[Q] ..who is the possible successor of the HD2? - HD2 General

Hi everibody,
I think that due to hardware limiations, during this last year our beloved LEO has passed from the top range to mid-range of mobile phones. plus there is to consder that probably the developing will continue only for android. In your opinion would be a successor of the HTC HD2? I mean, would it probably be in the future a terminal able to load both android and Windows phone 8?

Haha 'in the last year'? It dropped to mid range a while back, there are just some things which put behind quite quickly. I'd say that now it's at the bottom of the mid-range phones, especially with its GPU. Having said that, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind (and in many others', I can assure you) that it's also a brilliant phone and will always remain so.
As for your question, it's quite tough for any phone to have so much success. The HD2 was launched in the dying days of WinMo with (at the time) stunning hardware, and people expected Windows Phone 7 to be on its way soon. The level of development was huge when there was no update, as the phone was such a waste of hardware whilst running WinMo. I highly doubt we will see another phone which pushes the limits of hardware but runs on an outdated OS any time soon, so there likely won't be any true successor to the HD2.

Agreed.
What would make our hardware better, is... new internals. It's gonna be hard getting stuff to all be compatible like drivers and such, but it's a viable idea.

hmmmm maybe not successor but is there any phone out there that can run what the HD2 runs? HSPL, clk, magldr, nativeSD, HD2 roms etc.

that's exactely what I am asking for. Of course, I don't expect all this huge developing. but I would be happy if a newer and more powerful mobile phone would let me choose between Windows phone 8 and android...

If devs port haret in to wp8 then it will be posible to run android.
Sent from my NexusHD2 using xda premium

If haret will be run on Windows 8, whould it probably be an alternative bootloader or in any chase you have to start your phone with WP8 and after that running haret from it? I mean..can haret open a way to unlock the bootloader?

[Q] WINDOWS PHONE 7 release on nov 8 on HTC HD7

I have confirmed that Windows Phone 7 is being released on several devices on November 8th. The tmobile version has two devices, the one that interests me is the HTC HD7 (and dell venue pro). Nice looking phone 4.3 inch screen, but major difference is it has three buttons (touch like the HD).
here is the link...

does anyone know how they plan to give the hd2 owners the OS? and what about the people who dont know anything about flashing?
WHo has reliable information on how they plan to do this.

Thank you for the bad/good news!!!
I actually just signed up to get a HD7 as soon as it's released. I keep seeing that there are too many driver/hardware compatibility issues to make wp7 work on the hd2...
A little f'd up because HTC hinted that anyone who bought the HD2 would be able to upgrade when wp7 came out...it's a good thing that we have great chef's otherwise the HD2 would be a waste

android on htc hd7 same as htc hd2??
now that this phone is coming out will it be the same process to run android on this new phone hd7, or is it more complicated then the htc hd2. are these the same phone basically spec wise except for touch buttons and a kickstand. lets strat the comparison, as i just ordered a hd2 to put android on it but not sure if the hd7 will run android better.
hd7 is not out yet how do we know if you can even run android on windows phone 7! we will all have to wait and see!
Hopefully our great devs here will be able to port wp7 over. Cotulla already got it to boot up on the hd2, which is a great sign. Considering the hd7 has the exact same hardware as our hd2, wp7 has the possibility to run great on our phones. We can only hope and support our devs. Time will tell.

You should get a native android phone if you just want to run android. Android on the hd2 will probably never run as well as native android phone... its always gonna be a hacked on version of android.

