[Q] Should i get the Tab 7.7....or wait for the nexus tablet?

I need your opinions, should i get the Tab 7.7? or wait for the nexus tablet? I am liking the size (around 7) and the reviews of the 7.7 are all good. what do u think?

Well the GPS is topnoch, I havent had any problems with celldata or wifi, overall HC
isent that bad. In all I got to say the hardware kicks ass on stock HC and if ICS is an improvement thats a big extra!
Yup I like the 7.7, nice unit.

the nexus tablet is likely to be in the 200-250 range, while the 7.7 is around 500...the biggest reason to get the 7.7 is the super amoled plus screen. if you don't care about the screen quality, i would go with the google tablet.

I'm on the fence as well. Heard rumors that the Nexus won't have 3G. I'll gladly get a Galaxy Tab then.
Can't tell for sure until the Nexus is officially unveiled.

Even of the nexus hasn't got 3g what it will do is quickly drive down android tablet costs. If Google push a nexus device (nexus phones are pushed as being the pinnacle of Android design) for 200 then Samsung and everyone else will have difficulty keeping a 100%+ premium over it.

I would wait for Android tablets to catch up with the iPad3 dpi before buying, which I hope will begin to happen with the next generation of premium Android tablets.

I am married to SAMOLED+, a wacom digitizer, and screen casting capabilities. So far the only device to satisfy all three has been the samsung galaxy note. But this screen is just SO much larger, it was worth the extra real estate. This is the first really operable digital sketchpad, i'd say over the ipad(screen quality) and the gNote(size). It is imperfect only in thst it lacks a wacom digitizer in my opinion.

I'm going to hold out as long as i can ;p
Maybe i'll buy it and have two tabs. $199 is cheap lol

Ive thought about the micro sd and don't see it as an issue as long as there is an sd card/usb host adapter, then on long journeys we can still have movies etc on that

What would the nexus at $200 have to offer asside from Android 5? I dont think it would be a supperior tab to the current 7.7 and the possible lack of 3g it would mean you would have to carry 2 devices. Until no more 3g+wife tabs are released i will never consider anything else less. Just my 2 cents

How is the 7.7 a "dead platform"? There will be an ICS update some time this summer, and the hardware will be superior to the Nexus in most ways.

I own a galaxy nexus and the user experience blows honeycomb out of the water. The software experience could be enough to sway a purchase. You don't need to Carry two tabs either lol. Can leave one at home for home media purposes or something. One for desk at work, etc... or just buy it and evaluate two, sell one of em later.

At a supposed price of $200 i doubt it will be a superior item, i understand the Nexus is a top line (Nexus phones) i dont see at this price what it can try and compete with. The Kindle? Maybe. The Ipad, not in a million years.

The leaked specs for the Nexus 7 look decent enough and handily seem to wipe the floor with the kindle fire. I doubt i'll just give up this beautiful 7.7 without evaluating things anyways. And who mentioned an iPad? I could give 2 ****es about the iPad ;p

Well now that the specs are out, I'm still happy with my last week purchase of the GT 7.7. I can increase storage and have a better screen. Only outspecced by BT 4 on the Nexus 7, if it has BT 4.
Plus I have to say comparing the Exynos of the GT 7.7 to the Tegra3 of the Transformer Prime, it feels snappier than the Prime, and that is on 3.2 HC! Cant wait for ICS (or hopefully much rather JB!) on it.
Haven't tried gaming on th GT 7.7 though.

Maybe it is just in the videos I've seen but does the screen rotate to landscape mode or is it stuck in portrait?

