[Q] Out of space but not 8GB model - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I own the 8gb model and have about 500mb of sapce remaining.
When i go to download a new app, 12mb in size it says i do not have enough space on the device.
I've heard of the issue on the 16gb version, has anybody had this on the 8gb version ?

Why does your title say NOT 8GB model?
Also, maybe the Nexus saves a bit of space so you don't completely fill your device.
Its like you holding a handful of stuff, you can maybe hold a little bit more, but once you do you will REALLY struggle and perhaps drop them.
Concept is the same?
Could hold it, but would start to struggle, and the dropping could be faults or crashes
Hope that makes sense

[Q] Lenovo TPT HDD and RAM memory lower than in spec

Hi,
I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad tabled with memory specifications of 1GB RAM and 16GB HDD. All nice, until I go in Settings and check at settings/applications/storage use/running and all which show a disappointing values of total memory ~550MB RAM (almost half...) and ~12GB (almost 25% less...).
For HDD, I can not accept that the rest of 4GB are hidden because are used by Android 3.1 or used by file system format. Even so, Lenovo should be honest and declare total memory against available memory even is "eaten" by various reasons.
For RAM, I can not find any explanation why I see only half.
Q1-Can somebody explain me if tablet is faulty or has a kind of manufacturing issue ?
Q2-Can somebody to check if his tablet has the same memory discrepancies versus manufacturer specifications ?
Thanks!
All tablet's have this "cheaty" way of listing specs. But if you buy a laptop and it says 200gb. You can be pretty sure that windows 7 or what ever is installed is taking up space. The same applies to RAM. While the system may come with 4gb ram, the system has "eaten" som of it.
So, I don't really see the complaint here?

The specs will never match the actual available memory since there is always space allocated to system whether it be ram or hdd

It's likely that the other half is being reserved as video memory.
Hi,
Thanks for reply. I've done a check on other tablets and they show the same lower memory than spec, except Asus 501 I think with ICS 4.
However, I think it should be specified total phisical memory and available memory.

Total available ram will be different and much less than the specs on any Android or mobile device. The system uses memory to load OS and for graphics.
Also the memory space will be less formatted and with all the system apps.
Just like a formatted hard drive or ssd is less than spec.
I do not know why people still complain about these things it is pretty ignorant. Have you ever owned a computer, tablet or cell phone before?

[Q] What is the actual memory of the Nexus 4?

Let's say I buy the 8GB Nexus 4, how much actual memory will I have? I know it's 8GB, but I'm wondering how much memory will the system files take.
on the 16gb version you have a 13gb of free space
Between 5 and 5.5gb of free space.
for 8 Gb I think around 5 free after a few apps
ohh that's quite small and plus its non expandable I'll have to wait for the 16gb, my first nexus device hopefully:fingers-crossed:

They're both coming out at the same time, so no waiting (unless you mean saving up the extra cash).

