Hello all, Windows Mobile 7 is announced to be available this year. It seems that it will be a lot more "finger friendly". The Touch HD would fit it very well.
In fact, I'm currently a Kaiser owner, and I planned to buy a Touch HD but I'm a bit disapointed (as always with HTC !!!) about its graphical performances.
Touch HD owners still need to convert video files for the Touch HD to read them at a good speed ... A shame !!!! I had an Axim x50v 4 years ago which was able to read any VGA DivX without any convertion and it was really fast, no lags.
So I can deal with the bad video performances (I already do with my Kaiser ...) but I need a major change in the general usage of the device compared to my Kaiser.
That's why I would be glad to see Windows Mobile 7 announced for the Touch HD, it may be the thing which would decide me to buy a Touch HD.
Does anyone know if HTC plan to upgrade the Touch HD with Windows Mobile 7 when it will be available ?
Thanks !
Windows 7?
Where? I thought was delayed for 2010 and that they will release soon windows 6.5... Did I miss something
In fact Windows Mobile 8 was delayed for 2010 (and maybe later !). What I read so far is that Windows Mobile 7 should be available in the middle of 2009.
EDIT : New news -> you're right, wm 6.5 announced to come before 7 ... 7 delayed for 2010 ...

what you read is incorrect. WM7 is for 2010, Q4 of 2009 at the EARLIEST. and to your original question. WM7 may require a different set of hardware to be completely finger friendly, ie no more resistive touch screen. but that's not to say people here can't hack it and port it to a legacy product (ie. touch HD) by the time WM7 comes out
About the date for WM 7, take a look at my EDIT section in my previous post ...
I've already noticed it changed, but thanks anyway ...
About the hardware, I'm not sure it may need a different hardware because it is said that Microsoft developped an application which use the camera as a G-Sensor ... So they may do their best for this O.S. to be compatible with old style hardware ...
So now the question is : will HTC offer a WM 6.5 upgrade for the Touch HD ... Not sure cause it may be there too late ...
Hm, i think the 6.5 will be published in Spring/Summer 09, so it could be possible.

Fact:
He totaly made that up, there have been some renderings of what the G2 MAY look like and many people took it upon themselves to photoshop The Beast running the Android OS. Don't get your hopes up.
(My) Sepculation:
You'll probably see the G1 come out with 5 more colors, and 10 more OTAs before you ever find out what a G2 looks like.
Sources:

Not to mention that HTC specifically said that they did not manufacture the Black Stone with a radio module supporting the US 3G frequencies. So I doubt T-Mobile would Market any device going foward as running on G2/Edge
I hope you find this helpful (And sorry to take the air out your balloon)

Hmm. Camera tracking applications kill the battery _very_ quickly and obviously don't work in bad light conditions or against blank surfaces with no pattern.
The HD has a g-sensor anyway, so that shouldn't be an issue.
i've also read on numerous websites that theres the chance that t-mobile may be running android on touch HD.
also the HD is definitly coming out on t-mobile in the next 2 months

the time stamp sais your last edit was after my post. but regarding the hardware difference: microsoft never specifies the HW requirement to end customers because we don't get to purchase the OS. they do specify to the manufactures of the phones. it's the same reason why your PC hardware requirement changes for Windows 2000 and Windows Vista. I'm sure you can some what run Vista on a machine built for Win 2K, but your experience will be limited. So I was just saying that some hackers here can port the WM7 to Touch HD, even though Touch HD is not designated to run WM7.
Requirement wise, I am _speculating_ that it will need a better CPU/graphics chip, amongst other things. the current Qualcomm chip 's graphic capability just plain sucks, the CPU power also isn't the best. Horse power by horsepower, a Qualcomm 500 MHz is much slower than a Marvel/Intel PXA 500 Mhz. I believe WM7 will have more graphics requirement: here's my logic:
- Up till WM6.1 (possibly 6.5), the max resolution supported is 800x480 (which is ok), but he color depth is only 65000, which is low. Iphone supports 262000, i'm sure MS will be going after at least that.
- ever since phones/PDA moved form QVGA to VGA and WVGA, the graphics suffered, and understandbly so. though not microsoft's fault directly. people started saying "my WM phone/PDA is slow" and put the blame on MS. So MS will be clearing their name and restricting manufactures from putting their OS on a non-suitable device
so the above two points just to show you in the graphics department there may be a HW requirement. can you run it on a phone that doesn't fit the requirement? suuuuure, just that the experience won't be as good.
and finally, the news yesterday confirmed my suspicious is that HTC just dumped Qualcomm (not 100% dump though) as the sole CPU/chip provider due to their performance. Given that a product stays in incubation (for prototyping QA, testing, beta, etc etc) for 6 to 8 month before it hits the market. I believe HTC is prototyping the new devices with WM6.5 and perhaps even WM7, and found the performance with Qualcomm chip lacking. hence hardware requirement.

