Open bootloader? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know if this phone will have an open bootloader? cant live without cm and aokp!

It would be a massive diversion from the Nexus name if it didn't. 99.9% sure it will

I'm going 99.999999999% that it's unlocked.

This. Easily unlockable bootloader is one of the things Nexus device must have, otherwise Google would not allow it to carry Nexus brand.

Yep, I'm sure it will be.

It better be.
Hit me up on Gtalk if u need help @musclehead84

it will be unlockable
by this command
fastboot oem unlock
& lockable like this
fastboot oem lock

Hey guys

I'm K7C and I come from the doubleshot threads , I'm going to be getting a nexus 4 and wanted to know if I should get it. I like diff UI's and since this is the Nexus it has a lot of options. What would you rate your nexus with and without root. Thanks

Perfect description! Simply one cannot own a nexus and enjoy its full potential without root.
Not to mention the fact that the N4 is one of the easiest smartphones to unlock & root. Just don't use a toolkit, and enjoy learning about Android.

What's wrong with using the toolkit? If I can't use the tk then I will need someone to walk me through the process over the phone.

you learn nothing. so when you run into the issue, youre screwed since you dont know the basics. anyways, doing it the right way is just as easy as using a toolkit. all you need to do(in a nutshell) is fastboot oem unlock, flash a recovery via fastboot, flash either the su binaries or a custom rom in your new recovery, then reboot. nothing difficult. but learning to fastboot and to use the recovery is essential.

[Q] Can someone explain to me...

Can someone explain to me how one would even go about cracking the bootloader? I've heard it would require a leak of the keys from Verizon, but what would someone even do with those keys?

Well ya, but how would they unlock it? I'm assuming it's different from my front door.
I'm not exactly sure how it works but I know most phones the command fastboot oem unlock would unlock the bootloader where as on our phones it will not.

oh srry i thought u answered your own question.. if they had the keys theyd be able to sign a custom built kernel/bootloader to make the phone accept it as official then wed be able to have custom recovery.. other than that you would need to ask someone more talented than i.. if youre not sure then most likely you wouldnt understand if someone told you details of how it could be done anyways

Unlocked bootloader? I'm excited again

I can confirm that the unlock is real.
It should be noted that users should NEVER EVER get or take another update from Amazon. This usually involves an upgrade to the "aboot" partition which will IMMEDIATELY RELOCK the device.
Once the device is unlocked several key changes take place in the functionality:
- The device no longer checks for signatures on recovery or boot images. This would allow for custom recovery and the potential for full AOSP ROMs.
- If powered on with both volume buttons pressed, fastboot mode is started for easier recovery of the device.
The unlock, may only apply to certain versions of the OS (*.3.2.1 etc). Some tests for downgrading and then running the exploit need to happen over the weekend and I'm sure that's why you don't see this released yet.
Also, there is probably going to be a fee to unlock, that's a new business model for devs to still make some money off unlock exploits while keeping that exploit from being patched by the OEMs.

This is old news . Did you happen to look at the date of this quote ? I believe the majority of us have been waiting for this release around six weeks or something like that
Sorry. I just came across it.. did not venture in hdx land for a bit. Well it seems also there are legal issues as well but if it's actually in existence wick seems to be case it can somehow slip out as all information does eventually

I will gladly pay a nominal fee.
FireOS is pretty crappy once you actually start using the device with google play store... Apps (mostly games) constantly crash due to memory issues that i know are because of the OS. How can my HTC One M7 have ~ 900MB ram available at idle when the HDX has ~300 at idle... No phone services are even running? Oh wait, all the crap amazon services are and are so tied in with the OS they are basically impossible to stop/remove without bricking the device...
I can't wait for un-locked boot loader and some real android.... :victory:

I am very surprised that these 2 devices are not unlocked by now and more popular. They are cheap and very powerful for what you get.
I hope I can get my unit working soon.

I'm 99% positive it won't work. I'm pretty sure Amazon's engineers removed that command manually.

I wonder until now, is there any case that after several years (e.g. 3-4yrs) since the day a device was release, it has not been unlocked?

What isn't clear?
You need a computer.
You need fastboot/adb on the computer.
You need to download the latest images.
Since you are not flashing a custom recovery the BL does not need to be unlocked.
Follow the instructions.

BL needs to be unlocked in order to flash images. None of this matters anyway. This guy is a lost cause.

Good. Now unplug it from your comp and don't do anymore stuff until you learn what you're doing. You have a really nice phone. Is it not worth a few days of reading and learning to ensure that you do things properly and also know how to recover?

That was the worst thing you could have done. If/when you have issues with your phone you're going to have no idea how to fix it, and then will come yet another thread from you asking for help. If you can't take the time to learn the basics that I've outlined in my guide then you honestly shouldn't be messing with your phone in the first place. This is exactly why you're having so much trouble, because you've jumped in head first without bothering to know what you're doing.
You say it isn't clear enough? That's as clear as it gets, you just haven't taken the time to learn, the problem isn't with my guide, it's your own impatience and unwillingness to actually educate yourself with this stuff. You need the knowledge and experience you gain from learning how to use fastboot if you're going to modify your phone, do yourself a favour and get to reading.
And stop making multiple threads for the same issue:
