[Q] the daily show killed my nexus 7 ! - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, here is what has happened to my Nexus 7. It worked flawlessly for a few weeks after I bought it. I installed the daily show app and it still worked fine. Went to a friends house to play cards and had the 7 in my pocket. A few hours later I pulled it out of my pocket and the screen was black with random pixels and lines flashing in random colors. I just let it sit there for about 10 minutes, then tried a re-boot. It rebooted fine but the message "Unfortunately the daily show has stopped" or something like that. It then worked ok (I removed the app) but still does the random black screen thing and sometimes shuts off when I want it to only be asleep (annoying when I use it as my morning wake up alarm). I can't believe the app itself was the problem. My guess is maybe it overheated and got damaged by running while in my pocket? I didn't have a pattern to unlock it, only the circle to slide, so I can imagine that it might have started while in my pocket somehow. Should I try and get a new nexus 7 or is there something I can do? random reboots and shut offs are not cool...

you say you had it in your pocket...did you by chance sit on it?

haha. no. I thought about that right away, however it was in my front pocket. in addition to which physically it looks the same (i.e. no obvious bends or warping on the surface)

thats odd maybe the app has caused it to over heat and that can cause data corruption. I would try to reset it back to factory or if your on a custom rom.. Restore a previous backup in cwm... If still no luck..
go all the way back by wipe and factory rom new download...
Hope you get it resolved.. Keep Your tablet out of your pocket... Get a nice purse. Giggles. well or shoulder bag..

Good job it wasn't the Jeremy Kyle show, That kills everything.

[Q] Diagnosing instability

First a disclaimer ... actually two disclaimers ...
#1. I'm an Android noob - I had installed it onto my old AT&T Fuze and loved it and based on that bought a Dell Streak which arrived today;
#2. Within an hour of getting it, it was rooted and 2.1 O2 image installed
I love it. Faster than I can believe is possible over 3G, smooth, lovely.
Except it constantly shuts down. It seems almost every time I go to switch it on it's booting from startup again ... Dell logo ... O2 logo ... then home screen.
OK, 3 disclaimers ...
#3. I've installed a ****load of apps onto it already
Is there an application that will allow me to monitor which applications are causing the instability, or do I just have to suck it up as the cost of running something that's beta/unstable/wrong network/wrong device ... ?

have you checked the back plate is secure? when i had random shut downs it was because the backplate wasnt in place correctly. that could be the reason your having random shutdowns? the backplate is a little temperamental
I'm 99% sure it's secure ... it's flush to the device and can't see that it could possibly slide any further up.
It just shut down while I was using it ... hit the menu hard button in the XDA app ... reboot ... although this one was much faster restart.

hmmm, how odd. i dont think there is a app that will allow you to diagnose the problem. the best way would be to factory reset then reinstall one by one each app and try to find one which may be the problem
I've disabled the live wallpaper - will see how that works.

Power it up let it sit and dont run anything. Pick it up and drop it back in your hand then tap on the back plate. If it powers off then either the cover is loose or like me i actually had to mess with the two tabs on the back that senses thae cover is on. It was easy fix but took a bit to find. Thought I had a lemon for sure. I am not sure why they care if the back is on or not but it drops the unit without warning. Your problem sounds similiar to mine.
I think you guys could well be right. Last night I picked it up and dropped it about an inch onto the table and it rebooted.
So far today it seems to be behaving after I really pushed the back plate for all I was worth!
A bit of a design flaw to have it quite that sensitive I think.

You also need to remember that 2.1 is currently in Beta and is pretty buggy, that could also be causing the reboots
I'm on the 2.1 beta also, so expect the odd bug. Mine rebooted this morning after I dismissed the night clock after it had been running fine all night and the alarm woke me up fine.
Random rebooting is something I hope is fixed in final release
The back plate does become easier to fit after a bit, the first time I fitted mine I thought I was going to break something.
Not seen any random reboots on 2.1 (or none that I remember),4399 was much more prone to it.
Since giving the back cover a major push, the reboots have stopped. Kudos to flumps and martywix.
Loving this device ... why did it take me so long to discover Android?

Screen flickering problem

Temp fix on post 7
Hey, I've owned my phone for
about 6 months. It has been fine till about a week ago when I flashed a miui rom (Mintberry). At first, it was just occasional flickering, everyday or two for a few seconds, but now it's turned into a fair bit more.
If I don't use my phone heavily for about 3 hours, and go back to the phone, the screen has turned completely grey. When this happens, no matter what state my phone is in the screen flickers. It generally begins flickering very fast then after 5 seconds the screen is completely grey (even once rebooted).
I have dropped my phone a few times like everyone does, nothing severe or even close though. I didn't drop it then have it instantly happen.
I have since tried a few things...
Changed pixel density in rom toolbox (works once rebooted, but only till I stop using)
Changed from miui to ICS (no difference, but took an hour for it to start)
Am I looking at buying a new screen?
Edit: tried another battery, no success (didn't expect much)

I had similar issue with my phone. I do not think it has anything to do with software.. but yours is far worse thn mine.. I only had minor flickering which could only be seen sometimes and you really need to notice it with black or white background.. I tired diffrent roms it was on all of them.. I switched back to original rom.. and then got my screen replaced underwarranty... working fine since then..
OK thanks, ill give them a call today.

