Having already written this post out a few times in lengthy detail only to have it lost thanks to my idiocy of hitting the refresh key and my battery dying amongst other things, I am going to keep this simple by asking whether or not I should purchase a 16 GB Nexus 10 tablet. I constantly fluctuate between rooms in my house, from the garden to the bedrooms and the living room, and carrying a laptop around with a rather pitiful battery life is hardly the most practical solution. Since I already own a Galaxy Note with a 5.3" display, the idea of a 7" tablet didn't appeal to me in the slightest. However, a 10" slate offers some potential. Should I buy one? I have a few issues regarding storage though. I am right in reading that it doesn't have an SD card slot, right?
Seems like it doesn't. Storage could be a problem - I almost used the whole 16GB on a Transformer (having all my files on an SD card! so only on apps!). What do you want to use it for?

I don't have a great quantity of apps on my phone, since I have no need for most of them on a phone. For example, I don't see a need nor have a desire to do Photoshop, Blogger and many more on a 5" display when I have a much larger display with a keyboard sitting somewhere within my house. However, if I purchased a tablet, I would want to do these things on it. I have compiled a list, since you asked, as to what I plan on using a tablet for.
Web browsing.
Blogger.
Angry Birds.
Other games.
Music.
Movies & TV.
Ebooks.
Taking photos.
Skype.
Instant messaging.
Calenders.
Notes.
Homework.
I have approximately 10 GB of music and movies/television alone. I worry that 16 GB won't be enough, but stretching to 32 GB is going to be even more difficult (it will take me awhile to raise funds for 16 GB model as is) and even then it isn't an abundance of storage.
In reality only you can answer that question.
I never buy anything just because others say I should.

That is understandable, but I would like to know some other opinions on the device and also potential solutions to the storage problem. The Nexus devices are all really amazing, yet I do feel the need to have more storage options!
I currently have the Transformer Prime and I too am possibly looking into purchasing the Nexus 10. Reasoning behind that is I feel that the Nexus line up will have a huge community (as seen in the Nexus 7). Its not that im unhappy with my transformer, I just like to have the next big thing. Only problems I have with the Nexus 10 is the overall look. It looks thick and cheap but the specs blow it out of the water. I would say if you have yet to purchase a tablet then wait for the 10, if you already have one like me, theres not much I can say.

Oh come on, 8.9mm isnt thick! I think it looks awesome. I already have the N7 but buying the N10 is very tempting because of the resolution.
I wouldn't jump so quickly on the n10 band wagon. Just look at what happened to the n7 the 8g got discontinued and now there is a 32g for 249. N10 might dump the 16 for a 32 to a 64g option. Also after 4.2 is loaded on the n10 your only going to have 13gigs on the 16g n10 and that is not enough.

You know, that's a great point. I've been excited about the Nexus 10, but I have the 7 (16GB) and I'm feeling a little burned. Google didn't wake up and say "let's release a 32GB at the same price point to screw over all the current 16GB owners!" but it does feel that way. So, I am not upset with Google, but I still can't help but feel that I'd have been better off waiting. I'm going to wait it out on the Nexus 10 for a while. Thanks for the point about this, you saved me lots of $

I don't get this. I have the 16GB GNex and 16GB GTab and the only reason I've run out of space on either is when I forget to delete previous nandroid backups before copying over videos for a long trip. I mainly use my Tab for ebooks, or videos while travelling. When I'm at home I stream over WiFi off my NAS.
That said, I'll be buying the 32GB version of the N10 just for the 1080 goodness.

The only people that are really going to have storage issues are gamers, music buffs and people that want more than 5 movies on their device. Would you go out and buy a new laptop with only 16GB of storage? Lol of course not. My laptop has 750GB. I'm just saying that these new 10inch tablets are more of a laptop replacement and 16 to 32GB is not enough storage at least for me. If I didn't buy a n10 I would be shopping for a new laptop but I'm not even considering it. I don't want my data fragmented some here some there. I want the same content I have on my laptop on my tablet.
I'm constantly having to erase content to add new content on my 16GB n7.

I was going to buy the Nexus 10, until I realized two things:
1- The aspect ratio is 16:9... that sucks.. Even the Nook HD+ (9inch) is wider (because it has 3:2 aspect ratio)
2- It appears that there is no optically-bonded display.. so it will be useless outdoors..

