3G Model? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Why there is no 3G model for this tablet, aside from the beautiful display 3G is a breaking point for me. I could use USB modem but it uses the same port used for charging so it won't be so practical. Any ideas if Google might or might not introduce a 3G model later as it did with the nexus 7?

I think they will introduce a 3g modal. But for now just tether with your phone!:
Sent from my GT-I9001 using xda premium

I agree. 3G + SDXC support would have made this tablet a market killer.

I don't want to pay for a separate sim card when I can tether to my s3 on a 3 unlimited data plan. Besides prob not taking mine out of the house much, when I get it.

Buy a MIFI which gives you 3g without using the USB port at no more cost than waiting for the 3g version to arrive.
You will also get better reception with a MIFI for it is designed to do just that and you can place it in the best place to get a good signal and use the tablet where it is most comfortable.
If you own a laptop or other tablet then you can use the MIFI as a hotspot for those as well.
It also means your tablet can be used when your phone is not nearby to tether.

MIFI devices normally have batteries fitted and some have a display showing signal strength and the amount of data downloaded so you can keep an eye on cost.
Check out Amazon which have a good selection,

Thanks for the info, do you know what kind of battery life to expect on them? Would it cover a 3 hour train journey for example?

You should have no problem finding a MIFI with a battery that lasts -3-hours.

How to boost wifi signal?

I dont I need to tell anyone how horribly weak the wifi chip in this phone is. My question is is there a way to boost it in any way? Provide it with more power or something like that?
More power would only fry it. Better reception (i guess that's what you are after) would need better antennas.
Even if more power would help, it would be quite difficult to achieve it. I don't think it could be done from software.
I noticed its quiet weak also wish there was a way to give it a bit of a boost.
are there alternate drivers?

Antenna signal can be increased by applying more mW to the antenna or changing the antenna shape to get more dBi. In our case the 2nd is out of the question unless you're in for a hardware mod. But if there is a specific file which is responsible for that mW parameter than you could potentially give it more juice (I think) and if so it should give you better signal reception and longer range.
Typical WiFi cards are 100mW or less. I think if you look up the FCC specs on our phone it should say what ours output is.
BTW, this will definitely drain your battery faster.
The FCC link to NS4G
The WiFi range on this phone is pathetic.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
From the documents the best channel you should use is channel 6 if you can chose it on your router. It also looks like 802.11g is the standard which gave the largest bBi from it's antenna.

Try out wifi tx power. It's on the market and it says it can adjust power suplly on the antenna

Three {uk} all you can eat tethering

So with all you can eat data they don't allow you to tether ..
There's the clockworkmod app that will make it work with USB tethering so they can't detect it .
But what about wifi hotspots. Is there an app for wifi hot spots so that they can't detect it ?

I'm on a contract also rather than PAYG so may be the reason.
Any updates on this?
I'm on a 2GB a month plan, for £5, but can switch to all-you-can-eat for £3 a month, be he was banging on about no use on a laptop as modem. Surely if the phone is doing the tethering, how would they know?
Has anyone done the switch recently? I have a Galaxy S2, but I'm sure this is irrelevant for this topic.
Cheers,
Carl.

Maybe it only detects it if you use more than one device connected via tethering? Brave enough to test it?
I've had my three contract since around April. Was tethering fine until about 3 weeks ago when I was presented with the said "no tethering allowed" web page!!! :crying:
I'm very interested in this thread.
If I insert the sim on a usb 3g stick and plug it to the PC is it also considerated as tethering?
And 3G wifi routers?
USB tethering with any special aplication is undetectable?
I have three contracts on the one plan and all work fine for tethering all part of the plan. My daughters boyfriend has a normal all you can eat data plan, if he tries to tether via a laptop or pc he gets the message, yet if he tethers via an android tablet he doesn't get it and can use as much data as he wants.
Has anyone managed to get anywhere with this?, I'm paying £5 extra for tethering but they limit me to 1GB per month even though I have an all-you-can-eat data plan!.
I want to use the same 3G connection for my PC as I do for the phone so they can't see what I'm up to and can use more than 1GB without getting rumbled.
Do you think they're using port numbers (e.g. 8080) to see if it's a PC or an android device?