I don't mean to be rude, but what part don't you understand that the the Touch HD has hardware limitation not allowing it to take advantage of US 3G frequencies
If you read my previous post you'll see an official announcement from HTC themselves supporting my comment.
The HTC will not see the light of day in the United States, In the US there are 2 GSM Carriers ATT and T-Mobile
ATT won't relesase because it directly competes (and probably breeches) their contract with Apple
And, when was the last time you seen T-Mobile release a beefy smartphone, the smartest phone they have is the Wing, and that's a joke in terms of Harware.

What makes you think he is talking about the US market? There are other countries out there you know
I was told by around 5 people from T-Mob UK retentions that it was in the testing phase, and they could offer it to me around March. This could possibly have been conjecture to try and get me to stay, but if you look at the link below, you will see a trend.

HAHA oh man I get the same thing all the time!
The annoying thing is it's surprisingly hard to say "HTC Touch HD" properly coherantly without sounding weird due to the cacophony of hard syllables!
Something interesting to note about WiMo 6.5 and the Touch HD is in reference to Pocket Internet Explorer 6. Microsoft have stated that their new mobile browser won't be released for use on any device due to hardware limitations of current devices - but there HAS been a ROM released by a microsoft developer for the Touch HD ONLY that DOES include the new Pocket IE...
My theory is that 6.5 will be held by microsoft for use on higher spec future handsets only, but the Touch HD will be allowed a possibly semi-official update. (maybe in the guise of a ROM by a microsoft developer like PIE6)
Something else to bear in mind, the Hermes was in mid life cycle when WiMo6 was released and HTC duly released a free upgrade from the pre-existing version 5 so there's a possibility they might do something similar for the HD.
All speculation and hope of course...
Here are some images of what WM7 might look like. Check out the Word 2007 picture. It looks like it has a lot of menu options.

The Windows Mobile platform is light years behind the iPhone for the application market. Yeh, there's loads around that do some things, but in terms of the micro-applications model that Apple has, WinMo is just nowhere near.
It won't be like that forever, but MSFT is playing catchup. Personally I think the release of WinMo 7 will be the big change that swings a bit of momentum. I still think MSFT need to release a dev environment better than the native (C++) and make it free.
I'm sure there are many more folk on here more qualified to talk such things than I am.

Why do you even use the Marketplace? There are tens of thousands of applications for Windows Mobile available! Windows Mobile isn't that far behind at all.
The appliacations just aren't in the Marketplace, but that's huge advantage over the iPhone: With Windows Mobile, you don't have to rely on a company to allow applications, developers can distribute their applications through whatever channel they want.
Don't bother buying anything from the Marketplace.
Instead, have a look at this forum, handango.com, mobihand.com, freewareppc.com and (for games) gameloft.com.
The best Windows Mobile application repository is unfortunately not legal, so I can't mention it, but the sites I mentioned already give you a glance at what is available for Windows Mobile.

How many apps do you think were available for the Iphone when it had just been released ?? Probably not much either. So, how can you expect that there's thousands of apps in the Windows store, when it's only just 'open for business'?
As already stated before, there's lot's of places where Windows Mobile Apps are available, many for free!
So stop complaining about the amount of apps in the Windows Store, and try searching the Web.....I hear Google is pretty good doing that for you.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. I don't use the marketplace as my main source of apps, and I've had an on off relationship with WinMo for quite some time and have used handango extensively in the past.
One of my biggest gripes over the App Store from Apple was its monopoly over what could be or not be in there. MSFT's model appears a little different as they appear to be more concerned about compliance rather than commercial conflicts - which is good.
But honestly, if you want WinMo to compete in the iPhone and Droid space, which I'm sure MSFT want, then their needs to be a marketplace for micro applications that cost reasonable amounts. And the apps need to be slick looking and not your usual .Net CF form bores.
I believe it will come, but it'll take some time.

That is an awesome idea. I'm surprised Handango don't have an installable marketplace app. I'd bet money on them having one in the near future though.
The app titled: "Scriptures (beta)" shows up in my G1's market, but does not in my Nexus' market.
Any ideas what's going on?
Did you do any of the following to your Nexus One:
1. Unlocked bootloader?
2. Enable root?
If so, "Scriptures (Beta)" is a *protected* Android application and will not show up.
If not, then it's a OS "support" version issue.

