Official car mount: autodetection ? - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I would like to know if somebody here has bought the official car mount:
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Vehi..._11?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1350308561&sr=1-11
Did the car mode automaticaly launch when the SmartAction detect the trigger ? (There's a trigger "is docked : car" into SmartAction)
I bought one for the Razr i, but with mine there's no detection of the dock (SmartAction or Tasker). I just want to know if the Razr m can detect the dock.. maybe Motorola didn't activate the "sensor" as they still not sell the dock for the Razr i.
Thanks

I bought the dock for the M, and it does auto-detect it, but it seems like only after you fully close the latch on top and it fully locks in.

OK thanks
So the support has something to allow the detection, but the razr i doesn't detect it..
Does it need to be plugged? Can you try without the power plug please?

You can also set the M through Smart Actions to launch Car Mode when paired via Blue tooth.

the Official car dock will put the M into vehicle mode automatically....whether it is plugged in or not, and whether the locking bracket is flipped down or not

How does it trigger it? I'm thinking about building a custom dock around my case.

if it is anything like Motorola's prior docks and mounts, the way the phone knows which doc it is and is buy a small magnet in the doc. So the vehicle navigation mount will have a magnet in 1 spot while a desk mount will have the magnet in another spot.

No, nothing like that anymore. There are none magnets in any dock since first Droid and Defy. Motorola has moved away from this method.
It uses special IC inside every dock. Your phone is communicating with it while docked.
That's how they prevented dozens of china cheap dock copies.
I've explained the schematics and detection principle in more details here:

Wow, informative, thank you. Kinda puts a damper on me making my own razr M dock.
I do know for a fact though that a magnet will activate either car mode or dock mode on a droid X. I have done it with magnets personally.

That is indeed interesting information. I've modified 4 Moto Bionic docks for my "M" and have been wondering how they all trigger the phone differently for dock-mode depending on how I select options for each of the 4 docks initially. I think you're onto something that Moto must have started a little while back. There is a circuit board with some electronics inside each dock that I saw when doing the modifications.

Docking stations?

Has anyone seen any docking stations rumored?
I am looking for something that I can drop it in/on and it will go into clock (dock) mode.
Thx!
Just get a normal stand and a charger and an NFC sticker and use Automate It (I think that's the name) to tell it to enter dock mode.

You know the Nexus 7 was supposed to have a dock, it was leaked and everything. We still don't have it.
The answer is probably. Eventually. Some day. Google is HORRIBLE with accessory support, it takes them much longer than it should to release their products.
sadly seems that the N4 doesn't have POGO pins, I love them and they are on the N7 N10 and GNex, I don't understand why google removed them from the N4!
Interesting on the automate - it idea.
I love the POGO pins on our n1's, so easy to pop on the cradle and done. We have 3 cradles.
Google really handled the accessories with the N1 well, maybe after that one they weren't as good, I didn't follow the other devices.
I can't figure out why more devices don't use POGO's... Especially the high end ones like this...

Well, as far as POGO for charging... this one has QI, so there's no need for the pins, just drop it on a compatible pad and it's charging. Anything else could be handled with NFC recognition and bluetooth data exchange.
Right, as long as we can get it to go into doc moed automatically and it sites on a decent angle to be viewed from the side it will suffice.
So far I have not found any.

I hope this will be true, but it's still a lot more complex than the pogo pin solution. Lack of pogo pins is the deal-breaker for me on any upgrade to the N4. If Google does release a dock with all the functionality of the GN docks via Qi, NFC, and Bluetooth that works seamlessly and holds the phone at a good angle for clock mode, they will probably get me to upgrade. Fingers crossed...
That you think about this one - iLuv MobiRock ?

Car mode and dock mode is triggered by magnets

Using an iPad cover, or reasonably strong refrigerator magnet, there seems to be 2 different modes that will be triggered on the phone, depending on where you put the magnet.
Centered on the back of the phone, just below the Motorola logo, you will trigger DayDream/Dock mode.
Placed near the left side (the side without the power and volume buttons), you will trigger car mode.
Have fun!
Good to know, the car dock magnet was a little hard to hit with a refrigerator magnet but the desk dock is easy.

