[Q] Worried about unremovable battery? Should I go with it. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

N4 has non removable battery which worries a bit . What if the battery does dead what are options available in such conditions?

Two screws on the bottom of the phone are all that stop you from getting to the battery

no dont buy it!

If your phone freezes, I'm assuming holding down the power button to restart it would work just fine.
If your battery completely dies - send it in for service, or get a screwdriver and exchange it yourself. I'm sure anyone with an IQ surpassing the number of fingers on their left hand could figure out how to do this.
Why would this stop you from getting the device? I don't get it.

Just two screws, can even get it done

Atleast give a reason

Don't know why this is such an issue for people. Battery has never come out of my S2 and I've lost count of the amount of times I've frozen or crashed it.

what about upgrading the battery?
I upgraded the battery on my nexus one to make it last longer for the day.
is there such option?? I'd love to upgrade it to make it last a full day.

This would require an aftermarket replacement back to the phone that has contacts for (and built in) antennae that the original back contains. None exist yet, but I imagine some will.

Battery Problem (Random reboots)

Hello everyone,
I just bought Samsung Galaxy S4 three months ago, everything was working fine, but suddenly the phone switched off at 53% and when I switched it on again it said 0% and kept rebooting. After removing the battery and putting it again, it became around 30% - 40% and 5min later, it switched off again. The battery became a bit fat than normal, not straight anymore.
I already read some topics about this problem, and the solution was buying a new one. Now the question is, what were the problems that made the battery goes bad like this? I've some suggestions which might be the cause of the problem but don't know if they are right, but I'm going to share them anyway and I hope someone could help and tells us the real thing that caused the problem so we can all avoid it from happening again.
Suggestions are:
1. Charging the phone a lot of time even after reaching 100% (Fully charged icon).
2. Charging the phone with a car charger.
3. Charging the phone with a non original charger.
4. Using the phone while charging it.
Thanks in advance, I'll really appreciate your help.
My friend had the same problem, You need to buy a new battery
Thanks for your reply. but i wanted to know the real reasons that caused the problem and made the battery to be fat.
it seems there was a batch of defective batteries made by samsung . some people have suggested that Samsung changed the battery for free since they had their warranty ; other were less lucky. there is a thread in the general forum about this issue

Thanks difyel a lot. Is there any precautions I can take to avoid this from happening again? Or at least knowing the non defective batteries before getting it from Samsung?
I had a similar issue, sent mine in for repair no idea what they fixed but it was solved. Anyway I've since bought the Anker stock battery and that's been excellent for me.

Did they tell you that they've fixed it? Because as I knew, swollen batteries can't be fixed and they've to replace it for you. Which Anker one did you buy and how much does it cost?
Thanks a lot for your answer again.
it seems that batteries with batch id starting with bd are the culprit . you can check bob's battery guide thread for tips to make your battery last longer and where your battery juice is spent :

---------- Post added at 04:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:14 PM ----------
some things in that thread do not apply to the s4 such as link2sd use systemcleanup instead - or other alternatives - to freeze or uninstall bloatware

Well that's true, I just checked mine and yeah it started with BD. Thanks a lot mate, that was useful.. gonna tell Samsung to get me one that isn't starting with BD, and thanks for this amazing guide.
Last question, do you know any other famous problems like the battery one?
to be honnest i didn't face any issues with my s4 . The only things that i hold against Samsung are regional locking and knox . But there is a thread discussing major problems with s4 you can find it here

Very, very strange problem !

Hi !
i have a Galaxy S4 i9505, and yesterday something really strange happened. I left my phone charging overnight on my pc and in themorning it wasnt charged it had only 3% left and after the battery has drained the phone shut down, and then POOF! it won't charge and turn on no sign of life no LED no vibration, nothing. i tried a new battery nothing happened tried different charger and full battery and nothing seems to fix it. so i used a galaxy mini 2 waiting to find a fix for this and the same thing happened to the mini i left it plugged into my pc and the next day no sign of life. it's very strange. just to let ou know that i dont charge my phone on the pc this is the first time i leave it plugged in and when plugged it says that it's charging but somehow it stops and kills the phone . PLEASE help !
ROM and bootloader used?
Current from pc is very low and your mobile might have use more than it due to background process and hence your phone might have slowly discharged instead of being charged.
Try charging from a wall charger for a few minutes and then try to boot it.

But also it shouldnt be discharged by backgroung process. It is really wierd. Maybe you can see in the battery stats to find which app is using this and freeze it. Use battery doctor to kill apps when the screen is turned off.

