So i am finally leaving behind the s l o w e s t network in the US for this beauty, my concern is my number. Is it easy to move my number over? Or should i just get a new one? I hate sending out my number and telling everyone to update it, but i also heard that its a hassle to move numbers over...anyone have some info?
My second question is does Straight Talk carry micro sim cards? Like at walmart? And since I am waiting on my N4 to arrive should I get the card from there or cheaper from Amazon....
Anyone?.....
I left Sprint for Straight Talk too (because of their slow network).
I ported my Sprint number to Google Voice, & also ported a separate number to Straight Talk. Porting was easy & straight forward, & took about 48 hours to be finalized.
They have micro SIMs, but only on their website (you can get phones & service cards from Wal-Mart, but not the SIM cards). Straight Talk usually ships with in one business day, and uses FedEx.
I just moved from sprint to t-mobile. Don't cancel sprint, just move your number as part of the T-mobile activation process, then Sprint automagically gets the memo and your account gets cancelled afterwards

Within the first 24 hours calls would come in to the new phone, but I couldn't make any. Text would go out, but not in. MMS didn't work.
After 48 hours, everything worked fine.
This was my experience, your milage may vary.

Ok i think i can live with that.... besides i use Gtalk a lot for communication with my peeps.
So to sum it up ..dont cancel Sprint, Call Straight Talk and advice them that I wish to port my number over.?
Also should I buy the micro SIM from them a day before i receive the phone so i can have it work, or should i just walk into a T-Mobile store after buying it from WalMart?
i ported from att to straight talk took only couple hours but they are on the same network so might be why so quick. They did say it could take up to 48 hrs

You need the SIM card (and service card) to activate your service on their site, so order ASAP! You'll port your number over using the website (you'll see an option to port).
Oh, you may not have a signal at first. My phone showed a signal a few hours after porting.

If you want to use T-Mobile's network on straight talk, you need to choose the T-Mobile compatible phone on the screen right before the one you posted.

I recommend the Google Voice option as well, that way it'll then be your number forever, no further porting needed, you don't have to pay for a separate text plan if you don't want/need to (although a lot of plans toss that in for free or a bundle of 'em these days...like I'm old or something ), it gives you the ability to block numbers/screen callers/set up lots of voicemail options for different people and groups, etc etc etc, just look at the service.
The Android app is pretty bare bones, but functional. Get the Google Voice app for your Chrome desktop browser, you can send/receive texts from your browser and you don't need to have any other fancy apps that do the same thing. My 2 cents, anyway.

I ported my number to Google Voice to leave Sprint. I was worried about losing MMS, but then I recieved an MMS in GV! I don't know when this change occured, but now you get a GV sms saying "MMS recieved" then your Gmail account gets an email with the picture in it. So it isn't completely integrated into the GV app or website, but close enough for me.

I I use Google Voice too. GV can get MMS messages, but I can't send them through the Google Voice app. The MMS pics usually arrive through email. I tried replying through email, but it hasn't worked out. But you can still send pics through the phone's default messaging app.

I'm planning on ditching AT&T when my contract runs out next month, and VM's $25/mo plan for the LG Optimus V is looking pretty good. It's not a deciding factor, but I wondered if anyone's had any luck tethering the NC to the VM Android phones, or seen any other benefits that carry over.
Also, if you have any feedback on VM or the phones in general, I'd love to hear it, including the best way to give their network a spin before I dump $$ into a phone. If I buy a phone that they carry used, is it any hassle getting it activated?
I recently switched, and I'm spending less than half.
Sometimes Target puts the $60 top-up cards on sale for less than face value, which is amazing.
The aosp firmware provided by the ROM Manager only does wifi tethering. Bluetooth and USB isn't available yet.
The LG Optimus V has a Quadrant benchmark score of 500 ootb with the stock Virgin Mobile firmware. The aosp firmware is 800. Overclocking with the Cyanogen panel puts it above 1000, which is top tier.
Great phone, but lacking an ARM 7 CPU for Adobe Flash and Google Earth, and an LED notification blinky.
Good to get some feedback from someone who's put the phone through its paces
To clarify a couple of things, can you share the phone's data connection with the NC over Wi-Fi (assuming you have a NC)? Has VM squawked about it at all, or do they have a way to charge you for it?
Are you finding the aosp/CM7 ROM pretty functional? It looks like some people are having camera issues, and SMS just recently started working.
Also, do those discounted top-up cards just get credited to your account, and your $25/mo comes out of the balance? Did not know you could do that

Autofocus broke after the May 23rd build, so I figure that the aosp firmware will have it fixed sometime soon. I haven't had a problem with SMS.

