I have been running Cyanogen Mod ROM for so long, and used to standard settings like making the screen grid 5x5, I know that is not an option with a stock Nexus.
What launcher would you recommend for the Nexus 4 that allows those tweaks ? I know there is Nova...Apex...and ADW is back again. Will these launchers still allow new 4.2 features to work, like the new notification stuff, etc... ?
The notification system is within the OS not the launcher so yes, you can choose Apex, Nova or ADW. I don't believe 4.2 makes any drastic changes to the launcher that will opt you to use the stock one instead of a third party alternative. Not to mention the devs for these launchers are still pretty active so if there's something new in the 4.2 launcher, you'll see them update it pretty quick on their launcher.
I'll personally be running ADW or Nova.
I'll probably use Nova. Nova and Apex are damn near identical minus a few differences. I paid for both, but originally started using Nova regularly because it felt smoother.

I'll probably use the stock one until CM10.1 or whatever they call it comes out, then Trebuchet.
I'm going to give Nova a shot. I use it on my GNex and it is pretty beast and suits my needs.
I paid for Nova prime I'm gonna use it lol. Fast as all hell on my nexus so I'll assume its faster on the four.

I use go launcher and Contacts EX
Nova and rest lack to many feature and aren't even free.......
Been using Nova with all my roms flashed and will use it with the N4!
Stock all day
I bought Nova back when it was on sale and haven't looked back since. It's pretty much the stock launcher (same source) but with added features.
Nova or Apex are both good. Apex better on battery but Nova is richer.

nova or apex. they are the two most popluar stock ics launchers
I received my GS3, rooted, installed TB and restored nova.

I was using nova but had some lag when opening and closing the app drawer. Switched to Apex and no problems at all.

Love Nova, but may give Apex a try.
Nova seems to be running smoother for me than apex. Definitely enough to tide me over for some aosp love

i got apex...came from pure ics on my craptivate so touchwiz kinda sucked...it was kinda billed as really close to ics but not so much i think...
apex/nova should make it liveable until we get a nice selection of ROMs
Nova is a nice launcher....now that I've figured out there are two ways to control the speed of it I am much happier with it today than I was yesterday. Yesterday I was just adjusting the "animations" speed, somehow I missed the "scroll speed"....now that I've got that worked out it's much better, even with power savings enabled.
Anyone have recommendations on settings for apex that make the phone feel faster?

I downloaded Nova and Apex both yesterday. So far I think I like Nova better. To be honest though I am not sure why people dislike touchwiz. FWIW though I am new to droid coming from iPhone so the learning curve is there either way. I guess it is what you get used to.
I currently use the full version of Nova and find it awesome but heard Apex is smoother on the Nexus 7. Discuss
Thanks a ton guys

I prefer Nova and use it on my phone, but apex is definitely smoother on this device and is what I use. There's no pullback when moving through homescreens using apex, which is huge IMO.
I use Nova and have extremely fast screen transitions. I don't know what was meant by 'pullback'. I tried Apex also and definitely prefer Nova in conjunction with 'Notification Toggle' which provides true one-touch toggling for rooted users of the various radios.
I tried out Nova and Apex free versions when I first got my Nexus and couldn't tell any difference. It's really personal preference in my opinion. Does it feel smoother to you?
In the end I went with Nova Prime.

In my opinion, Nova is smoother than Apex. I'm not sure about on the N7 though. I used Trebuchet on it before it broke .
The Pull back you are talking about was fixed with last update just a couple days ago now nova is smooth as butter and I highly recommend it

Cool, I'll definitely check it out then.
Edit: Yep, they definitely fixed it. Much better. I'll most likely stick with Nova now.
definitely Nova Launcher...
I was using Apex and loving it!!
until for some reason on my Nexus 7, when i landscape mode, widgets didnt work,
i tried reset factory,
delete Apex cache, then reinstall,
still in landscape widgets dont work,
so i changed to Nova and the customization is superb and perfect, loving it at the moment...
I used to use Go Laucher
Now I am using Nova Launcher Prime
It gives you more customization
Apex seems to be much smoother in my opinion.

I have both paid for versions. I'm currently using Nova Prime on the 7 as u love the fact you can set a custom tap action for folders and have swipe open the folder. So I have a folder with various browsers I use but a tap on the folder opens chrome.

Title says it all. I am currently using Apex, but have wondered about Nova, Trebuchet etc...
Is there much of a difference between them? Also, if you select 'always' when asked which launcher to use (if you have more than one loaded) is there anyway to reverse that to use a different one?
BTW, I am using TWA_privs latest (0223) ROM and its unbelievably good...
Thanks....