I thought that too, but it is confirmed to be 16:9..
Here is the proof:
http://www.google.com/nexus/10/
Look at the specs in "Movies"
EDIT: I dont know what to believe.. I measured some pictures of N10, and it gives me an exact 1.6 aspect ratio (16:10).. But the specs in google's web are clear about 16:9.

I'm with you, it looks like they brought in Fisher Price as consultants when you compare it to a Transformer. I was going to buy the 7, but the wife wisely told me to consider a 10". After that decision was made is was on to the Transformer when rumor had this thing pushed to next year, with consideration for the surface. Even though it doesn't look awesome, I'll be buying.

You can keep your anti-wifi, shiny metal housings. The Nexus 10 design is pure, practical comfort. The rubberized backing is much more comfortable to hold than a cold metal backing. The increased friction from the rubber will make it easier to one-hand and the rounded design will feel natural in your hands. This is one thing I don't like about my Transformer TF101, the 90 degree metal edges on the sides, you know, where you hold it 99% of the time. Cuts in to my hands after a few mins.
"the tablet has a rubberized sort of feel that's actually quite pleasant to the touch."

Keep in mind I'm not a Starbucks go-er so envy-of-others isn't on my checklist before buying a tablet.

If you were sure that the ipad was not the choice, the Nexus 10 would be what you want.
Storage Solution
If you're worried about storage space, why not consider using Google Drive as a solution? You get 5GB free and you can purchase up to 16TB. Their large size plan for consumers is 100GB for $5 a month ($60 a year, not super costly considering phone bill prices these days). You can upload anything you want and access it across all your devices. For example, I have uploaded pictures, video files (mkv and they play brilliantly on my Nexus 7), and I regularly use drive to share PDFs for pen and paper role playing games with my friends so we can collaborate on the game outside of actually playing it (not to mention easy access to the material whilst gaming). Also, I'll note that I haven't even had to buy more storage space yet, I'm still only using a gig or two of my 5 free gigs.

If I wanted to stream stuff, I'd stream it from my home PC rather than share with google and pay a subscription price for the storage I need.
I'm just going to either connect my phone to it with a USB otg cable and share its 64GB microsdxc card most of the time for media and save the internal storage for apps where I'm still worried I'll need more than 16Gb. A lot of people forget that that includes the OS files and that formatted it will be less.

The major selling point for the Kindle Fire is of course the price. Especially in this forum where all we really care about is the price and hardware so we can put custom ROMs on later.
So as i see it, they both have similar processors, the same amount of RAM and cost the same but the Ideapad has a bunch of other stuff- dual cameras, gps, bluetooth and a microsd slot.
so assuming both devices get rooted why would we choose the Fire over the Ideapad?
cant tell if the A1 has an IPS screen
specs show that the A1 has TI OMAP 3622, which isnt listed on the ti omap page, but the nc is 3621, so guessing its the same chip, @ 1ghz rather than 800mhz.
the A1 also has a smaller battery 3550 mAh vs 4000 mAh (11% smaller or about 7hrs, if NC has 8hr baseline)
so, guessing that if the A1 does have an IPS screen, it would have same performance to an O/C nook color, but with 1hr less battery life. with the NC2 coming out very soon, for the A1 to complete, guessing that sony will have to drop the price for the 16gb model to $200 to be competitive.
I have been wondering myself how this is all going to fall out.
Supposedly the ideapad may be a minimum 250$ for those of us living in the states with no SD card option.
While the kindle fire is nice.. 16 GB can feel small on a phone.. so I don't know if it is practical for a tab at all without SD card expansion.
If the roms maintain the silk browser and amazon storage.. it may be worth it.
The downsides to the Kindle I see are as follows.
1. lack of buttons.
2. any mods done may be more permanent since it is a more modified version of android.. So once it is rooted/romed.. I worry it may not be able to go "back to stock" which is a bit more damaging.
The only advantage to the kindle I see is the dual core processor..which by itself is sex/tempting..
But, honestly I don't see any other advantage unless the only reason you want a tablet is as an ereader in the first place (which is true of many people)
It does have an IPS display and from what i understand there are is an 8gb version for $200 that wont ship in the US and a 16gb for $250 that will (i didnt see anything about no sd slot in the 8gb version)
Maybe the release of the kindle fire will push lenovo to sell the $200 8gb version in the us.
actually the lack of button seems like a big deal. i mean, we can root it but how functional is android without the home and menu buttons?
IPS display, gorilla glass & price are the only positives.
Oh, one more, it will drive the price down on every other tablet except for the ipad.
ok to lack of hardware buttons Cm7 for the book puts an on screen section on the status bar for menu, back and search.

