Since the nexus 4 does not have an sd card, is there an adapter that connects to the phone and allows to read an sd card?
OTG cable

Does it really work? Where can i buy it?
Here is one. You would just need to plug in micro sd to usb adapter into it.
I bought the equivalent for my samsung galaxy 7 plus, and i was unable to read my card.
Do i need to install an app to make it work?

Here's a video of it working for your device, maybe you're missing something.
Thanks. It works with some sd card readers but not all.

I'm currently using an 8GB sdcard. I bought a 16GB and tried to transfer data. The first problem I have is that it takes forever to transfer it from my computer to the new card. I used a USB cord (new) and it still takes hours. Once it finally finished transferring I reboot and none of my data is there. What am I doing wrong?

Did you get the card from ebay? It's likely the card is a fake, or is just DOA.
of course ,i think the sd card is a fake,to change another sd card to try again

Download h2testw on windows and run it to check your SD cards validity

I bought the card from DailySteals.com. It looks like a legit card and my computer recognizes it.

Run that program above. Just because it looks good doesnt mean it is good, thats the whole reason these places make it look normal, so you think you are buying a real card.
And again, it could just be a bad card as well, contact the site and see about a return.
Will do.

There are several same memory sticks of high capacity that would fit nicely jsut under the nexus and provide much needed extra memory. wonder if such a thing is available or indeed possible?
You can use an OTG USB Adapter, device must mehr rooted, and use the tool"stick mount:
If device is unrooted You can use the "nexus Media importer" from market.
Cheers

Yes thanks I understand that but a memory stick with an micro interface wouldn't need the cable. know they don't exist but wondered if any technical issue that would rule them out.
I think, there might be a problem to harm your connector port if the USB stick isn t quite small, a flexible cable is the better choice in my opinion...
But your idea is interresting..

I thought this was interesting too. Until I realised you'd need an adaptor to plug it into a computer. So no real benefit ...LOL

I bought a 64GB Kingston usb drive and use 'Nexus Media Importer", works great with HD films and music etc. It's a shame it can't be used as an SD card enabling installation of apps etc to it. Oh well, maybe in the future or I finally root my Nexus 7.
Just got my nexus today.
This thing is fast
But I discovered that it lacks a micro SD slot.
I have tons of things on msd cards now.
So the debate is whether to switch to a tf700 which has decent resolution but at least the stock rom is ridiculously slow and laggy
Does anyone have any experience with both of these platforms?

Had both, kept the nexus 10. The tf 700 isn't even in the same league as it.
I uploaded all my music to Google play, if your concerned about the micro SD buy a $2 OTG cable from eBay and a $5 micro SD card reader from amazon (or one that does both) and install a ROM that supports OTG (most do).
I'm currently using my micro SD from my S3 this way.

Thanks I was wondering. If there was a way to use a card reader with this
Google probably wants people to use the "cloud"
But unless they want to roll out nationwide wifi that even works in the middle of nowhere and make da clowd unhackable, they really do most consumers a disservice by leaving off the sd card reader
Well regardless of my brief rant thanks again for mentioning the whole OTG thing

Hi,
What are the main options of extending N4 storage space? I can't use any internet so it has to be local.
I saw some wifi flash drives and there's the battery pack + usb stick (only way for portable usb otg?)
Are there other alternatives to this?
Thanks

Could always look into those wifi portable hard drives. They charge a premium over a regular external hard drive, but it appears to be an easy method to expand your storage.

OTG is not supported for the nexus 4 but there is a kernel that does allow it. Otherwise, it would have to be a WiFi hard drive

What about that thing, Nexus Media Importer? Does it not work with the Nexus 4?
BTW, regular file transfer, USB to your computer and copy from computer interface works, right?

Nexus media importer works by using an otg cable so no it won't work. Regular file transfer works just fine with a pc
Cheaper than a portable wifi drive, just use an old android phone with no sim and a massive micro sd card - use Fast File Transfer to exchange files this way and that. Bingo!

Or if all your media is music just get a cheap Creative MP3 player that accepts memory cards.
I bought a 16gb for my vibrant($40) so it has enough space for all my media needs.

You can use OTG with the N4,you just need a special OTG Y cable, a custom kernel, and an exterior power source. You can find the thread in the Original Development section

SD card reader not seeing my cards, I've bought two and not cheapos either. Is there something on my end or is the SD card reader borked?

Just to rule out defect of both SD Cards, try them either in a different phone or a PC.
Tried in PC and my g4 and both recognize them. Any idea how much this will cost to fix? Bought it off kijiji so don't no if moto will honor the warranty.

Hi!
I faced exactly the same issue as you had.
Have you resolve it?

Sd card reader is very fragile. Mine also damaged after i placed the card in the wrong direction. Im using an usb otg stick since its broken.
Yeah, I can confirm your information.
Brought my phone to a phone service. They had to resolder sd card reader as some connection points were broken.
The repair cost me about $80.
