[Q] Custom Alarm Sound - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Trying to add a custom alarm sound. Can see that the standard alarms are ogg format. However, it turns out that it doesn't matter - it is only looking inside the read-only partition for the alarm sounds. Presumably the answer is to root to get write access here - or is there another way???

Put the alarm sound in a folder called Alarms in the root of the internal "sdcard".

I like it better this way. I don't want a 5 second clip in my ringtones list and I don't want a 30 second clip in my notifications list.

i understand you , but i have some sounds that i use as alarm and some times as ringtones and i do not want to store it twice ...maybe i have one folder audio in witch i have a sub folders ringtones , alarms, notification and if i want to choose an alarm melody from ringtones i can without having to save file twice

I have a similar issue, but I can't find any help via google. When I add mp3 files to the /Alarms folder on my Nexus 4 they no longer show up under the Alarm clock app when choosing a sound. It used to work but hasn't for a while now.
I can't for the life of me work out what is wrong.

Using a file explorer with show hidden files enabled make sure there isn't a .nomedia file in the folder.

I checked using ES File Explorer with show hidden files on. No .nomedia files in the Alarms folder or any patient folders.

I found a workaround! By browsing the files using ES File Explorer instead of the built-in file browser I can chose from any of the files in the Alarms folder. :good:

I put the mp3 i want in the Alarm folder in yet it doesn't show up in the alarm ringtone list. I'm using the latest 4.3, does it make any difference?

I'm on I9505G ROM 4.3 but copying mp3 files to Alarms folder doesn't work either..

Make sure that the folder name is 'Alarms'. Clear data of Media Storage and reboot.

Notification Sounds

I downloaded an app called RingsExtender which allows you to choose sounds other than the default sounds ("Look At Me", "Captain's Log", etc) for your notification sounds for GMail, SMS, Google Talk, etc. However, I was wondering, does anyone know a good website or anywhere where I can find notification sounds as .mp3s or .wavs?

just look around. google wavs. i personally download mario sound effect. i really like the yoshi sound
I need an app like that but I can't fnd it. anybody got the apk?
I used that app before until I've realized (read somewhere on the forum) that all you need to do is put sound files into notifications or ringtones folder on your SD card and then they will appear in the list of sounds when you choose new sound for apps.
As for sounds just Google it -- there are plenty of sound resources on the web.
Ringdroid will allow you to cut a piece of an MP3 and save it as a notification or ring. Is that what you're looking for?
do they have to be in .ogg format to work? andexplorer won't let me copy/paste wavs or mp3 into the system folders.
I also have a question on this( sort of)
Where can I get the default ringtones? I think they got removed on cyanogens roms.. but I actually liked some of them. Help? Or pm me. Thanks!
Sorry double post
http://www.zedge.net/
Hands down the best ringtone site Ive come across.
Free , LOTS to choose from , and seems to have a userbase uploading some unique ones.

just make the following directory structure using your computer on the fat32 partition and put the mp3 files there...
/audio/ringtones
/audio/notifications

There is a link to Audio Resources in the first post of the cyanogen stable rom thread. That contains everything removed plus more.

I gave you the wrong info here it is actually..
media/audio/ringtones
media/audio/notifications
I keep my notification sounds on my ext3 partition, because the phone can still acess them when the fat32 partition is mounted in your computer.
All you have to do is push the media folder to /system/sd although I did make to make all the folders manually, only took a couple of minutes though, and the sounds show up on the phone just like they would on the fat32 partition.

RingTone

may i know how to chnage dream's msg ring tone... cause all the ring tone theat i can select are all default.... how can i choose or import music ring tone to my msg ring tone.... thxz in advance
if you're rooted, create a folder on the sd card called media. then create another folder inside it called audio. then create another inside the audio folder called notifications. put all youre custom tones in that notifications folder and you're all set.
do u mind teaching me more on rooted?

Why do say "if you're rooted"?
The exact same thing can be done with a non-rooted phone by plugging it up to a pc and clicking mount
As a matter of fact the audio pack that's an addition to cyan's builds sit's in a folder called audio on my sdcard and my phone reads the ringtone's & notification's from it
so wat u mean is i juz have to plug my phone to a pc then cre8 the folder according?