The A1 has a single core CPU vs the dual core on the Kindle Fire. That's pretty big for me. I already have a Nook color and it can get a bit sluggish sometimes, even o/c to 1200.
I also have an NC, and it runs fine for what I use it for. I don't use widgets/apps that run continuously. It can play MKV/AVI movies OK at SD resolution, using QQPlayer.
The big question is how good is the KF as a modded device, and lack of an SD slot is a major bummer--not just for ease of modding, but also for storage expansion. 8GB (actually, 5GB) isn't a lot. The unrooted KF can get away with it, since it uses Amazon's cloud services. CM7 can't.
But the Lenovo A1 isn't in the equation, as you can already get the same (except cams & GPS) from the existing NC right now for $150. And the NC is already a CM-supported device, so you don't have to wait around a couple of months for it to get dev support. As for the missing features--cams, GPS, HDMI-out--you have to ask yourself what's important for your use. Those aren't important to me.
I'm looking forward to the NC2, which is rumored to have the same 4430 SoC. Hopefully, B&N will match the KF's $199 price, but if the NC2 is as moddable as the NC, at $250 it would still be a good deal for the SD slot.
I agree, NC is probably still a good deal than the A1. I had a nook color before, I liked it for a while but was disappointed that it didn't have a mic. and the speed was a little bit slow as well, even after OC. then, I sold it and got a 7 inch galaxy tab. I loved the tab a lot, it only costed me 260 (woot deal) and it came with everything and 99% of games and app worked fine after gingerbread upgrade. Then I was stupid enough to trade the tab with the 10.1 tab... the 10.1 tab was good and much faster than the 7 tab but too big and half of my apps didn't work.
Anyways, i am also looking for a 7-8 inches tablet.. I want a dual-core, gps, mic, sd-card, at least 8 hours battery life and under $350. mic and gps are must since I have many apps and games for my sons that they need mic and gps..
I am waiting for the galaxy 7+.. Any other idea?
Eh.. Maybe I will regret it later..
I really like the idea of "cheap, no frills" tabs.
I mean in my phone I get the idea.. GPS is nice since if I get lost odds are I will have my phone.
Bluetooth is nice since I'm using my phone anyway.
In a tablet device.. if I can get it cheaper without frills.. then so be it.
I'm really going back and forth both ways on the kindle fire. I may pick up one if I decide to hop on a tablet yet.
It really depends on whether or not the A1 comes out and what kind of reviews it gets.
I guess what we expect the tablet to do also plays into it a lot though. I mean, I just want a web browsing/manga reading device
I've been looking at these too. The IdeaPad is supposed to have a GPS, which is really nice. I'm not sure what the screen is going to be like.
Anyway, I think the Fire is going to appeal to the common man, but the IdeaPad is going to appeal more to the hacker. I'm shopping for my wife, so I'm suck in the middle.
Either way, I welcome the device. Android doesn't really have a main stream tablet. The Transformer is highly tech cool and the Galaxy 10 is pretty and refined, but nothing has really come along to put Android into the main stream tablet world. Sure it's most likely 2.3, but the Fire is going pull a ton of attention to the Android tablet world.
I think an unexplored angle is that it could even break into Apple's bread and butter iPod touch market. If game developers pick up on it, it becomes a very attractive touch competitor. Better browser, better CPU, better screen, same price. I'm sure it will run Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja. In 6 months the reburbs will be $150, fairly close to the magic $100 disposable tech line.

Because of the integration with Amazon media services and their Cloud storage. I already have a Xoom 10.1 tablet so I'm not looking for the benefits of a tablet. The Fire will be a convenient device to read, email, watch an occasional movie and wait for the hackers to do their thing.
If I were buying a tablet it would not be a 7 inch one regardless of the capabilities.

