Just by coincidence I've been researching around lately to unlock my Motorola Bravo phone so that I can use it on any network I wish. I have already "rooted" it, which I remember was quite easy (I think what most people complain about is the amount of time it can take and the number of steps that can be involved), but, as you most likely know, rooting and unlocking are completely separate, independent functions on the phone. I searched Google, a bunch of message boards like this one here (this has always been my favorite...lots of extremely intelligent people), even some torrent files, but despite hours of searching, I unfortunately couldn't find any way to unlock the phone without just paying for the code. Yes, you can get it free from your carrier, but my account has been cancelled for months and I no longer have that option. Luckily paying for the code is very cheap and should cost you less dollars than the number of digits on your hands...if not keep looking b/c you're getting ripped off.
Theoretically, that is if my theory of how the phone functions is correct, there should be a way. I mean, if unlocking is done purely through software, there's gotta be a way to crack that part of the software and trick the phone into thinking the correct unlock code has been entered. I know the whole IMEI number to unlock code generation process uses an encrypted algorithm to work, so I don't know how difficult or impossible that would be, but that's one way I can think of doing it. Another way I thought of that seems like it should work, although I haven't heard anyone that has done this specifically say that it also unlocked their phone, is to totally wipe the phone and reflash it with a generic/unbranded version of Android. Would either of these options work anyone?

You might, MIGHT, be able to use the Defy Soft Sim Unlock, but its for a different baseband than what we use (not in /system/etc/motorola, but in /dev/block/mmcblk1p14 -- actual radio partition). I attempted to flash the Defy radio.img, but I ended up having to flash the sbf so don't flash the baseband zip on that page. Go to Defy General and go to the Stickied Wiki or Beginner's Guide and it'll have all the info you need on this.
'
While I'm hopeful for you, I doubt it will work but its worth trying. You can also try motofan.ru and see if they can provide an unlock code for your Bravo (its free). Its a 50\50 chance that they can or can't.
Your only other option is forking over the $$$ and buying the code. Don't try to randomly guess it -- you only have 10 tries and once you use them all you're (possibly) screwed.

CINGULAR 8525 (aka herm100) unlocking FRUSTRATION IS MAKING ME ###[email protected]#$#

