know about different gsm fixes but i can't remember witch one is needed in this case
3) what gapps should i choose i tried it without
directional arrows on nav bar while keyboard is active is the coolest thing i ever saw on an android

And if 4.3.1 lags for you then 4.1 won't likely help either.

didn't you receive my PM? I sent you a link with atleast 4-5 other AOKP versions. Try them out. According to one developer, 4.3.x was the heaviest of all JB versiona, try aokp_xt907_unofficial_2013-08-09.zip or the aokpzmod_xt907_nightly_20130726.zip that I sent you links to. They're both JB 4.2.2 (my favorite JB version). There's an AOKP GSM fix that I think should be just fine for you to use. For Gapps, I would recommend Core BaNkS Gapps. I can share if you want.

i didnt see the pm msg at the biginning now i did ...thanks very much....the nightly one wont boot hangs on boot logo ...tried to wipe ,format erase...it wont boot....all the other roms it will give 7 hours of download time for each ...it will give error after about one hour of download...
will try later with the rom aokp_xt907_unofficial_2013-08-09.zip in case the download completes...what do you think gone wrong with the nighly installation ?