I'd be a little skeptical about trying the same process on the HD7, will an uploader work or will it brick the phone. we know what happened with the the hd2 hspl was neccessary. And, if the drivers are so different that the wm7 is incompatible with the hd2's hardware...i would assume just throwing the android we have now onto a diffent device is asking for trouble (althoug from everything I'm seeing, the hd7 is almost the same thing... i dont like the fact that the 16gb of memory is on board...will it have an sd slot?)
I'd wait until someone successfully does it

When I looked at the spec it look like it the same processor as my HD2 except for the button. So it can be program to use Windows Mobile 7 without programming the other buttong? Just curious. Can someone check it out? Thanks.
Oh you dear, sweet, uninitiated. Allow me to clarify some points:
1-WILL THE HD2 GET AN UPGRADE TO WP7
A-Officially, no. This was announced some months ago that the HD2 will NOT be getting an upgrade to WP7 from MS or HTC.
2-DOES THAT MEAN THAT A CUSTOM WP7 ROM WILL HAPPEN?
A-Maybe. As it has been stated, Cotulla has booted WP7 successfully on HD2 hardware, but it is uncertain as to wether it will work in day to day use. His team is currently VERY secretive about what is/isn't working.
3-WHAT ABOUT ANDROID?
A-I have always said, if you wan't Android, buy and Android device. WP7 will almost certainly NOT work with current Android builds. Different hardware, different drivers etc. Oh and WP7 is not compatable with CE applications...which means HaRET...and pretty much any program written for WinMo.
I hope that clears some things up!

Seems like there's a very good chance.... since all the new windows phone 7 uses the same 1st GEN snapdragon.
Which is also quite disappointing actually if you look at it from a different stand point. Pretty sad launch for HTC and Windows to use dated hardware which has been available since last year. You'd think they use newer hardware to really push a launch of the their new OS, which quite frankly is Microsoft's last chance to try and take back to mobile market......

If you want an Android phone, GET AN ANDROID phone. HD2 phone works with Android, but its not 100%, and you still have Winmo 6.5 in the background. It simply does not work as good (stability and speed) as a true Android phone. Im sure that IF WM7 gets ported, the same will be true. Close, but not close enough.
The HD2 is a phone for WM6.5 first, and other OS's second.

I agree with almost all of your points but I can't agree that the Hd2 "won't" be as stable as a true Android phone is when the development has been finalized. Now if you are only speaking about today then "okay, you're right most of the Android builds aren't that stable yet". The Android build that I am using on my HD2 is 100% stable right "Now". As for speed it is faster than 99% of all the current new Android phones out right now. It is speed testing above the Nexus one Android 2.2 which I think almost everyone would agree is pretty fast. The camera being 3 megapixels instead of 5 is the "only" issue it has. The Video camera is actually better on the Android side than it is on Win Mobile side. And my win mobile rom is rock solid.
This next point is very important: The only reason the camera and other issues has not been resolved of yet is because HTC "had" not released the Kernel Source for the Android builds. Just yesterday HTC released the Kernel source of the Desire Z and the G2 which means that the Camera issues and foot print issues on the Desire Z, and Desire HD builds will likely be resolved in the "Very" near future. At which point my Android build which "honestly" is already stable and running faster that the Nexus one android 2.2 will be "Better" than most true Android phones when I choose to use Android.
As to the question that prompted your reply " I was thinking of getting a used HD2 to port android. any advice?". I totally agree with you that If the person asking the question wants a Android phone don't buy the HD2. But if it is choices that is wanted the HD2 is a good option. And it is why I chose to buy an HD2 in spite of the fact that Microsoft said they weren't going to update it to Win 7, which was going to make the 6.5 obsolete, and the available apps compared to the iPhone and the Android Market place are very, very weak. I knew that I would be using the Android Market place apps whenever I wanted to, and in time I would be shopping at the Win phone 7 market as well. Because of Xda developers the HD2 offers it's owners more choices than any other phone right now. And I for one love having choices : - )

Which (whose) Android are you using, and are you using on the stock 2.13 TMOUS ROM? I was on Darkstone's Froyosense, but the PPP kept dropping connection on me every 8 or so hours, and a 5-minute reboot made it a pain... so unless I can get an RMNET version or stable PPP release, I'm still not using Android as a daily unit (plus, battery life is still poor, although Nexus port has good battery life, but I get the robotic voice... <sigh>).

