I have flashed many Roms, but lately I am running out of room on my internal storage. I wipe everything 3 times and storage says I have only 4 GB left. What am I doing wrong? I recently install JB and a game I ha enter played in a while. I opened the game and it wanted to continue play from 8 weeks ago. Any help would be great.

It could be your internal storage is just filled with game data and other files that don't normally get deleted when doing Rom wipes.
If you "really" want to clean your system of off the old stuff, then when you boot into your CWM Recovery, select "Backup and Restore". Then select "Toggle Data Media".
When you do your wipes and formats, it will "REALLY" wipe all your data from your tab. Fotos, Game data, downloaded files, etc.
Then install your rom.

thanks for your reply. it would appear that I have no option for "toggle data media " on my device in the section you designated. I will keep looking.
How many nanoid backup do you have? Each time you do a backup from cwm it creates a huge file , 400+ mb. Delete some of them with a file manager like ROM manager or ES file explorer.

I have one backup. I moved everything in titanium backup to my external storage and deleted the one backup. I went from 4GB to 7GB.

As always, there is more information than what was told....
As with CWM, you have to be running the newer versions. Next time, might want to give a little more info. TB will by default, for those that still use it, save all data to internal SD.

yea, the last time i used TB according to the back up was almost a year ago. I always deleted it when it came with a new rom. I had no idea the file was still on my storage much less a backed up rom. but thanks for the assist anyways.
In TB you can always choose to set ext sd as target for backup. Well thats what i do. Knowing me I'm probably wrong lol

I wonder if anyone know... What happens when let's say i have 9gb of data on my s2 and i want to backup it with nandroid? It should be possible to do this to sd card, but what if some apps are on phone and some on sd card? How backup then?
If i upgrade to a newer custom built rom, i them try to backup, wouldn't it restore the older backed up firmware? Or just apps and settings, but not rom itself?

Nandroid backups are an image of
/system
/data
/dbdata
(on CF-Root, not sure about original CWM) it also includes .android_secure, which is SD-stored apps.
I don't understand what you are asking.
If there is not enough space you obviously have to delete something.
BTW: data-partition is around 2,1GB and system-partition 500MB, so there is no way a single backup can use 9GB

Question is if I have my phone filled with games, different apps which make let's say 10 gb (not that much counting in that one game may be up to 1 gb), so how do i backup this? To SD card?
What if I have 20gb of data , 10 of which are on phone, 10 on sd card, in this case i wouldn't be able to backup everything?
One more technical question about rom upgrades. Currently i installed Villain Rom and have a backup made with nandroid. When i upgrade to a newer Villain Rom 1.5 or whatever comes out and I do the restore, i suppose it will restore 1.4 rom version with it's all apps and settings?
In this case, how do i backup only accounts, contacts, sms , apps, photogallery but not rom itself?

Regarding restoring only apps/accounts/etc but not the rom iteself, within cwm, in backup and restore, chhoose advanced restore and the restore data.
Im not certain whether it restores gallery or sms.i sync my photos via dropbox, and backup my texts seperately.

It's fairly simple:
Nandroid for your ROM and user data that is on the PHONE and /data partition
For the /sdcard and /sdcard/external_sd, that's up to you to sort out... Perhaps back up the contents by connecting to your PC? Then copy the contents of the SD? That way you have your nandroid backup stored on the computer just in case
so then in case something goes wrong, i restore with nandroid and manually copy contents from PC and ALL of my phone's data (software, contacts, gallery etc) will be there?