Hi, thanks for the answers but i tried all of that and i can't get even the s4 logo to show nor the LED or any sign of life, i even tried a full battery and nothing happens it's not the power button since it don't show anything when plugged into a charger, the saaame thing happened to the other phone. the ROM is omegadroid and whats a bootloader ?? a phone repair guy told me that he can flash from a port inside the phone that needs some soldering, he told me that it's the way samsung flashes the os when the phone is empty and just got out of the factory is this true ? WTH is going on with this phone :crying: and also could it be some kind of virus that kills android phones just when booting because the phone was okay after unpluging it from the pc the problem happened when the battery drained and it shut down after that it wont turn on ! i'm sure that if i plugged the phone to a charger before the battery drained it would be still running now.
What is the warranty status of the phone?.
The guy is talking about jtag/riff box.
Also try not to use the word POOF" as it means homosexual where I live. There may be ones on the forum that could take offence.

Flashing is possible but I recommend you to go to a Samsung service center (even pay them if they figure out that u r out of warranty) as the process is tooooo risky.

I had a similar problem about six months ago.
I don't know if this will help but I found that by disconnecting the battery, leaving the phone for approx. 10 Min, reconnect the battery, then connect wall charger (but do not attempt to turn on). I found that after about 10 - 20 mins the phone started to charge (really slowly, it took about 8 hours to completely charge). Only after this did I attempt to turn it on and it seems to have been fine since.
Hope this helps.

Question to existing users of "S6 Edge+ Plus Dual Sim model", are both SIM slots 4G/3G/2G, or is it only 1st SIM slot is 4G/3G/2G and 2nd SIM slot is just 2G ?
I use 2 SIMs, one local and the other overseas, and from time to time I will need data on either SIM card (depending on my location); it would be great if both SIM slots are 4G/3G capable then I do not need to swap SIM when I travel (for faster data).
Thanks in advance for your replies, it will help me decide on this phone.

But you can long press the back button to bring up the menu.

Battery Questions :
-Who leaves there phone charging overnight?
-Dont you think it will ruin the battery? Even over time?
-If i leave my hotspot on and charge it, do you think it will ruin the battery itself? I know heat may be an issue, however i have a cooling pad so it should never get warm.
I may knownthe answer to these, but id like to be positive before i go through with it.

Perhaps at extreme angles on white backgrounds.. but that's due to the olephobic coating and nothing to worry about.

1. I always plug it in when I go to bed, never had an issue in my life (I've always done that with every phone I've ever owned)
2. No, it doesn't.
3. I have never tried that, can't see a reason I would, but if the hotspot causes excessive heat and you're charging it too, then it may increase the temperature enough to do something to the battery life since heat can be a factor if it's extreme. I wouldn't recommend it.

According to me in smartphones overcharging is not an issue. But on the same hand that doesn't means that its safe to keep our device on charge for 12-14hours. every battery has a cycle of charging. The best way to get most of your battery is to before keeping it on charge drain it till 5% and while charging don't use your phone. It is the reason why battery bulges.

Currently the best method to prolong battery life is to charge it often in smaller amounts, minimize draining it past 15-20%, and unplug it when it hits the high 90's, but the benefits from that don't live up to the pain in the ass it is, so basically don't drain your phone until it dies, don't charge it to full more than once a day, and don't worry about it. Now running hotspots while charging in the summer heat? Wouldn't advise it.

t-mobile pushing through new update

t-mobile has started sending out updates through the phone. received mine about 15 minutes ago. when the update first showed up it explained exactly what the update was for and what it did. the update is supposed to give you the green battery icon if you have a new replacement note. if note the battery icon stays white and let's you know to return your phone for a replacement. i have not done the actual update yet as i am holding onto my note till the end of the month as i might try to get another phone besides a samsung phone.

This is the main reason why I want to return my phone back for a new iphone. The lag is terrible.... I know you said lag is gone, but could you elaborate?
The update also includes the September 1, 2016 security maintenance release.
I wonder if the security update includes a feature that will let them turn the phone off if you do not swap it out?
Getting my replacement sent to my store since I cant get silver in any one around me. Just got confirmation text lets hope they get them out asap!
If my Note 7 is from China and I download this update...I fear my battery icon will turn green and I won't be able to exchange the phone ? Will T-Mobile sent me if this happens?

