Over the past couple of weeks, my Evo has started to reboot at random times. Sometimes it will go for a few days, other times, it will reboot several times a day. I've had it happen in the middle of using the phone, and in the middle of the night. Nothing has changed on the phone from an app standpoint besides updating the ones I have installed already.
I do have my phone rooted, running a stock ROM from XDA that has apps2sd enabled on it, however, I have been running in this manner for almost a year with no hiccup. I've tried looking at the log files, but they seem to be stored in volatile memory and blanked out/overwritten when the device reboots, so finding an exception or problem on the device after a reboot doesn't seem possible (or is it, and if so, how?).
Anyone with any thoughts/suggestions, please chime in. I have had my Evo for over 2 years, and am loving it still now as much as the day I got it (yes, I do have GS3 envy from my wife's phone, but the Evo does what I need it to do, and does it well)...
Thanks in advance for any tips/suggestions.
Not sure which recovery you have, but if it's Amon Ra or Smelkus, go to recovery, and do Fix Permissions (Under Others) and Repair EXT (Under Partition)
If it were me,and that didn't work, I'd do a backup of all my apps, data, messages, etc and the a complete wipe and reflash the ROM.Basically start over.
I've run a lot of ROMS that seemed to deteriorate over time and a fresh flash fixes it every time.
Are you still running it on stock battery that came with the phone? Could be that its nearly dead and you need a replacement.
Also you're rooted, apart from a2sd you use any other tweaks/mods?

I'm using Amon Ra, will i lose anything from doing fix perms and repair ext? (I will do a full nandroid first, of course).

Yes, still on the original stock battery. The most recent reboot happened in the middle of the night last night, while it was charging, though...No other tweaks/mods have been made in the time before this started occurring...the phone had been unchanged (minus app updates) for months.

Could be an idea to get a new battery, you can get decent cheap ones on amazon or ebay I think, and see if that stops the reboots.
As for fixing permissions and reparing ext you wont lose any data
Out of curiosity what ROM were/are you running when it started?

Hmm...I'm using Amon-RA 2.3 (from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026) and there is no "fix permissions" or "repair ext" under "other"...Is there a newer/better version available?
I am using the stock rooted a2sd ROM from Captain Throwback, have been for ages...
Yes, SmelkusMOD 4.3.
It's based of of RA Recovery, but includes some major improvements to the original. If you don't find it yourself I'll get you a link

No, EXT Repair and Permissions do not delete anything from your SD Card. It's kind've like running a disk check on your computer

EXT Repair is under Partition SD Card.
Fix Permissions should be under Others or something similar and yeah, Smelkus is the way to go

I'm stuck at the boot-screen of Deck's 1.2 rom, however, I can still access HBOOT and Clockwork Mod Recovery.
I don't see an explicit option, but is there a way I could access Apps or other data to save as a back-up?
I foolishly deleted my rom back-up, and last time I used Titanium Backup was a few weeks ago, so it's not a good option. Thanks!

As long as the .zip for the ROM doesn't wipe /data, you could reflash "Deck's 1.2 ROM hopefully fixing your issue and not losing your apps.

I just tried that and it didn't work either. This is maddening.
The last thing I remember doing was tinkering with the lockscreen settings in the advanced settings. I set up a rotary revamped lockscreen with Dolphin Browser HD as my custom application. I have Dolphin saved to SD too, but I don't see why such a small thing would cause constant bootloops.
It ran fine before 1.2 stable and messing with the lockscreen.

That's a good idea. I usually just use Titanium backup when I'm doing a full wipe or flashing a ROM with significant updates, but since I'd been using Deck's for a while and having no issues whatsoever really and just updating incrementally, I didn't think to backup in a while.
I had actually backed-up the ROM prior to flashing 1.2 stable, but I needed to delete it to make room to back up the newer version, and I didn't think it'd be a big deal since it was stable for a few boots. I guess I got too comfortable.
This is ridiculous, I didn't make any changes to the ROM or flash any new radios or anything of the sort that should cause a bootloop.
I do also use the Theme Manager MattedBlues theme but I've been using that for over a week or so with no issues, so I doubt that's the cause.
Oh well, thanks for the ideas though.

I think in CWM if you mount System&Data /apps you could utilize adb pull..... Also did you set up any custom partitions, a2sd, data2ext, ect... ?