I had the opposite experience, I couldn't manage to trigger the desk dock mode but found the car dock sweet spot pretty quick
Nifty trick for sure.

Does polarity matter at all? For some reason I remember that being important for the dock modes with the original droid.

Yes, polarity matters... my magnets aren't marked so I can't tell you which polarity works, but definitely one end works and one end doesn't.

Is a wireless charging mod for the AT&T / T-Mobile LG G2 feasible? My musings...

I've been mulling this over, and here is where I'm at so far...
Can we develop a relatively easy / straight forward wireless charging mod for the LG G2, similar to what has been done for the Samsung Galaxy S3/4 and Note 2?
At first it doesn't seem that likely, as there's not much space behind the cover of the G2, and not being designed to be removable, is relatively hard to get off. Maybe not that hard though. Some looking around here at XDA shows several people who have removed their back covers to rough them up and get rid of the shiny plastic / tendency to collect fingerprints, so it seems taking it off / putting it back on without damaging the phone is quite possible.
The main thing then is finding a coil / receiver setup thin enough that it won't cause bulging or fitment issues, which may not be possible while retaining the "stock" back.
I suspect we may be able to get around this by using a "snap on" style hard case and some padding to maintain the over all look of the phone, effectively mounting the coil in the resulting gap where the back cover once was. This isn't my idea originally -- I've seen several people do this when using exceptionally thick aftermarket cases for the Galaxy S3, where they either removed the stock back of the phone entirely or built the Palm charging coil in to the back of the case The main issue with this sort of setup would be the area around the buttons / camera lens as it would have a space there and likely collect dust and dirt / be more likely to get damaged. If the stock back becomes available (like via ebay, say) relatively cheaply I could see some people buying a spare and modifying it relatively easy to cover this problem area, we're talking about a thin piece of plastic after all.
The only remaining issue would be getting the coil connected, then. I have yet to open the AT&T version or see a picture of one opened (all the pictures I've seen thus far have been the VZW version with the wireless charging built in) but as I understand the AT&T and T-Mobile versions likely don't include the pogo pins used to connect the charging coil for the VZW version, so we'd have to find somewhere else to connect, likely to the charging pins of the USB port as has been done for other wireless charging mods with earlier phones.
All in all this probably won't be a common mod (we're likely in solid "warranty voiding / can't easily be reversed" territory here) but I don't see any definite reason so far why it wouldn't be doable.
Would anyone else (ideally someone with more "involved" hardware modding experience -- I've just done the Palm Touchstone mod in a few Samsung GS3s) like to chime in here? Suggestions?
I love my G2 and I imagine ROM / community support is going to be great since the Nexus 5 is looking to be based off of it, but after only a week or so of ownership I'm really missing just setting the GS3 on the Touchstone at night, and while the USB port seems sturdy enough I don't like risking it every time I charge.

I have an Optimus G Pro, but a family member got a G2 as a gift. I have Qi, but they don't (T-Mo version). I'd be interested in helping out; just not sure they'd let me open theirs up. Are you sure it lacks the pogo pins? And, additionally, for Qi, could the patch in the G Pro be potentially helpful?
I'm surprised this hasn't gotten more momentum...

You can compare the pins in these pictures. Notice the extra 2 contacts by the NFC contacts on the Verizon version.

and people complain about android fragmentation.
Here we have the same LG G2 and you get wireless charging on one and not on the others. You have to buy the flip case for them based on your carrier. It's rather retarded if you ask me. They should all have the wireless charging.
Not just an LG thing either.
OP, to you answer your question, this isn't possible. I run an android parts shop and we have torn down a D801, D802 and a VS980. I have a D802 myself and wanted the wireless charging ability. My technician said it wasn't possible, the wireless charging module from the VS980 has no place to connect to on a D80x board.
:crying:
The best solution I think would be to solder the coil straight to the USB charging lines, but if that isn't possible I guess you could connect the coil to a USB plug and then just connect the plug on the USB port and leave it there all the time (you'd only need to remove it when you connect the phone to the PC). You would need to find a rather small USB head (ideally one with a 90 degree angle) so it doesn't get in the way.