My new N1 is not unlocked/rooted, but my old G1 *is*. But it's the G1 that sees the app fine, and the new N1 does not.
Must be an OS support issue.
I downloaded the app directly from the author's website and it works fine.

Yup. If that's the case, the author needs to fix it and update it on Android Market.

application compatibility
Your phone is listed as a 2.1 device in the market, and if the apps don't specify compatibility (they introduced a compatibility layer in 2.0.1) then they won't show up since they won't work anyway (well, they might, but the general assumption is that they won't)
I guess that explains why AppManager Pro isn't showing up for me on my N1. Annoying. I love that app.
This explains why, when people were talking about Nexus One Torch and I decided to see what it was, my G1 couldn't see it. Now I have a Nexus I can (and it's good )
There are some errors I think, because I want Bonsai Blast which I think I remember was demo'd by the Bonsai Blast google developer for either droid or 2.1. I think it was a demo for the new resolution, so I know it can't be that, and I don't think a google Dev would forget to update his extremely popular app.
Let the application owners know!
When the moto droid came out, I emailed a few developers and some even came out with an update the very next day!

If we take the conservative assumption that it must be listed on the Google's own market place before it would work on Nexus, how many applications are available at the moment? Is there good statistics on that yet?
Perhaps most of them would work on Nexus one anyway? Love to hear from people who have tried using the applications written for the older OS version and see if they are generally still compatible. It's hard to imagine how a version upgrade would upset the older applications too much.

Really the only set-back is the resolution. All of the hardware has exponentially increased. All of Androids apps are written in java, which is pretty standard and should have no problem running on all android platforms.
The only time it should be disallowed would be if a game were to be written for the N1 specs (which cannot run on the G1), and therefore not shown in the market for the G1.
I suppose developers don't want their games to look too pixelated on the N1 until they update the resolutions. It's a waiting game now, since there are absolutely NO games available unless you want to play solitaire.
Or you could email the devs to death requesting an update...

Android has been through 6 MAJOR versions ... if they can't fix the basics, maybe they shouldn't be competing in the space.
Or maybe Google should stop that dumbass policy of only releasing BETA software. Others seem to be able to release software that works fine, admittedly with less features. Get the basics right and then add features one by one and make sure they all work before releasing them.

I just converted to Windows Phone 8. I'm rocking a T-Mobile Nokia Lumina 925. I have experience using both Android and iOS. For some reason the simplicity of WP8 has made me "content" with using it.
A few things I just wanted to note. Perhaps someone here can answer the questions if he or she has it.
1. SMS Transfers (While I was able to successfully move my SMS messages using the Nokia Transfer App on my Nexus 5, iOS is a different Story. When I run it against iOS is recognizes the texts but says there is 0, when there a lot more then that.
2. USB Streaming in the car. (I have a USB port in my 2010 Chevy Cruze. While I was able to stream anything from Pandora to Tune IN off my iPhone, the Nexus 5 couldn't do this. I had to resort to using the AUX port, but the sound quality was lousy. I wanted to know if there was an app or something that may allow me to use my USB port on my WP8 phone
3. YouTube. (I had no clue why Google has been not friendly in allowing a native YouTube app on WP8. I do find alternatives in Windows Marketplace, but I would like a suggestion of one that is the best one to use)
4. Apple TV (Now I know folks will probably laugh their ass off, but is there an app that would let me stream content to it. If not is there a device I can purchase that can?)
5. WP8 Info (Unfortunately unlike Android, there isn't much of anything on XDA that talks about WP8. Are their known websites {don't freaking tell me to google it} that has more info on the OS.
6. Google Now (again another laugh your ass moment, but I really liked those darn cards. The one in particular was giving me a travel time from my home to work and vise versa. Is there an app that can do that in the WP8 Store?)
7.Battery Life (I'm amazed at the battery life of this thing. It's lasted longer then iOS and Android but I miss not being able to see how much percent I have left. Again the WP8 store had a dime of dozen apps for this, but i'm looking for a good recommendation on one that I can use.)
8. OWA. (There was an app I was using with the Nexus 5 called 'FASTOWA'. It let me logon to my corp Exchange account using OWA where I can quickly look at messages. The company doesn't allow ActiveSync so this work around was pretty much what I used. Is their an app alternative for this on WP8)
Again Thanks in Advance for posting some answers. I know there will be some smirk comments about this, but those who do happen to come upon this thread and give me real answers, I'll really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Angel

