Buy the 3G version or use a dongle? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im contemplating whether i should get the 32GB WIFI and use it with a dongle or get the 3G version.
What is more preferred considering price and effectiveness?

Price: Dongle + USB host cable = less than $50
Effectiveness: They'll both get you online; a dongle may be capable of 4g data (mine is)
Product that exists: The 3g nexus hasn't been released yet.

^^^^ The flip-side is that the 3g version WILL be out in about a week and its more convenient not to have to carry a separate dongle.
Personally I have just ordered the Wifi version and will set it to automatically bluetooth tether to my phone when out and about. With the right set-up its as simple as knocking the Wifi off on the Nexus 7 for the tether to take place so its not an issue, never even have to touch or unlock the phone.

You could use wifi hotspot on your phone too. I currently do that with my HTC One S and 16 GB Nexus 7.

care to elaborate on that a bit? i have trouble bt-tethering, only works for a few minutes. i would expect it to be less battery consuming on the phone (gnex for me) than the wifi.

I do this too.
It's a case of 2 taps on my phone, and my Nexus will detect and connect automatically.
But if I had to choose dongle or built in, built in for convenience, dongle if I wanted 4g.

I was indeed thinking about tethering to my Sensation, though im a bit afraid it might eat up the phone's battery too quickly when im outside and i will be left without or little battery.

You can use OpenGarden app to tether via bluetooth..

Bluetooth uses a lot less power, I will do a test tonight with my one X.
I tend to find 5 hours of WiFi hotspotting on my phone will drain about 50% of the battery.

Download an app called PPP Widget. Most 3G dongles require little more than that, although there are a few that require some extra footwork.

Sorry for the late reply, only just saw the reply.
I use these two free apps from the play store, Bluetooth Auto Connect/Bluetooth Auto Tether. :good:

if N7 only has 3g and a dongle gets you 4g, to me its a no brainer..
i am new about this and still lil bit fuzzy::
what about the carriers different bands, is that all setup in the dongle?
so, a dongle is carrier specific?
i do realize that it has to accept a sim card
thanx

I got the 32gb WiFi one and got a mifi portable 3g HSDPA+ hotspot from three. As long as I turn on the mifi the nexus just connects to it when I'm not in range of my home network.

[Q] Is the 3G model going to be worth it in the USA?

Anyone have any ideas if the 3G will be worth it, there are some discouraging posts over at the notion ink blog, in the comments section, about the bandwidth limitations on the 3G models and them being selected for you, instead of allowing us to pick our own.
(I am one of the ones that did not get a pre-order in on time)
It would be considered a new contract on AT&T so you would not have unlimited data. Also in the US it is only for AT&T
Why thank you for that, being a sprint person, and an Android lover, AT&T is certainly not something I want to deal with, at least that helps me with my decision, I'll just have to use a USB Sprint 4G adapter... :

If you have an android phone I would recommend root it and install wifi tether. Rooting is a very simple process for the EVO at unrevoked.com and I am not sure if it will have support for a usb adapter. You might get the MiFi that is coming to Sprint soon.
Interesting topic. Since I am also on Sprint, its probably better off just getting the Wifi version and wifi tether to the EVO or pdanet. Now when Traveling overseas where Sprint doesn't work (except Jamaica and Taiwan) I guess the wifi will have to just do.

Can you tether an Android device to an Android device? I have purchased EasyTether, I use it for work when I have to drive between states, but did not know they made an Android app to tether to, I thought it only worked on PC's. I'll have to go to their website and look into it.
On Android if you root it you can install a WiFi Tether application that allows you to turn your phone into a hot spot without having to pay Sprint.

It is a standard feature but the service providers locked it down so you would have to pay them to use it. The nexus one and s are the only ones that have it enabled.
You can pick your carrier with the adam
Rohan's interview on Android Police states:
AP: Regarding the 3G model, how many frequency sets are being offered? In the US, AT&T and T-Mobile run on different 3G bands, necessitating at least two US 3G models.
Rohan: Initially we offered only one 3G module which was suited for AT&T, but then when customers requested we changed their models. From next pre-order everyone will be given an option of deciding their own 3G module for a specific frequency.
So, if you have already pre-ordered but want a different carrier...email them and provide your order info with your carrier preference. If you pre-order now you will have an option to indicate your choice
Data limitations will be determined by cell carrier not this device. And yes, every company but Sprint has a limit on data right now. Come to think of it, Sprint might have a limit for their USB hotspot and for the devices that have an EVDO radio in them, not sure on that.
Regardless as others stated, if this bothers you just wifi tether. But I have a Chrome Netbook with a verizon connection in it and I love it. Not having to deal with wifi tether all the time is nice.