Though I see the logic in the point you mention for your planned usage, I still do not see much point in a rooted Fire. Kind of a rat in the cage, due to the lack of storage expansion. Not to mention the Amazon interface and their closed app system would be compromised (not seeing Amazon letting that happen). In short, a person will have a few GB of space and that is it. Android market? What is the point? No room for apps & media
Seems the price is not worth the trade-offs, IMO.
I also have a KK which I paid $139 and for $60 more I will have a much more capable device. Also currently have 20gb of storage in the cloud that includes pics, docs, etc. plus the hundreds of songs. The music doesn't count against the 20gb.
My wife uses the KK exclusively.
Looks like the A1 is up on the Lenovo site, but at $229 for the 2GB model. The 16GB is $250.
Has anyone seen this for $199 anywhere?
The magic $199 price has me looking for a table to add as a remote control & some light couch surfing, emailing and occasional travel use. I like the fact that the Fire is dual core, but think the sd card, cameras and gps would be nice to have.
it was 199$ on the lenovo site for a while..
The release date has been pushed back twice already.
I am guessing they are selling well.
Its 229 and that's on SALE! It retails for 350!!! It also only has 2 gig internal. NO IPS, no dual core... same or worse RAM.... the only redeeming factor in my mind is that I think it has an expansion slot??? Also I don't like lenovo for bussiness or home..

It will probably always be "on sale".
What are the chances of an internal SD in the Fire?
There's bound to be a moderately simple way for Amazon to flash the thing, and I doubt it would take long to replicate once it's released.

I saw that too... other colors were available at the time as well, now it is only Black or White.
Also, the employee discount is only $10, which seems odd, so that means $239 for me - but I am still not sold on it at that price. If I could have gotten the discount on the lower spec one priced @ $199, I prob would have bit.
Estimated ship date is 11/8, but the rep I am chatting with now claims it will ship before then.
He has also stated that it does not have Gorilla Glass (which I think I read elsewhere in this thread that it has).
ETA: the rep I am talking too also says that the A1 ships with android 3.1... and just offered it to me for $219.
ETA2: he backtracked on the 3.1, and is also unable to confirm the release of 2.3
ETA3: I ordered a white one @ the $219 price: bonus = Free Shipping!
So, I'm an android fan and have been thinking about selling my iPad 1 and taking the cash and picking up the Fire. I've played with my co-workers and realize they are supposed to be compared. Was just wondering what you guys think?
You will probably be able to sell your ipad1 for at least 300 dollars. I guess it really depends what you want to do with the tablet. There are Android tablets out there with better specs than the Fire that you could get for 300 dollars, maybe cheaper with holiday sales. However, if you are mainly interested in surfing the web and consuming Amazon content, the Fire is the way to go. It probably meets my needs/wants about 80% of the time.
The main issues I have are that browser is not faster than my other tabs, not much storage space for offline content, and keypresses don't always respond.
Edited to add: lack of bluetooth is also a bummer.

There are plenty of tabs out there that will service you better than the KF. If you get $300 for your iPad1 seriously think about looking around at other options. After using an iPad I truly doubt, in the long run, the KF will satisfy you. More memory, more options, a much better chance at HC or ICS (very much doubt the KF will get either) and overall better android experience. Comparing the iPad (any version) to the KF is not really valid no matter who says so IMO. The only things they really share, IMO, is that they are both serviced by closed gardens.
That said, welcome back from the "Dark Side".
What I wish I could do is have both. But the wife says only one tablet. Just kind of ready something for something new. The majority of what I do is Netflix, Hulu, and web browsing. I'm thinking the fire will do all those things well and hoping the developer community gets behind this and we get some fun roms.

I can respect that. But don't buy something mainly because it's "new" and "flashy" or "because everyone is getting it". Get something that is scalable, stands good chance of upgrading and will provide you with a learning milieu that truncated e-readers likely will not.
Just food for thought.
Check out the HTC flyer at Best Buy for $299 and look at forums here. It has much better specs and will run netflix and hulu plus.

