[Q] [b]defy + stock rom - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to know is the motorola defy+ 2.3.6 gingerbread stock rom that comes in built from the factory very buggy in nature??
are other users facing problems too??
i am facing some problems..such as
1.Low RAM availability
2. Bluetooth transfer from pc or laptop can only send zip files and nothing else..in all my previous phones..samsung,nokia etc.there was never such a problem
3.The phone restarts automatically sometimes.
4. SOme applications crash on their own..such as swiftkey.
5: 2gb sd cards run good.while 8gb sd cards cause problems.
CAN someone please tell me if i install a CUSTOM CM 9 quarx rom..will i get a better overall experience of my phone??will these problems be gone??will it be better than the stock rom??I am a little worried about installing custom ROMS dats why wanna weigh the pro s and cons before gong for it..
please reply

I have a Defy+ with an 8 GB SD. My rom is CM10 2ndboot by Quarx. It has no problems. If your system is not stable you can set an higher Vsel in CPU settings in bootmenu (65 max). Every CPU is different.
Ps: I can only send zip files too via bluetooth, but you can use ES File manager to compress your files easily.
Sent from my flying overclocked Motorola Defy+ MB526 with CyanogenMod 10 and custom kernel using XDA app

With the stock file manager you can't send files with some extensions, like .apk etc...
Just install ES File Explorer or other similar and you will bypass this limitation.
I recommend you to try quarx's CM10 and maniac's CM7, and choose.
For me CM10 is fast at first and laggy after installing some apps.
So, I'm using CM7.
Good luck.

With the stock rom the phone lags a lot with a few apps installed . I'm considering switching to either CM7 or CM10.

[Q] Marketplace Bug

Is there any fix for that? There's so many builds out there with it. It lets you donwload it but not install it
Only one I didn't have it with was mdejay android builds. Is there anyway of fixing this cause all my favorite games wont install.
And yes I tried mount unmount
try this
try unmounting your SD Card then installing it.
Tried that too
On my HTC HD2 using tapatalk
so is it downloading and never installing or is it downloading and failing?
Downloads and fails to install. It happens on a few 2.2.1 stock builds and miui
On my HTC HD2 using tapatalk
You got me then, Most of the time I run into that issue I just download it a second time, which with the bigger files is a pain, and it works if i unmount the SD card.
I have been trying to get the christmas edition of angry birds and it doesnt even start for me. anything else works though for some reason!
If they're downloading but not installing, then have a look at this post...

If the files are there then at least you can manually install. It's obviously not a fix, but better than not being able to install anything!
Why not just go back to an MDJ build? I'm about to go back to one of his myself, now that I've heard he's got the camera working on a Desire HD build

Not a fan of sense builds. And theres certain bits and pieces of MIUI functionality that i cant live without and i tried the 4.0 Desire HD build and it drained my battery in under 5 hours
I know that the apks are there but it wont let me install them. After a while it says installation failed.
---------------------------------------
Either way changed to a MIUI Start Build yesterday and that supports external storage mode. It does have the bug too but at least it works when you unmount card. Only got 300 MB left now :S

[Q] So what is the best Option for booting on my nook?

I rooted my nook when I got it. I can read books, and can install games, apps etc. And it has the market.
Am I missing out on not loading something like the CM7 or some other ROM?
Will we see the nook running a fully working version of HC?
If you want to try CM7 (or anything else), make a bootable SDcard. There are instructions around, and although it might not perform as well as if it were internally installed, it's an instantly-reversible way to give ROMs a shot.
I like the dual boot myself.
Once you set up 1.2 the way you like it, I recommend setting up dual boot with stock on one partition and CM7 on the second. Then you can still use the stock reader and you can easily overclock and update CM7 while realizing the nooks true potential. Just move stock to the second partition and put Cm7 on the first boot position so that you can easily flash updates.
Dual Boot is an option. Have read of (rare) issues with futzing the partition table so, for test drive purposes, loading CM7 via SD as chinly suggested might be prudent at least at first....
Hey for any newbies out there when you perm. Root your phone and add a custom rom to it and later you feel like changeing your rom to a different one (like switching from gingervillan1.5 to cyanogenmod 7 witch I think is better) all you have to do is put the new rom file (probly zip) go in to recovery mode on your phone if you wanna back it up first the do a wipe to factory and wipe cahe the instal your new rom from your sd card reboot your phone and you should be golden!!
With cyanogenmod 7 you need something new called google addons that I don't have the link for @ the moment but you can find it on these blogs.
All you need to do is add the GAPPS file (witch is the google add ons in a zip) to your memory card and instal it from recovery mode..on my HTC G2 it took a while to get all the google apps on it but after it synced with my T-Mobile network and after a couple of reboots it started to work just fine
If anyone else has anything else to add feel free to for any newbies out there!!
All of these was based on my personal experience.