Here's my take on the two tablets.
1. Memory
I think the lack of micro SD slot on the Nexus is a big disadvantage compared to the Sammy 7.7. You can pick up 64gb micro SD cards now for $60-80. Depending on your main uses, 16gb (or worse still 8gb) can be very limiting if you throw on some music and some 720p videos, let alone games.
I have the HDMI dongle for the Sammy and can output 1080p to a TV which is great when traveling.
2. Camera
The Nexus also appears to miss out on a rear-facing camera (not a big deal imo but another point of difference).
3. Battery
Samsung battery appears to be almost 18% bigger (5100mah v 4325mah).
4. Form factor
The form factor of the Nexus would seem to be not quite as slick as the 7.7:
Nexus 7: 198.5 x 120 x 10.45mm
Samsung 7.7: 196.7 x 133 x 7.9 mm
Weight appears to be same (or thereabouts).
With a smaller screen and less features, I would have thought that the Nexus could have been a bit trimmer.
5. Software
On the other hand we probably won't see Jelly Bean on the Samsung for another year, if at all.
Jelly Bean supposedly has Project Butter enhancements to make the OS smoother and slicker, however given the performance of the S2 on ICS I think I'd be relatively happy with ICS on the 7.7.
Overall I don't really see the need for a quad core processor when the dual core is still perfectly capable. I'm not prepared to compromise on the above factors for the processor alone, the benefits of which are debatable given how much better the Exynos architecture seems to be.

I forgot to add that whilst I wouldn't give up my 7.7, the introduction of the Nexus 7 can only be a good thing as it will raise awareness of Android tablets and lower the barrier to entry, ie. cost, effectively bringing Android to the masses by a respected vendor.
More competition = better products.

I pre ordered a nexus 7 but now thinking of cancelling

I ordered it mostly just because jellybean looks so awesome i had to have it. But now that the benchmarks have been released along with the full specs, im actually now somewhat convinced it is inferior to my ics running n7000, or at the least equal. I ran the gl 2.1 benchmark that anandtech ran and my stock (not overclocked ) note actually scored higher in all 4 benchmarks than the "12 core" tegra 3. So besides battery life and jellybean, im pretty meh at this point. Anyone else have similar feelings? Or am i really missing something?

For the price point; the Nexus 7 is a nice investment. The specs are solid. If you have disposable income it's hard not to throw $200 at the 7 and at the very least make it a part of your coffee table.
I'm in the boat that I will upgrade my Note to the Note 2 as no doubt the spec leap will be much bigger than the Nexus 7.

Dude the price is low for that 7"
So it worth it x2 each dollar, if you r looking an upgrade just wait the note 2 or other device

I'm with you in debating on it OP.
I've yet to put an order in as the Note 2 looks rather promising, however watching media on the 7" display would be lovely, and Tegra 3 aught to have enough power to handle S/W decoding of 10bit 720p, but I've also read that the S3 seems to handle it fine, and if the Note 2 will be a 'larger S3' then I might as well save the money and wait.
It's a tough decision, since it's realistically the best 7" tablet to come out yet.

Haha benchmarks, it'll handle whatever you throw at it and with custom roms on it will be even better...stop worrying about benchmarks they really don't mean **** on phones and tablets.

Can't wait for my nexus 7 tablet

What is the point of buying it if you are basing that decision on purely benchmarks and OS version?
Are you actually going to make use of the extra screen space compared to the note?
If yes buy it, if not dont, simple

The Nexus 7" looks amazing for the price. The only downside is the lack of SD card slot.
I'm not sure if they left it out for cost reasons or to avoid annoying the other manufacturers.
I won't personally be getting one as I'm holding off buying a tablet until Win 8. You just know someone will bring out a device that dual boots in to win8 and android.

About a month ago I bought a Galaxy Tab 2 (7") for my Fiance as she wanted something like a kindle but that did a bit more. 16 Gb was £200 if the Nexus Tab has been out for £150 with better spec and newer OS I would have thought that was a great buy if you want a 7" tab.
I dont get this comparing tabs and phones. Its like comparing apples and oranges. Both fruits but not the same thing.

Except that the galaxy note is a phablet, a hybrid device. Thus the issue here.
To the person who said I only used benchmarks, not exactly. I was just saying that the 1.4ghz dualcore exynos with mali400 seems to still be a top dog and even beats/equals the "12core" tegra 3. Pretty impressive.
I do know the nexus 7 is a great device for $200. It doesn't have everything a galaxy note has like mhl, 5ghz wifi or sdslot but in terms of raw performance, screen resolution the $249 version is equal to my 16gb GT-N7000. No doubt it is an impressive device for the price. I found a deal on mine at Jr.com for $222 shipped 16GB version but that pre-order quickly sold out.
Even still I hesitate. It will probably only be a couple of months before the devs make a good port of jellybean for our note. Having a pure google device however does appeal to me. I'm still torn. Luckily it wont ship for another 10 days so I have all that time to decide.

