[Q] Portrait Mode on the Nexus 10 - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Most of the reviews I have read have said that the Nexus 10 is meant to be used in landscape mode more so than portrait mode, and that when using it in portrait mode it was somewhat awkward. I generally prefer using tablets in portrait mode for most things.
How bad is it to use this tablet in portrait mode? Does the aspect ratio make it fairly unwieldy to use? I currently have a galaxy tab 10.1 which I have no problem using in portrait mode for reading, playing games, etc. How different will this be?

It won't be any different for you if you already like it.
What they meant (probably) was that unlike phones and the Nexus 7, Portrait mode is the main position you hold them in and you'll feel 100% comfortable because of their size. Where as Nexus 10 is a bigger tab that will make it a bit uncomfortable for some users when they use it on portrait as it was designed for landscape.
It is not a tablet specific thing, more of a size + general feel.

Almost all tablets and laptops are designed for widescreen use because that is the best for viewing media and multi-tasking and even the iPhone is now widescreen which leaves the iPad even more of an oddity.
Also on the Nexus 10 with it's super high resolution screen you should be able to see the whole width of any Web page without the need to scroll horizontally on landscape and just need to scroll down for very long Web pages the same way as on a high resolution laptop.

Personally, I'd argue that with the vertically-linear way websites tend to be laid out, with only one small column that you really care about and the rest just being ads, menus or other random links, 'tall screen' is the way to go for web browsing. Look at any forum on the internet, and I bet you'll find that there's a column in the middle of the page containing the actual posts of the thread and whatnot, and that you'll never really care about what's next to that stuff. But that's probably going to be awkward to use.

They just mean that skinny tablets look awkward on portrait mode

(here you have a surface which is 16:9, the nexus 10 is 16:10 so it's not THAT skinny)

Not sure what I think
EDIT: posted in wrong forum *sigh* Mods feel free to do what you wish
I think it is an underpowered netbook.
Looks ok but I think I will stick to my netbook.
I will stick with pure Google experience tablet ... The one without customization ... The one that will receive update directly ... The one that is BLESSED by Google!
I don't know which one, probably the XOOM ... The Motorola Android tablet.
I really can't understand the success of tablets. I see their potential as a casual browsing device, but they fill a hole between phones and computers which wasn't all that gaping. They are completely a luxury object, without the nature of practicality and necessity which phones and traditional computers have, and at the overblown price some are sold at, its a wonder they shift so many units.
But the weirdest thing, I think, is rear facing cameras on tablets. I mean, who wants to whip out a device the size of a book or larger to take a photo? And yet it seems to go unquestioned, even celebrated.

Tablet is nice ... more portable compare to laptop ... and bigger screen compare to mobile phone.
I need one and I need one now
Because I can see me using it in the couch ... bed ... sofa ... etc.
And yes, I don't need rear camera .... and give me WIFI only ...
No wifi only = no deal ...

drawing work flow

Just sat here adding some colour to a sketch and wondered if l was using the best methodology.
l sketch,
add a layer, draw the base colour
add a layer, add detail
add a layer, add shading / shadows
I adjust the opacity of the layers until I am happy with the result, or give up on the process half way through.
if I'm doing a comic style drawing, l will add a layer to do my ink outline before doing my colouring.
I'm struggling though. I've always been good with pencils and sketching, but I'm struggling to find a colouring technique I'm comfortable and happy with in the digital medium.
what process do you go though to build up a drawing?
http://blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/articles/20-tutorials-for-learning-digital-painting-techniques
Always wanted to be able to draw, and after a few hundred games of Draw Something it just made me want to learn even more, will check out the link and see if i can learn anything
Might take a while before my work shows up on XDA tho
I've had quite a steep learning curve when I got the Galaxy Note 1, two years ago this November. I remember referencing the monochromatic watercolors of Alex Ross' Batman side head profile. It's just copying exactly what you see and matching the values as practice.

And before that, I learned with a bit of frustrations of how is not as detailed as I wanted my first colored illustration of Arya Stark with the Sketchbook Express.
Only 800 by 1280 pixels. I wasn't happy.
I usually mute or tone down the transparency of my initial general guidelines, and a 2nd layer for a final detailed pencil. I lessen the transparency of that again when using the airbrushing technique of the Sketchbook Pro.
I draw inspiration from the top illustrators from DeviantArt.com. Of course they use the real full Photoshop with the pro Wacom digitizer, some going 5k pixel resolutions for high details!
Here's the 40-step process of my wife's front face portrait. 8 hours total.