I really like the 7 inch size. The iPad can be too big sometimes.
It all depends on your needs. I for one love my fire. But you have to keep in mind it does have its limitations, aka memory. It has "only" 6.5 Gb of useable storage, personally I feel that is plenty of storage for my needs. I mean I've downloaded a ton of apps and have barely made a dent, but, if you plan on loading up the kindle fire with a ton of music and movies, you may want to think twice, me personallly ill just stream everything. I might load some music on it for a trip, but beyond that I don't see the point. Enough with my storage rant though. I'm really enjoying the kindle fire, I actually have grown to love Amazons custom skin it just makes sense to me, even though at times it can be a little frustrating because of some.minor lag, which I'm sure can be fixed with a software update. But, one thing I enjoy about the interface, is depending on what section you are in, aka books, apps, you can quickly access the store for that content, very User friendly, but if you don't like it then side load go launcher ex and you got an experiance like other android counterparts. And another feature I feel is well done is the search with a quick click of a.button you can choose to search device or web, fantastic. Plus watching Hulu plus on the fire is great, the $199 price tag is really a steal in my opinion.

I sold my ipad 1 around 2 weeks ago to make a switch to the kindle fire and loving it. The whole experience is much smoother, no more checkboards when I scroll down webpages and having multiple tabs open didnt make the tablet unusable. Though I do kinda miss the app store and itune university. I use my tablet mainly for browsing and reading so the smaller form factor is perfect. Before the kindle fire I thought about switching to the galaxy tab 8.9 its significantly easier to handle than the ipad weight just under a lb. I really liked it but for less than half the cost and comparable specs I took the kindle fire over it

The flyer is 7 inches. I don't have any big problems with Fire, you just might want to check all your 7 inch options before you decide. Of course with the Fire, you can't beat the price.
I sold my 16GB iPad 1 (WiFi) for ~$225 and got a Fire, I couldn't be happier.
I use an ipad2 as a college book and internet lol... if you can justify using it and getting a better experience go for it. I have an android phone so that would be too much android in my life. I'm sticking with the ipad and android together. Makes the one offset the other when one becomes lacking.

I sold my ipad earlier this year and picked up a nook. I just couldn't stand iOS. Sold the nook and now i have a Fire. I like it a lot, and i'm really tempted to keep it. I have to say I am disappointed with the lack of storage. As far as i am concerned that is the only major drawback, albeit a large one for me as I can at times be without internet for several months at a time. This is primarily when I want a tablet for movies and reading.
As far as its intended function, as an e-reader, it performs quite well. With wi-fi turned off and the brightness at about 80%, i'm seeing an hour for every ten percent down to 15% before I plug it in.
I think it is a great size. For the most part it is quite portable. Its got some heft to it, but it feels right and solid. I'm sure you have read plenty of reviews by now, so no point in me going on about it.
I say bite the bullet and pick one up as it is quite cheap. If u don't like it sell it, i'm sure these things will be sold out for an amount of time some where, at that point you definitely shouldn't have a problem getting your money back. Heck, pick one up locally, most places now have an extended return policy because of the holidays. I've already bought two as gifts for my family when I go to visit them.

If you have access to usb power source when you are away from internet, you might check out the seagate go flex satellite( 500gb hdd with built in wifi). You can sideload the app and stream media from the drive to your device. The app isn't terrific, but it does work on the fire. The hdd acts as a router and creates a network between it and your device.
Well, my problem has been fixed. I'm keeping the iPad, so the kids and wife can use it and I'll be buying a Fire right around Xmas. Talked the wife into letting me buy one after saving up some money. Thanks all for the recommendations.
Im really in to moddibg and flashing roms onto my inspire 4G and am close to finally getting around to getting an Android tab. After reading countless reviews for $200 it seems the Kindle Fire is by far superior to other competitors around the $200 or less range. I have played with one several times and I'm just not too sure that I like how it moves around between the apps and books and things, I don't plan on reading very much, just an occasional java development book or two because I am just starting, but I prefer the hard copies. So, I like how tabs that aren't as good such as the coby kryos functions, more what I think to be "actual android" like you would find on a android phone or the all-mighty Samsung galaxy tab. I'm thinking about just getting the fire and flashing some custom roms, but are there and solid ones floating around on xda that offer more of an android experience with the fire? And is the fire even really the best choice for around $200? Please reply with your opinions!