If you want BlueTooth, a 1.3 GHz overclock kernel, and very smooth video playback then you should give CM7 a try. If, however, you're using the nook for kids books and magazines, you're pretty much stuck using the stock B&N image... however you could always load up CM7 to an SD card and boot that to your hearts content.

Manually replace apps in NAND ROM?

Is it possible to manually replace some apps in a NAND ROM (in my case would be pongster's Hyperdroid from 31 May) before flashing the ROM, without affecting the normal function and stability of the phone? For example, I would like to replace the current internet browser app with Opera mini, etc.
yeah it should be fine, just make a backup of the stock zip incase it does cause problems but it never has for me.

[Q] Rooted Nook - Gingerbread or Froyo?

I have my nook rooted with Manual Nooter for 1.2. I saw a video of a Nook rooted to run Gingerbread. I know I'll lose all BN stock files if I do the Gingerbread OS. I don't care, as long as 1) I don't brick my nook and 2) I can still use it as an ereader. The GIngerbread nook looked much more like the piece of equipment I want to own.
Questions:
1) I see things about Nightlies and I don't know what those are....is it automatic or something I have to do?
2) Are there drawbacks to doing Gingerbread instead? And where do I find files and directions on how to root it to run Ginger?
3) Can I ever return my nook to stock if I go Ginger?
4) Do apps like Netflix and HBOGo run on Gingerbread? Does the market work better?
Any and all info on this would be great.

Nightlies are released nearly every day. They are ROMS that are constantly being updated and worked on, so they have many features that the stable CM ROM may not have.
There are no drawbacks to using Gingerbread over Froyo. Battery, performance, and other things were fixed in the update. And best of all, you lose nothing from it. It's only improvement. As for the files, I've only done the initial setup once, so a more experienced member should explain how to do so.
Just flash clockworkmod to an SD card using a program called windiskimager32 (or something like that), and download the latest nightly ROM of cyanogenmod (It's the gingerbread ROM you're talking about.) and drag it to the root of the flashed sd card. When you the card in the nook it will take you to a special recovery menu. Someone else will have to give further instructions, but it is fairly simple.
I believe you can return to stock, or just run Gingerbread from a SD card and leave the stock there, but I feel that running from eMMC is more stable.
And, there is no risk of bricking, since nook runs from an SD before it boots, so you could always flash another time.
In your case, OP, I would strongly suggest you booting CM7 off the uSD but first, get the Sandisk class 2 or class 4 uSD card (4GB or 8GB or 16GB will be fine)
Why would you suggest running off SD?
So basically, I use CWM to install an update? Are they required? Or just recommended?
If you're really looking at running CM7, and new to everything, running off SD card is the easiest way to get things running, while being the least complicated. That way you have something up and running while you become more familiar with the choices out there.
You don't have to update with every nightly (though lots of people update frequently). I typically run the stables, or at least the RC, as I use this occasionally for work and need something reliable.
Best thing you can do is read, read, and read some more. If you want to get hands on experience, run off SD until you are comfortable with the ins and outs of the NC.

Actually running from an SD card is more complex. The only benefit being that you don't have to wipe the stock rom from emmc.

I can't help you with HBO, but as for Netflix, as long as you're using the latest version it'll run on the Nook without modification. Older versions require you to modify the build.prop file... there's plenty of info around on how to do that, just google something like "netflix build.prop".
If Netflix is playing audio in fast forward... that means you need to change the build.prop.

A few questions

what's the consensus about stability, supprot development and battery life? It seems like CM7 offers the most battery life, CM10 is still unstable and CM9 has hardware acceleration but battery drain. I am on CM9 and wondering whether I should move forward to CM10 or just keep waiting for Qarx to release better releases?
Also is there a way, on my phone, to be notified of build releases?
What is the difference (I have a Bravo) between Kobe and Qarx builds? I have been using Kobe can I just flash to Qarx?
Also if I'm upgrading from CM9 to CM10 is there a way to keep my settings, files, homscreen icons and simply flash to CM10?
I am on the KOBE build, and wanted to know will I have things like HWA with the generic CM9 build...is there any advantage of the generic CM9 builds? Also will I be able to go to settings->:system updates and update using CM9's update service?
My battery life stinks on CM9!