Yea it pretty much just that easy
k i will try... thxz for all that
Create a folder on your CD card called ringtones, and one called notifications and put the files you want in each one.
i still cant have my own msg ringtones... i cre8 2 folder in my sd card after that i put the songs/ringtones that i wan in thr... after that i disconnect the usb frm my phone.... then when i go into my phone settings, and i tap on notificatons settings - select ringtones, i still cant find the song/ringtones that i wan... i really nid help here thxz in advance
I have mine setup like this:
root>My Audio/Ringtones and root >My Audio/Notifications
So I'm not sure if you need to name it any specific thing.
an easier way is to use ringdroid and everything will be made for you. But if you create the folder make a folder called media and inside that folder make 2 folders, one called notification and the other ringtone.
yeah just as supremeteam456 said.. u can use ringroid or another app called rings extended..
Create folders on SD card:
alarms/
notifications/
ringtones/
And place media accordingly. What format are the items you're trying to use? MP3? WAV? Other?

Running CM 4.2.7, ringtones
hey guys, i found this post but it doesn't seem to answer anything, i'll make a new thread if I can't get an answer out of this one.
So I've been running cyanogen's mod for a while now, and i haven't been able to change my notification ringtones. I have ringdroid and rings extended, and i know how to change the ringtones, but everytime I click 'ok' or 'accept' or whatever it is, when it reloads the settings menu, the default ringtone is still selected, as if i never tried to change it.
any ideas?

[Q] Ringtones... Seriously...

I have tried many different ways to get my custom ringtones onto my mt4g but everything has failed so far. Please if anyone isnt laughing to hard at this post and would like to help drop a line. How do you get ringtones onto this device!
ummm make a folder called "ringtones" on your sdcard and voila... I is 99% sure of this... I will edit with the right info I'm wrong as Ihave some on my phone but my phone is so very very far away (50+ feet OMG)
Weirdly enough I did indeed do that and they did not show up. That was my first thought but it didn't work... Any other ideas?

Create a ringtones folder under media on your sd card
mine is in /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones and they show up
Do that and then go into Music and then tap and hold on to the ringtone you want then you'll get the option of making it a ringtone, or use Zedge from the market to download and set your ringtones.

Download and use Zedge.
Ok wait what does the file extension need to be saved as for this phone?

it doesn't matter. .mp3 will be fine.
Funny. I used the same SD card that was from my blackberry. My ringer folder was under sdcard- blackberry - ringtones. And it showed up on my mt4g no problem.

Ok this is ridiculous already. I messed with it all day...downloaded zedge again and tried saving my ringtones to even that folder, nothing worked... But the thing I don't understand is why isn't it. My sister has the original mytouch and I did all the same steps on her phone and it worked flawlessly. I'm fine for the night I'm going to sleep lol

This is shouldn't be that hard; it's a simple process. Create this path on your sdcard:
/media/audio/ringtones
you can also have custom notifications by creating:
/media/audio/notifications
I doubt android requires you to do so, but just in case, create those folders in all lowercase. I'm looking at my ringtones plain as day.
to recap:
create a folder called 'media' and place it on your sdcard.
create a folder called 'audio' and place it inside the 'media' folder.
create a folder called 'ringtones' and place it inside the 'audio' folder.
put all your ringtones in there.
Rintones supported are: MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, MPEG4, WAV, OGG
**Edit** they should show up immediately in your ringtones options. If not, make sure you have unplugged or unmounted your phone from your computer (It can't see those ringtones while the sdcard is mounted). Might as well reboot for good measure. This process works for rooted and unrooted phones.

Ringtone and notification change in S4

Hello
I want to add custom notification sound for my S4, I have them in mp3 format
I put these files in media\audio\notifications and it didn't show in the list
I tried also in \Notifications and they didn't also!!
each time i try a reboot to make it rescan for the new media but still no luck!
is there is a working way for this to add my tones? I tried zedge and it works but I can't add my tones to it..
I think about convert the files to .ogg and put them in system/media but this will only work for rooted phones and I guess there is another solution for that much easier!
thanks