There are descriptions for each step.
(For the benefit for others would like to learn the techniques)
I need to be doing new ones again. Keep up with this Note digital art forum series. I'll contribute some techniques from time to time. Cheers.

One hand UI (EMUI feature)

Well, now as everyone has started the trend of 5.5 inch to 6 inch screen phones, we are not behind others but we are neck to neck with others infact we are leading this with our One hand UI feature .
As the trend is becoming popular with the large screens, sometimes its very difficult to manage the phone specially when you are typing with one hand while walking or if you are having a smaller palm but love the phone with larger screen. This is very well addressed by the Honor developers as they have focused on this mass of people to provide a comfort for them as well to type and use the phone with only one hand with one hand UI feature. Here you can use only one hand to type easily with smaller keayboard on smaller screen (well a virtual screen within your actual 5.5 inch screen). Please refer below screenshots to use this feature.
Go to Setting--> Smart Assistance-->One-Hand UI-->Mini Screen view-->ON
you can also shift the keypad (dialer) on dialer screen to dial a number easily.

Interesting.
This one illustrates my main issue with the S8 and why I'm tempted to go with the S8+ (this is an S8 up against a OnePlus 3T)

I know you can do screen stretching but the fact is you will distort/crop into the intended visual

This was also interesting from the Verge.

It's kind of like Goldilocks. In terms of width against a 16:9 phone like the OP3 the S8 is too small. That means in spite of a 5.8" display, a 16:9 game like what's shown above will display smaller than on a 5.5" traditional display like the OP3. But in return you have a smaller phone physically with the S8 and more physical display area for things like browsing and when using apps capable of leveraging the full vertical height (or width in landscape) of the display. The S8+ has even more display width than the OP3 so even with black bars applied you'll have 16:9 games display larger. But that width makes the S8+ substantially taller physically. So if you use a lot of 16:9 formatted content you'll either have to view it smaller on the S8 but get an easier phone to handle or larger on a S8+ but have to deal with a larger phone.
Until we all play with the new 18:9 phones for a while it'll be hard to fully assess the upsides and downsides of the new format. I'm sure there will be quite a few laypeople that won't realize until they get the phone home and start doing what they've always done what the format change really means. With LG and Samsung both moving to the new format in the name of easier to handle phones I'd imagine other OEMs will follow in short order. At least for their flagships.
With LG and Samsung going this way you can be pretty sure that apps will have support for the displays in the near future. It doesn't look like this is going away, at least not for Samsung. Samsung sells far more Android devices than anyone else and that means developers are more likely to make the necessary changes.

Played with it for 20min

I thought the screen size compared to my 10 plus would be relatively indiscernible but it really looks quite bigger . Wierd.
I returned the s20U because of the camera issues especially with the main 108 megapixels. This phone completely nails it. I took pictures from all different angles and all different zooms and they were really superb.
Much as I love my 10 plus screen clarity the 20 Ultra really seems to top it.
Here's another weird thing I tested the speed of it on a speed test and it was 256 ms down.
then tested the 10-plus in the store and it was 489 ms down! I tested it twice the 10+: 400+ ms down.
What the hell's with that ?!

A speed test on what? The in store wifi? How did you connect your phone to the in store wifi for the devices on display?

Exactly, so many reasons this could be the case, even cases, phone orientation, is one on 2.4Ghz wifi and one on 5Ghz, if on 5G/LTE are they both on the same mode, etc.
I want someone to point the Note 20 Ultra camera at their current phone with a black background and white text to see if the "across the frame" focal uniformity issues that the S20 Ultra has - are fixed!
Never have I had a phone camera with a frustration level so high in being able to easily and quickly capture text on a computer screen before! I shouldn't have to use pro mode and MF and zoom and do best guess on peaking to hope it looks decent. Readable? Yes, but I'm used to text in photos looking like the original.
My lowly Nexus6 and Droid Turbo take better pics in this regard FFS! :-|