Well, now you have a phone that doesn´t hide everything from the user it shouldn´t be that hard to make a backup.
There are basically 4 interesting partitions on the phone:
system (about 500MB) - This holds more or less the whole Firmware. While it is technically just a partition on the flash-memory, it is used like a ROM in normal usage, so the only situation where something will be written on this partition is a firmware-upgrade.
data (about 2GB)- This partition holds all user-installed apps and their settings.
sdcard (about 12GB) - This is not really a sdcard. Instead it is a part of the internal memory, you can use it for example for media, documents, images etc., whatever you like. This partition can be accessed on your computer as a regular USB-storage, and you can do a backup of it the way you like, either simply copying everything, or using a backup-solution of your choice.
external_sd (optional) - This is the micro-sd-card you can put in your phone. Obviously you can use it for anything you like. This partition is also accessible as a USB-storage or you can use a simple USB card-reader to access it on your computer.
Usually all your applications and settings will be stored in the /data/-partition.
If you choose the Move-to-SD option in the application-manager, some parts of the application will be moved to the (internal) /sdcard/-partition, but all the user-data/settings still remain on the /data/-partition.
So the maximum space you need to backup all your settings and apps is under 3GB.
Now to the possibilities of a backup, and the importance of the different things.
A nandroid-backup will basically make an image of the /system/ and /data/ partitions (also a bit more, but that´s not really important).
Usually it will use the /sdcard/-partition, which actually is still in your phone.
If you restore a Nandroid-Backup your System will be in the exact state before the backup, including all applications with their settings (which also means contacts, e-mails, sms etc).
Obviously everything that has changed after the backup will be lost.
A restore well also restore the complete firmware from the backup.
A backup from Nandroid can only be restored on the same phone, with the same partitions.
The second possibility to make backups would be TitaniumBackup.
This program will store all your installed applications and their data.
Default it will store it on the internal /sdcard/, but it is probably more useful to change the path to the external_sd.
Everything in Android is an application, so this will also save all your settings.
During a restore TitaniumBackup simply reinstalls your applications and then restores their settings.
TitaniumBackup can restore your applications with any Firmware, and in theory even on other phones (it may not work with special System-apps but it surely works with most "user-apps")
So Clockworkmod is great if you want to play around with different firmwares, especially Custom ROMs.
You can install different ROMs, make a backup and very easy and fast switch between them.
For a "regular" backup TitaniumBackup is maybe the better choice, it can backup all your settings and applications and for example if a Firmware-update goes wrong simply restore anything.
There is no real need to backup the /system/-partition anyway, you can simply download the Firmware and flash it, there is no user-data on this partition.
sdcard and external_sd usually only contains media, which you probably have somewhere on your PC anyway, so there is no real need for a backup, maybe for the pictures and videos you make with your phone, but again you should copy this on your PC regularly anyway. And if you want you can easily copy everything on it as well.

Apps can´t be several GB in size on Android. Normally you have only around 2GB for Apps, if you use the App2SD-feature it can be expanded a bit.
If applications need a lot of data, for example like navigation-programs or games, they will download this on the first start and store this on the /sdcard/-partition.
As I said, you can access this easily like a removable drive and copy everything you like.
It isn´t also that important to make a backup of this, as it can be downloaded again anytime, and if something goes wrong it usually will mess up your system and don´t influence the data-partition anyway (well as long as you don´t repartition the whole memory)

No, they are stored in /data
You back that up using nandroid, then you restore it via nandroid and they will be there. What you see on your PC via USB is the "internal SD".

No, you see the (internal) /sdcard/ partition and (if present) the /external_sd/ (the MicroSD-card you have in your phone)
To simply backup your applications, the easiest way is TitaniumBackup.
This will store the .apk and settings for each up in a folder of your choice (on /sdcard/ or /external_sd/, as you usually have no direct access to the other partitions)
You can copy this folder on your PC, or even in the TitaniumBackup-folder of another phone and use it there.
There are several advantages using TitaniumBackup to save your Apps over CWM-recovery. You can use it with the enabled phone for example, and also just restore individual Apps, if you like.
Some roms require a full wipe/factory reset before installing. Of course that will delete all apps including the one that I bought. Do I need to buy them again?
Also, will the 'titanium backup' backups the destop settings (i.e., the app shortcuts created on main screen)?

Some launchers let you backup icon placements and such on the home screen. Also, as long as you use the same Google account you originally bought stuff from Google Play with on your new ROM or any other devic, you can download it again for free. Also Titanium Backup is an incredible app that will backup apps settings as well, so if you are thinking of getting it, go for the paid version, it's worth a least 4 times as much as it costs.