Hi,
Try putting a folder on the root of your sd card, and call it "Notifications".
Put your mp3's in there and try again.
thanks for reply
I already tried that and wrote this on the OP,and it doesn't work too!!
and for ringtones I add them to ringtones folder and the tones never show up until I reboot the phone!
Using zedge and Ringtone maker adds the notifications and I found them instantly
maybe there is something in these apps makes the phone rescan media or what, the thing is I have a nexus 7 and once I add mp3 file to notification folder I find it in the list instantly!!
thanks

If you push the mp3 notifs to the Notification folder, you would definitely have to reboot for it to take effect

Ok, then its normal to reboot to see the tone, I was thinking there is something wrong with me as this is not the case on my nexus 7 tablet.
thanks
I have the solution!!
I had the exactly the same problem with my S4(i9500). I've searched across the web to get a solution but in the end I've found it on my own.
> Install ES file explore
> clear defaults for Media Storage(default android sound picker). ( you may not need to do this)
> go to sound settings then notifications (or message settings then select ringtone whatever u want to change)
> you should see a dialog like complete action using : ES file explorer, Media storage, zedge (if u have it)
> choose ES and hit Just once(so you won't have to clear defaults every time)
> navigate to sound file u want and hit it.
I hope this helps.
LoL, I have the solution.
Now let's get back to reality, how to get media store to list all the sounds i downloaded from the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895636
Anyone with at least the smallest noodle knows to chose es file explorer to be able to chose one sound at a time to Add. So how to get all the sounds to list from media storage
No one knows

Yeah it has one way. U can put the mp3 files in the folder u want, this isnt important. Follow this steps:
1. Go to Apps, Settings, My device, Sound, Ringtones
2. Look for button "Add"
3. Add the sounds u want one by one
4. When u have them in that list, click OK
5. Now u can go Default notification sound
6. Select the one u need added manually b4
7. Enjoy ur new notification sound! I hope it helped ya :highfive:
LoL., even the basic of n00bs knows to use es file explorer to add one sound at a time, although what about when you have 1500 of them from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895636
No one knows how to have these new sounds automatically show up, settings , sounds , media storage. Well maybe someone knows how and just never said a word because it's confidential and they Could possible be reprimanded big time, lol

Just copy your files in notifications and/or ringtone in the folders on your internal storage. They will appear in your choices.
No individual Notification tones in Nougat?
Can you not apply individual notification tones in Nougat ? I used to be able to assign tines for FaceBook (FB "PoP"), whatsapp, different tones for both sim texts (I have dual sim phones now all running Nougat V7). I'm using a Huawei Mate 9 128gb and Porsche Design Mate 9
Seems a bit mad to me as it was a great feature or am I missing something?
Check that you don't have a .nomedia file in the root file system. I had an app do this and it disabled my custom ringtone and notification sounds.
I had to remove it and remove and replace my custom sounds to fix.
I have a Nexus 6P myself, with Android 7.
I don't know why this isn't said more often: You need root access. And it shows up in none of the "solutions" on Google.
The stock notification sounds are in /system/media/audio/notifications, and you need root access do do anything there. Most apps just give you an option of picking a sound from this particular folder. So all other advice on this is stupid and pointless.
You need root access to have a custom ringtone on your Android. Certainly a blow to the philosophy of how "free" Android is supposed to be compared to iOS.

I have replaced the the original files with the one I would like to have, i.e. renamed the file "original.ogg" to "blabla.ogg", copied the custom filed "custom.ogg" in the corresponding folder, renamed to "original.ogg". When I select "original.ogg" as a ringtone, e.g. in whatsapp, the standard notification tone is played instead. However, if I click on the file in whatsapp, the correct tone appears. Choosing "original.ogg" as the standard ringtone leads to no ringtone sound at all. Any thoughts?

I had the same problem on my S7 Edge and figured out the problem. The files copied over with the Attribute Permissions of R/W for the OWNER and nothing on the GROUP and GLOBAL level. In Solid explorer, I changed the permissions to READ on the GROUP and GLOBAL levels and its now working like a charm.
After the upgrade to Android 7, I lost my ringtones and notifications that I downloaded to the Ringtones and Notifications folders in the root of my SD card. I had to copy those folders in to the system /media folder, including the Alarms foder. After that, I was able to see all my personal ringtones, notifications and alarms. This only works in the internal storage.