That is the Galaxy Nexus phone, not the Nexus 7 tablet. Personally, the Galaxy Note eliminates the need of a tablet for me.

It's 7 inches. Not even 2 full inches of difference between the Note and Nexus. And you can put the Note in your pocket and take it everywhere with you. And since Nexus 7 does not use full tablet UI - it's basically "a bigger note" ( exaggeration for purpose of the thread ).
It all depends on your needs though. I really prefer to have just 1 device that i can carry everywhere, always. Tablets, even 7" are not that mobile despite all the marketing.

If its any help i currently take my note with me everywherr daily. I use my Galaxy Tab 10.1 for browsing, gaming and watching movies (in bed). I use the Galaxy Tab 2 for reading and general messing about.
I admit 1 person doesnt need all 3 in their life but I do prefer web browsing at home on either of the tabs as I find it better with the bigger screens and the same for reading and movie watching whilst at home.

There won't be any tablet ui in jellybean, it's gonna be universal like the galaxy nexus looks. Jellybean fully merges the tablet and phone ui together 100%. Any tablet that will support jellybean will look like the nexus 7 ui, no more tablet look.

That's not true. In another thread I read someone has already hacked the Nexus 7 to give it a tablet ui.

The Note is also a phone and has 3G... and 2 good cameras.
The Nexus 7 is a nice tablet (low end price with good specs) but it cant be the only device to take, a good companion to a phone maybe.

Hi all, I'm considering buying a nexus 7. I have a thrive 10.1,but find it bulky to type in portrait mode. I use it to take a lot of notes on students, but also for the Web and reading on the weekend. Anyone give up a 10.1 for a 7 screen? Is it that big of a difference?

I own a Galaxy Tab 10.1.. I had the same issues with it as you did. Yes it's a big difference from the N7 but for me it made ALL the difference. Portrait mode is perfect to use and type on and landscape mode is perfect for web browsing.. 10.1 was just too bulky for me.. I always felt burdened by it like I was carrying around a computer monitor and not a convenient and productive piece of technology.
My Tab 10.1 now sits on the shelf as I wait for pershoot to pump out some new CM10 builds for it and I plan to just use it as a media center interface. Meanwhile me, my Nexus S and N7 are attached at the hip

I had a 10" HP Touchpad with CM9 that I really liked, but after using a friend's Nexus 7 for a little while, I decided to sell the Touchpad while they were still selling on eBay fora decent amount and buy a Nexus 7. I have had the Nexus for a couple weeks now and have found I use it a lot more than I did the Touchpad since it is a lot more convenient. Also, now when I pick up my wife's iPad, it feels HUGE and unwieldy!
I have not missed the larger screen at all.

I like the 7" size, as it seems to be a happy medium. It's easy to hold with one hand and read. Its comfortable in landscape mode and much more comfortable for playing games. It's easy to carry and to toss into my purse or a pack. I don't watch movies much but it's a nice personal size for viewing. My other device is a HP touchpad and it feels large and heavy in comparison.

Sold my Galaxy Tab 10.1 16GB WiFi for the money to buy an 8GB Nexus7, and didn't regret it for an instant. It's actually portable, it's ridiculously fast, and while it has a smaller screen than the GTab10.1, it's the same resolution, which results in a much more crisp picture.
We now have two Nexus7's in the house: an 8GB and a 16GB. We'll be adding a 32GB as soon as they start showing up for purchase.

Nevermind the GTAB 10.1 had a bug in portrait mode that caused it to lag like hell.. Even their ICS update had it. Samsung really screwed the pooch with the tab 10.1.. It seriously under performed considering it was a dual core tegra 2.