Hi folks...
so i sold my blackberry pearl and added 100.00 for a nice cingular 8525. i needed to unlock this phone so i came across "pof" tutorial and methods of unlocking myself.. i went through the process thinking i did have 1.04 radio because when i go to bootloader (tri color screen) it shows IPL 1.04 and spl-shipped.. so i thought 1.04 was the version... the tutorial mentions spl-xxx is the version but mine says shipped.. (whats with that? ) so basically i followed the steps and later got sucess word and punched in the code given by "pof" but it didn't work and now says "you have tried 6 times and wait until time"
so i don't want to screw this up anymore so come to you guys for help..
so i went to the device system menu
and radio version says 1.48
rom version is 3.0
win 6 mobile
phone is cingular and my sim card is tmobile
so i guess i have 1.48 and not 1.04 that is needed to unlock myself... so i heard if i don't have 1.04 i need to get the imei number and get the unlock code so i went to http://www.wirelessunlocks.com/ and hopefully the code they give me will work.. i paid 7.99 for this service..
so my questions.
1. since i followed "pof" instructions and got sucess at the end.. despite having a 1.48 radio version... did i permanently damage my phone? or i think the word is "bricking".
2. Wirelessunlocks.com i used... to get the code number (which hasn't come yet) does these services have a high sucess rate?
3. if the wirelessunlocks.com service doesn't seem to work.. what are my other options? perhaps i can downgrade to 1.04 from 1.48 ? or any method so i can start using this phone will be great.. has been very frustrating...process but i'm learning
I hope this helps!
When I first unlocked AT&T 8525 my phone, I read up all the articles on how it could be bricked, and by the time I finished reading them, I figured, well.....if my phone bricks....then, it was meant to be, lol. I used the pof unlocker v3a the day I got my phone, and it worked. I have no idea what version of spl, or ipl I had before, but the way that they talk about it on the site, it seems that its safe to use with any HERM100 phone. Oh, and I found this video on the pof site. http://youtube.com/watch?v=4lA9S9ELSAU Let me know how things go! Oh, and when your phone is a brick, it means that it is useless, whether it be that when you turn it on, it freezes at the startup screen and never loads windows, or whether it doesnt turn on anymore, or any state that seems hopeless. I think that if your phone enters a state where it keeps going to the bootloader mode, that it still can be saved, but I'm not 100% sure. If anyone else reads this and disagrees, please correct me! Oh, and when you get your phone unlocked, feel free to contact me about any cool things you wanna do to it. I got about 6 months of experience now, lol. Doesn't come close to some of the senior members who create their own roms now, lol, but I can still be of help!
Ok, monkeyisland90, radio rom has got NOTHING to do with unlocking the hermes. Its the IPL & the SPL. To see these go into bootloader screen. How to do so are in Pofs instructions.... Follow the instructions STEP by STEP and you cant go wrong. A large number of people have done this successfully (including myself) so you should have no trouble. Most people "skip ahead" and thats how you will get into hot water. Try again and I think, if you go step by step, you will have no trouble. Dont forget to install hard SPl on before upgrading roms though. It'll help if things go wrong( and they will at least once) to recover your Phone. If the radio rom seems to work ok and there is no real battery drain LEAVE IT ALONE... This is probably the riskiest part to flash as a failure generally means a brick. Most, if not all, cooked roms dont include a radio so can be considered safer to flash. Personally I prefer to use the sd card method of flashing as there has been less problems for me with this method but it comes down to personel preference. Happy Flashing......
but when going to the bootloader (tricolor screen) it says
ipl-1.04
spl-shipped..
and pof says that after spl-xxx it should be your rom version.. but mine says shipped.. what the heck does that mean?
is this where i need to do the hard spl?
hey monkeyisland90, did you ever get your unlock code from wirelessunlocks.com?
I stumbled across them while googling unlock sites...7.99 is a tough deal to beat, but the site was only registered in February and looking through HoFo, here and googling wirelessunlocks.com, yours is the only first-person account I've seen of ordering through them.
So...are they any good?
Wireless Unlocks are a scam
They are a scam.

Has anyone unlocked their g1 running on cyanogen?

Well, the story goes like this:
Bought a g1 and the second logical step was to put in cyanogen. After a while I thought that an unlocked phone would be even better. Went online and purchased the unlock code and tried to use it while running cyanogen. Did not work. Flashed to rc29, tried again, did not work. Then I went to another unlock provider and this guy, gave me the same code as the first, based on my IMEI ( I don't have a fake IMEI), he tried it as well and did not work. Then he searched for different version of the code based on the IMEI for different htc products ( it seems that they have some accounts with htc and for IMEI they receive the unlock code). We also tried it with a goldcard which only made my g1 scream that I don't have a simcard inside.
Bottom line, did cyanogen mood do something to the unlock procedure ( hard locked the phone on tmobile - on tmobile the phone works fine) ? Or I just happened to have a weird phone, Thank you.
Btw, my unlock code is 92179512. Feel free to try it. It would be funny as hell if it were to unlock someone elses phone, and if it does, let me know as well.
I unlocked my phone on a MUCH older version of CM, so I wouldnt be able to tell you if anything has changed to effect the process. However, if you're a TMO customer, you do know that after 90 days they will GIVE you the unlock code for free, right?
I also have unlocked it on Cyanogen mod, but I believe I was on 4.2.7.1 at the time.... not that long ago really.... but T-Mobile does indeed give away the unlock code for free, and it worked flawlessly.
Neither the ROM, SPL or radio can effect the simlock. It's not Cy's ROM that's causing the problem...
What do you mean 'it doesn't work'? Does the phone reject the code?
Thank you for the reply. Well the problem is that I don't have a contract with Tmobile since I don't have the money for it. I bought it off from someone and used Tmobile prepaid sim card, which works fine. And, because of that, Tmobile won't provide me with an unlock code .
Regarding the code, when I type in the code it says network unlock unsuccessful, so I can't do much about it. I'm trying to update to the latest stock donut and see what happens.
Ah that sucks :-( I really can't of any options for you, since any codes generated will always be the same...