I use the stock CM10.1 launcher. Trebuchet, I like the layout and settings for it. And t change launchers, go to setting an find the launcher you currently use user apps. And click clear defualts
For CM7 I prefer ADW EX and for 4.x.x+, I prefer Trebuchet I try to avoid launchers that will show up in the running category under Settings- Apps like Go Launcher and the newest ADW. The less running processes the better IS MY OPINION because the Kindle's limited memory.
I have grown to love Trebuchet because it usually is included as the stock launcher for JB ROMs. The reason I like ADW EX for CM7 is because ADW was included on the CM7 ROMs and one day I wanted to try the EX version of it and it was quite nice with the density hack to make the icons appear bigger.

I use holo launcher hd. It looks and acts a lot like apex and trebuchet, but has HD in the name (so its gotta be good!).
Try chameleon launcher..u would not come back to apex or trebuchet pr anything..and spb shell 3d is also a great launcher..very smooth..keep in mind that chameleon launcher is landscape only..

Chameleon Launcher is a good concept, but it never quite caught on. At first they released it for $12 in the play store. I got it and it need a lot of work it was still betas. I got a refund and haven't tried it since. I was reading reviews and it still is not up to par, with little actual customization and limited widgets. Makes it almost seem like ios

I'm about to receive my s4 just wanted to know which launcher you guys recommend. I tried touchwiz before and never really liked it so I'm using golauncher.Just wondering if anyone recommends anything better for the s4.
I like Nova and Apex about equally of the free alternatives on the market and better than I do the GO launcher but some of this is going to be subjective. There is what you like personally and also based upon how you go about doing things on your phone some launchers will be a little better suited to you. That said the latest versions of TW are quite a bit better than the older versions and you will be giving up some of the tw widgets by switching up. Most of them are junk but some are not.
Myself I tend to go back and forth between Apex and TW because I like to change it up to keep things fresh. Apex BTW is the only other launcher I have tried with it so far but I'm likely to take a gander at others as boredom strikes.
You don't like Touchwiz
Nova launcher...
Using Apex launcher. It is amazing :-O

You guys have to try Action Launcher.
Not free but there is nothing better for Android. Use it for a few days and you just can't go back to traditional launchers.

Go Launcher can also be an alternative, i guess Nova and Apex doesn't have lock screen customization feature.

Performance wise I say equal. Customizability Nova.

I prefer nova simply because of the customizability and the use of gestures not to mention I've been using nova for a very long time.

I prefer Apex (paid) over either. The default launcher that comes with Slimbean is Nova as it was determined to be the best in terms of speed and memory while still being tweakable and free.
Luv Nova... Faster than light! try it
Nova for added customization.
First thing i did was install nova
Also for eye candy sometimes i use Next launcher but overall nova is the best.
stock is fine if you want an applauncher interface - nova really lets you build
Performance, stability, functions, you name it! Its Nova Prime.
Just a quick question here. Would Nova Luncher interfere with Light Flow in any way? Or they have nothing to do with each other? Just don't want to install nova yet in case it messes up my light flow settings.

Both have nothing to do with the other. I use light flow and nova myself and it's working great. I tried almost every Launcher available and everytime I came back to nova Launcher. Followed by apex Launcher and then holo Launcher HD.

I like both, but always come back to the stock launcher. Weirdly. Maybe because I used Nova to mimic the stock launcher on my former Xperia Ion, and now that I have the stock launcher, well I don't want to change anymore
By the way, I get this with every launcher : when you press a conversation on the widget SMS on the lockscreen, I always get a black screen (launcher, but without wallpaper) and then app launches. I don't know why, it's the only thing bugging me. and it happens on Nova Prime, Apex Pro and stock launcher.

No, it would not affect your light flow. I have both installed and used both of them.
The stock launcher is smooth, but nova gives you so much options. I use nova prime on my phone and my tablet (n7) and am very happy with it.

But Nova is making lags on my N4, though it is fast but i do not like such, i still prefer Apex, more features than Nova and the fluidity is there, it is more than enough for me with its new feature (Apex Notifier)

I prefer Apex as well, and can make it really snap by turning off various animations (perhaps doing the same to Nova would help).
PS: I do like the Notifier, though I thought that feature has always been there with the paid version of Apex (maybe due to recent android updates they had to utilize the notifier?)
Stability: Both are amazing, stock is probably very slightly more stable, VERY SLIGHTLY
Customize: NOVA, done
Performance (speed, RAM, background): Nova. You can tweak the animation speeds, it's always fluid, you can make it an "aggressive launcher", it destroys

You can change the speed/animation's of the stock launcher too. All in the developer options..
Also aside from stock. I would say APEX (paid) seems to be the smoothest 3rd party launcher on the Nexus 4.
Nova (paid) laggs horribly for me. Doesn't matter what settings I change.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
What's horrible in Nova is the poor screen previews. It's not smooth at all, looks bad, and has no animation when clicking on a screen. Apex is better in this aspect, though I find Nova slightly faster and snappier.
I'd go back to the stock launcher though, if I found a way to apply custom icon themes to it.