1.- No idea about SMS transfers. Maybe iOS has its own storage system for storing sms.
2.- What do you mean by USB Streaming? Maybe you're confused, as the iPhone dock also has an analog line-out and can stream audio out of it. In Windows Phone, as well as in Android, you don't have that dock port as it's an Apple proprietary port. You're stuck with line out, which is not bad at all if you have a good cable and set it correctly.
3.- Currently, the best YouTube app for Windows Phone is MetroTube (which costs US$ 0.99). The other good app is YouTube HD (which is free). Both of them gives you great functionality and many options.
4.- Apple TV uses their own proprietary streaming system called AirPlay, while Nokia and every other phone manufacturer uses DLNA (which is a standard by the way). If you want your Apple TV to stream content from your phone (whether it's Windows Phone, Android, Blackberry, whatever), you need to download an app to your Apple TV device to work as a DLNA device. Once you've done that, you can easily stream content from your Nokia phone using Nokia Play To. (which uses DLNA)
5.- WPCentral is a good site with info. XDA forums are good as well.
6.- No idea as I have never used Google now myself. Sorry.
7.- You can use This or This app to see the phone battery percentage. Windows Phone 8.1 will show percentage on the notifications bar.
8.- There should be no problem at all configuring your enterprise account as "Exchange server" on the accounts settings.
Hope this post was helpful.
Any time anybody requests "{don't freaking tell me to google it}" I assume they're an <REDACTED> who thinks their time is more valuable that that of the forum members who they expect to answer their easily-looked-up facts for them, and also so unintelligent that they think they'll save time writing a post rather than just looking it up themselves. These are behaviors I actively dis-incentivize on the forum, for example by not answering even if I know the answer, in the hopes that you or somebody else reading this post in the future will learn.
By the way, the #1 rule of this forum is "Search before posting".
Now, if you meant to say "I looked for a good site but there are so many; which one do you all prefer?", or maybe "I searched but all I got were support and specifications sites, and I want discussion and announcements" or something else of that variety, you should have said that. Give people an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge or Google-fu *without* sounding like an entitled <REDACTED> who can't be bothered to forum rules, and many of them will do so.
Oh, and it's "Lumia". I have no idea why people keep adding an extra 'n' to the name. It's a slightly weird letter combo in English, but not *that* weird, and it just looks wrong written with six letters instead of five so you don't even have the excuse that it "looks about right; I don't remember the real spelling".
The individual who replied before hand, GDTD, is possible one of the few remaining developers that try and support the platform out in the open for no other benefit then to help and contribute to the community. Given the amount of inane questions that are asked on here through no other reason then laziness, much of which is directed at GDTD, its not hard to see why devs an long term contributors get a little peeved when asked questions that can easily be found out, the internet is full of just about anything you can think of, google even helps you find most of it, but xda is primary source of that information, not a regurgitator of it

Cortana can give you the same thing as Google now. I like Cortana a lot better.
One site you can go to for more info on Windows Phone , is Windows Phone Central. http://www.wpcentral.com/
Hope I'm not in trouble for giving a link.

Why would breaking Forum rule number 11 get you in to trouble?
As a general rule of thumb, if another site has information that is relevant to your post then post that information HERE then supply a link to the person who deserves credit.
Telling people to just go somewhere else to contribute is not good practice for XDA to continue to thrive.
I'm really sorry . I never meant to break a rule. he was asking if there was somewhere he could get more info on Windows Phone and I gave him the link to where there is nothing but info on Windows Phone. I was trying to be helful and meant nothing against this great forum.
Thanks so much for reminding me of the rule as I confess I never read that rule.
"don't freaking tell me to google it" is disrespectful on the face of it, in addition to bordering on an outright violation of the forum rules. We are *not* here to be your personal interface to publicly available information. You blew "Respect me and I'll respect you" with your very first post [EDIT: in this thread]; I don't know why you expected to be respected after insulting everybody who reads the forum with that (confrontational!) bit of childish petulance.
FYI, I'm about 75% sure I could get you banned for immature piece of ASCII "art" - the mods *might* just edit it out with a pointed message to you instead - but I haven't bothered reporting you *yet* simply because my skin is thick enough to put up with some random person on the Internet who has an entitlement complex; I see them every day. You just happened to win the lottery on which one I responded to on that particular day. You seem to be an otherwise decent person, aside from a thin skin and the aforementioned childishness. "Making fun of" indeed! Guess what: I made fun of President GW Bush for his absurd mispronunciations on national TV. Act the fool where people can see you and they'll treat you like one. But pointing out that you misspelled a 5-letter word deserved a "lol oops" response, at most. Grow up, kid.