Yes. The Virgin Mobile top-up cards that are sold retail are credited to your account at face value and not taxed. You can change the draw-down option on your account at the virginmobileusa dot com web site.
Last week, my local Super Target had the $60 cards on sale for $56, and I got an extra 5% discount for using a loyalty card. Local sales tax is 8.25%, so I paid $57.58, which is less than face value. I had an "oh wow" moment at the cashier.
The real cost of Virgin Mobile service is much less than an AT&T contract. The only bad thing about the Virgin Mobile service that I've noticed is that they block call forwarding, which also breaks Google Voice.

D'oh! That's a good heads up, as I was strongly considering a full transition to my GV number, thinking that way I could keep a back-up prepaid on another carrier and have GV route to whichever was turned on. Does it break GV's voicemail, too? Having to call in to retrieve voicemails may be a dealbreaker.
ETA: I wonder if this is a harbinger that GV might come to VM not too far down the road: http://googlevoiceblog.blogspot.com/2011/05/google-voice-and-sprint-integration-is.html
Google voicemail integration is currently broken on Virgin Mobile phones. You'll need to check each voicemail box separately, or use the Google Voice widget instead.
In the last few weeks, Google Apps started returning a "your carrier does not support Google Voice... call them to complain" kind of message instead of a numbered error dialog.
Inbound calling through Google Voice works normally, but outbound calling is through a callback. Sprint recently got full Google Voice support, so support for the Virgin Mobile brand might be coming.
Hi there,
I successfully ordered a Nexus 4, 16Gb earlier today at 3.44PM EST
Now, I was reading about the TMobile $30 deal, and it's pretty awesome.
I was wondering if I would be able to use that sim card? Or I have to actually get a phone from TMobile?
I just found this - Is it possible to use this Sim Card with the Nexus?
Thanks

And then I just activate with the plan I want?
Awesome, thanks for your answer.

I got this $30 T-Mobile plan, and ported my phone # from VZW. During the activation process, you can choose whether you want to port your #, or get a new one. You can check if your # can be ported at: http://www.t-mobile.com/switch/default.aspx
The Nexus 4 takes a micro Sim card. Make sure you get that, and not the regular SIM!

Just port your number to Google Voice. Then you can use your same # as Caller ID for outgoing calls with all of the GV features. In addition, you can then port the number back to T-Mobile if you want.

Yes did this a while ago, when switching from regular Sprint to SERO Sprint, spent $20 on an ATT go phone and a couple of days to swap numbers back and forth. Though the Google Voice is a great idea then you never have to worry about porting ever again, plus you can even have it forwarded to land lines if you have crap service at home.
Will try with Google Voice.
Thanks everybody for your help. Much appreciated
Anyone have any experience porting numbers to Straight Talk? I am currently on T-mobile prepaid, but the data speed around here is almost nothing. :crying:
Was wondering if anyone could share their experience with porting their number. What is required, what are the steps, how long does it take?
Any help would be appreciated. :good:

You can either do it on-line when you activate your micro sim card or over the phone. I choose over the phone as I had already bought one micro sim to test out their service first and wanted to move my exiting minutes over at the same time. They sent me a new micro sim free of charge to do this. I got a CSR right away when I called at 9:00 am and the whole process took like 20 minutes. I'm not sure how long T-Mo takes to port over numbers but like I said Verizon did it in 5 minutes.