If all you want is a better interface than what the stock experience offers and helps switch between apps, you could just install a different launcher and obtain the same results you would have with a custom ROM. However, if you want to have total control over the overall experience using the tablet, rooting and installing a custom ROM is the way to go.
I've had my Fire for about a month or so, I do like it but miss the screen estate found on larger tablets. I am trying to sell or trade mine in for something else and eventually buy an Asus Transformer or something comparable.
i've been looking at these low cost tablets.. they look pretty amazing for the price:
google ainovo and check them out (can't post links yet)
look in Dev section.
I think its great
--sent from my glacier.
Personally for a sub 200 (USD) tablet I think it's amazing. I was rather cautious buying mine because I had heard some harsh reviews and heard that Fire 2 was right around the corner. So I waited until someone I knew physically had one so I could "test drive" it so to speak. I was really amazed that a lot of the initial bad reviews were solved with the latest software updates. So I bit the bullet and went and got one of my own. Probably the best 200(USD) I have spent of 2012.
For me personally the Pros far outweigh the cons of the system.
Pros:
Lightweight, portable, elegant
Hundreds of hours of reading material
Tinkering gadget (Ability to run CM7 and CM9 for full blown tablet access)
Instant access to internet/news without the need to get out the laptop (2007 style desktop replacement can you say HEAVY)
Built in comic book reader with 1000's of free name brand comics (Ironman, Avengers, Marvel, Vampire Hunter D, Dr. Who)
All within a frame that is about as heavy (if not lighter actually) as a hardback novel.
Cons:
No bluetooth. (Personally I haven't used bluetooth since 2006'ish).
No "external" storage i.e. Sd card reader. (Again personally this is not a problem because between Dropbox, Skydrive, Amazon Cloud, and Google Music I have well over 50 gigs available "on demand" in the cloud. 5 gigs is more than enough for a plane, train, bus commute.)
7 inch screen. (Some people complain and say it's not big enough, but I find the iPad to be too unwieldy and cumbersome for what is basically a glorified e-reader.)
So there you go. Personally like I said I don't think you are going to get much better for under 200(USD). Dual Core, 512mb of ram, 5 gigs of internal storage, 3 gigs for OS and App installs.
Hope this helps
Just got kine this past weekend and put cm7 on it and have it set up to use for work while i am on the road by teathering it to my phone and i love ot it has good power for a cheap tabley and makes my life so much easier while on the road

For the price point, I don't know that you can really beat this tablet.
Bought mine because I wanted an E-reader for my graduate studies and have been itching to get my hands on an Android Tablet. Development is steady and there are certainly plenty of ROMs to choose from.
My only complaint, like others, is the lack of an SD Card slot. 8gb can go by very quickly but I'll make it work. I think the size is a personal preference. For my tastes, its perfect.
The price is why I bought it. Its awesome is why I keep it.

After I got my Fire, I actually gave my iPad my niece because I love the 7 inch size (it fits into my larger pockets even) and it is lighter which makes reading in bed easier (read: I've dropped my iPad on my face to often while dozing off).
The price was a big factor at the time, but now that I have it I think it is worth at least $100 more. Amazon has all the content (books, music and movies) of the Apple and Google markets and often will automatically drop prices to match those stores.
One of the biggest pluses is the fact that the dev subforum and this Fire forum in general is one of the most useful and kind in all of XDA (and that's becoming more rare these days). And because the Fire was such a great seller there a lot of active development and cool things to try out.
My only concern at this point is the rumors of a Fire 2 coming sooner than later (and the price should remain the same...if they raise out at all they would kill the success of this original Fire) and the possibility of a Nexus tablet from Google that would be priced similarly (if not cheaper...rumors put it at $150-250). If those rumors are true, it would likely have superior specs and ICS out of the gate. However, it's hard to tell if those rumors are accurate and what the time frame is.
All in all, I love my Fire and have bought two others as gifts and out has been my favorite tablet yet. You probably won't regret the purchase if you take the jump.
Please excuse typos as I'm typing this on my phone
Honestly can't go wrong for the price. If you live with not having the storage space and, can root and install a different rom. Great buy for $200. Craigslist have ones for cheaper.