[Q] Convince me to buy the 16GB version

I see everyone saying they'll get the 16GB and even complaining that's not enough for them. Here's the thing. I'm a pretty tidy person when it comes to memory. I only keep in my phone the music that I know I'll be listening, not my whole collection (1GB max). When I take photos, I either delete them whenever I go across them or if I want to keep them I send them to my dropbox. Same for videos. I'm that kind of person that if he sees his gallery is becoming big, will save the few photos and videos that are really important and delete the other 200 without heasisating. I might play one of these big hd games, but I'll install it, play it and uninstall it afterwards. Last but not least, when it comes to movies or series that I plan to see on my phone, I download them on the PC, transfer them to the phone and delete them as soon as I've seen them.
So, right now I'm using a galaxy S with an external 8gb micro sd. That's a total of 16GB, and I'm using 6GB after some time of not cleaning. Normally it's 4-5GB.
My logic is, if I get the 8GB model and use an external pendrive and usb OTG for the movies/series, wouldn't it be enough? 50€ is a big deal for me
You've talked yourself into it and, going from what you've said, I'd agree with you. I'm gonna get the 16GB version cause I can not because I need to
When 8GB prevents you from doing something you really want to do, that $50 won't be as big a deal then. But seriously, I think that the 16GB model will even have better resell when it comes time to upgrade as most people prefer the larger storage as evidenced by this forum. Everybody's needs and wants are different, but as for me, I'm not even hesistating, it's 16GB for me.
Here is my breakdown:
Sygic GPS - 4.5GB storage space (maps stored locally on the device)
Pictures - around 3GB
Nandroid backups - I have usually 1-2 on my phone which usually means 1-2GB
This usually results in about 3-4GB of storage space to play with for me....
See, I do backups but I don't store them on my phone (sounds a bit stupid if you ask me), and I always use the maps navigation for gps. The reselling argument seems like a good point though.
The thing you need to keep in mind is that that 8 or 16GB is your total storage for the device. the 8GB Nexus 7 has 5.92GB of free space with no apps installed (except the system ones that come with it, obviously). And, if I remember correctly, the Galaxy S has 1GB of application storage in addition. With the Nexus 4, every application you install, even if it doesn't have to download additional files to the "sdcard", will be eating into that 5.92GB of storage you have.
^This! Will definitely get 16gb!!
Use the cloud and Google music. If your using Tmo get unlimited data and you will be fine streaming on hspa 42

Buy 8 GB version
And I was thinking that if I do not get memory sometimes can get a USB OTG and resolve. Rather than give so much money, better give one dollar for such a cable.
And who knows? Usually use the most how much memory you have. Those who will buy the 16 GB version I bet from her to him and USB OTG.
So there's no point to invest so for 8 GB.
Now Nexus 7 16GB is $ 200 .. perfect for everyone!
If you want more put something nice to sit wi-fi, 3G and 32 GB!
This about the real space available being around 5.7GB bugs me really hard now. Thinking that the amazing new phone I'm gonna get has less space than I'm using at this very moment doesn't sound right. Guess I'll go for the 16GB. Better regret something I did than something I didn't do.
I also think I can manage 8gb (not even coming close to using it up on my current phone, thouh lately I havent been using it that much as a smart phone), but I think I will get the 16gb. One of the main reason why is that I plan on having the phone for a while. I think this is a significant point, since while I'd currently be able to manage with the 6gb (don't count on more than 8) my usage might change (ex. I mihgt have some heavy games installed), and I'd probably want to have at least a gb free (so that'd leave 5 gb) for just in case situations, ex for making a nandroid, or shooting a 30-second-turned-15-minute HD video, or to try out a new very big game, or to download a new distro I want to try out and dd it to a usb (via otg, ofc) using my phone because I'm feeling lazy and dont want to get up and the usb and cable were right next to me (I am joking, but I have done this, though, on a tablet but similar situation).
This brings me to something else that might pop up in the future and that could use up space (though, if it does come, it may be possible to put it onto a usb, or they may immediately ship the software in a dock, psst, don't tell canonical, I want to profit of off this idea ); ubuntu for android (or something similar). Seeing as how canonical ported/is porting (native) ubuntu to the nexus 7 I think there is a chance they might port ubuntu for android to the nexus 4, especially if it sells a lot, which we all know it will. Oh, yeah. Don't mix up Ubuntu on the nexus 7 (if you already heard about it, or google it) with ubuntu for android (the former replaces android, the latter supplements it). While I'm not a fan of Ubuntu, and I probably wouldn't use it that much, the geeky coolness of it would definitely overrule the practical usage of space but thats just me, you might find it useful, or not have it at all.
just buy the 8gb version, that 299 price tag looks damn sexy
From my other post:
_guzzler_ said:
Today I did an excercise with my LG G2x to see if 8Gb will be enough:
Here is my current setup:
1) Internal storage: 1.48GB (788 MB used, it has OS and sys apps)
2) Internal SD card: 5.22GB (4GB used)
3) SDCard: 32GB (12GB used)
The goal of this experiment was to see if I can do without 32GB sd card as I will have about the same storage space as 8gb N4.
1.48 + 5.22 = 6.7Gb
And N4 has 7.45GB (Not 8GB, as 8GB is in decimal system which equates to 7.45GB)
8,000,000,000 / (1024 x 1024 x 1024) = 7.45Gb
Anyways, assuming N4 will be left with 5.92GB after OS and System apps (people from N7 8Gb have this much available).
I deleted all possible crap from the Internal SD card (#2) but the "Android" folder was huge, over a gb. Plus there were tons of other folders created by apps equating to 600 mb.
Mind you I dont have much useful stuff in my 32gb sd card. So I moved my camera pictures and music to Internal SD card and moved backups to 32gb SD card.
So now I could barely fit everything in my Internal SDcard: its 5.11GB full. With no crap: Only has Music, camera taken pics and 700mb of videos and ofcourse "data" from android and app data.
So if I add 788MB from the Internal storage (from #1) which has OS I will be at 5.8 GB
That leaves me with 100 mb in my brand new N4 for taking what 50 pics? Maybe? Or 25 Photosphers?
For those interested: I am running clean lean CM7 with 32 apps, 2 of which are games.