Do I need to buy the new sim first and then port the number, or set it all for porting and have them send me a sim?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
You get the new ST sim first. Wait until about 7 days before your service for the month expires. Call T-Mo and ask for your account number and PIN. That's all you need from T-Mo. When you are ready, go online to ST and activate new service. In the process you click you will be porting a number from another service. Enter the t-Mo acct. # and PIN then wait upto 24 hours or more for the process to work. It will take longer if you start it on the weekends.

ok thanks. i was a little confused about the whole thing. should be good to go now. thank you all for the help. :good:
For the last 7 years I have been a vzw customer on a dump flip phone. Ive had two terrible LG models, but the plan was cheap as I was tied on a family share plan and as a college student I didnt want to pay more. Frequency of travel for work has shown me smartphones are useful for connectivity, and with pre paid plans I the cost isnt as high as it would have been on vzw.
Enter the Nexus 4 and my stepping into the smart phone world. Ive been reading up on it and the android ecosystem from about the time the Nexus was sold out. Once it was available I placed and order and now have it in hand. Ive decided on ST with ATT towers, the sim is being delivered today.
My questions begin with activating and porting. If I want to keep my vzw number, what do I have to do with vzw? Do I have to remove that phone and number from the current family share account? Is it something that takes time or needs the account owner? My other thought was to activate the ST sim and get a new number, then use Google Voice to port the old number in the coming days or weeks and have both numbers ring to the new Nexus. Id have to pay 20$, but now I have two numbers and what ever other features GV has to offer. What should I do?
During the activation process you can port your VZW number. As long as your current number is still active on VZW, it should port just fine. Doing this will automatically cancel your number on VZW so if your contract is not up, you will be charged a ETF.
Also, if you want you can activate with a new number and port your number later. Porting to GV is fine but just be aware you can't do MMS or Group Messaging with GV.

You should port your old number if you still wish to use it. Call customer service to inform them and make the changes from there. Call Verizon to let them know you're leaving and then after that call your new carrier to make the switch.
On another note, when someone makes a major leap from a flip phone to the most advanced smartphone on the market, it will bring many challenges as you head into unfamiliar territory.

To clarify, when you said; call customer service to inform them and make changes from there. Is that the ST customer service or VZW customer service? Then call VZW and ST?
I dont have to worry about an etf, the family share plan is no longer on a 2yr contract and is currently month to month.
Call Verizon first to let them know then call straight talk. Sorry if I was not clear on that.

I'm going to be traveling soon to Belize, wondering what the best way is to be able to use my phone down there. I had a G3 last year when we went to Mexico, and the Mexico plan addon worked fine for us there for the bit we needed to use it, but I'm not sure what to do this time. I went to the Verizon Trip Planner site but they don't show the 6p of course.
So go buy another sim while I'm down there?
Or should I just turn on airplane mode and use wifi only when I can and rent a local phone?

A quick google search shows that DigiCell is the largest carrier in Belize, so that might be a good choice. And yes, if you get a sim card from them, you will have a new, temporary number. I don't think you can use your current number (different country codes, network, ect.) without some costly roaming plans from your carrier here in the US. That being said, if you really want to keep your US number, and only plan to call and receive text msg, and don't care about data then you could ask your carrier about how much roaming would cost, and see if it's really worth it.
Yeah, DigiCell is in the second link in my last post. I think that's the way I'm going for it. Unfortunately, none of Verizon's Trip Plan stuff works with the 6P, so I can't even try to see if it'll work. I'm going to contact someone there today but I expect no support because they didn't sell the phone.

Call Verizon and see if you can work out some sort of deal with them that would allow you to roam at a lower cost.
Other than that, the easiest way to go is to pop in one of DigiCell's sim, get yourself a local temporary number, and use VoIP if you want to call home.
Damned fine idea, I contacted them via Chat and they hooked me up. They said that you can just pick a similar spec'd phone in their list to do the Trip Planner stuff and they did it for me. Verified my phone will work in Belize, then gave me the $40 plan add-on for a month per line.
This is almost the same as we did in Mexico last year.
100 talk minutes, 100 texts, 100MB of data. Feels like the 90's again... LOL
Thanks again.
