[Q] How to change user agent string in metro IE10 - Windows 8 General

In Windows RT, it would be nice to be able to change the user agent string for the metro version of IE10 so that websites show their more touch-friendly versions. Changing the user agent using F12 Developer Tools for desktop IE10 does not seem to have an affect on the metro version, so I am assuming that it would need to be a registry tweak.
Has anyone done this? Thanks!

Moved to the Windows 8 General section.

Just as an FYI, the current user agent string is
Code:
Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 10.0; Windows NT 6.2; Trident/6.0; Touch)
I think that it would be most beneficial to emulate an iPad, which as a user string
Code:
Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; U; CPU OS 3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/531.21.10 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.4 Mobile/7B334b Safari/531.21.10
Would anyone see any unforeseen consequences of doing something like this?

No unique User Agent String in Opera

Hi Guys,
For development purposes I need the Opera Browser to send an unique User Agent String to the webserver (this is to distinguish between SonyEricsson X1 and Touch HD)
Based on the article
http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/opera-mobile-9-5-the-developer-angle/
The Touch HD is sending:
Opera/9.5 (Microsoft Windows; PPC; Opera Mobi/2682; U; de)
In this article there is a passage which says:
Note that the PPC part of the string is read from the registry on the phone; on some phones it may be modified to something different by the handset manufacturer, e.g. HTC PPC.
Click to collapse
... so it would be easy to create a registry file to install on all handsets to replace "PPC" with "TouchHD PPC" ...
My problem is that I don't find the entry containing PPC in the registry with Total Commander.
please help me

Change user agent string

Hi everyone,
I like to watch "Swisscom Mobile TV" (a swiss service) wich is only accessable for branded phones (like the htc magic). The nexus one isn't branded phone.
So i read on a forum that i have to change my default_user_agent in the "com.android.browser_preferences.xml" to the HTC magic one to make it work. But it doesn't work.
And finally, i read that i have to modify the browsersettings.java to make the change effective (http://github.com/Wysie/android_pac.../src/com/android/browser/BrowserSettings.java)
And i really don't know how to do this, if someone can help me?
And sorry for my bad english
Enter the URL "about:debug" into the browser, confirm the address, nothing happens. now go into the browser preferences, scroll waaaay down. some debug settings showed up. one allows you to change the user agent
ps: search function

What happened to Opera and desktop webpages?

I'm using opera 9.7.
I used to put this code under preference in (opera:config > User prefs > UAProf URL) to get full desktop experience.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3
Then under (opera:config > User prefs > UAProf URL Enabled), I uncheck the box.
Now, even if I put in that code, somehow after, it reverts back to some htcmms.com...blahblahblah...
How do i stop this? it never did this before.
In addition, by unchecking the box, webpages like CNN.com and NYT.com will load up desktop versions instead of mobile ones.
Never mind, I forgot that it should be under "Custom User-Agent"
I suggest everyone put that code in that box to get full desktop experience.

Facebook Mobile

Hello everyone, I wonder if there is another version of facebook. But I'm pretty sure he is not in.
I think everyone agrees with me that this version is totally horrible. Why Facebook is for Windows phone so poorly made? Compared to that of android or iphone! I am ready to create a group for those who are prepared to 0.5 dollars per person for the dévellopers trying to create a true version of facebook for windows phone like android and iphone! Personally i am ready to invest in another version of facebook
What do you think? Thank you everyone, I hope I was clear
Open Opera --> www.facebook.com
Why complain about a stupid app that is totally unnecessary?

that's your opinion, this post is dedicated to people who often uses facebook, and for these people, use opera + facebook.com is not terrible
there is a never version of the facebook app that is available, for free, from ms marketplace. It's versioned 1.2 as opposed to v1.1 that comes preinstalled but i do agree with the other posters, Use opera, but you may need to change the user agent string in the newer versions to get the full site instead of the mobile one (i certainly had to)

Then try touch.facebook.com or m.facebook.com
There is a facebook for everyone.
And yes, I use it quite often and, as you see, the facebook app misses some important options.
So simply add a shortcut in the Internet tab and everything is fine.

To change the Custom User Agent field in Opera's config.
Open Opera and goto the address bar
Enter opera:config (make sure there is no http etc)
Scroll down to User Prefs and open the section
Scroll down to Custom User Agent
Remove everything in the box and enter the following string:
HTC_HD2_T8585 Opera/9.7 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en)
Then scroll to the bottom of the list and there will be a save button, click it.
That works for me, I think the important part for whether its mobile or desktop version is in the brackets...
Another vote for touch.facebook.com

Thanks for the confirmation. My instinct told me to go back and check the "Leo Hints and Tips" thread to change it back from the Touch HD settings. So I was right. Funnily enough, the status box on the full FB website now works again!
Thanks.

Aye, +1 for touch.facebook.com
Far, far better than the standard app. Just like the Android version I'm used to.

Full web navigation browser

Hey, there's any way to get full web navigation? like in a desktop? there are a lot of pages that i can't see as a pc and I have to enter with anonymouse surf. I've tried to change skyfire or dolphin options but it keeps happening
The primary suggestion here will be to change your user-agent string. In fact there are several ways to do this, but it is not a complete solution. For example here is the user-agent string you would see right now from me if you were indeed a web server and I requested a page from my browser:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.13 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/9.0.597.67 Safari/534.13
As you can see it includes a lot of information. It has what browser I am using, but it contains more too. Dolphin, Firefox Mobile ( was Fennec), and Skyfire only let you change the browser portion, and not the operating system. So it may look like you are using a desktop browser, but the actual operating system will still be apparent.
For a full breakdown of your user-agent string visit http://www.useragentstring.com/index.php
Try this on both your desktop and your phone and compare.
For example my mobile user-agent string is:
Mozilla/5.0 (Android; Linux armv7l; rv:2.0b8) Gecko/20101221 Firefox/4.0b8 Fennec/4.0b3
For some (VERY AMUSING) history read here: http://webaim.org/blog/user-agent-string-history/
Ok i've used about:useragent command in phone browser.. but now i don't know what to do hehe
Well, like I said. I think you can only change the browser portion and not the operating system. So it is not going to work if you want to actually see full desktop versions of the pages.
It is up to the web developer to create different pages based on who/what is visiting. Not everyone does, but the ones that go through the trouble of making separate pages for mobile would rather have it filter based on a small handful of operating systems then tracking every possible browser and version. So basically if your user-agent says you are using a mobile OS like iOS, Android, WinMo, WebOS, Symbian, Blackberry, etc . . . then you will be fed a mobile page.