notice in the replies above, that cyanogen nor spl, nor anything software related can change your unlock status.
you already have an unlock code, and since you've had it generated from two different sources, i believe that code is correct for THAT IMEI number. that being said, did you copy the imei number from the sticker on the inside, or from what the phone shows in "PHONE INFO" ? I'd make sure they both match.
i also have a phone that is flacky about SIMs. haven't found an explanation yet, I think some of the boards have bad solder joints, or there is another hardware problem that causes similar errors. no proof yet.
try a friends Tmo sim card, and if his is recognized, and allows data connection, you'll know it's your phone that is locked, and that all the hardware is working. i'll bet you entered the wrong code because the sticker inside was wrong, or you fat fingered it. just a guess.
good luck, please update the thread when/if you find a definite answer.
I would bet the IMEI on the sticker and on the board are different... where did you buy said phone and for how much? It could very well be a refurb, which will have bits and pieces from several different phones, and thus could have the SIM locked guts for phone 666 and the case from phone 888 type thing.
Yep, checked it 10 times the first time I bought the code online. The same imei in about this phone is on the sticker. After I saw it did not work, I went to a local unlock shop around my place and the guy there checked it again more than 6 times. So.. weird eh? And both guys got the same code from HTC based on that IMEI
Sounds like this may be a hardware error. If that is the unlock that is generated then it should just work. The unlock does not really pertain to the rom or anything else that people usually mod. Also, maybe ask that dude why he was giving up that phone, maybe there is really something wrong with it.
the only other thing left is get an turbo unlocker chip that sits between SIM and phone
pain in ass to install but I have done it with out cutting the SIM card
I am guessing someone had typed the code in incorectly .. they can be permiatly locked if wrong code has been entered
also just because it was another person does not mean their MEI source wasn't the same
I guess they worked out they work ,,, I payed $5 for mine .. now 4x the price
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEXT-SIM-TUR...wItemQQptZPDA_Accessories?hash=item4cec3cab8c
The unlock codes sources are all the same. I lost over 100$ trying to get unlock codes from them but 80% of them don't work (only the ones for htc phones). I use a turbo sim with my G1 and is really easy to install. just buy one and cut your sim where the CHIP from the turbo sim is located. It works flawlessly.
Im just throwing this out there to say that I was able to successfully unlock my g1 with CM 4.2.10.1
Other than that I would just be repeating what was already said if I was to give any advice.
Best of luck man.

Actually, they will give you an unlock code after 90 days of being a customer and every 90 after the last time you got an unlock code. They will give you an unlock code the same day you buy the phone if you meet those requirements.
Sorry if this is irrelevant to the rest of the thread, but assuming I unlock on JF 1.5 (yea I'm behind) to ATT, and wipe everything to install a HeroUI ROM of some sort, will the unlock still be in effect or will I need to unlock the phone again?
Thanks.

You'll be ok.
I actually like JUST did it on a coworkers(I admit, going from WiMo to Android is a learning curve, but its easy), he got his from craigslist, had JF 1.5 on it. He used it for like a week, complained about sluggishness (he did have like 20 apps constantly running) Anyway, after a few beers and lurking here (it was when I was deciding what HTC to get) we decided to go to CM (latest build). Everything went fine step by step.
I cannot vouch for your particular ROM but for CM it was fine.