The rumor is that they will take away 40% of your battery capacity due to forcing your battery to only charge up to 60% of total charge. They say this to make sure the old Note 7 don't over charge and don't explode. This is rumor to happen by the end of month.
This is what I believe is their last straw in getting us to exchange the older Note 7 for newer Note 7.
So this update is giving warning before taking away 40% of our battery charge capacity.
So there is no need for them to force shutdown your Note 7.
Has anyone else notice the Weather & Clock widget disappearing when using another launcher. I exchanged my device last night for a new one, set it all up the way I like it. The update came through this morning, and after installing it the "Weather & Clock" widget disappeared from my home screen. I'm using Google Now launcher and loved that I had this ability prior to the update as I know previous phones limited certain widgets when you used different launcher. Anyone else on this boat?
Thanks!

Which means that this wouldn't take effect until the end of month. Not now. Again it is/was (depending on time you read this) a rumor. This rumor is well posted at many news and tech sites,

You can postpone it what they say as 3 times (whatever that means). Once you reboot it will reboot itself at sometime (without you choosing) and install itself regardless of you choosing to postpone it. That is what happened to me. Once it starts to install you can't stop it by shutting down (I tried that).
So in short in the long term you have no choice.

I think people are getting confused since there are 2 updates.
One is for defective Note 7s making it so it'll only charge to 60% for safety reasons and so people will go exchange their devices.
The 2nd update is for new Note 7s, making the battery indicator green along with a number of improvements, I'm loving my Note even more now, its very snappy with some welcome UI changes.

WRONG. There is only one update for t-mobile users. Doesn't have to do with any kind of battery limitations, only fixes / improvements, and now a notification that will tell you to replace the device everytime you place it on a charger.

Battery recommendations? Does it need to be the battery for my exact model?

I noticed on eBay batteries for the Note 4 list compatible models for each battery. Are batteries for all Note 4 variants interchangeable? Or do I need to get one for my specific model? My phone is the SM-N910V model.
I'm in Canada and not looking for one of those big batteries. Just the stock/oem battery.

Lol I wouldn't be able to trash a phone, it will come back and haunt me. I know you have an LG now but how was the battery and what customisations did you do to improve battery life?
I got a ravpower battery few days ago but need some help with tweaking kernel settings etc to improve battery life as it is not that good.
Tried these optimisers like FDE and LKT but no luck, haven't tested LKT properly though as an update for FDE came out that should've fixed the CPU/GPU turbo boost thing.
Also, I don't care about gaming like PUBG (although I like it  )
Thanks for your previous advice/help and now of course.

You know what I think it's doing 10x better without optimiser thing. 10% lost by browsing on xda for 40min. Might be speaking too early.
Definitely still interested in changing some things around to improve it so please hit me with the facts/guides/tutorials/walkthroughs??!

Of course that wasn't a true story. Hah. I would never toss my "baby".
I haven't played with it much since but I ended up getting the Ravpower for it. It was cheap and arrived promptly. I used Kernel Audiutor for it and it's set to whatever the default is.
I can say I have gotten at least 90 more mins of SOT and more than a week of standby. Maybe even more. I'll power it up sometime soon and check Battery Bot.
Screenshot of my standby time. My OST is only ten mins at this point tho since this is no longer my daily driver.

Wow I actually believed it, was gonna ask if you tossed it at the bottom of a pretty much empty bin or... but it's getting emptied so must be full unless you did it earlier haha. Because I was wondering about the damage that may have occurred if this actually happened (from throwing it in the bin and then truck). How the hell would you find your phone just laying on top of all the trash in the garbage truck?!?! Now it makes sense that that's not true. I am really dumb:cyclops:
OK now I got that out of my head are you saying that kernel auditor automatically configures some things without you adjusting anything in the app? Because I didn't know that. Also what you mean by Battery Bot?
I don't think it does that unless you picked a standard configured profile that kernel auditor gives you based on device or something (not someone else's log configuration file or whatever you call it)
But like I said I don't know my kernel stuff... take your time I'm in no rush after all all of this is free and out of kindness which is something I really appreciate from XDA (or even the internet in general (duh))

Ignore battery Bot question that was quick!
Still need to look at screenshot though

I can confidently say I will get between 4-5hr SOT compared to trash SOT before (min 2hr max 4hr suprisingly, probably less intensive use)
On average 4.5 hours at least

I joke around often. Battery Bot is a great battery tool. I put the widget for it on my home screen and check it now and again to see how much approximate SOT I have left, how long it's been on standby, etc.
