NFC issue - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I received my Nexus 10 Today and have been playing with it for about an hour and a much as I love it, I have a weird issue.
When I try to send something, a picture or contact for example, by NFC, it opens the play store and fails to receive!
Any ideas?

The phone I am sending from is an S3.
The Nexus will receive webpages and YouTube links but when I send a picture, it opens up the play app store.
Confused!!

From settings turn off the S3 / Samsungs own version of photo sharing and turn on the standard android version. Sorry I can't remember exact names but I know the Samsung/Android versions of NFC Direct are different.

S-beam I think
Sent from my One X using xda app-developers app

Yep, S-Beam uses wifi direct, while standard NFC is Bluetooth.

I have tried that.
Unfortunately the S3 gives me the message "S Beam is off. Turn on S Beam and try again". The Nexus still opens up the play store!
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app

I have just found a link on another site that says that because the S3 uses Wi-Fi direct and standard Android uses Bluetooth, it can cause a major headache! Does anyone know any way to permanently disable the S3 S Beam?
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app

On my S3 I have the option to disable S Bean. Enable NFC and enable Android Beam. I would imagine this would enable it to work. Will have my Nexus 10 today but for now I'm just advising without any experience.

I have the options to turn S Beam on or off as well as Android Beam. Unfortunately it doesn't work in any mode.

Where are the NFC chips located on the device? I am having trouble locating them.

Send text to nexus 7

I've seen a lot of apps that will send your phone text to a tablet but it seems like none are compatible yet anyone know of any that are yet ?

Tablet talk works great.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I use "What's App." Works great across different platforms (and especially for international texts - no fees!). It's like an instant messaging service, but it piggybacks your cell network if you're tethering.
EDIT: sorry, I forgot to mention that it only works if the other person has What's App, too.
I use Google voice, only thing that you don't get are the picture msgs.

Try HeyWire Link ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5tZWRpYWZyaWVuZHMuY2hpbWUiXQ.. ) in google play it is free and it works. Takes a few min's to setup and a little thinking because of the way the help files are, well there english is not to good lets put it that way. But it works very well. Hope that helps
Yes, I also use the fantastic product: 'Tablet Talk'
Rob has sent this from his Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I just use Google Voice which is linked to my Sprint account. Only downside is that you can't receive MMS.
+1 for tablet talk, it works great I just hope for more theme/customizing options in the future.

Whoah, great thread. Thanks for sharing guys. Think I'll try Tablet Talk on my Nexus 7!
Another +1 for Tablet Talk. It gets the job done.

Yes. Tablet talk syncs to your phone via WiFi or Bluetooth..so technically its using your cell service as an "extension" to your cell phone. I love it.

Google Voice, however like someone mentioned they haven't incorporated MMS into it yet.
Will try Tablet Talk tho.
I've used Tablet Talk for a couple weeks now and it hasn't really worked for me. I'm thinking that it's probably because of my phone. Does anyone else have a Galaxy S II/N7 pairing that works?

Be a bit more specific For example..are you using a 3rd party SMS program such as GoSms or Handicent? If so..read the FAQ for tablet talk.
Whats the issue that you're having?
Seriously amazed by tablet talk, my galaxy s3,suffered the sudden death syndrome, so was in a fickle, bought a cheap Huawei blaze and it's tethered to my phone and having to use tablet talk for texts and calls is amazing. Those using tablet talk for Blue tooth calling how clear is it.

If I'm not mistaken, In tablet talk you have to be connected by blue tooth or on the SAME wifi. An app called CLOUD SMS doesn't require that you be on the same wifi, I can receive text on my n7 even if I'm connected to wifi and my phone is not.

NFC Sharing

Has anybody tried to use the NFC feature? I tried to use it with a galaxy nexus and an S3 and no luck...this is a feature I was really looking forward to

You have to activate it. Turn NFC on in settings >>more >>NFC.

I was just doing it today at Thanksgiving dinner with 2 different Galaxy S3 phones. It works really well.
Depends what your trying to send. I tried sending a picture using beam from my note 2 to my nexus 4 and it didn't work, it did using drop box. I'm assuming it had to do with the two gallery apps not being the same.
It is activated. And I tried sending photos too but it didn't work. I sent a YouTube video though. Its all I could send

sending pics only work on Jellybean. If the other device was still ICS it won't go. I tried to send a pic to my GF's Skyrocket and it wouldn't go. sent one to my sister's gNex with Jellybean and it went just fine.

It's because they don't use the same gallery app.