Sold mine as soon as the n7 came out. Hadn't made it to ICS yet. I hear they run VERY well on JellyBean though, especially with all that TouchWiz crap stripped away

I was a hardcore 10 clincher, had four tablets in the 10 inch variety and loved my prime and keyboard. But 7 inches is perfect for almost everything I use a tablet for. In fact since the nexus 7 launched, I got mine before preorders shipped but I dunno the date, I haven't used anything that would be better on a 10 inch screen.

I know alot of people that once they got a 7 ince tab, mainly the Nexus 7, they no longer used/wanted to use, their 10 inch, as it was uncomfortable, heavy and just too big to be portable.
7 inch is the way to go, I personally think 8 inch would be perfect, but 7 inch it is.

Get a 16 for sure, or wait for the 32.. 8 is just too small

I personally enjoy the size, it works for me immensely. And is super portable.

It's not the size of the tab that's important, but the skill with which you wield it.
I like the 7" and find it very easy to transport. But it is important to give your eye's more "visual breaks" and look arround more. I seem to get more eye fatigue with the 7" if I'm not careful.
So to add another overused phrase to this thread.
Be careful how you handle that 7" tab, you could go blind.

After looking at the narrow Nexus 7 it felt like a big phone, didn't like it. I love android, had all the top phones and tablets. Decided to keep the galaxy s4, and for the tablet none of the tablets are any good for android. I feel like the iPad mini has the best size screen even with the low resolution it looks more cleaner and more space on the screen. Android tablets are still can't fide the real comfortable size. Galaxy Tab 3 8 is the best size I wish Nexus was made by samsung . like a Nexus 8.
Android is the best so I might return the iPad mini and get a tab 3 8 inch.

I have been struggling with the narrower screen myself. My mini is idea screen size and weight. Google has everything else beat except the narrow screen. It really is like a big phone. I will certainly sell this N7 if a mini retina comes out.

lol okay, that's why the Nexus 7 and New Nexus 7 were such big sellers, right? lol. these whiny threads are getting ridiculous; time for a cleanup.

Its narrow for many reasons.
Easier to hold in one hand, lack of availability of high resolution screen at 8 inch, and battery consumption.
Sorry you got the mini instead but you should've spent more for the iPad 4 instead because the mini is more of a compromise than the new Nexus 7. I personally can't stand using iPad mini due to the screen resolution. I love the 8 inch size but still prefer 1280x800 7 inch, and the new Nexus has 1920x1200 which also has absolutely stunning accurate colors.

I wish there was a good 4:3 tablet for Android. It really makes the screen feel much roomier

I myself wish the N7 was a N8, but 16:10 is a perfect balance between text reading and widescreen multimedia, and you're doing a lot of the latter.

I like the narrow shape of the Nexus 7 because it actually fits in the pocket much better than the old one. Ipad mini will not fit in any of my pockets. But I can understand in getting a iPad mini but not this one; wait until they do something with the screen. The mini is old and out gunned by this Nexus and it's a full $100 cheaper when comparing list cost. Even if both were the same price the new Nexus is still the clear winner. There is no competition for the Nexus 7 FHD at the moment. Just stating the facts.

Android tends to have screens that come in 16:9 aspect ratio (or similar size) and iPads use a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Each has their plus and minus. Most prefer watching video on a 19:9 display and internet surfing on iPad type display. Watching video on a 4:3 display bothers me more than surfing on a 16:9 display. I also like the "narrowness" of the new Nexus 7, as it make it easy to hold one handed and adds to portability.
To each their own, as long as you happy... all is good.
As far as non of the Tablets being any good for Android, I and many others would disagree. But it's you opinion, and your entitled to it, but it is just that... an opinion.
I have to say, and don't take this the wrong way. I'm not really sure why you felt the need to make such a post, that really does nothing but clutter the forum. I sometimes have to restrain myself from posting things, because I decide it's just not worth posting and does not contribute to the community.

if a screen has crap resolution, it doesn't matter how big it is; it's awful to look at, and it's not a good screen. the ipad mini screen technology is years old, yet STILL more expensive than a nexus 7 which is current tech. i'm sorry, but i'd rather look at an inch smaller screen with a much higher resolution than an ipad mini where you can literally see every single pixel because it's just an awful screen.