Once haschode has HWA working properly in ICS for the KFs you definitely cannot beat them for the price.
It feels as zippy as the galaxy tabs I have played with. I am currently running AOKP and it is like a new tablet.
Like many others though the main downfall is the 8gb storage limit.
However, books do not take up that much room, I stream my music from Google Music, and I stream most video. I have watched a movie on there, but I knew I was gonna need one to watch for a couple of hours so I preloaded it and then deleted it after viewing so it was not a big deal.
its a great purchase especially with the wonderful community here.
Great tablet. no issue. with $199, all the short coming can be worked around and lived with it.
if you don't like the way it looks and wants to have total control, just flash it with custom rom and that works great. I have mine running with Energy's rom.
Battery life is great after the custom rom. 7" is great. I stored music on the cloud. For video, just download what is needed and delete afterward.
If anyone is so concerns on Fire2 coming out soon, just get an used one.
Can't beat the price. Hardware keeps up with more expensive tablets and you can accessorize .___. If that's your kind of thing.
I really like mine, and I was adamant about never having a tablet because of lack of a real function (my wife bought this one for me).
I don't mind the lack of space. I don't do movies ever and my music stays on my phone (which has a much nicer DAC).
Okay I finally decided I'm going to buy a tablet and I think the Nexus 7 is the one to get.
Couple quick questions...
It's primary usage is going to be as a PDF reader so I can read my books on it and highlight the PDF documents. With that said, is the 7" a decent size for this or should I go with a larger 10" model? In addition, I'm going to want to use a stylus pen to highlight with rather than my hand. With that said, what's the best option to buy as an aftermarket pen? I'm likely going to purchase the ezPDF program for this function. Good app or is there a better one out there?
Thirdly, I'll use it for multimedia playback as well. Does it have a limitation on file size (e.g. 4GB limit) or can I drop a 12GB MKV file on it and have at it (or does it need to be split up?). Thanks.
If the Nexus 7 doesn't fit the bill for these things do you guys have any other recommendations on a tablet? I'm not looking to break the wallet on this one so the 32GB seems to be where I'm aiming at the moment.
Sorry for all the questions but I figured I'd put them all in one thread rather than posting several.
You should definitley go with the 10 inch tablet.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda premium
I have the 7in and the reason I was even looking at the Nexus 7 to begin with is due to it's PERFECT size as a reader. IMO, a 10 is way too big to carry around with you everywhere and hold in your hands to read. The 7in is about the same width and height of the average book and slips right into my bag to be used anywhere. As a student, I predominantly use mine for PDFs and books too, and it is PERFECT. Between the native reader and the office suite app, I have no problems loading or viewing PDFs, docs, or even power points. I've viewed 50page+ power points on this tablet with ease.
But, this is just my opinion of course. The best thing for you to do is hold both the 7 and 10 inch for yourself to see which best suits your needs.
I also watch plenty of tv show episodes I've torrented. My files have all played flawlessly. When turned in landscape, it's a really great size to watch movies and shows on. I have the portenzo bookcase which can turn into a stand and it makes for sick Sons of Anarchy viewing in crisp HD. :d

Firstly: the 7 is great for me, reading and also annotating. Ezpdf is good but I now prefer mantano pro.
Secondly don't worry too much about expensive pens for highlighting, I grab styluses from the pound shop here in the UK as my kids keep losing them and they work absolutely fine.
Thirdly I believe that the partition is formatted with the Linux ext filesystem (some one will correct me if I am wrong) so you shouldn't have any worries there.
Cheers danny

I actually tried to download 5-6GB torrent, single file, and it didn't work, seems like 4gb is the limit.. Didn't try to look for solution, just continued download on pc
And for reading, I find it very nice, I'm also a student, and I open a lot of PDFs. Screen is really sharp, and the 7" fits perfectly.. 10" is a bit too much for me to carry around, that's the reason I've got nexus instead of my old 10.1" netbook..
okay purchased two Nexus 7's. One for me (32GB) and one for the girlfriend (16GB). Hope it ships now it says "delivered in 3 - 5 days" and I'm out of town in 8 days...don't let me down Google!!! :silly:
BTW I was surprised to see Google charges taxes...