Unlock code generation

ok I've finally gotten around to looking at unlocking this thing
Entering a foreign SIM (any, doesnt even have to be active) pops up a prompt for a PIN so we know this is just like any other phone. I've tried entered in over 5 random pins already so at least I know it's possible to try at least 5 times without any consequences that I can see. Furthermore , the enter code button is highlighted after 4 numbers. Are we gonna be so lucky to be able to brute force that?
Anyhow, ive never seen an unlock code before, but from googling they seem to be generated from an IMEI. So does this mean that each phone has a unique code to be generated then?
I've also read that with Nokia phones anyway, too many attempts will lock the phone from being able to accept unlock codes at all. This was after I made about 10 tries, but still seems to be good with the DVP
So does anyone know how long a typical code is?
the unlock code is generated from the phone's IMEI and is therefore unique to each phone.
unfortunately there is no way of knowing how long the code is unless we can successfully get a rom dump and look into the system files
from my experience unlocking various phones, the unlock code can be 4 characters or longer, but generally a lot longer
Thanks, surprised more people havent chimed in yet, especially those that got their phones earlier. The 90 days is close to being up for some of the earlier adopters.
Judging from how unlock sites are structured by manufacturer, I'm guessing each manufacturer has their own unique algorithm or private key to generate codes from and the problem with Dell is that they just haven't made enough phones for anyone to really notice/want to crack theirs yet since at this point all they have out are the Streak and this phone..
yeah, the unlock sites either grab it from a database of codes that they have obtained, mostly directly from the manufacturer, or they have the algorithm to generate the code
it is possible to reverse engineer but it would require either a copy of the dell rom and/or some IMEIs and their associated unlock codes
unfortunately we dont have either just yet.
oh....if someone could offload the EM diagnostic program from the phone, it may hold some clues too
i dont have the know how to offload the program, but apparently it is possible from looking at the WP7 dev & hacking forum

Questions on rooting and SIM unlocking (S4 eumk2 4.3)

Hey guys,
I'm new to this forum. A while back I found a phone in the gas station bathroom that I was working at. I kept it under the desk with a note and of course the camera watching it in case it disappeared without a customer picking it up. No one ever came for it and after 2 weeks (company policy) I took it home with me. Anyway, I've just been using it on my wireless internet and playing games, however my phone contract just ran out on my crappy verizon old flip phone and I want to go to straight talk and use this one.
So, I bought the Straight talk byop kit which includes a sim card for the phone, however, the SIM card that's meant for AT&T phones is too small for this one for some reason, however the TMobile one fits in it perfectly fine. The problem is that it's a tmobile sim card and I'm sure you all know that I need to unlock the phone to get it. So, last night I spent about 4 hours searching for ways to unlock it. I see it's possible to do it for free using the system settings phone codes, but the code combinations don't seem to work for me.
*#0011# - When i key enter 1 it doesn't do what the video I was watching says it's supposed to do.
*#9090# - Restarts my phone after I hit the what I'm told to.
There's another I tried however, I can't remember the code, it takes me to the debug menu, however option 6 isn't there to give me access to phone options or whatever.
So, I gave up as my laptop battery started to waiver around 10% and went to sleep.
Now, today, I hopped on and attempted to figure it out again, but got bored really quick, stumbling accross the same stuff I tried last night, so I tried rooting it thinking that getting admin access to my phone would make option 6 appear when I entered that number. I was wrong, but hey, I successfully rooted my phone so it's cool.
Anyway, I just want the SIM card to work. I really don't care if I have to unlock my phone or whatever, I just want my phone to be able to make calls. So if unlocking my phone works, please help me, if there's a way to get the super small AT&T SIM card to work, then that's be great.
I'm sure you need some of my phone info to help me out so here we go.
It's a Samsung S4 on 4.3 firmware, rooted. It's an I337 and the baseband version says I337UCUEMK2.
If you need any other information to help me out, please feel free to ask. I tried calling AT&T already btw, they said without a phone number they won't provide me with an unlock code.