Nexus7+ Galaxy Nexus on plan
Have query in regards to not being very familiar with using wifi, and with tethering a tablet to a phone.
Have GSM Galaxy Nexus on 2Gb monthly plan and being given a Nexus7 for Christmas. I figured they would make a good pair.
What I want to know is how quick will my Galaxy Nexus battery drain if I am tethering the tablet, or is it unlikely that I will really use the tablet like that often. I just figure as I am reasonably new to smartphones and never had a tablet, I could do with some advice about how they typically get used so I can purchase the Nexus& with Sim slot if that is recommended.
So far as I can tell, I will probably mostly use the tablet at home when the phone is plugged in, and if I do want to use the tablet out and about, I should be able to get a couple of hours tethering out of the phone battery anyways. I have only purchased the wifi version at the moment (only one available) but I would like to hear what some more experienced people have to say about this. Do I really need mobile data on my tablet?
Am I going to be kicking myself for a fool later if I do not get it?
Any help would be much appreciated.

weird battery

i got my nexus 4 two days ago. it was great, but found out the battery is weird. when it is 99% charged, it says a few seconds if battery life left. when its 12% on battery, it says i have 12 hours of battery... why is that? do i need to contact them to get another one? and the battery life is not very good... my friend who have the same phone, has a greater battery life than mine.
does low signal affect the battery life?

Yes, the lower the signal is, the phone will have to transmit with higher power to reach the cell towers
It has a VERY high impact on battery life!

So if the 3g network signal always stays high, the battery life can last one day when mobile data is on 24/7?

What make it worst is the carrier I have, is a att's MVNO...it won't even help me configure mobile data correctly. Now, my mobile data always get disconnected and reconnect...worst carrier ever had!
Still, the reverse predict battery is really weird...
You're seeing the time on battery backwards. It's only showing how much time has passed while the phone has been using battery. It does not have anything to do with time remaining.
you read the wrong thing; the number you read tells you how long the phone has been disconnected
& the battery setting never tells you how much time you have left on battery unless you download an app that lets you do that
oh. oops the longest i ever saw is 20 hours..
I'll try to have it on without simcard for a day and see.

Are you on the latest update? 4.2.2? If not, try updating. If you are on the latest radio...then possibly the nexus has a weaker radio than your Xperia or the radio is defective. Try someone else's T-mobile sim in your phone see if it has the same issues. If you still have issues, a factory reset is always a good option. If that doesn't help then RMA or sell it and get another phone. Good luck

IDK if you'll get them to give you a new one....but you can try. You can certainly get them to repair it if anything.
I factory restored it before doing other steps. The wifi went back to "normal". On the 5GHz wifi, I'm getting 50mbps download testing the battery life without the sim card to see if it is really the weak signal causing the problem.
I'm willing to bet it will when I'm home and upstairs I have 3 or 4 bars of signal I can get 5 plus hours of screen on time I go downstairs where I have one bar or two I'm lucky to get three hours of screen on time and less then 15 hours before I have to charge the phone

So has anyone found a solution to the bad reception and 4glte bouncing around to no service. I've read several forums so I'm not the only one . I find it helps to turn on airplane mode then turn it off. Resetting the radios often helps it pick up 4g again.
We shouldn't have to keep toggling just to maintain lte. I called Verizon the other day and they put in a ticket but I don't think much is going to come of it.
This phone's reception is much weaker than the droid DNA. In places I got steady 4g, it now goes back and forth from 3g.
The signal strength is like a good 10-20+dbs worse than the DNA in the same spots. (I'm pretty much only at work and home do nothing's changed except the phone).
Sometimes with this phone, it'll show connected to lte (1-2 bars on the icon) but I can't get anything to load. No websites, no rhapsody streaming, nothing. All apps time out trying to connect. But that might be just a specific area at work. Regardless, I'm sure that even at home, the signal strength is always over -100 when the DNA would regularly be sub -100
So annoying.

OP, have you dropped your phone perhaps? I just read about the "LDS" technology they started using beginning with the Note 3 that integrates the antenna into the actual frame of the device. They say stress on the frame could cause the antenna itself inside to crack affecting signal.

I don't think people in here realize different manufacturers phones get different reception. HTC and Moto phones will ALWAYS get better signal. Its a fact of life. Just because your note 3 is newer doesn't mean anything.
And if your still thinking of switching to Dev Edition for better signal, your in for a surprise..... That phone has the same radio hardware in it that the Note 3 you currently have does. Wouldn't waste the "couple hundred bucks" looking there for better signal.
PS - my Note 3 gets phenomenal signal. Not as good as my HTC One did (obviously) but better than all the other flagship phones Verizon has had in the last 2 yrs.