Thanks for the reply. I bought TitaniumB already. But, if I do a full wipe, I actually also delete the Titanium app and the file it backuped, didn't I?

Not if you leave the "sdcard" partition alone. You can wipe data and keep that data (which has your TB info) intact. Same goes for any backups/nandroids you performed with TWRP or CWR.

It might be a stupid question, but What is TB short for? Also, the Nexus 7 only has one internal 'sdcard', by partition, did you mean that I could set many partitions like what we do under windows (i.e., C: , D: , E: ) ?
TB is titanium backup but I would just use es file explorer or something similar to back up the apps to the sd card

You can but that's a totally different question/thread/answer. LOL What you want is to just flash a new rom after a wipe and to restore all your apps. It is ok to wipe your device, just do NOT wipe the internal SD card. That will wipe the rom you want to flash and other goodies. Another tip is to create an update.zip of your titanium backup program so that when you first flash your ROM, you can flash the update.zip right after. In Titanium backup, hit menu-"create update.zip". This will place the update.zip (titanium backup program) on your internal SDcard so you can flash it later.
Please delete the update.zip after you have your device up and running to avoid any confusions down the road. You can create the titanium backup "zip" file at any time and takes seconds to do. GL

Nope the rom's data partition is seperate from the sdcard partition. A regular wipe of the data, cache, dalvic cache, and system doesn't delete the storage (sdcard) partition, they're kept seperate for that reason among others.
You have to actually tell it to wipe the sdcard partition in order to wipe it. Also, note that in recovery, wiping the data and cache partition is sometimes called "factory reset". I know in TWRP recovery it is, not sure about clockwork. If you know you're in recovery, the factory reset is perfectly safe, it only wipes data and cache. It's completely seperate from similar options that are in the rom (in settings) or in the factory bootloader.
When you see us referring to "Make sure you wipe completely" it's probably confusing, but we aren't referring to the sdcard and external storage. We are just referring to what's necessary for a proper rom install, which is data, system, dalvic cache, and cache.

TBU: 383MB
As you can imagine, that is a BIG chunk out of my 6GB total!
I have flashed lots of ROMs in the last couple of weeks but I have now settled on one. AFAIK all I need to keep is the current bakup in TWRP in case anything happens.
I would be glad for some advice as to what I can safely delete. I don't want to make a mistake as my system is running brilliantly right now.

As you already said, you should keep the TWRP backup as a safety net... The dated folders in the Clockworkmod can be deleted if you don't need to use them any more. Just leave the main folder but delete the sub folders.
TBU backups are just your apps + data... if you don't need data restored (since you probably have them in your TWRP backup) you can delete the contents there as well.

I agree with cvcduty, but I just wondered if there was a reason you use both TWRP and Clockworkmod, especially on an 8GB N7 with limited space. I've always just used CWM, so I was curious

Well, to be honest the answer is a bit silly: I am not aware of having used CWM, I didn't even know I had it!
Can I uninstall it altogether? And if so, how?
In CWM, there is a folder called Blobs with 1.78GB worth of folders. Is it safe to delete it?
If you don't use cwm then yes you can delete it.
I removed mine aswell as I have a nandroid backup on my PC which I can adb push if worst comes

The clockworkmod APK
and
The clockworkmod RECOVERY
both use that same folder. Every time you flash a cyanogen Rom it had the apk installed by default. So that's where it's coming from.
In the folder back up the Nandroid folder or the one with data system recovery files (140-250mb) to your computer and then delete the whole dang folder if you do not use clockwork recovery.
As for titanium you can use the cloud storage feature and save another 500mb

I'm having a heck of a time with the internal storage on my S4. What I have done so far: Rooted -> Flashed with Xousos v1.0 (no problem) -> Backup to SD card with CWM -> Flashed with Xousos v2.0 -> Flashed Theme Reverepats ICS (MF9) -> Flashed ComaDose = No Space
I moved all my apps to my SD card and even deleted dropbox and all documents sync to free up space. Before I do a rom flash I clear data/cache/davilik cache and format system. I know the S4's 16GB is really an 8GB - but to only have a few hundred megs left after a fresh flash and TiBackup restore of a handful of apps is not right.
I figure I must have copies of the previous installs somewhere on the internal storage, I just dont know where to look. So if anyone could point me in the right direction as to what directories I can delete or any steps to help free up some space, I would really appreciate it.