32 gb is a serious letdown

I was planning to buy the follow up nexus tablet for more than a year now, but the specs are such a let down! My biggest gripe is the max 32 gb storage. I'm OK with 16gb being base, I was never going to get 16 gb anyway. But 32 gb as maximum storage is just too little. I don't need an sd-card and sure I can put some stuff in the cloud, but I won't have wifi at all times! Maybe in the USA, but not where I live. (I don't even prefer cloud services for everything)
Even the nexus 6 has 64 gb of storage, and that's a phone which has a sim card and is almost always connected to the internet! Same with RAM. Why would you put less ram in a tablet and more in a smaller phone? Same with screen. Why use lower resolution on the n9 than on the n6? It makes no sense to me. If all can be crammed in a smaller package, then why not in a bigger package with a bigger battery.
Not to mention the 80$ for an increase in 16 gb.
32 gb....
Agreed, 32 GB max is too little. So is 2 GB for ram : what will be left for apps when the video memory will be deduced ?
But my thought on this is that Google wanted HTC to have a place under the sun : I wouldn't be surprised to find out before Xmas or shortly thereafter (Lollipop exclusivity for X months, maybe, just enough to let all other makers develop their own offering) that HTC has tablets ready just to address those weaknesses, and maybe add a micro-sd reader to the mix.
32gb is plenty for me. My current tablet only has 16gb and I don't even use 50% of the storage space.
Yeah the storage or lack thereof is probably the biggest letdown. Its sad to see Apple making Google look foolish in this regard. Can't even really say that cost is the reason with numerous 128GB consumer SSD options for ~$100. I really don't get it. The weird part when you think about it, is that the Nexus Player seems to be the best part of yesterday's announcement.

Totally agree except I thought nexus 6 and 9 both had same resolution?
And I think nexus 6 should have just got 2 GB of ram and made it cheaper.
And I wouldn't even hesitate to get the nexus 9 if the 32 GB was 399. But 480 is way too much for just increased storage. The storage increase probably doesn't cost them more than a few dollars. Now they're acting like Apple who charge 100 more. I used to like that they only charged 50 more
Sent from my LG-VS980
I wish the Nexus 9 had the following pricing options concerning storage: I may not necessarily need the 64GB version, but not providing it as an option stinks.
16 GB - $399
32 GB - $449
64 GB - $499
16GB storage shouldn't even be an option in this day and age. 32GB and above should be the norm. Was hoping Google would lead by example here instead of skimping out
Its not a bad idea to just get the 16gb version, then get a 64gb OTG flash drive for $40.