Had mine flickering in the same fashion. Out of warranty. Took it to a repair place and apparently it was just the screen connection was loose - thats what they told me anyway - $80 later everything worked again - probably ripped me off but im not a hardware tech so didnt want to screw with it myself
I'll have a look at a disassemble guide today, see if I can fix the cable. Thanks man, generally screen flickering is from a loose cable.

Well today I found a fix...
I accidently left my phone in the car when it was pretty hot. Seemed fine when i used it for a few minutes so i assumed it was water damage and decided to take the battery out and leave it for a while.
Came back to the phone after i had done the shopping to see if it was still working. Nope... It was noticably colder though as the car was now in the shade.
I ended up getting a heat bag and wrapping it around the phone. The screen almost immediately started working and the screen was perfect.

Be careful throwing your Note on the floor !

Being on xxlsc since two weeks without a problem, today was my turn of good luck.
I picked up my phone and forgot it was on the charger.
It got ripped out of my hand and fell flat on the floor.
Instead of finding it the way it should be, It smiled back at me with the Galaxy Note N7000 boot logo....
I tried to turn it off, but It wouldn't, it just went black for a few seconds and then came back in the same state. So I booted into cwm and chose for Turn power off.
This worked. So when I switched it back on a few seconds later, it went into boot animation and then froze....Turning off got me the same state as before, it smiled back at me with it's useless boot logo.
Repeated my earlier steps, same result.
Then I noticed with the device being shut down, pushing the home button didn't show up the battery state as it usually does. Neither did a quick touch of the powerbutton....
I didn't feel like to wipe and setup the phone again, so I plugged in the charger to see if that at least would function normally....
Plugging the phone in, without touching anything else made the phone come up in the middle of the boot animation, then it booted....
However I lost all account settings. Google account and email account info was completely wiped...
I entered those manually and all is working back.
So just a long story to share my experience, and maybe it might help someone someday finding himself in a similar situation...
Thanks a lot mate.

Ive lost count of how many times ive dropped my note, Luckily its always been on something soft and nothing has broke, although one time it dropped from the top of the stairs to the bottom (it was my GFs fault for trying to rugby tackle me on the stairs)
But its bizzare how a drop has cause the phone to reset certain things ! i wonder what went on inside the phone for this to happen ?
My Notes in the repair centre at the moment after the USB port broke I hope it survives cause im missing it like hell!
The weird thing is that only some settings got messed up.
like the accounts info
the screen timeout went back to 30 seconds (had it set at 2 min)
but things like wifi info and dominant hand for spen and ink color for lock screen all remained....
Hmm this is the first time I heard that dropping phone can cause an account deleted :/ I've dropped my phone many times but none of them causing an error :silly:

Today I dropped my phone too... Directly out of my hands straight to the asphalt of the bus stop. Luckily nothing bad happens. The edge at the top left cracked a little bit, there are also some scratches at the back cover but the display looks fine. Thanks god, everything is still working

I am not overly obsessive with it. There's a tiny scratch on the screen and countless scratches on the back cover.

Just had the exact issue as the OP, I had the phone fall from the side of the bed to the floor, I have a rubber casing protecting the phone,
when I picked up the phone it was stuck on the Samsung logo, pulled the battery for couple minutes and then the phone booted only to reset again and this time got stuck on logo.
I was lucky I had a backup, I was able to restore cwm backup and all went well for couple days, yesterday I took a 1 minute video and when I clicked on the review to watch the video, the phone restarted on its own and got stuck on Samsung logo. so I had to restore the backup again.
I am on LSC, I read in previous comments that it is a known issue, can someone explain how ICS is different to JB when you drop the phone??
phone been working perfectly for me since the LSC dump has been available.

It's to do with the power been cut. People have reported getting stuck at boot just from rebooting, others after removing the battery. I've experienced it on LSC ROMs only. So if you don't reboot much and then drop your phone causing a blip in power you might get stuck at boot.

I've successful recovered from this bug a few times, very quickly without loosing any data using this method:
1. Boot into recovery
2. Create a full backup
3. Perform full wipe + format system and preload
4. Flash a ROM you normally use
5. Let phone boot and go through initial setup process
6. Reboot into recovery
7. Restore the backup created in step 2 WITHOUT any wipes
8. Reboot the phone
This process takes around . 30min and there is no loss of data.

Did I kill my screen?