Agreed. Something like: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Type-A-Micro...t=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item51b4da088d
I actually did this recently to my Verizon Galaxy Nexus. I used a Note 2 Qi Receiver pad. I took my soldering iron and melted plastic casing away to expose 5V and GND where I soldered 2 beads for connection. I then fitted the Qi Pad over the beads and adjusted for a good connection. Added Double Sided tape and applied my Incipio Feather Case. When I removed the case, the double sided tape kept the Qi Pad on the case, where I permanently installed it.
I have the actual back plate cut in half to keep the camera whole sealed, but the battery and Qi pad is exposed. I basically built myself a Qi Charging Case. Remove the case and replace the back cover with a whole one, and it's gone.
Wireless Charging WAS a requirement for my next phone and luckily only the Verizon variant had it. I saw it as fate.
But conclusion is that just because the internal case doesn't have charging leads available, doesn't mean you can't make it happen. To pour salt in the wound, the Qi Charging works fantastic on the VZW model. I use it every day.
I really hope something comes up with this. I've got the ATT D800 and came from a Nokia Lumia 920 with Qi. I still have the Nokia charger and would LOVE to go back to it. I know some people say it's not important, but those are people who have not tried it yet.

My post was specific to the G2. There is obviously no causal link between wireless charging tech in general and spotty GPS reception but it seems to be the case here. Anecdotally, it somehow has an affect on the VZW model's ability to acquire and maintain a lock.

I hadn't read that yet. Sounds like they put the charging coil too close to the GPS antenna.
I've just ordered one off eBay: http://m.ebay.com/itm?itemId=261329370615
They're reasonable cheap so I figured I'd try it out and see how it performs. Not going to solder as of now though

I can't speak definitively, but from my experience the traces for those connections are on the same side as they're surface mounted.

Wireless charging, a new concept (DNA transplant)

The lack of wireless charging was a huge downside to me, a trivial thing I know, but I used the hell out of it on my DNA.
The M8 metal case causes a problem for wireless charging, so the concept I have is as follows:
1. Using a 3d scanner/printer design and print a plastic back
2. Transplant DNA wireless charging to M8
Number 1 is easy, I have access to the materials
Number 2, questionable:
Is the DNA's wireless charger connected to a battery or in some way to the motherboard? I cannot find any information on this that would give me a green light to start the project. Any input form anyone knowledgeable in the area will be appreciated.
Haven't people been using the receiver under a case that connects to charge port with a flat right angle connector?

They have, however for me its not an option (I'm too ocd for that lol, and often carry my phone without a case). I am after a built in solution that will leave the USB port open.

It appears, after looking at wireless charging on the DNA and several other phones, it actually goes through the motherboard itself, so a transplant is a no go.
2nd thought: tapping into the usb port, splicing the wireless receiver directly to it.
Wireless charging, a new concept (DNA transplant) is very interesting and unique.
When i read title of thread i really surprise about it but now i get some information about it.

Ticwatch Pro: Adding either solar or qi charging

I've had the Ticwatch Pro for a few months now and the only thing missing is some way of wireless charging....
I was thinking, since there's a sort of bump underneath it, where the heartrate monitor lies, and knowing where the speaker grill is, there surely must be a way to add a 3d printed device with some small magnets that can act as a holder for a qi coil...
Alternatively, there must be a way to add a a watchstrap with some solar cells (even if it's DIY) with the input to the pogo pin connectors under the watch itself...
Along that second idea, I saw these cells:
https://www.amazon.com/Powerfilm-Flexible-Solar-Panel-MP3-25/dp/B002MF2XCO
Any thoughts?
Ciao
Did you done some steps forward on this idea ?
Nope... still looking....
Good luck !!
I am waiting for my nw TICWATCH pro ... just now bought
I still haven't found anything but I can't believe it's that difficult (at least in my mind)
I just had a vision... I have a semi broken (aesthetics mainly I believe) Moto 360 1st edition which has a charging Qi coil inside it. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIVJb5Q_IHg)
Any idea if I can just rip it out of the Moto and somehow solder it into the Ticwatch? Both devices out of warranty by now anyways....
