Tethering on the T-Mobile vs. Google versions - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I read somewhere online that someone said if I buy from T-Mobile instead of Google there might be more of a chance of them tracking me while I'm tethering. Is that true at all or was it just a guess? Just want to make sure cause I'm going to be getting it from T-Mobile on the 14th (or 15th if some of these rumors are true), but if it's true I will just go ahead and order it from the Play Store tonight.
Since it will probably come up as to why I'm getting the T-Mobile version instead of the Play Store version, I'll explain why. My family has been on T-Mobile for a long time now and my Dad doesn't see why as to not sign a contract since we have no intentions of leaving anytime soon. Also because it's $200 on contract and $350 off.
Edit: I did search this before hand but I came across both opinions of T-Mobile being able to track it and T-Mobile not being able to track it. A final word would be nice.

I'm on T-Mobile and I've never had a problem tethering with my galaxy nexus without a tethering add-on.

Rooted or stock? (I've read that makes a difference?)
I haven't had a problem tethering in the past but I haven't used a T-Mobile phone in awhile. I just remember when T-Mobile thought we were tethering when we were actually using our regular phone data and it kept redirecting me to a blocked site -_-

this might help:

I have truly unlimited data with t-mobile, so I was wondering about tethering as well. So my question is do I need any third party apps or rooting require ?
Thanks

T-mobile actually charges you for tethering , to avoid the tethering charges , most people root and then tether , as the stock ROM redirects you to "add-on" tethering for extra "$15" a month
So Rooted means no tethering charges by the carrier
---------- Post added at 11:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:05 PM ----------
My guesses , T-mobile N4 will redirect you to the "ADD ON " page ,
Whereas PlayStore's unlocked version wouldnt

Dang maybe I should get the Play Store version just to be safe? I can always use my upgrade on a future phone and just sell it for money.

If you're going to get a phone with your upgrade you should wait, but it from Google now for 100 more, then get a subsidised phone and sell at retail cost, make money in the transaction

[q] wifi tethering and root access

Ok Guys my brother just got his mytouch 4G and he over heard that Tmobile charges 14.99 a month for tethering so I thought for him to avoid that problem he would have to gain root access. So my question is this true or not ????????

Sounds right to me. You can't tether for free until you do so as far as I know.
Just looking into how to do this as I know someone who just got one and would love to have that ability for free.
My phone isn't rooted yet (just got a replacement) and I tethered my netbook using the stock wifi hotspot app that came with the phone.
It let me tether just fine without any problems. When I went to T-Mo's website, it shows up as regular data usage.

Free...for now. Sooner or later (likely the former) TMob will start charging as they've already released details on the $14.99 tethering/hotspot plan.
The alternative is to root and use and use another wifi hotspot app (e.g. the Android wifi tethering app).
T mobile rep charged me then called customer and had them remove the extra monthly charge.

Considering purchase

I am really considering buying a Nexus 7 but am curious if it can be tethered to a GSM GNEX running on Tmobile without paying for the hotspot feature. I have searched the forum but no threads have been specific enough to my question. Thanks guys.
maybe ask in the genx forum, it will be easier to find someone there with a n7 then someone here with a genx
neither my rooted g1 nor my rooted g2 will connect via adhoc to my unrooted n7. I've been busy lately so I haven't attempted to fix this but I'm sure it will be very easy to do, there may even be custom roms for the n7 with the proper wpa supplement but I haven't looked into it yet as its not a bother nor have I the time.
point is it will work for some phones right out of the box with little or no effort, can't attest to it working with yours

appreciate the response. Thank you.
I use my lte Gnex and it works just fine.
Worst come to worse u could prolly use foxfi app
Do this
Go to a store that sell nexus7, turn on hotspot, see if u can connect
Oh I think I misunderstood your question.
Most custom rom for Gnex allow you to tether without paying the premium for hotspot. But, it uses your data plan. If you don't have unlimited, the data used will still count against your data plan allowance. There is no way around that. And if there was I don't think you would find it here :/

I'm on tmobile and have the Gnex, I've had since April. I've been using the hotspot on it with no problems.... I've never received a notice from tmobile. I'm now using foxfi app. I don't think tmobile can tell when we use the gnex as a hotspot.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
They can't, because using foxfi is just making your data available to another device. It doesn't hide the data usage just allows another device to use ur plans data. Which they aren't allowed to block(vzw got "In trouble" for blocking apps that allow you to use ur data on another device. Tho they CAN block unlimited users from using them, they aren't allowed to FORCE tiered users to pay the hotspot premium to use the data on other devices)