I just ordered my Adam and the only model left was the Pixel Qi 3G version. If I had a choice, I would have gone wifi only because I don't have AT&T as a carrier (I have Verizon). Was it just me that found a lack of info on the website about the 3G carrier requirements? It wouldn't have changed my order (because I ordered to late), but it seemed a little vague. I'm still stoked to get the adam though.
Cheers!

Since T-Mo is carrying the Nexus 4...no tethering without the proper plan?

Right now I have no problem tethering off my Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile with an unlimited plan, whether on my tablet, laptop, or desktop. The Nexus 4 looks pretty nice, but my concern - since T-Mobile is also carrying it, does that mean it'll have the capability to block tethering without the proper plan, even using the Play unlocked version? Does the T-Mobile one even have anything confirmed other than a higher price? Apparently 42Mbps speeds are confirmed on the Play version through the Google press release and the Play Store specs are wrong.
I know its all speculation at this point since nobody has the phone, but that'd be a huge factor as to whether I sell my Galaxy Nexus now and go back to my HTC G2 until I get the Nexus 4 (while I can still get a decent amount for it), or just get my high-performance fix with the Nexus 10 (which I'd be planning to get regardless after selling my Toshiba Thrive).
If you can root it, you can tether w/o being charged a fee. True story.

I can say it's entirely true. No problems tethering with root on ATT or VZW with my Captivate, Atrix or Gnex using either WiFi Tether free app or built in AP via AOKP or CM for 3+ years in at least 2 states. So if you are having problems, you are doing it wrong.

How exactly can you root "wrong" like you're saying? Fact is, I've gotten the "get a hotspot plan" pages when tethering to my laptop/desktop numerous times while I had my G2, running both CM7 and CM9. Maybe T-Mobile is just more stringent about sniffing out tethering?

No, no. My VZW LTE tethered from my Gnex is more reliable than my Charter cable internet, in fact I use it as a backup when Charter goes out. (which is a few time a month.) If you don't have data it is because of your carrier. And when I said doing it wrong I meant tethering not rooting. There are many many threads on how to properly tether. When done properly tethering works 100% of the time, not having data to tether is a different issue altogether.

It seems to be pretty well established that T-Mobile is packet-sniffing to detect unauthorized tethering. It appears that they detect the User Agent string if you are using Internet Explorer or Chrome (but apparently not Firefox, I imagine because Android Firefox is able to pretend to be the desktop version with one tap). Changing the User Agent string for your browser or using a VPN tunnel circumvents the detection, and non-browser access (SSH, SMTP, etc.) is not checked, either. All that's independent of whether you are rooted or not.
just install a user agent add on or extention on your laptop. Firefox and chrome both have them, i set mine to nexus 7 user agent and the tether blocking pages go away for good.

IMEIs are assigned in blocks. Even if they don't have access to the info from the manufacturer, (they almost certainly do), they can still figure it out. If, for example, they've sold Nexus 4s with IMEIs 1001 and 1003, and you log onto their network with 1002, they can draw a pretty solid conclusion.
The hard part is figuring out if you're tethering or not, which requires invasive packet sniffing if the phone itself doesn't report tethering (that's how they track tethering with branded devices). I don't believe, based on my quick research, that T-Mo is sniffing everyone's packets. Which means they probably aren't watching you unless you are streaming 20GB a month. They are tracking user agents on branded phones, it seems.

Get WIFI Version Now or Wait For 3G Version

I plan to use the Nexus 10 mostly at home on WIFI but would like the option of using it away from home, especially on holiday and cannot ever see me using it as a phone, so I just need Internet access.
I'm considering getting a MIFI which I can use when not at home and it will allow me to connect up to 5 devices and I can position the MIFI in the best place for reception whilst I use the devices where it is most comfortable. Also the reception on a MIFI seems better and you can add an antenna to improve it further.
I've tried using my phone as a hot spot on holiday but the reception indoors was not good enough.
So I'm planning to get the WIFI version and buy a MIFI for mobile use and not bother waiting for the 3g version to come out.
The difference in cost between the WIFI version plus MIFI and a 3G version is probably not much.
Has anyone else tried a MIFI + Antenna with an Android tablet and if so which one and how well did it perform?
Any reason to not just set up a phone as a mobile hotspot?

I don't want a 3g tablet so no waiting for me.
I have a 4g mobile hotspot that I can use when I need internet away from regular wifi.It is Verizon so is fast and works with everything instead of haveing several devices on a plan.It is so small I can stick it in a pocket if I needed to and have wifi anywhere on anything instead of just one device.
Unlimited LTE (w/Verizon) + FoxFi = WiFi version for me.

No problem! Used it for the first time the other night and it worked great! I believe Sprint & AT&T have it blocked on the Play Store (if you use them). Here's the direct link to get around that http://foxfi.com/bin/
Also, WiFi mode does not work with 4.1 (except on the Verizon Galaxy Nexus). Hopefully they're working on a fix for that...