Your Last Question..
I have tried many stylus.. Get a JOT PRO... it works better then anything else out there. Thou its not perfect its in my opinion the only real choice there is .
Hope you enjoy your new Tablet....
After reading this thread and some searching on XDA I went with the 8 stylus pens for $8.99 thing. This way I have a girl color one to give with the 16GB tablet.
Any quick pointers to threads I should glance at and things I should do with this device? Any good tablet specific apps or things I should be looking at?
I recently bought a hand stylus. It's a rubber tip pen but the tip is only 4mm thick. It's a bit steep at 30$, but I like the quality of it. And the tips are replaceable which is nice.
It can be hard to justify a $30 stylus when you can get 15 cheap ones for half the price on amazon, but I do love mine. Handstylus.com

I bought this N7 bundle for $16. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008ZHB6QC/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00
I just really wanted the case (which ended up being my favorite out of the many I've gotten) but it came with a stylus. Now I'm a stylus user. The one it came with works great and the case has a pen loop for it which is even better. As for 7" or 10", I prefer 7. I've had many tablets including the iPad and the 10 is just too big. It starts to become a pain in the ass to carry it around after a while. There hasn't been a moment with the 7 where I wished I had a bigger screen.
I have had a couple of stylus but many of them have thick ends, ok to select stuff when on the net and stuff but to draw with or write they are also. I have been looking for one with a slim top more like a pen to write with but havn't settled on one yet.
just thinking of trying a tablet , iPad mini retina is too expensive for me , should i try Nexus 7 2013 ? is the extra 1.8inch size worth it ?
or just just save up and get something next year and stick to Macbook Air + G2 combo ?

No Nexus 7 Inch etc. I have that combo... G2 and Nexus 7 and I am selling the Nexus....
Its really no use if its only you who will use it. If more ppl will have access to the tablet etc, maybe, okay.
Also depends how you gonna use it. If you want to have it lying arround at home next to your G2, no use.
If you wanna take it somewhere like on travels, trips, waiting 12 hours in an Airport. And you do not own a laptop. Okay, maybe?
But still its better go for something like N10.
The difference is really not that big that it would be an clear advantage.
I mean if you can choose between 10 inch and 7 inch, and you are not a small woman or man, and then 10 is too big for you, then again 7 might be fine.
I would suggest, go into a store and check the sizes. But the N7 to the G2 om regards of size is not a good reason to consider

I have an N7 and I love it. It's a perfect match for the G2, for me.
First off, the market clearly shows the popularity of the 7" format for tablets. After owning an N7 for a year, not only have friends/family switched from the larger iPad format, now when I see people in public using iPads they look downright awkward - kinka like they are lugging around home plate.
Second, the 7" tablet format is friendlier than the G2-sized format for reading and web browsing. Evern though the actual size difference is not as constrasting as it would be with an iPad, the actual usage patterns throughout the day are very different. It's a joy to hold and use my N7 when browsing in front of the TV or reading at bedtime. I don't reach for my G2 for this. Is this a luxury? For me it is - but I like it.
All this said, this is just MY experience. What works for you may be different, and I don't pretend to know what will work for you. Just wanted to share my 2 cents.
I have both, and use both. Really, only you know your life well enough to know how you would use your devices.
I have both and love both. I also have the Xoom and don't like the 10" size. The Nexus 7 can't really be compared to the G2 imo. The experience on the N7 is much better for just about everything.
I have both and love it. Phone is great for being out and about. Tablet is perfect for laying in bed or sitting on the couch. Perfect combo!
I have both and don't be fooled, the screen size difference is significant. I don't play games or read or watch Netflix on my phone. I couldn't live without my N7 and its small enough to fit in my back jeans pocket and its always in my back pack. F iTunes I'd never buy a product that restricted me having to use iTunes or some proprietary software app to connect it to my PC.

Yep, big difference in screen size. Yep, Itunes sucks....Google Music is way better and less bloated.
I have G2 and ipad retina 10' , I don't feel like I need a smaller tablet and I have access to both app store. I'd say 80% of my friends have Iphone and ipads so I can talk to them with apple only apps like facetime and imessage.
The best thing about Nexus is portability. Back pocket ftw