There is not software from Tmo on your Gnex; just use the native hotspot feature on stock and you are good to go, the beauty of vanilla! I’ve been using this combo for weeks, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

That's what I was trying say....the GNex is one of those devices that T-Mobile can't "see" you tethering/hot spotting with. I've been doing it since May with not a peep from T-Mobile.

but I agree that the plan cannot be beat. 100 minutes, unlimited text and unlimited data with no throttling for $30, you cant touch that. Plus you can use their unlimited WiFi calling feature on that plan.

There is ZERO fine print anywhere stating throttling. On every other plan that has it, it is easy to find out when you get throttled. A call to customer service confirmed this. It is only available online on tmobile.com and walmart.com. It is pretty new.......just saw it about a week ago.
Plus, remember, Tmobile just announced true unlimited data for post and pre paid, but this is the cheapest/lowest minute one I can find.

The funny thing is, how could we even complain about throttling at 5gb for that price??? But for true unlimited? WOW!
I'm not complaining, because this is about the only good plan in the entire US. But I'm for sure getting a phone to take advantage of it, Tmobile is the underdog, they need to be the mass sales/low margin company!

Does AT&T have Nexus 4? Reason for asking is

I don't want the phone to be recognized by them as something they carry to avoid data plan. Not completely familiar with this phone (like the S2/i9100 etc.)
Thanks,
It will be. Its not an international phone that is only sold in other countries and shipped here. Its designed to work with all GSM US carriers.

Actually, my dad and I have been using the n4 with no data plan. Once I activated the phone I had my data blocked. Some people were saying that they got changed from the $15 unlimited dumb phone to the smartphone plan. However, I still had my data blocked since day one. You could even ask for it to be blocked before you can't your n4. You can block your data with no problem.

The N4 has already been flagged by AT&T as a smartphone and multiple people have posted. Figuring out whether a phone's dumb or smart is very easy for AT&T (or any other carrier) as the first eight characters of the IMEI identify the make and model (Type Allocation Code) of the phone.

Annoyed. Got the dreaded ATT text that I wasn't using the correct data plan for the nexus 4. Was using it on $10 non smart data plan.
AT&T Free Msg: Did you know a data plan is required for your Smartphone? We have added an appropriate data plan. Learn more at www.att.com/dataplans.
Online management shows phone as being unrecognized but they apparently know the phone is a smartphone.
Even the email I got from ATT says
"For whatever reason, our records indicate your Smartphone does not have an eligible data plan. We have added an appropriate Smartphone data plan for your device"
So unlike the Galaxy nexus, ATT does force the $30 data plan. I guess the LG Optimus G is so similar to the Nexus 4 ATT can see it as a smartphone.
It's weird cause the international Galaxy S3 was never recognized on my account when I had it on the $10 data plan.

Mk2, stock. It's under settings/connections/data usage. What's 4G? Hahaha! Or this lte?? Sounds made up ? it was 3g tethering. I just tether my laptop and watch Netflix and do a lil bill paying and such. Maybe with MK2 and the knox plague sprint has a lil spy ware in there? They've never messed with me before and I've had 11gb+ of data usage before..

Well, you got caught! You were shoplifting from Sprint and they caught you. Either stop stealing or get cut off. It amazes me sometimes that people are surprised when they get caught. 8GB+ a month on 3G, its obvious that you are tethering. Do I tether, hell yes! But if Sprint caught me, I would stop tethering or pay for the service. With their new lifetime data plans they include 5gb of tethering in one of their plans for cheaper than any other provider. They caught you because of the desktop Netflix sever you were connected to opposed to the mobile Netflix server.
It's kind of funny how xda comes down hard on people that post links to warez or movie/music bootleg sites but they turn a blind eye to stealing from Sprint with hacked tethering. Anyway, good luck with Sprint and keeping your account.

Thanks, although I am pretty aware I was caught. I have used mass amounts of data before without tethering. Keeping Sprint won't be a problem as I haven't been tethering. I am not surprised at getting caught, it isn't like I'm crying about the audacity of this company telling me how I can/can't use my unlimited data. I was only asking if anyone knew if a 3rd party app shows the usage as data or tethering still. I will look into this plan you mentioned though.