I can partially agree, but app developers along with the team that worked on this OS certainly need sure specs to be able to develop fragmentation free. Using this slightly older, but still very high end, specifications also allowed the OEMs to make devices with little or no driver development. This strategy is very Apple. This OS will not be 'open' as android or Winmo are. MSFT has alos stated that OTA updates come from them directly, with no red tape from Carriers or OEMs.
Sony's rumored PSP2 is an example. though a few developers have said that they have one, there have been no announcements for any region. these things are years in the making and changing something like the processor may have delayed launch.
Does anyone remember how dated the G1 (dream) looked at it's launch? it didn't even have 3.5mm jack.MSFT is getting this thing out as soon as it can. they don't want to be a Palm, and have devices leak like the pre2 that probably won't even get a date until CES

i totally agree with your comments and would like to add just one thing. There is not much android devices on market which has 1 gb rom and 500mb ram yet on the market. So Android on HD2 is still much better then most of the native android devices on the market even tho working on the sdcard yet. Once nand version is released it is gonna be a killer not only being able to run android but also multibootable! If you only gonna stick with android and you are in need of a new phone then only superior HTC android devices like desire HD might be a better choice imao

I'm using the new hyper droid 1.6.on my hd2 and its daily.don't even touch winmo anymore.battery life its my only complaint.but I like having winmo as a backup. All droid phones have crappy battery.the fact that I can do anything to the droid rom and never worry about my device becoming a brick its great.plus having the option of three OS's (winmo, droid, ubuntu) is better then just having a droid.
Also what is "nand" ? Is it like the computer when you pc your os at boot? Rather then haret?

I don't mean to be negative, I am actually really happy with my HD2 using WinMo- but I don't get the WP7 hype. I have watched the youtube videos and the OS looks cramped on the phone. I understand that Sense makes our phones look amazing; but I have heard that MS won't allow any Sense on WP7. The ability to customize my phone and make it look COMPLETELY different than anyone else's is one of the biggest draws to any phone; and from what I can see all the WP7 phones look the same!
Has MS done something completely outside the box with this phone that no one is talking about?

Try this combo... I am running Android as a daily driver... data is speedy (2MB Down / 1 MB Up here in Salt Lake City, UT).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=802194
Use the OzDROID ROM here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=774417
Then load the 2.5 update from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=802194
You will be thoroughly impressed. It may freeze up during the first boot of Android. Just soft reset it and you'll be good to go. I used heavy 3G data all day and still had 40% battery at the end of the day. The touchscreen is much more responsive than with WM.
Good luck...
I think WP7 will eventually come. Android didn't take long because similar hardware with the same drivers launched and it was relatively easy to port. Windows Phone 7 has models that are basically the same hardware too so it should come quickly.
I'm anxiously awaiting this also! I dont use my HD2 anymore, I have an EVO for my regular phone... I love windows mobile though

I would not make comments off the cuff without actually knowing the facts. Yes, the HD2 was designed as a device to run WM 6.5 and/or WP7 At that date no one was clear on Microsoft's expectations and a hardware definition had not been made public. A lot of folks believe this was behind T-Mobile upping the Ram and ROM footprint, in the expectation it would be potentially upgradeable to WP7. Then Microsoft shot it down, so HTC has essentially reworked the same hardware with a few tweaks (love the little stereo speakers, not so much the kickstand, which LOOKS cool as hell, but is claimed to be unstable from the rounded base-edge)
That said, the next point is, Windows Mobile does NOT "run in the background" - It is there mostly to initialize the hardware (else we would be in driver hell) and when Haret boots the Android kernel, it first UNLOADS the WM kernel. So no, Android does NOT run on top of WM, as a lot of folks seem to misunderstand.
Finally: Stability and Speed? Okay some builds are just reaching a stable point (remembering that we have only HAD working Android builds for 3 months when they first got it booting properly on 8250 Snapdragon Processor.) and perhaps you have not SEEN the cute little performance graphs, provided bay Quadrant on the builds? (see attached)Even the attached Performance numbers - the SLOWEST I have EVER gotten on my HD2 (Usually see 1500+) blow away the Nexus One running Froyo 2.2, Moto Droid X and Samsung Galaxy S - Three of the hottest Android Phones out there (well, the Nexus is getting a bit long in the tooth)
So, to the guy looking for advice? Lets say that while you CAN run android on it, you WILL have to jump through some technical hoops, and you SHOULD at least have an interest in running WM at least part time, since, as Gibbage pointed out, that was the OS it was originally designed to run.
Oh, and if Windows PHONE 7 gets "ported" (there is no "Port" needed, as the HD7 hardware is almost identical) it will run... well just like it runs on the HD7 (assuming bugs & issues can be worked out)

If Windows Mobile 7 Was Properly Ported Onto HTC HD2 Would It Be The Same As HTC HD7?

I have had my HTC HD2 for around 5-6 months now. Though I'm happy with it and it has exceeded my expectations, I was thinking of upgrading it to WM7 when it's finally ported for the HD2.
What I would love to know is if the HD2 indeed had WM7 ported for it, would it run the SAME as it would on HTC HD7?
Reason I ask this is because I was planning on selling my HD2 and get the HD7.
However, both phones have the SAME screen size, same 1ghz processor, same ram & same 5mp camera, the HD7 only being 720p.
Why should I sell my old HD2 to buy the new one which is the SAME spec?
That is why I was asking if WM7 was ported onto the HD2, would it:
- Run as quick?
- Responsive, fast & smooth
- If it really will be ported, when can we expect the first rom or when should it be made for HD2
I am sure sooner or later wp7 will be cracked and ported for HD2. So we will have the same device with HD7 except the looks. Also we have some more hard buttons as an extra
Its not the same.....
It might be a very similar spec but the actual components will differ.
No ported OS will ever run as smoothly as it would on its intended device....
If you want a dedicated WP7 then you'll have to get one not wait for a port.
The fact that it is a user-made port, most likely running off SD card will mean it may be a little more sluggish than something designed natively for, and run natively on, a different device.
That's assuming the problems using Live services are overcome too

Doh that's what I thought!
Well I hope at least if a port does take place, it will perform almost as good as it does on the HD7, but we have to wait and see first when one is made and how it performs.
the camera is capable of 720p it lacks drivers
From my understanding as of right now. The phone will boot into WP7 but it will not have any live application functionality. Meaning the live hubs will not work so no it will not work just like a HD7.
I personally cannot understand the hardware choices they made for WP7. They are all the same spec as the HD2, and personally I'm not shelling out $500ish for the equivalent of a Software upgrade. I'd get all your use out of the HD2 first and wait for the next Hardware generation, unless WP7 really is a big deal for you.
Personally, as a big WinMob fan, I'm now running Android on my HD2, and worryingly I might not come back to MS. Android is exceeding all my expectations, and with no upgrade path to WP7, it's beginning to win my heart, despite my slight mistrust of Google.
If WP7 does come to HD2, the big problem now does appear to be the use of Live Services. Maybe Microsoft may soon relent and sell genuine Licence Keys (there's no sign of that - it's just my wish), but until then you'll probably be locked out of them.
I have had many phones: MDA, Wing, Omnia I900, Iphone 3G and now the HTC HD2. I have Android on my HD2 and use it all the time. Only reboot back into WM every so often.
Why would I or anyone else want WM7? I can make my phone look like WM7, an iPhone, etc. Do looks really matter? Every OS has it advantages and disadvantages.
Android apps are plentiful, cheap and very good. Does WM7 have as many apps?
Do I loose a little (whatever) using Android on my HD2? If I do I don't know what.
Should I buy a new Android phone? What would I gain?
Lets be realistic. The phone companies just love to put out new phones with minor tweeks so us 'suckers' keep them in business. Where does it end?
Personally I can see buying new, if there is that much more bang for the buck. Otherwise, get the value out of what you have. In IT what you buy today is always a day behind what comes out tomorrow.
JMHO!
i am going to ask you why do you want wp7? it's a huge step backwards for users in several key areas and to regain some of that functionality, you need to do several hacks to get wp7 to do what WM 6.5 can already do with ease.

