Thinking about RAZR HD... how's big red? - RAZR HD General

How's the cost on Verizon's plan? I was wanting to go prepaid but lte and Verizon's amazing voice coverage is alluring. I can get a 12% discount through work... our att bill right now on 2 lines is around 120 per month. Should I do it?

2 lines on the new shared plan is about 120+ depending on how much data you want. I pay 160 for 2 lines and 6gbs. I'd do it, its worth it, coverage is awesome and lte speeds are better than my broadband

If you have a very saturated 4G availability with Verizon in your area, I would highly suggest it. I have found my pain with big red in areas where there is poor 4G coverage. An example would be a business trip to Salt Lake City for 2 weeks gave me the best experience with my Samsung Galaxy S3. But at home in Tennessee, my phone would give me a NO SIM error 50% of the time when trying to send a text or make a call, rendering my S3 useless. Waiting on an alternate replacement Razr HD now, just need to get one in stock. In the mean time, Verizon sent me a Nexus to use. Long story short, Verizon has treated me pretty well even with all the problems with the S3.

If there's not good 4g coverage, can you turn off 4g on your phone?

Your phone will automatically revert to 3g if you have no 4g signal.

Ironically I live in salt lake city so... Yeah.. Coverage here is amazing. Just last night my brother brought over his spanking new GS3 from sprint. Not only could he not get 4g in my basement, he couldn't get 3g, 1x or even phone service and missed an important call while we sat there. I popped open speed test on the maxx and my lte hit 18mbit. I laughed, he cried, it was good times to be had. He didn't think the $10/month he was saving was quite as appealing anymore.
I travel around the west a lot and anywhere I've been I always have the best reception of anyone I'm with unless they're also on Verizon. They're not perfect by any means but their coverage commercials are no lie.

Also there are apps to disable lte all together if you're in an area you know doesn't have it. Saves on battery if the radio isn't searching.

Your data is not bad at all and should work well with a Verizon shared plan. Coverage is awesome and I wouldn't worry too much about the contract.

The only worry is if you can hit 2GB per phone on 3g and you're in an area that does have good 4g you can get yourself into trouble really fast. It was worth the $650 for my maxx to keep the unlimited plan.

Since I have Sirius in the car, I decided against streaming music, and I rarely, if ever, need to stream movies or TV shows as I download decent quality versions of whatever before it's available for streaming... long story short, I don't use as much data as I thought I would. With wifi at home, or in any hotel I stay at for business, I am having a hard time hitting 1 gb of data used. So the bottom tier verizon plan works for me, at around $115 for two phones after my military discount. Your mileage may vary.

I looked at the 2 GB plan and two lines, it'd be about 115 a month after our employee discount not including taxes and fees. Which I'm sure there'll be about 15 bucks worth.

Does anyone STILL not have 4g?

Hey all! Long time HTC EVO 4g user! (since day 1.) I was wondering if anyone is still like me and their area STILL has no 4g??? I live in Long Island, New York and STILL to this day only a small part of NYC has 4g. I prob only got the chance to use 4g with my phone about 2 times since iv had it. =/
I think you will find that there are many Evo owners that do not have access to 4G and have never used it. There are a few spots where I can get 4G but not where I live or work so I keep 4G turned off all the time.
I never used my 4G either had it since last Jan. I think Sprint got us with that extra $10 a month.

NO 4G in BUFFALO
No 4G in Buffalo. Rochester has it, as does Syracuse...
But the 2 largest cities in NY go without.
Thank you Sprint.
So glad I get to pay them the 4G tax of $10 a month, oh sorry, I meant their "Enhanced data" upcharge.

Don't let them kid you, the $10 upcharge was meant to be a 4G fee. But because the roll out took so long, they had to market it as an "enhanced data fee for smartphones".
None in metro Detroit either. There are apparently a few spots where Clearwire has towers in the city proper, but I have never been able to find it. The only benefit is that it doesn't limit which Rom I get to use!
Very little parts of NYC have it.
i live on long island, about a 30 minute train ride into penn station and not one part of long island has it. all they would need to do is just spread the radius about 50 more miles and id have it! lol

The only time I get to use 4g is when I'm on vacation to a larger city. I've had the phone for almost 1.5 years and have probably used 4g for less than 2 hours.

I live near you in Toledo, according to sprint there is no 4g here, but clearwire's map shows ONE tower in the downtown area. It actually works very good since nobody really knows about it. But it only works for a few block radius around the tower, so pretty much useless.
I really hope the Detroit metro area gets LTE very soon, or else I will be switching to verizon
I bought my evo knowing I would never see a day of 4g I have only had it once when driving through dc I live in FL and there is absoutly none by me and Its upsetting knowing I pay sprints bs $10 premium data charge...and sprint isnt dealing with wimax anymore...grr

Sprint promised me in writing twice that they would have 4g in my area by the end of 2010. Still no 4g here. The closest 4g tower is 45 miles away. I don't pay that $10 fee, so Sprint can blow me.
No sprint 4G in New Orleans. We do have excellent vzw 4G LTE however. If verizon would every get over their data limits I would soooooo be gone.
My phone has never seen 4G and never will, but they sure did get my 10 bucks every month.... :/

Long time Epic users, if you could bail on Sprint...