So what makes you think you'd get any better reception with the Nexus 10 if your phone isn't getting reception either? IMHO, data plans on these devices are a complete and total scam/waste of money. Get the wifi version and tether on your phone. If you are grandfathered into VZW or have the T-Mo/Sprint Unlimited plans you are golden. ATT throttles so screw them.

When I was on holiday in my flat in Spain I had to take my Note One outside on a balcony to get 3g. So I'm hoping that a MIFI with an aerial option placed on the balcony will enable me to stay inside and get 3g.
Also I have a 7.7 and a laptop which also had difficulty getting 3g inside the flat and a MIFI might solve that too with no extra cost.
An MIFI solution will not cost any more than a 3g Nexus 10 which I would need to wait for and I don't want to use the Nexus 10 for making phone calls.
The other reason I like the MIFI solution is that I can go out with my phone and the Nexus 10, 7.7 and laptop can still be used by others in the flat.
I had the same dilemma with the TF101. Luckily I didn't wait for the 3G version in the end as it was released months later.
I'm very happy with a MiFi device. Its on a 30 day contract (1GB for £7 per month) and best of all my tablet isn't consuming extra power running a 3G aerial. I use it every day for 3 hours on the train and charge it every few days.
The signal is also far better then my S3 and S2. But I guess it's designed to keep a high speed data connection open at all times.

But is there any information about a Nexus 10 with 3G/LTE capabilities???
Again, tether your 4G/LTE phone and connect via wifi for 4G speeds. If you are on an unlimited plan you'll have unlimited LTE going straight to it. If you are an unrooted phone learn to root and use FoxFi or install a custom rom with the wifi tethering baked in. If you have an iCrap it should already have the tethering option IIRC.

[Q] external usb dongle?

SO, i was getting an alright signal indoors at work from a nearby wi-fi, then i unlocked and rooted my N7 so i could access superuser. Now the same networks i was connected to can hardly connect, and only seem able to after i spend a few minutes outside.
So i was hoping to get a better signal, using a linksys wireless-g usb adapter
model wusb54gc
i tried "ppp widget" but that seems to be made for a 3g dongle, it DOES see the dongle, but doesn't know what to do with it.
Does anyone know of a way i can make this work, whether it be downloading some files, or an app or two?
I'm pretty sure the 7 won't use a dongle. It's been discussed before. I'd love it if I could plug in my Alfa Awu and gain the antenna strength and use it to inject packets, but the ROM needs to support this and none that I know of does. I also, from reading other threads, think this is a hardware issue.

Tethering to Router

Hello Everyone,
I was recently got the Idea of buying a 4G LTE router from Verizon to share my data because I have unlimited on our federal government plan. We want to test out this out right now until we can later buy cradlepoint devices. I was wondering if I could tether my phone to my new wireless router the ASUS RT-N66R which does support 3G/4G. The router is on the latest firmware currently. I spent hours trying to get it to connect until 2 things worked for me. If I put the router into Repeater mode I can get a signal off my phone using wifi tether. That's a Motorola Droid 4 Rooted on 4.1.2 which I would like to use to tether full time to the router. For some reason I can't tether USB to the router but wifi to router works Now when I used my company phone we pay for hotspot and tethering well I turned tethering on it did not work. The Tethering from phone to the router worked when I put in *99***9# I don't understand why but it worked and it was fast. I also was using a galaxy S4. So I was wondering if anyone had a solution to me using my personal phone to share data but I need to get the USB tethering to work I don't know if anyone knows a bypass to use the official usb tether. All help is appreciated.

Yeah. Well I bought a Asus 66u router so it supports 4g but do you know how to USB tether it without using the official USB tether

I wanted to buy it at Verizon but they said it has to be on a new share data plan or I have to turn my unlimited data into a 12gb plan which isn't happening. They said I can't switch devices either.

Sadly I dont think there is a way. I`m not sure if there is even a way to do it even if you could offically use usb tether. Why not just use it as an access point? thats pretty much what your doing anyway.

I already tested it out did you read my original post? Through my company phone I can use the official USB Tether option to stream 4G through the USB port at full speeds. With my other phone that has unlimited data I use WiFi tether then setup the Router as a repeater or access point to receive the 4G that way. I mean as long as i get 4G I am fine i just wanted the full speeds and all options of the router. if i put the router in access point mode the option are very limited in features.
I was testing on a nexus4 WiFi/Bluetooth/USB tether and the max speed the Bluetooth could connect was like 10kb/s, USB tether was 10.0MB/s and WiFi tether was like 68 or 70MB/s and for some reason the WiFi tether connection varied in the max throughput for some reason... I am not talking about the 4g max speed, but rather the max connection the phone can send out of BT, USB, & WIFI. you might be handcuffing/bottlenecking your connection through USB.
