You can use "wine", on terminal use this
Code:
sudo apt-get install wine
and you can run *.exe on ubuntu
Enviado desde mi X10i

as you all know odin in vmware, wine, and vbox doesn't detect the usb,
so it is practically useless
you're stuck with windows,
let's just live with it lol

So heimdall doesn't work either ? I've only heard of it never tried

well it could work if any dev manages to convert odinable packages to heimdall packages then it would work,
as of now no one has ever managed to get it done for our device,
heimdall was actually designed for the galaxy s series

[Q] installing nand android with mac

is it the same thing as installing it with a windows computer?
got tired of windows mobile 7, so going back to android,
angry birds!
but yea, sorry so would anyone care to help me out?
really? no one guys?
I have never used a mac, but i did read about it something like 6 months ago when i was stuck on the wm6.5 test rom.
From what i read, you have to set up an emulated windows environment on your mac, and then do some additional stuff to make all the commands and such point to the right place. To be honest, it sounded like quite a pain in the ass, compared to using somebody else's windows computer.
Wish I could be of more help man, best of luck. Hopefully somebody with better unix experience can come along and point you to a real good guide. Or you find someone to let you use their Windows pc.

You should install a version of Windows via bootcamp. Just type in Spotlight " bootcamp" and it should show up and follow its instructions. Shouldnt be too complicated. then after install Windows onto bootcamp partition, set up as u normally use it on windows. Bootcamp allows you to run Windows ( XP, win 7, Vista) natively on Mac with its own Win drivers ( install using your mac installation disk after windows has finished setup). Hope this help.
yeaa i know about bootcamp, just dindn't wanna install windows on my mac, sigh but thanks guys for the help.
Just put all the required files on your sd card, take your phone and usb cable to walmart, and use one of their laptops that are out on display

I don't blame you for not wanting to install Windows on your Mac. This might be a totally dumm suggestion too as I have absolutely no knowledge of Mac. But could you not buy a cheap external hard drive and install Windows on the external hard drive and just use the hard drive to run the windows or the above mentioned bootcamp off of the external hard drive. Don't really know if you can do this or not but just a thought.
Yes you can run windows on another HDD. It's possible.

Odin SUCKS for a Mac User

Long time abuser of Android devices and very happy with the SGS2. However, as Mac user, the tools required to mod the SGS2 are not Mac friendly. So I'm turning to the excellent minds of the XDA community to help me enjoy my device.
I run virtualization software which in the past was more than sufficient for any device I wanted to root, hack, etc. So using VMware installed Kies and downloaded the drivers fine (I've even manually installed the drivers to make sure I got them all). The problem primarily is with Odin. In download mode, the device is not recognized. So I figured it was VMware so I tried Parallels and Virtualbox with the same results. Even tried Heimdall which is supposedly more VM friendly but no luck.
Am I just overlooking something or do I really need to use a PC? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. TIA

I used Odin through bootcamp with no problems at all.
But heimdall should run natively on mac and Linux, you just need mono.
? I thought EVERYTHING sucked for a MAC user....

I have not got a mac, but have done the following:
ODIN on native PC
ODIN in VMware virtual machine (host = windows xp, guest = windows xp)
Heimdall in Windows (native)
Heimdall in VMWare virtual machine (host = windows xp, guest = ubuntu 11.04)
I don't know what the drivers are like on VMWare for OSX... But I had no issues in any of the above, beyond occasional glitches with ODIN that are likely due to poor coding, or just limited error checking, given it's internal software not really intended for our use.
Bootcamp is the way to go. I also tried with vmware but I think there is some strange stuff with network sharing which messes up the usb connection, both to osx and the vm.

Thanks everyone for your quick replies. Bootcamp did the trick.

Heimdall not working.... help!

Hello, I'm a Mac user who has no access to a Windows computer whatsoever and is stuck on the DK28 modem. Whenever I try to flash anything or use any command in Heimdall, it says "Failed to detect compatible device." I've used all the usb cables I have, all of them work when the phone is on but not in download mode. I have no idea what's wrong. Please help!
I have successfully used it on an linux machine. I had to get the libusb-1.0 library though.
I have no idea about Mac though.

Try that link maybe?
Heimdall for Mac doesn't work with the Epic. Samsung has to update something in the SBL to make it work. Heimdall does, however, work perfectly on Linux and Windows. Any chance you could use a friends computer or perhaps one at the library?

Unfortunately no. The phone (in download mode) is totally undetectable by OS X's kernel. Even virtual machines running on OS X can't see the phone. You'll have to use a livecd or bootcamp.
You could also do what I do and setup your Mac to dual boot. I keep Windows 7 on mine for just these occasions such as Epic modding

[Q] Flashing via Linux

Hi Guys,
i recently installed Ubuntu 11.10 as my primary OS. I had been flashing a lot when i had a system with Windows 7, but the system i have now will not run the OS efficiently and thus my second option is Ubuntu.
I was wondering if there is any way to flash ROMs from a linux system, preferably Ubuntu.
Thanks,
Sam

Tried ODIN via Wine ... Doesn't detect the phone...
Really is there no other way?? How come i can't flash a Linux Kernel based OS from a Linux System (kinda ironical isn't it :'()??
I'm a linux user too and I tried almost everything I think.
Wine : It'll not work. No proper usb driver support.
Virtualbox : Odin detects the phone but fail when the flash process start. The reason is that Virtualbox acts as a wrapper between windows and Linux' usb so some data are modified.
In all cases, don't try anything with odin because it can result with a bricked phone if data transmmitted to the phone are incorrect during bootloader flashing.
So, I recommand to flash only with cwm via update.zip or adb push. It's possible to mount a rfs file on linux and then push all files via adb.
@android_murphy : Create an update.zip with your zImage. Use the zip used for CM7 kernel.

I'm also Linux user. Virtualbox does not work. But with VMwarePlayer (XP or Win 7) ODIN works fine. That's unfortunately the only way...
I use ubuntu as my main os and windows for flashing It's always good to have a working windows somewhere for odin

Yeah CWM update.zip is a good option but not everyone provides the entire rom via update.zip. I guess only the CM7 one is in that format.

Thanks for the info, it works well with VMWare

Can I root my 4.4.4 NI2 device... with my Mac??

I have tried multiple times to get Odin working on all 3 of my Mac computers, there is this JOdin3 thing that is supposed to work for macs. Sadly it will not work. It can't find the pit file. Is ther any other way for us mac users? If not, will there ever be a way? Any bit of info can be helpful. I was rooted and running custom Roms before, but I had to bring my phone back to stock to take it into Verizon and now I am stuck with no root again.
Thanks in advance!!

I was never able to get JOdin to work on either of mine. One thought would be to try regular odin in a virtual machine, but I can't say if that works(I have a backup windows desktop).
Good luck!

From what ive heard its highly suggested to NOT use a vm or you could brick your phone, i couldnt even get the vm to detect my phone(which is what lead to research and finding out not to do it that way), I'd say in any case your only option really is indeed using a windows machine by whatever means unless someone magically produces a pit file(which is what heimdall/jOdin require) for our phone.

It's not the pit file with heimdall it's the large tar that is the problem as stated in this thread. We have a pit file. We can use ADB to push the files but that's very risky too.

In my case the VM works for me on linux and detects my phone but when I rebooted into download mode Odin would not detect the phone. As Rakuu said it is highly suggested not to go that route. So for the OP as he said, go with the cheap Windows machine to stay on the safe side.