Cm9 was alredy left in the past, there will be no more changes to fix battery drain, you should move alredy to cm10, the problem is present but it still has support from devs.
In the lastest build from quarx for bravo, bravo rom updater is working, but the app says defy rom updater and you just need to change some things inside config to make it work

For the rom updater do you have the thread for how to change the config file? I can't seem to find it on google.
Also no way to set the number of homescreens on cm10? Any other big changes they are looking forward to? That already seemed to slow down my bravo more than cm9.
Say I want to try to flash CM7 Kobe...could I simply do what I did for upgrading CM9->CM10..wipe the cache/davlik
So I'm on CM10 right now. Can I wipe the cache/davlik and flash the CM7 nightly/gapps?
There is no smartass profile on the bravo. Can I add it somehow?
I flashed CM10 fine with CWM. Only did a cache/davlik
Some people recommend a factory reset though? Why is that? I mean why go through the hassle of changing all your settings and reinstalling all your apps? I find it that I can't titanium restore my apps because the googleapps store from cm9 has a different account id than the current google apps installation on cm10.
Much slower startup too

The easiest way to check for updates is to check up on the forums where updates/changelogs are being posted.
For homescreens in cm10, I don't use trebuchet. Alternatively, apex launcher and nova allow you to change the number of homescreens.
Personally, I wipe cache/dalvik and wipe data each time I flash roms. It just seems safer that way, even though it's a pain to restore. Can you explain the app id problem you're talking about?
Governors are found in the development section of bravo forums, posted by skeevy420.

So I remember from stock->cm9 when I tried to restore my apps via titanium backup (and maybe in retrospect I erred when I tried to restore google store) there was some difference in the google store id off my old phone and my new phone's google store account on cm9...the difference in the store ids between my old apps and my new apps wouldn't allow me to authenticate all my applications. That and a lot of apps failed on startup because of it. Basically I dont think there is an easy way around reinstalling everything between cm9 and cm10

Hmmm. The only issue I've had is trying to restore system apps/data between android 2.3.x and 4.0.x/4.1.x. Never had problems with restoring various other apps. That being said, you shouldn't have an issue restoring any apps from ics to jb.
Don't restore the google play store. That's a system app and I think that's why you've had problems. Just flash gapps when you flash roms. You can then do batch restore in titanium and it will restore your missing apps/data. I think that should fix the problems you've been having.

Always factory reset when switching the rom base; eg. CM7 to CM9 or CM10. The reason is that the apps use the same filenames for sqlite databases, which don't have the same values from CM7\Miui\9\10\stock\MS2. That's where all the bugs come from when you don't wipe data\factory reset.
Google "fixed" Play to make it like that. If I remember correctly, there's an option in TB Pro that allows you to change the market id to your current rom's id. Under Batch\Market, if memory serves me well.
SmartassV2 is in the DX Gov pack. A trick is to just push it to /system/lib/modules/cpufreq_smartass.ko and overwrite the default smartass module with V2, since they use the same values to be tweaked you'll be able to configure V2 this way. This trick doesn't work with boostedass to overwrite boosted; only smartassV2 over smartass works.
Smartass sucks and is bugged by not using the 2nd vsel profile. Use SmartassV2 or Boosted. Oddly enough, I've found that if I use boosted\smartassV2 in combination with the vsel settings of [email protected]\[email protected]\[email protected] I get better battery life than when using [email protected]\[email protected]\[email protected] since 700mhz can handle more crap than 600 and doesn't need to jump up to vsel3 for greater processing power. Hell, I get 24 hrs easily like that and I use a Live Wallpaper (Galaxy Pack, its awesome so go buy it; Have Planet Pack from the same dev and its awesome as well).
You can speed up the startup by disabling the boot animation, removing unused system apps, using V6 properly, using F The Logs mod. Set the Governor to Ondemand\Performance\UserSpace (performance\userspace force it to use vsel3 exclusively) in the bootmenu for booting up and use something like NoFrills\CM Performance Menu\SetCpu to change to boosted\smartassV2 once you're fully booted and in the system. Another good tweak is to modify the sio scheduler scripts. I've done plenty of posts on how I mod bootmenu scripts to fix sio and to make it work better. The sio fix will give you much faster read times for the system memory (twice as fast for some apps, literally twice).
You can use the /system/bootmenu/scripts/overclock.sh and /system/bootmenu/config/overclock.conf from my latest CM7 Kang to apply the sio tweak. Just replace them before you flash the rom or adb push with 0777 permissions.

Most devices have 4+ vsel slots. Moto phones are screwed by the bootloader\limited Moto Kernel features.
It should be. The thing with the bravo (when tweaking governors) is trying to find the magic values that use vsel2 more than vsel3 and still provide a smooth ui. The reason that a 700mhz vsel2 works good is that the Bravo comes with a stock vsel3 of 800mhz. CM7\9 work\use resources much better than our stock Froyo making that 700mhz perform like 800mhz on a stock rom.
