Cool design idea for Windows 8 Desktop - Windows 8 General

I love Windows 8 but switching from the wonderful Modern UI Start screen to the standard Desktop - well... how can I put it... there is no consistency. So I decided to make my desktop wallpaper be 'connected' to my Start screen, to keep it all consistent.
Basically, when I enter my desktop, what appears to happen is all my tiles vanish and I am just left just with the background, profile pic/name (top right) and the word 'Start' changes to the word 'Desktop'.
Start Screen:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Desktop Screen:
This how to recreate it:
1) Either pinch to zoom out to see all your tiles smaller, or if you are using a mouse click on the small minus sign in the lower right corner.
See image below:
2) Press the "PrtScn" button (Print Screen) on you keyboard to take a screen capture of this view. The screen is automatically copied to your clipboard.
3) Open up Photoshop or any other image manipulation software. Create a new file. It should automatically have the correct resolution based on your clipboard. Paste the screen shot into your canvas.
4) Using the Rectangular Marquee Tool, draw a rectangle around the tiles.
5) Using the Eyedropper tool, get the same colour as your background and use a large brush to erase all the tiles.
See image below:
6) Create a new layer and type the word "Desktop" in white colour using Segoe UI font (Semilight) with a font size of 17pt or whatever size is closer to your Start font. This font is very close to the 'Start' font. Move the word Desktop so it exactly covers the word Start and then erase the word Start on the layer below.
7) Flatten image and save to a folder.
8) Apply new wallpaper by right clicking your desktop and choosing Personalize.
Hope you like it!

This is great. Thanks.

Excellent tip. I am so doing this. I hate seeing the old desktop.

I also did this on my Surface. Had to do a screen shot of the Surface and redo the mod as different resolution to my desktop.

Internal Use Spy???what is this?!!

I was messing with my JAM the other day, and I tried to find a hidden screen in the today menu, just like the one you get when you press the action button in the middle of the directional pad + touch the clock icon on the today screen in the top right corner....
I know this is the RUN command just like the one in other windows OS...
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
so I tried pressing the action button for a second + pressing something else..
and when I tried the space between the start icon and Sync( or G or E.. etc) icon... I get a message as in the screenshot...
does anybody know what is this? or what is it for??
BTW.. it appears that it doesn't mater whether I press Yes or NO... nothing seems to happen, and no files or what ever is stored in the root or in My Documents..
Excellent find, very useful for developers!

wow, in substance u can retrieve infos on the current window in the screen like size name etc (but u can do it only if there is enough space between the title bar and the notification icons) even if I'm not a programmer, I guess it's very useful for others.. cool find :wink:

Nice of MS to leave a built in functionality of the Spy++ utility.
Regarding the yes / no it doesn't create a file. If the window is a child (any window but the today screen) it shows the info on its parent.
For those who are not developers little explanation:
hwnd - window handle that the OS uses to identify and control windows
style / ex - windows style (border / ok button etc.) and extended style, determines how window looks and behaves.
Class - type of window (like button)
Window - total window size.
client - "client area" size. Internal par of the window not counting border scroll bars, menus etc.
Owner - parent window (the window that contains this one).
thank you levenum for your helpful explanation..
tested working in Wizard not only in Today screen but also while playing games
I do not want to be the one to spoil the moment but you can get that same info (and more) just by using a TaskManager with Windows Management feature :roll:

Hi,
I self made this with a little time with photoshop. I think, it could be easier, but I found this way and everything looks good
1) take HTCPhoneLockOn.bmp from your PPC Windows directory and copy to your local disk
2) take one screenshot with shield on and one screenshot with shield off (I used phone calling to activate this)
3) import bot screenshots into one photoshop image (layers
4) you need place HTCPhoneLockOn.bmp on screenshot_1 to correct placing the shield
5) copy center button for sliding on upper layer
6) hide layer with shieldOn
7) make corrections on layer with shield, I used alphablending
8) copy shield together with blended layer into new image with correct sizing like HTCPhoneLockOn.bmp
9) replace \windows\htcphonelockon.bmp file on your PPC, soft reset
I have black dialer on my Diamond, so I made it for black dialer.
Screenshot and HTCPhoneLockOn.bmp are attached.
Enjoy!

Is possible create a shield for incoming call with only one botton, for example is useful speaker botton.
In the car, when arrive the call, and the phone is plugged, we can push speaker button without stopped the car or unplug the phone

Flash Pimp Clock

Loved the original idea from here:

Its basicly a different visual clock, to read the hours see the left vertical columns and for the minutes see the right 5-rows columns.
The PDF on the site above explains it better...
To use:
---------
- 5 colors to choose from, just press the bottom bar to change colors.
- If you prefer a 12-hour clock, simply click the left numbers after 13h.
- Exit with enter (keypad) or by pressing the top-right area.
- See the "normal" digital clock and date by pressing anywhere else on the screen.
Notes:
-------
- Needs FLASH 7, if it doesnt exit properly, you dont have it.
- Attached the CAB, already with the WM6.5 icon on install.
- Also added a separated swf file, to see it run on your NOKIA, PC or Throttle Launcher..
Enjoy.
Nice idea
Love it! thanks!
it would be cool if it can be a screensaver.
thanks twolf!
WQVGA issue omnia
just wondering if there's a way to make the excess screen on my omnia to default BLACK- then your app would be awesome
maybe even add function buttons - there's some promising update potential
awesome clock - would it be possible to simulate the look of a recessed L.E.D.?
looks good on my armband at the CLUB!!!
Great...very cool with the color options!
Sorry, the software I use for the EXE only allows VGA/QVGA, he doesnt even allow any extra options for the size or screen color.
Use flash pimp clock

Yes, yes my first app for the htc diamond.
it`s fantastic........... I`m cry
Standalone app?
Just wondering... what is the program you are using for these standalone apps? I could probably use the same thing to make my own FlashGadgets play as standalones, which would make them work across a broader series of device platforms. Please check out my thread, and tell me what you think. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630985

i9000 wallpaper

hi guys,
i'm using a 800x480 picture for my wallpaper but when i select it to be my wallpaper, i'm given a orange box to select the area I want. But isn't the resolution correct?
Yes, but you have to disable the "wallpaper scrolling" feature to have a static wallpaper. Not sure where you find this in the touchwiz settings as I'm using launcher pro, but should be an option somewhere.
No, the correct resolution for wallpapers is 960x800 pixels.

The wallpaper should be 960x800 to be the correct size (to allow for the scrolling to new screens).
When you apply the wallpaper, you need to hold your finger on the edge of the box and drag so it enlarges.

curious why you say it has to be that large to allow scrolling
mine's 640 X 480 and it's still 3 times larger than the orange box (before i resize it up) and fills all 7 home screens and scrolls across em fine
resolution is actually great -
i'm trying to learn something so the question w background is for real, not trying to contest
the first picture is what i uploaded to the phone, the white box in the 2nd picture is what displays as the wall paper

To properly apply 800 x 1200 wallpapers:
Download images from 1200 folder to SD card, doesn't matter where. (Ignore ._files, it's because I use OS X)
Unmount SD card safely (You better not just unplug the thing, or I swear I'll find you)
Use the Android aspplications such as Astro or Root Explorer to navigate your Nook to the folder in which you placed the wallpapers
View image in the default "Android" image viewer and select the "Set as" button on the top
Drag vertical arrows until the entire 800x1200 image is selected and confirm the selection
Done!