Actually thanks for the suggestions guys, I managed to dig up an older version of the rom saved on my downloads folder and flashed it and booted.
For some odd reason, an older release labeled as experimental works better than the 1.2 stable...
It's strange too because I looked around Deck's thread and no one else reported any problems similar to what I was having at all.
For all intents and purposes it appears to be very stable and functional for everyone BUT me
Thanks for the suggestions though. I guess I'll hold off on flashing any roms for a while or wait for a newer version and try flashing with a full wipe.
Cool glad you got her going.
Kaaameeehameeehaaaaaa!
i started noticing that after i flashed a new rom, alot of my settings are set to the way i had them before. and some apps are already installed that would otherwise need a marketplace install..
keep in mind, i always do a wipe of cache/dalvik/sdcard
i think it started happening after i partitioned the sd card for those old sense roms that needed extra space.. cant remember..
but it seems like theres a portion of rom that isnt being wiped and all my settings are being carried over to the next rom flash..
how can i fully wipe my phone or get it back to normal?
this is weird, and i want it to stop. any ideas?
i just flashed back to amonra

Are you using ROMs that have Google back up enabled?
Also, if the zip isn't set to wipe /data and you're not wiping it then you'll still have all of your data.
That has happened to me too. Are you wiping sdext and android.secure in recovery. I always wipe those and haven't had that happen since I started doing that.
We're comin from a pure power source.
naw i turn off all that google backup stuff.
thats the thing, when i try to wipe sdext it gives me an error (from the last i remember doing it)

You should be wiping data as well when flashing new roms.
I flash vrsuperwipe everytime I flash, but I use Google backup, so when I flash a new sense ROM it saves a lot of my settings, and my SD-ext apps automatically appear. Good feature imo.

same thing happened to me so I tried repairing sdext and then re-partitioned my card and left it ext2 instead of ext3,wipe data/cache/dalvik cache/system flash superwipe, then flashed rom. don't know which one worked but it stopped. Also I noticed it mainly happens when I flash 3.0 roms but it has happened on CM7 to

You did not wipe data. If you do this you will preserve all of you apps (if they were not on card), data and system settings. This may work for you if the new ROM that you are moving to is similar enough. It can cause big problems if the structure of the ROMs is too different. You can end up with a phone that lags and has wakelocks (at best) or is not functional at all due force closes all over the place.
You should really wipe data as well before flashing a ROM and then do a selective restore of data on the new ROM.

All stock ACER apps included
You know the procedure for flashing. If not, here they are again, as it seems some people don't know.
You MUST do the wipes and formats.
Installation:
Due to issues with Version 1.7 of recovery, you may get stuck at the boot animation. Highly advise you to downgrade your recovery back to Version 1.5. It seems that some things do not get wiped and formatted correctly.
1. Wipe User Data
2. Wipe Cache
3. Wipe DalviK
4. Wipe Battery Stats
Note: Optional Formatting.
If you really want to remove EVERYTHING in Internal Memory, at this point, go to Backup and Restore. Select "Toggle backup and restore of internal storage (/data/media). Enable this setting by selecting it. By default, it is disabled. Then proceed to the formatting steps. This will format the Entire Internal Memory when you proceed.
If you want to save all the things like downloaded files, apps, pdf's etc, then DO NOT enable this toggle, and just proceed to the Format steps.
Select Go Back, Goto Mounts and Storage
1. Format System
2. Format Cache
3. Format Dalvik
4. Format Flexrom
Select Go Back and select Install from Zip File (for those of you who refuse to update their recovery, select Install zip from SD)

Not sure what your definition is of a "full wipe", but instructions can be found here:

I can guarantee you that if all you can get is to the boot animation that the problem is "pilot error".