Check the "MISC" folder and check to see what are the folders that take up the most space. I have a feeling you are going to have a nandroid on there that is taking up about 3-4gbs

I apologize for the dumb question in advance, but do you know the location of that folder?
I went to storage/emulated/0 in root explorer and the file structure looks the same as the phone folder explorer but no large files - screen shot attached (largest file first)

This will be my last resort, I just did the wipe/flash and would like to try and solution the problem before I do the wipe
Get disk usage app and poke around the filesystem. It will graphically show you what folders are storing large amounts of data. It will be a lot faster using that tool with finding large files than going through each folder with a file browser app.

In the storage screen (from your original post, where it showed the breakdown), just tap on miscellaneous and it should show you the folders that make up that 7.52GB

Thanks, this is a handy little app, especially with root access.
I attached a screen shot - it looks like the system data folder is dominating the space - is it possible there is still an old rom on there or possible a backup (like was mentioned earlier) and if so, how do I get to it?

That was my last screen shot - when I tap miscellaneous the biggest folder in there is 3.69 MB - which is why I am so confused

Wiping the internal sdcard did the trick. Reloading everything was not what I wanted but it did solve the problem

Mine started giving me the low storage space warning once the MF9 update downloaded. I had to wipe the internal sd card completely. What a PITA.

that makes a lot of sense because mine did the same and the update notification wouldnt go away until I flashed the update. I guess next time I need to format the internal sd before I flash
So I've been looking around and trying to fix this problem myself but I've had no luck. I've almost completely run out of internal memory. I'm not sure if its a memory leak or what but its starting to affect my phone's ability to update apps. Currently, of the 16gb I have <800mb left but it used to be as low as ~50mb.
At first I tried just moving every app I could to my SD card, and I already transfer and delete every picture and video I have on my phone asap. So afterwards I wiped cache a few times. Finally I completely wiped and reset my phone to stock and still only freed up 1gb of space. I then flashed the negalite ROM. With this new rom and the core set of apps I use, all moved to the SD card, I have 829mb of internal memory free.
I understand that I really only have 8gb to play around with, but this screencap shows that I have 7gb being taken up by miscellaneous files, yet when I check what's in there it does not add up to 7gb (nothing below those files goes above a few hundred kb tops). Is there any way to free up more memory without deleting literally every app I have? I don't think I even have that many frivolous apps.
So to summarize, my phone is a sprint s4 SPH-L720 with 4.4.2 running the Negalite rom, with only 800mb/16gb internal free, trying to free up more. Not sure if its a memory leak or what.
Do you have any nandroid backups with either philz,cwm, or twrp recovery? If so those are about 3-5gbs each.

Using a file manager that can show hidden files (ES can) look around and see if you see any folder named something like lost.dir or lost+found it might be that some deleted items were sent or left their instead of going into oblivion. I have had it occur before, after deleting the contents it freed up several 100s of MB to GB of memory.
It's possible it could be this.

Hm I just went through the CWM folder and deleted some old backups supposedly but those were only like 9mb big... The mysteries keep mounting!
And catfood I tried looking through the files with file explorer but I couldn't find a lost or a variation of it.

Do you have any cloud apps like Google Drive or something of the like? Try checking sync options, or the programs settings, something might be downloading data to cache offline.
Backup your data!
Install philz_touch_6.19.6-jflte recovery
then go to Mount and Storage Menu
do a format for{ system, cache, date and(( /data and /data/media ( /sdcard)))

Do I have to install that one or can I just use CWM?

I don't know but I used that recovery and it works for me.