Cause of interest in wp7, I read many tests and user ratings and played with it a time. After all I would buy myself an iPhone( I hate it ) instead of any wp7 phones. Its the same rubbish like iOS but for iPhone you can get more funny and useless apps . Also if you like a fast and smooth UI, WM6.5 or Android would be a better choice. wp7 will not allow to be really individual with your phone...all phones are the same hardware in other shells with same unchangeable UI. There are many more disadvantages...you should may inform yourself one more time.
But when you already know all of this there is no chance to help you

How are people saying WinMo and Android have faster smoother UI. That is false
Thanks everyone for your input, views and opinions.
As some have said, htc just want us to shell out another $500 just to get wm7 which may or may not be worth it since it does have the same hardware as the current htc hd2 and as it's new, there is a lot less software/apps & with regards to compatability, many existing apps for windows mobile 6.5 will not work with wm7.
Since this is the case, maybe there is no point in even upgrading to wm7 or buying a wm7 phone...
Anyway my other phone is the HTC Desire HD running android 2.2 froyo so I have the best of both.
well ! when phone 7 will be ported to HD2 microsoft will release wino 8 lol!

First of all everything the hd7 has the hd2 has the only major change from the devices is that they added a kickstand.
I for one think that if the hd7 has same hardware as hd2 then running wp7 on hd2 shouldn't really be a difference. In a matter of fact the hd2 runs android well compared to other android devices that were made to run it.
OP, I think you should stay with the HD2. I'd rather have the ability to run four different operating systems (relatively well) than run a single system slightly better.

i am going to ask you why do you want wp7? it's a huge step backwards for users in several key areas and to regain some of that functionality, you need to do several hacks to get wp7 to do what WM 6.5 can already do with ease.

Indeed. As a matter of fact, i just recently bought an HD2. not full price, less than 300 euros for a brand new unusued unscratched device with 1 y warranty.
I knew very well that W7 was coming out, even that the HD7 was soon to be out. But its the same phone. I like having extra buttons (hate 100% touch phones.. i like to press something when it becomes unresponsive ). I like Winmobile, even if people say its ****. I like my collection of CAB files.
I like HD2. I like 6.5.
i dont like the new presentation of the phone on W7.. plus the apps will be slow to launch etc etc. If u really wanna upgrade, do it in a years time, get ur phone 50% off

That's VERY true. I have indeed tried android on the hd2, it was responsive, quick & reliable.
When you see android running for the first time on your hd2, you smile and think to yourself ''how cool'' I got android on a phone meant to run windows.
Anyway, I will keep my hd2 for now...

Need help regarding purchase of HD 2[Thread closed, since I have got my answer :-) ]

Hi guys,
I am originally from the xperia x10 section.
I am gonna buy a windows mobile for my sister on her birthday next Month. She always wanted to buy a windows phone which is fast and stable. The looks of the xperia x1 and HD 2 amazed her.
I wanted your help to choose the best of the two. I know hd2 is superior in specs.
Are there many roms for the hd2?
What might be the future of the device?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
Cheers!