Nexus 7 screen is beautiful but too narrow. I'll just give the iPad to my kid and get me a Galaxy tab 3 8inch. Hate the iOS.

I feel you on the size I would kill for a nexus 8 but you just paid more for an 8 inch iPad 2 like 100 dollars more and the new one will be out in September. I love the design and performance of nexus 7 its faster than my gf iPad 4

[Q] Upgrade to Samsung Tab s 10.5

So I have had my nexus 10 for nearly 2 years now. I got it when it first came out. Its a good tablet. Now the Samsung Tab s 10.5 is out is it worth upgrading. I can sell my Nexus 10 for say 200 quid.
The tab s 10.5 with 4g is £430. One thing I want is the SAMOLED display as the nexus 10 screen is pretty rubbish.
Is it worth the upgrade?

I was thinking the same but I decided against. The Verge gave it a pretty average review and they are usually bang on the money (although a little swerved towards Apple sometimes). You will be lucky to get £200 for the N10 more like £150-160.
For me if I was spending £400 on a tablet today it would have to wow me and really stand out from the pack. It would have to ooze class like I remember the first iPad doing when I opened the box and looked at it. It would have to have soul like all great tech product have. From what I have seen the of Tab S it does not posses this. Individually it has great components but like the Verge said, a tablet is more than the sum of its specs, and this is where the Tab S falls short.

How exactly is the nexus 10 screen rubish? It's been the best in class by a mile since it debut.

Well the first day I got it, it has light bleed. I got two mroe replacements both with lightbleed. The Super AMOLED screen is on a different level. I saw it in the shop today and was shocked how nice it looked.
I have the s4 and the screen on that is top notch!

I can see how this year the screens will be better. Sounds like you had hardware issues as mine was and still is top notch.
I was hoping for a nexus 10 2.0 but not in a hurry to upgrade at this point.

The resolution of the screen has been without rival for a very long time, however the colour balance has always been terrible. Anybody with any interest in colour balance and accurate colour replication (i.e. photographers using N10 for in-field review) has been complaining about the N10 screen since release...

I recently sold my Dad's 32gb Nexus 10 on ebay (issues with Skype, not present on mine though) and someone bought it now for £250. Even though you have to bear in mind their sellers fees you'll still definitely get more than £160 for it.
Instead he got a 16gb xperia z2 tablet from pc world for £330. It's a nice bit of kit, I envy the weight saving the most compared to my Nexus the most.

I've just upgraded to the S10.5 and the screen is stunning and almost has a 3-D effect because of it's vibrant colours, deep blacks and dazzling whites and love running two apps at the same time on the larger 10.5 screen.
No overheating or random reboots and it is so thin and light compared to the N10. I've added the Samsung book cover to protect it and use as a stand and it gives it a premium feel like an ipad.
I've also added a 128Gb sd card for storing films, music etc which cannot be done on the N10.
So the S 10.5 is a worthy replacement for the N10.

One of the big problems with the ipad is you can only watch one app at a time. It reminds me of the time many years ago before microsoft introduced the ability to view more than one app at a time and I don't want to go back to that.

The S is much better than our N10, I wouldn't buy it because its GPU isn't nearly as good as it should for the price, the Exynos 5420 is pretty damn outdated, they should have equipped it with a 801 at the very least, even the LTE version sports an 800, which is outdated, I would wait for the refresh of the whole android tablet lineup that will probably come when L is released, we'll probably see lots of ARMV8 based ones

I think that is better wait for next Nexus 10.

Galaxy tab s 10.5! There is no comparison. The Nexus has the pure android blah blah but the Galaxy has the most beautiful display hands down. I still have my Nexus though but it looks like development kinda stopped.

Well nexus 9 just came out so why not grab one of those? It's not too much smaller than the nexus 10. Of course the galaxy s is probably cheaper at this point