No it isn't. The Gallery app doesn't have anything to do with it.
When you share a picture over beam on a stock Jelly Bean device the receiving device understands that the content to be transferred is a picture and opens a Bluetooth serial connection to the sending device. The file is then transferred over Bluetooth.
Samsung has enhanced this process starting with the S3 (S-Beam) to use Wifi-Direct for much faster transfers. However they invented their own way of doing things (as they often do). Google stated they have plans to migrate to Wifi Direct as well in a later release once the standards flush out (it didn't make it into 4.1 though and doesn't appear to have made it in to 4.2).
The issue from the Note 2 to the N4 is likely a mismatch in that the Note 2 is going to try to use S-Beam (which doesn't work with non Samsung Touchwiz devices) and the N4 is still looking to leverage Bluetooth tunneling.
Going the other way (N4 - Note 2) should work assuming it's running Jelly Bean.
that guy right there^^^^ Nailed it!

Wi-Fi direct and android beam

So I've been playing with my nexus 4 for the past week or so. And I'm pretty good with tech and Android, but for the life of me I cannot seem to get android been to create a Wi-Fi direct connection to transfer files. It just keeps creating a bluetooth connection. It takes a good 30-40 seconds to get a picture sent across, real frustrating... Am I doing something wrong? I've looked around and some sources say jelly bean introduced Wi-Fi direct for android beam while other say no Wi-Fi direct. What is going on?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium HD app
Android beam uses Bluetooth not WiFi direct. What you might be thinking of is Samsung's S-Beam which does us WiFi direct.
Edit: Jellybean did introduce WiFi direct but not for Android Beam.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Is there any way to use Wi-Fi direct then? Samsung's UI usually allowed a way to transfer files using it, but not sure how to do it now.

Which is what confused me. Because on my note 10.1 one if the options under share is Wi-Fi direct; I've find no such option on my nexus.
And Bluetooth only is quite stupid, anything larger than s contact takes an unnecessarily long time to transfer. I really hope they introduce Wi-Fi direct sharing and beak compatibility for the next version.

You can find WiFi direct in settings -> WiFi -> then the menu dots button (or whatever they call the replacement to the menu button)

There is a great app called Wi-Fi direct. I use this and all the time to move files around between my devices. You create a group and have to accept the invite from your device and bam.. direct WiFi.. device to device.

File Expert Pro is a free file manager app and is able to send files via NFC initiated WiFi Direct transfers. Both phones need File Expert Pro installed.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
How fast are Wi-Fi direct speeds, to anyone using them. In my head, I think it's not limited by anything other than the speed of the Wi-Fi chips, so it should be really fast, but I'm not really sure what real speeds would be near.
I never measured I move my whole titanium backup file with 300 apps in less than 10 minutes.. I will try to do a speed test this week. It is fast though..

The beam though is something else. You literally have to almost touch devices and you can only send one thing at Time like a Web page, picture, Google maps page.. Etc.. It is very fast but not for moving large amounts of data

[Q] my nexus 4 bluetooth ruins the wifi (drops)

So, when I turn on the bluetooth and connect it to anything, like headset or stereos, speakers, there is some wifi drops every 10 seconds or less which is so annoying, cant watch a youtube video or browse easy and everything is ruined, so how to fix that? And is that only me? Im rooting my phone next week, cause that was a replacement and on my old nexus 4 never used bluetooth after 7 months , so dunno if i had that on my old nexus 4 or not.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I have the same issue, when you use Bluetooth it interferes the 2.4GHz radio waves created via WiFi chip, 5GHz works fine on WiFi with Bluetooth on.

Unfortunately that is where the problem comes in, I am not sure if it is hardware or software which is causing the issue.
If you want to keep connection on WiFi with Bluetooth then for now you have to use a Wireless Router which supports 5GHz (to enable support on Nexus 4 go to settings, WiFi, advanced and then Wi-Fi frequency band which will show up a list, choose "Auto" for 5GHz and 2.4GHz).

It's not fixed when I receive a call in my car the n4 drops wifi. And that was the main reason for getting a wifi router in my car. I'm on 4.3 My galaxy Nexus does not have that problem. This needs to be fixed soon.
I dunno, its fixed since i flashed the 4.3 paranoid android rom, and google support sent an email saying that its fixed in android 4.3 and they said that cause i called them several times because of that issue, Ive never had this issue on my gnex, but I had the gnex when it was on 4.1.2, i heard that its a bug in 4.2.

Is the issue that the Tap & Pay menu doesn't appear in Settings or does the functionality not work? I have never used it but I just turned on NFC to check and once I do, tap&pay appears in settings. Wi-fi N7 here.

Tap & pay will only show up after NFC is enabled (Kit Kat only, NOT Jelly Bean for you n00bs out there).
However, even after I reverted to stock unrooted jelly bean, oem locked, sideloaded the update, & reinstalled Wallet....Wallet STILL does not show up in the Tap & Pay app list. So I don't know what else to do.

The secure NFC chip isn't needed for tap and pay starting with KitKat. That's why they added it at the OS level.
Tap and Pay is indeed present on the 2013 Nexus 7. I just enabled NFC to confirm that the menu shows up in Settings and it does.
Tap and Pay is present that's correct but Wallet isn't there yet. More talk about it here