Well, here's what I suggest. Look in my original post. I added the full instructions from my other rom.
It seems now days, the old 3 wipes just don't do a good enough job, you also have to do the formats as well.
(I thought I would be lazy and do only the 3 wipes last night, guess what? Stuck at boot animation) Did the full wipe and format, and it works as advertised.
EDIT: Guess what? This morning, I cannot flash anything, or I should say "hit and miss". Not even my daily driver. Connected to Recovery I believe.
Link re-established. Nothing wrong with the download.
If you have issues, downgrade your recovery back to version 1.5.
The issue with version 1.7 is "hit and miss". Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Well, I haven't checked the comgen1 yet (had to figure out the recovery problem first). Will root it and check it in a bit.
But, so far, I see 4 or 5 language supports are missing from the TMPL. Arabic and Aisian mostly. Also, on install the default is Polish (not a biggie as you can change it).
Other that that, it has a few extra files when compared to 3.2.
It seems I can get 1 or 2 extra sat's on gps when comparing to HC 3.2. But maybe because it's a clear day here.
Also, Acer included a couple new apps. One of them some 3d photo browser that force closes the first time you use it. Then it works normally, sort of. Seems it loses it's images off and on. Nice job acer. And, it's butt ugly. Wonder who the rocket scientist was that chose that app?
I'm not going to mod this one, but I will with the comgen1. Overall it runs good I think.

Sorry. My Bad
I was thinking about the a501_4.510.01_Com_Gen1H that was leaked out yesterday.
I already rooted it and such, but it seems to be a "Demo" version from a couple of months ago. Not only does it have a strange installer script, but a strange directory structure also. 3g also is partly working.
So basically it's of little use.

I get one in a few minutes.
The issue, is the U.S. is shutting down all the file servers due to piracy. MegaUpload, MultiUpload (server end) Now all that's left are the slow ones. Took me 45 minutes to download today.
MD5 df253e3f8825197c08a1f0a0b8c24a81
Yeah, its a pain in the bum alright, some of the slower ones already have "removed or taken down because of copyrighted material" messages coming up (deposit files)... A couple have the servers offline - upload king and upload here.
This is gonna be a major pain in the bum if the close down or lock file sharing sites, and the sites themselves may end up locking things down and removing anything they see as copyrighted material, even if its not....
Took me 10 minutes to download an 8mb kernel... I'm gonna end up a bald man before I get this rom....
And then the download stuffs up and I have start ALL OVER AGAIN.... Then to add insult to injury I have to wait 20 minutes.....

I'm going to look around for some Russian servers. Or something. I noticed one other place, but I have to find it again. They'll probably shut it down also soon.
Next thing you know, they'll shut down GitHub, and all dev comes to a standstill.
Also, I noticed today, XDA is almost at a complete stop. And I can guess who's responsible for THAT!

No problem and glad it's running.
Not sure what is going on, but in past 6 months, it seems like we now have to format things. I didn't in the past, but now I must.
Well, it is 2012, so things change.
If you have issues with the Rom, it is pure stock HC 3.2.1. I changed nothing in it. Only SU and busybox and removal of the bootloader blob and recovery. So if a game doesn't run, there is nothing I can do about it. It's an Acer deal.
However, I do have one on my notebook, that has "0" acer stuff in it.
Firstly, what a great forum. I have dabbled with my phone purely on what I have gleaned from here, so keep up the great work.
I have viewed for quite a time but it is a pleasure to make my first post, so go easy on me.
I am a total newbie when it comes to phones although I have a lot of experience building PCs for many years. I have an unbranded S2 (prev XEU) which I updated with ICS OTA a few days ago. I am now on LPS. I then successfully rooted using Rachmat’s work [GUIDE] ROOT/UNROOT Stock ICS Firmware without flashing unsecure kernel), which was a breeze to do (apart from initially putting it in download mode instead of recovery and wondering why I couldn’t get any further!!).
I have since installed Titanium Backup and frozen a number of apps.
I want to share some of the problems which I have experienced after updating to ICS:
- I get the wifi problem where connectivity is suddenly lost and necessitates a reboot. After a reboot the battery level dramatically drops. I checked the router (VM Superhub) and strangely it had defaulted to factory settings. I have a LAN which runs well with 2 wired PCs, 2 laptops on wifi, 2 iPod Touch and a BB Playbook – I had to set them up again after reconfiguring the router. Needless to say, the wifi problem still exists and I have to reboot the phone every now and again.
- A strange problem with my internal SD storage – before updating I had about 9gb full which included a number of videos, etc. Following the update it still showed 9gb but my videos were gone and the USB storage folder showed 0kb. Adding up what I actually had only amounted to about 4gb and I had to erase the internal SD to get my space back.
- Battery consumption is still very poor – I had not noticed any difference using ICS. I still only get about 10 hours from a full charge if I am lucky, with a moderate amount of use. I have stopped auto-sync for everything, dimmed the display as much as possible and various other tips and I hope there will be an improvement. I have started using Juice Defender again although I am not convinced on that one.
Rooting has made no difference to the wifi issue and I will reset the router and start again when I get time tomorrow.
Thanks again
Tim