So I accidentally depleted my phones battery low enough that when I plugged my phone in to charge it, it was blinking red. But it charged and is back working again, so its all good. But now when I turned my phone on, there's a Google watermark Almost on my screen. I've taken screen shots and looked at them on my computer and it didn't have it, so it much be the screen? Its in the same spot and size as the Google logo when you start up. I only let it charge for about an hour, and the first time I turned it on, it was on its charger and I didn't get the boot animation, the screen was off, I could tell because it was really black, if I display a black screen on my phone while its on, I can still tell its on because of the backlight. Did I break it... ?

It's definitely burned into the LCD, was the phone heated up when it happened? were you using intensive tasks? though, Either way it wouldn't matter. The only thing you could do about it currently is to take it back to LG for them to replace your screen.
What charger you used ? Stock ?
I'd give it about a week to return to normal.
The phone was warm, but not hot. I used stock charger and stock cable. Its actually gone already. I can't notice it at least.

touch screen problems?

I have a small line on my screen that is unresponsive. It goes straight across the top of the screen exactly where the install button is in the play store (about 1" from top of screen at roughly 1/4" thick). Its in a pretty awkward spot and causes a lot of problems. For some reason it has also disabled the tap to wake feature of my phone.
I installed the "Touch Test" app which shows that my entire touch screen is working. However it shows the phone recognizing 2 pointers (touches) being active whenever I touch that area of my screen. I've been having this problem for 2 or 3 months now and all of a sudden today on my lunch break it went away. I was able to tap to wake the screen (worked perfectly the 20 or so times I attempted it), I was also able to hit the install button in the play store and life was great... Or so I thought. A few hours later on my next break my phone went back to annoying piece of junk that I completely dislike using.
Now I dont know exactly when this started happening. I did notice it sometime soon after the 4.4 update, and flashing a custom rom/kernel has made no improvement. Anyone got any ideas? I loved this phone before this started, and my phone is so frustrating now that I completely disrespect the thing and have scratched the crap out of the screen. I'm really hoping this can be fixed so I can go on with enjoying whatever life I have left with the g2, if not I'll probably just abuse it until it breaks then switch over to a water proof z2 or something along those lines... Phone was very well taken care of before the problem started, wasnt dropped or exposed to water (other then using outside in the rain for a few min at a time)

I have this problem too, any fixes?
Well I am in shock as to how we all have the same exact problem.
I first thought it was hardware failure on the screen itself and was pretty bummed. But now I see people have the exact same unresponsive touch screen in the exact same spot as mine? What ROM/Kernel are are you guys running? I am running what is in my sig and had not noticed it before until a couple of days ago. Coupled with the unresponsiveness, my Knock on does not work and the phone becomes mildly warm faster than usual. I think it might be a kernel software issue.
Ugh... I was hoping this wouldn't turn in to this big of a problem. I've got the same thing here, VS980 after flashing a Cloudy ROM.
I took over a thread here recently http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52858791 , but I'll post here again anyways. I wonder if it's the same spot with you guys too. It's right where the install button is on the Play Store, right? For a few hours after it started it went back to normal, then messed up again permanently.
TOT'ing back to 12B didn't help, so I got a replacement device from Verizon. I've yet to send back my old one because I'm worried about the unrooted flag in the bootloader and settings.
I don't have enough posts yet to be able to do this, but can someone alert a dev about this? Particularly in the thread of whatever ROM it was that you last used? A lot of people in the last thread said it came from Cloudy, and I figured it might make sense as Knock Code was supposed to be a feature on there even though the VS980 source wasn't out. Then again I probably have no idea what I'm talking about, but I'd love to hear from someone who does.
I dont think my blacked out area is quite as thick as yours but yes its in the exact same place. To confuse things even more my phone just started working properly again (for how long is another story). Its very odd that It hasnt worked once in 2 months or so and now twice in 2 days its started working.
As a side note I'm pretty sure I started having this problem immediately or very shortly after the OTA kitkat update. I'm now running cloudypro II 2.0 with 3.4.0 kernel, which as i said before didnt fix the problem in the 1 month ive been using this rom.
I originally thought it may have been a software issue, but for it to randomly start/stop working all of a sudden after so long of no function (with no software being added or changed) I'm thinking its more likely a hardware problem? When I fly home on Monday I'm going to try opening up the phone and cleaning the contacts to the from the touchscreen to the mainboard.
If it is software related it may have something to do with air plane mode. I get almost no signal where I'm working at the moment and the constant searching for signal kills my battery pretty fast so I've started using air plane mode the past few days. Thats the only thing out of the ordinary that i've done software wise.
Having the same issue!!

Yes, we've sent it to LG for repairs and they were able to fix it easily.
Sfkn, was your phone rooted when you sent it to them? I'm having the same issue, and it either started happening today, or I just noticed it today, but it's bugging the crap out of me. I'm running stock kk, rooted with twrp and on the cloudyfa kernel.

Hope it wont come back.
You can unroot the device by flashing original rom with LG flash tool.