16 gb is still a viable option because there are so many people out there still using a fraction of the 16 gb provided to them.
More storage options other than 32 should be there, but hey, don't ya think htc/google thought about it?

Let me preface the obvious: this is all IMO. Having said that, I am constantly juggling games and keeping a watch on storage because 16GB just doesn't cut it. Considering that the most popular apps are games, and they've deprecated the usefulness of an external SD storage, they really should up that status quo. The N6 is a good step, the N9 with 16GB seems all the more bizarre in comparison.
If the Nexus 9 had a proper AMOLED screen and more storage it would be amazing but I'm extra glad I got a Tab S now. No point to AOSP if the hardware is lacking. The only reason to lust for N9 is K1 and that just isn't enough.

I'm more disappointed by the lack of wireless charging. I have it on my Nexus 7 and a Galaxy S4, and it's spoiled me. Feels like I'd be going backwards by not having it.
My two biggest gripes are wireless charging and the max 32gb. The only thing that makes this remotely palatable is the MicroSD slot but still a 128GB card is going to add $100 to the cost just to get this to the point where it's as functional as an iPad.
A little disappointed given the hype that they were intending to "compete" with the Apple in the high end arena.
The rest of the specs are enough though that I am probably a buyer...

What do you guys use memory for? I use the majority for my music, I travel with my entire library which is 40GB, but I'm planning to keep the hard copy on my S4 and just use the cloud for N9. Still probably going to get the 32GB N9 to fit more movies and tv shows.

New galaxy s10 plus help needed..

So I recently bought a new s10 plus but I made a post about it already but I haven't received the phone so I didn't know anything about it, today I received the phone and checked the ram and its only 8GB is this normal or is it suppose to be like 12 or 10 GB ram? (my phone is 12 GB ram and 1 TB variant). Also, is the screen supposed to flicker a lot when it opens up the camera because mine do?
Download Device Info HW from the play.store and check the specs
Anything more than 6 gigs of RAM on an Android phone is nothing but a marketing gimmick. The vast majority of people don't need more than 6 gigs of RAM on a laptop--according to Microsoft the minimum RAM requirement to run Windows 10 is 1GB which is stretching it but 6GB is more than enough to provide an extremely smooth experience for anyone who isn't a power user. With that in mind what practical purpose could having 8GB or 12GB of RAM on an Android phone possibly serve?
The expanding RAM numbers were a gimmick to convince the gullible that they needed to purchase expensive new phones--these are the same kind of people who don't question why they need a higher resolution display on a phone with a 10" display than on a 55" television screen.
Now that more RAM and higher resolution are the norm the latest gimmick is smartphone displays with higher refresh rates. Most people won't actually be able to see any difference but that hardly matters if it sells phones.

It is possible the wrong product got delivered to you, If your order correctly states that your device should be a 12 GB variant, you need to do a RMA.
Just to be sure update your device, for checking your RAM, go to settings -> Device Care -> Memory. At the top it should list, there should a be a bar and just under it your used memory/total memory.
For checking storage, go to settings -> Device Care -> Storage. At the top it should list, there should a be a bar and just under it your used storage/total storage.
If either of these don't match your order, please check with the seller, you should only get what you paid for.
As for the screen flicker, it really shouldn't happen, on my device opening the camera app is a rather smooth animation.

Hi sir, I wasn't very clear , sorry.. i currently have 8.5 GB ram available with no apps opened and seller confirmed it was original although I am still afraid coz I bought it not from official shop. In us dollar it's about 800 usd but in my country it's Rm 3000.. I am not sure its suppose to have 12 GB of ram if I have no apps opened or is it normal to have 8.5 gb of ram bcoz it might eat some ram for the system to run so I opened this thread.
Android is designed to fill most of the RAM at all times. In simple terms, empty RAM is wasted RAM.
As you start using apps, Android will keep your most commonly used apps in RAM, so that they launch quickly each timeyou open them or switch between them.