I too used Rachmat's quick and easy guide on how to root & unroot ICS firmware and found it so simple and great to use. I have flashed a number of different custom ICS roms since rooting XWLP8 and my counter has not gone up at all and there is no yellow triangle. I recommend this method for anyone using ICS.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
Did you wipe everything after updating to ICS?
About battery dropping after reboot, it's normal (at least I didn't find a fix).. I mean, it's normal that the battery indicator shows a wrong information.. if you just let your phone, you will notice the indicator going up without charge.. after reboot sometimes the battery indicator doesn't show the real battery level.
And about your battery lofe, you should be more specific.. like how many time of screen on, calls, if you are using 2G, 3G or wifi, if you are playing games or videos etc.

I had WIFI problem with the LPQ and LPS update (last saturday OTA) fixed it.
After updating to ICS I erased my internal USB data which solved the problem where my free space was reported inaccurately.
I didn't do a factory reset.
With regard to phone/battery usage, I tend to use it for browsing, email and occasionally music. Don't play many games on it, especially CPU/graphic intensive games. Very occasionally I will watch a video but not many and I fully expect the battery to discahrge quickly.
To give an example, this morning at 09:00 my battery was at 83%. It is now at 41% some 5.5hrs later. Screen is 0% display and has been during this time, all syncing is off, wifi has been on perhaps 10-15 minutes max, no GPS or bluetooth. I have browsed the web, checked emails, etc - used the phone for approximately 30 minutes in 5.5hrs. by the way, JD is showing x2.17.
Thank you

Are you with CWM recovery? If so, do a nandroid backup first and then wioe everything. Wipe data, cache and dalvik cache.. this won't affect your sd card (both internal and external), but will set the system as default, with no apps or data (such as google accounts).
When you change your system (specially in your case, when you moved from a GB to iCS rom) you should wipe everything.
Also, about battery life, only after 3/4 full cycles you will be able to see how it really is.
But since I've never used stock kernel, can't say much about it, but Abyss is being a great kernel for me.

Do you refer to the CWM.zip file I put on the external SD card from Rachmat's tutorial?
If so, I still have it there. Do you mean go into recovery, install CWM.zip from external SD, and Nandroid backup will be an option?
thanks

Thank you for your help.

Yes, you can use this CWM.zip, you will find an option for backup (there won't be mention to nandroid, so don't look for it).

Okay, just so that I get this straight...
I go into recovery
Install CWM.zip from sdcard
backup using backup/restore in recover
Wipe data/factory reset from recovery
Wipe cache partition
Where is dalvik cache? Also, will not the factory reset put me back to GB 2.3.4?
Sorry to appear dumb but I just want to get it clear in my head.
Thanks again
Tim
Dalvik is under advanced in cwm.
You will do everything under cwm, ok? Enter normal recovery, apply cwm.zip and do everything in cwm recovery.
No, it won't take you back to gb.

Sorry, just one more thing. Once I have reset/wiped using recovery do I just restart my phone and use or do I have to restore the backup?
Tim
Just reboot. The backup is just for the case of something going wrong.. the nandroid backup backs up everything.. I mean EVERYTHING.. so if you wipe everything and restore the backup it will be as if you didn't wipe anything.

I have completed everything and I am in the process of reorganising my phone, having reimported contacts, etc.
Thank you very much for your help. It is much appreciated.

I cant get this method to work despite numerous attempts. Not sure where I am going wrong.
It all appears to work okay (Superuser is in the Apps menu) but when I run Root Checker it says it is not rooted and this does appear to be true because the latest Total Recall will not work either.
Maybe someone else could try Root Checker and confirm that they are actually rooted.

Glad it worked.
I suggest you to try other kernels... but remember, when you flash other kernel, give it some time untill you make conclusions, since, as I said, 3 or 4 full charges are needed to settle things up.