before you get lots of 'are you serious? can you not see??' type replies, , look around the forum, its the most hacked phone around. winmo android, wp7, dualboot, nand android, sd android, ubuntu, win95, they all work on hd2.
roms, there are loads, what do you want? winmo 6.5, winmo 6.5.5, win phone 7, android eclaire, froyo, gingerbread, have one android on nand another on sd card if you want, run win phone 7 fron nand and dual boot it with sd card android, loooads of options, tehre isnt another phone about with as much choice. (You only have to compare teh number of sub foryums the hd2 has.)
As for the future, it has no future. It is the last of a dying breed. From here on out the phones will be a little less hackable. Thats not to say they wont be hacked, far from it im sure, but the choice of what you run on it is likely to be more limited, and you are unlikely to see a phone that is so easy to switch between OS's for some time.
I for one will by buying up two or three hd2's in the next few months, shoudl last me a year or three.
Hey bro! Thanks forbthe reply. Yes ibhad checked out the forum and I was pretty amazed with the amount of hacking that has been done on this phone.the reason why I am attracted to this device is that it supports or rather runs many popular platforms. I saw a couple of video reviews from phone dog, they say that the device freezes many times! My x10 used to lag but now I have tweaked it, it runs silky smooth. So are there methods to remove the freeze issue?
Thanks a ton

hd2 or xperia?
hd2 can run ubuntu meego android windows mobile win phone 7 believe it or not even full version of windows 98/me its got a snapdragon 1ghz processor its soooo customizable from boot screens to roms its just a better deal and now you can pick one up on craigslist for under 200 ive seen as low as 150 hd2 is the way to go
I think the biggest thing to consider is how your sister will be able to use the HD2.
Look at what she uses now, and how that is different from the HD2, how tech knowledgeable is she.
Is she interested in changing the ROM? Will she be able to do that? Will you do that for her?
My niece had a Wm6.x phone, but never truly used it to even a fraction of its abilities, and always had problems with it. [Now she has a Blackberry, and is doing great.]
Hey thanks for the reply! By looking at what you said this phone looks very promising! Will definitely go ahead with thus now

What is your opinion about my mind & some Q

Hi!
i'll buy HD2, this is because experience WP7.
The reason for this strange thinking, was after the announcement of the partnership between Microsoft and Nokia.
I enjoy not wm and also stopped to buy Nokia phones, But what made me re-thinking is wonderful Nokia N900 running Maemo, After the powers given by Microsoft to Nokia, Imagine the improvements to the WP7.But my fear I do not like this system, so i'll try it in HD2. if i like it i will buy nokia's WP phone. if i don't i will sell it.
What do you think . Is my thinking correct ?

Questions:
-Any problems with android and WP7 on HD2 ?
-There are two versions of HD2 European and U.S. & the second is better than the first in the rom and the ram. Do the European have a negative impact on WP7.
sry for my bad language
The only person who can take a final decision is you.
WP7 is a totally new approach, inspired by iOS, and not as open as Windows Mobile or Android.
In my personal opinion, HD2, as of today, is quite an economic way to go, you can actually run 3 platforms without big flaws: WinMo, WP7, and Android. None of those makes big problems, while WP7 feels as "native" on HD2 like on any "official" WP7 device.
If you are more into tweaking and modding, WinMo and Android will remain your favorites, maybe some other OS´s in the future, who knows. I own my HD2 since the day it was available in my country, never had any problems, and I flashed probably 50 or even more times. Currently, I run WP7 because I got tired of all the modding and tweaking, and I like the flawless operation of WP7. Sometimes I go back to my "fallback" WinMo ROM for eye candy.
If you´re not sure what to do, why don´t you try to get a hand on some devices to compare the platforms. Keep in mind that an HD2 runs several OS´s, that is definitely unique. It might be worth to give it a try if you´ve got the funds. And as soon as Nokia will be ready, the other manufacturers will have new generation devices on the market, too.
If you don't mind doing work then get HD2 and trust me when I say this Leo is the most versatile device in terms of development. I got Leo1024 months before it was officially out in TMoUS till the day was stolen not once I had issue. If you want to stick with WM6.5.X over WM7 you will be better of as base 29XXX super stable and fast. If you want Android then select nandroid over ram/sd version as it's more maintained. But in the end its all up to you as you have to understand Leo is 2years old device yet it still kicks punch as it made industry standard regardless of POS.Evo long before it was even stolen from us
