I have a few questions regarding the nexus 10 storage as i'm undecided on it.
What are the options to increase the memory? Will it work by simply putting a usb in? Would it then allow me to transfer files from usb to the nexus and vice versa?
Thanks
It is likely that a usb otg cable will work. Even if not supported, it likely will be with a custom rom.

Hey,
Does anyone here have the USB adapter for their Samsung Tab 10.1? Can you connect a USB hub to it (maybe a powered USB hub)?
I take lots of full resolution photos, and would like to use the Tab to transfer data from SD card to portable USB hard drive.
What I want to avoid is having to first copy the SD card contents to the Tablet, then connect the tablet to the portable HD to unload the photos. That seems like unnecessary wear/tear on the flash memory.
If the USB host on the Tab 10.1 can handle a hub, then I can connect both the SD card and portable HD at the same time...hopefully the Tab would make use of it's RAM (the 1GB spec) to transfer chunks of data at a time, without resorting to using the internal Flash memory.
Am I right about that? The Android OS doesn't use the flash memory as a page file for working memory the way desktop computers do with drives?
bump - hoping someone can answer. Thanks.
There is a thread in development about a homemade usb adapter, and it works successfully with a hub. The samsung adapter isn't available yet, but should work the same

pokey9000 figured out how to force the unit in host mode. All you need to do is put 20ohms of resistance (easiest way with two 10Ohm resisters in series) between pins 13 and 15.
He also tested using a powered hub and was able to connect to multiple items at once. A regular hub might work for a few thing that are low powered but if you plan to have two hard drives, it better be powered.
has anyone found a usb to sd card adapter for multiple sd cards?
Did you ever figure this out? I want to do the same thing.
I know on the Galaxy Nexus you can root it and using a OTG cable and hook up an external HD/USB drive to extra room.
Is there any reason why this wouldn't be possible with the Nexus 7? Will there be performance issues in say streaming a movie off a USB drive to the 7?

USB storage is available at /dev/sda, all you need to do is mount the device which requires root access, which is easily done.
Bear in mind that any external storage will either have to be self-powered or flash based unless you want to drag a power supply for the HDD around with you as well, as the tablet won't supply enough current to power anything other than very low-wattage devices.
Hi all,
I'll tell you first what started this whole exercise.
I ran out of room on my Nexus 7!
I discovered it was because I try to be backup crazy.
I ended up mainly having too many Clockwork mod backups. I think the proper term is Nandroid Backup (let me know if that is correct).
Plus, I had too many Podcasts stored. BeyondPod settings needed to be adjusted.
OK, so just deleting the Nandroid backups would be stupid, I wanted to copy them to an SD card I have installed on my Asus TF300T.
I have Samba (filesharing) installed on all my devices so I can copy wirelessly from Android device to basically any device.
But it turned out, those files are just too big and would take forever.
I had purchased a long time ago, the cable for my Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G, which allows you to attach a USB device to the micro USB port on the phone. Now I can't find the cable, so I will have to order a new one. And I even forgot what the name of the cable is? Can you refresh me on what I should order?
But I have an Asus TF300T tablet with the keyboard dock.
The keyboard dock has a standard USB port on it.
So I figured that it might be possible using the Nexus 7's included USB cable and plug into the dock's USB port.
If it is possible, what do I need to do? I don't want to cause any damage to either device. What settings or software would I need?
And, yes I know I could copy the files to a PC then recopy them back to the SD memory card.
But I'm trying to do a direct copy which will be faster. Essentially, only copying the data once not twice.
Thanks!
Now if I could only find that stupid cable!
Rob
PS OK, this is the only downside to the Nexus 7, I guess this is a good reason to always have a memory expansion slot.

If you have a USB On-The-Go cable - you should be able to just plug it into your device and then directly into the keyboard and it should be all set.
For the memory expansion issue - you can plug a flash drive into the USB Female adapter from your OTG cable. Based on the fact that you have nandroid backups I'm guessing you're unlocked/rooter, so just install the app "StickMount" from the play store and you should be all set to access media/files from your external flash drive.

Thanks.
Since I posted the message only 10 minutes ago, I found the adapter.
Funny, the only name of the adapter on the Samsung box is 'USB Adapter'. Real descriptive!
Yes, sorry, left that part out of the original story. I'm rooted and have CWM installed on the Nexus 7.
And I already have Stickmount installed on the Nexus 7, I guess I must have read the name of the app in one of the forums and thought it would come in handy.
What is a 'USB on the Go' cable?
Isn't the cable that came with the Nexus 7 (it is usually plugged into the charger base, but you can use it to plug into your PC as well). I used that cable to attach to the PC so I could root the Nexus. Is there a difference, mind you the USB port on the dock is the same kind of USB port on your PC?
Thanks again!

I am planning to buy nexus 7 (16 gb) but I live in a place where I can not always rely on cloud storage.
I was wondering if I can plug in USB pen drives using ITG cable and do data transfer (both way) on nexus 7 ? This works perfectly fine on my rooted galaxy nexus (using stick mount app) .
Please let me know if someone has tried this on nexus 7.
Thanks !
Lots of threads on this already. Yes, it has been tried and proven by hundreds, if not thousands of N7 users. It works exactly as it does on your rooted galaxy nexus with stickmount and an OTG-usb adapter. Works with thumbdrives, sd and microsd with a card reader, and some external usb hd's.
I was wondering, what's the largest size USB stick or drive that somebody has succesfully mounted to one of these? I currently have a 32GB SSD on a USB enclosure connected to mine and it works fine but I'm looking to have a lot more storage (my music collection alone is about 60GB plus I'd like to include some videos). I tried hooking up a 500GB USB HDD that I have but it didn't work (I'm asuming because the HDD takes more power from the USB port than the SSD) so I was thinking of buying a large USB stick but I wanted to make sure it would work before wasting my money.
Additionally, I'm able to connect a USB stick to either one of the USB ports, but I can't connect 2 USB sticks at the same time (one on each port obviously). Is this normal behavior or is something wrong?
FYI, my unit has an RK3188 CPU and I'm using Malaysk's ROM (I couldn't do it on the stock ROM either so I don't think it's the ROM).