All you have to do is install cwm.zip onto external SD card and install SU-Installer-Signed.zip onto your internal SD (I tried it on external but CWM didn't recognise the file). Reboot into recovery, then choose install update from SD card and install cwm.zip . Once that's installed click on install zip from SD card and install SU-Installer-Signed.zip and once that's installed just go back and reboot.
If Superuser is in your apps list then I'm fairly certain you're rooted. I did exactly what you did and was able to install custom roms, overclock and every app that needs root (Titanium Backup, Rom Manager CWM) asked for permission and it was granted. Give it another try and see how you go.

Hi all,
I'm currently on Android 4.2.2 (rooted, UK version, SIM unlocked) and would like update to 4.3.
My Baseband version is I9505XXUAMDM.
Does anyone know which rom file I should use? I'd like to retain root permissions if possible and to use an original (or close as possible) Samsung rom.
Many thanks

I ended up using this which I'm really liking: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2352258
And the 'Battery Percentage 1 & Semi Transparent Status Bar' from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2408258

So you were stuck on the XXUAMDM build and simply followed the instructions on the link you gave and all is working well?
Also I have philz recovery, is this an issue or can this be used instead of CWM?
Thanks

Yes I was on the I9505XXUAMDM version (see attached image) and just followed the instructions EXCEPT I didn't use ClockworkMod, I'm using 'TWRP Recovery'. I downloaded the 'GALAXY S4 Google Play Edition 4.3 v1.3 CoOoL_BoY.zip' file, placed it on my memory card, booted in to TWRP, wiped the parts as instructed, then ran the installer. All worked nicely!
I backed it all up first (mostly using titanium backup pro), then restored the programs/program data from it after, so I was up and running pretty quickly after.

Thanks, I shall give that a go then
Philz recovery is basically CWM, so as far as I'm aware you can also run the zip from within philz, However can anyone confirm this?
Sorry to hijack the thread by the way!
---------- Post added at 08:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:21 PM ----------
Also when you backed up with titanium pro did you choose to do the batch operation and backup system settings and apps or just the apps?
Thanks

I backed up the apps and their settings (but ignored the system apps). Good luck
So I installed the rom and it is more stable but is still crashing alot!
In Philz recovery when you wipe/factory reset there are two options:
Wipe/factory reset
Clean for a new rom
In guessing I should have chose the clean for a new rom option? I mean the phone still has some of my old data on it so I'm sure something went wrong.
I'm debating just flashing to stock rom and giving up! cab anyone suggest anything?
Cheers

Yeah you should have chosen the 'Clean for new rom' option. It's likely crashing as it still has settings/files left behind that aren't compatible with your new rom. Mine has been very stable since the upgrade, so it's worth trying again with a proper wipe

So it turns out the battery is ruined on the phone, I thought it was the rom initally and I will give it a fresh install when I can.
In the press samsung have stated that some S4 batteries are faulty, Mine has swollen up and the phone no longer lies flat!
Also it only holds charge for about 20 mins!
Anyhow, I have spoken to the local service centre and I can get a free replacement, good news, however will I have to flash my phone back to stock firmware? Or is my warranty still good?
I can borrow a friends battery and flash back to stock fw but will I need to do this or can I just go ahead and flash back on my rom of choice?
I'v never overclocked the phone or played with any battery voltage settings etc, so I think it must be a genuine faulty batch.
Any suggestions?

Nope you can leave the phone software as is, it's only the battery that's at issue. If they want to see the phone just say it's private and you don't want them looking at it. Maybe even take the battery out in front of them as you're talking at the counter so that the phone is turned off, and they have the battery to instantly look at. Should be an obvious / easy swap out for them...

No worries, good luck! It does have the default Google 'People' app, which is the same as the Contacts one. And for music I installed the Google 'Play Mucic' app which isn't bad. The only thing I miss from the Samsung 'TouchWiz' rom is their camera app.

I didn't know the People app was the same, cheers for that
I went for winamp but tbh its layout is awful and I found it very buggy that and my phone battery was already swollen up! haha.
Will report back with results!
thanks once again.
Got a new battery and not had any issues with the rom at all, only issues I did find was that having my SIM PIN enabled got the phone stuck when it booted, I had to take my sim out and put it in my girlfriends phone to disable the sim lock, after that no issues.
I'm in two minds of if I should reflash it or not tho as it now has a **** ton of my apps, I have used titatnium backup before but I find it to copy my buggy software and back it up then reloading it on my new rom hahah!
But a fresh flash might set it straight for longer avoiding me any future headaches... hahah
Anyhow thanks for all the advice.
Peace