I honestly don't understand 90% of the words in that post... Is there a post or article that'll teach me the basics to rooting and unlocking? I'd really love to do custom roms and everything. I honestly thought when I rooted my phone it'd give me admin access and the hidden system management options would become open to me.
Anyway, hope you can help, my wife is getting on my case about getting it unlocked. If I don't have it done tonight, she's going to make me add the straight talk to a different phone instead of this one and I really don't want to use a cheap piece of junk straight talk phone.

I'm doing research on getting a custom rom installed right now, I'm looking at Carbon ROM. I guess I have another question, is there any roms that give me full access to system manager or whatever it's called when you enter those numbers?
Okay, I made an attempt to use your walkthrough, method 2. I went and downloaded odin, and tried to flash the mdl modem however they don't exactly explain in the walkthrough how to do that, I figured I'd take a hit at it and went to do it and odin says it failed.
Is there a walk through I can read through to find how to flash?
I'm not sure what safestrap is, I can't find it on my phone and google only brings up droid ones for me as far as I've seen. It sounds like if I get the mdl modem on my phone that because it unlocks the hidden options in system manager I just have to do that and use the system manager walkthroughs I've seen to go ahead and unlock it.
EDIT: Okay, I got safestrap installed, now I'm just trying to figure out how to get a different modem installed, any help there? I'm looking and asking around but I'm not seeing anything.

LG V20 H918 Unlock Code used/Successful?

Hi there guys,
I seem to have an issue, on my LG V20 H918 I order an unlock code. I figured out a method to make it prompt for the code and bypass the T-Mobile unlocking app all together, however, here's the issue.
I received Three codes in with the markers
NCK:8565570142041856
SPCK:9791172928931644
NSCK:2448289909387735
NOTE: Codes included because they do not identify me or my device directly.
First I entered NCK and got "Network unlock successful" and went on assuming that was the end to it, however, after rebooting it prompts me for the Network Unlock Pin again. After entering the same (NCK) I was this time told the unlock was unsuccessful, so I tried the other codes provided all with the same Network unlock request unsuccessful response.
So my ultimate question is, what the you suppose the first success did and how can I finish the job? If it weren't for me figuring out how to access manual code entry, I wouldn't have spent money on this code.
How I accomplished bypassing the unlock app and getting a unlock prompt was by flashing AOKP and booting with a unauthorized SIM card, I'm just confused because what did that first successful unlock do? Why would it prompt me for the unlock code again and not accept the first successful code. I'm not sure if my device is unlocked or not at this point considering that, is it possible that the initial successful unlock enabled another band to be used in an unlocked state or even unlocked the device just the app does another step I'm failing to do manually to finalize this unlock.
I'd appreciate your opinions and advice in this situation, I personally feel like this might lead to something or either I'm running into a dead end another individual has also.
If you pay for it on like an installment plan you have to pay it off completely before you can unlock it. They keep it locked so you don't just do a promo and leave to someone like AT&T.

I'm not actually sure what the status of this device was, I bought it 3rd party from an Ebay seller. Any speculation on what the first "Unlock request successful" did if anything?
No idea unlocking phones isn't my specialty. But possibly the phone is blacklisted which is making it hard to unlock. Honestly what I'd do is take it to a T-Mobile store and ask them what's up.

Tried giving them a call, they appear to get very rude when they hear the word "unlock" which is sad, I take it they don't particularly care for people getting device unlocks? She hung up on me and the other agent just completely shut me off, she tried to offer me a contract but no further details which is really irritating.
That's unlike their service. It's possible you called at a bad time. More mid day is when they're as helpful as can be. I would take it to a store if possible and just tell them your situation I've done that before and they bent over backwards for me at my store.

Unfortunately, nothing more. Still haven't managed to figure out exactly what it did, I did discover that the phone does not have money owed on it.. Not entirely sure what the chock this up to really. I cannot replicate the results to investigate with logcat, I know that my attempts didn't permanently lock my device thankfully.