I love the Epic. Love it. So much that even though I used the ET4G for a while, I went back to the Epic. The problem is that I don't love Sprint. For the 10+ years I've been a customer, I've watched the quality of their customer service and technical output decrease considerably. Living in New York City, I'm dealing with data speed slower than a dial-up modem. Sprint claims that they're over capacity in my neighborhood. For a carrier to make a claim like that in NYC is absolutely ludicrous. Nevermind that there are far more densely populated areas of the city with drastically better data speeds than I'm getting, one of the three significant mobile phone carriers should be ashamed to admit that they can't provide adequate service in New York City.
Now, let's suppose you could walk away from your Sprint contract free of charge and go to Verizon for slightly less than you're paying now. Additionally, imagine you've never used more than 2 gigs of data in a month (Sprint's data speeds make using more than 500 MB of 3G in a month impossible anyway) so the somewhat enigmatic lure of "unlimited data" means nothing to you.
Would you walk or stick it out with Sprint?
Only for Droid 4
thats a whole lot of imagining.
i have the opposite experience. 8 yeasr sprint customer here and customer service now blows the old system out of the water. i havent gotten a foreign csr in a long time. i cant stand heavy indian accent on a tech support line. my data speeds are also good. i wont mention the fact that i live in the same city as their corp headquarters though. haha.
my only complaints are the lack of tons of phone choices. att and vzw are constantly rolling out new devices. cant someone throw sprint a bone here?
that and the loss of yearly upgrades, but none of the big carriers have that, so i guess its a non issue.
i think i will stay.
The company I work for was bought 6 months ago and I just learned I get a very decent discount on verizon, enough to make it come within $5 what I'm paying now for 2 epic 4gs on sprint (even though I still get 25% off sprint from my old work). The other limitations of verizon (only having 10 'unlimited' numbers, only 2gb of data per phone) don't really affect us at all. Combined our peak data usage in a given month was just over 1gb.
So that's a long way of saying...I'm in the same boat you're describing. Only thing keeping us around now is not wanting to burn another $400 for 2 contract price phones and of course the ETF from sprint. But my contract expires in december, so if the gs3 is on verizon first I'll almost certainly switch and bring my fiance a few months later when her contract is up. Sprint's data service is really bad in many places, even though I 'get' 4g in grand rapids and columbus, where I spend most of my time (its a good thing downtown grand rapids has 4g because the 3g data is unusable in my experience).
I get <100kbps consistently... no 4g ever, and coverage is even worse one town over where I visit my family.
But I somehow go through 8gbs of data every month so I guess I am stuck with sprint for a while. I plan on getting the galaxy note/journal the day its released.

That's exactly what's been holding me up. My wife and I don't really feel like dropping $400 on new phones right now. In addition, there will be certain desirable devices hitting the market a few months down the line, and it would be preferable to hold out for those instead. I'm able to get out of my Sprint contract because of the change they made to the way they bill family plans, but according to them, that option is only available to me until the end of this billing cycle. In theory, I should be able to get out of my contract on the basis of the pathetic data speeds available here but they'll lie until they're blue in the face to try to prevent me from doing that. Apart from the potential benefits of their new network whenever that actually hits the NYC market, I don't have a compelling reason to keep giving money to Sprint.

the new devices always look great. the problem is that I'd have to run them on a Sprint network that gives me average downstream data speeds of 0.05 Mbps. What's the point? Maybe 15 months from now or so it'll be another story, but that's a long way (and a lot of months at $170/per) off.
I'm sticking it out. I'm going on 11 years with Sprint and I'm one of those folks that has never had a problem with their CS. I will admit that this is the longest I have ever sat on an upgrade due to a lack of phone options, but I understand they're undergoing changes right now, so I'll be patient. I still like- not love -my device now, and I get full bars of 4G where I live, so it could be worse.

Been with Sprint for 10 years. What's kept me with Sprint is the price/value. Fortunately we get decent 3G here but no WiMax. My future brother in law works for Verizon and I told him I'd switch in August when my contracts are up if he can get me a similar monthly bill if it's clear Sprint isn't releasing LTE here anytime soon. Verizon has had LTE here since November. I'd prefer to stick with Sprint, but watching every other carrier here turn on 4G (even freaking US Cellular) has really soured me lately.
The data restrictions/throttling on other carriers are the biggest negative for me. I've been burning >15GB/month on the regular over 3G (no 4g within 400mi). I pay for unlimited, so I'll use it (all legit usage). The 2 and 5GB plans out there are just stupid as a whole IMO. Carriers nickel and dime customers to death.
What can I say, I stream music a lot. None of that used bandwidth is from tethering or downloading huge ass files via the phone.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Don't you have roaming? Why would your speeds suck if you can roam on Verizon?
And if they still do, then why do you think switching would help?
Because I'm not roaming on Verizon, I'm always connected to Sprint. The data issue is the result of Sprint not being able to provide adequate bandwidth for their customers in this neighborhood.

Last year was a much easier decision. I had been a Sprint customer for about a decade and was dealing with the decline of Sprint 3G data to less than dial-up speed and 4G coverage that was virtually non-existent for the areas where it mattered, home and work and in between. When Verizon offered unlimited 4G LTE the decision was clear. I negotiated with Sprint retention to lower the ETF to ~$75 and jumped ship. In comparison, I get Verizon LTE coverage everywhere I go, the throughput is significantly better than broadband DSL and the latency is optimal for latency sensitive applications like VOIP. I'm even paying a little less than I was paying Sprint. Now that the service issue is out of the way I'm waiting for great phones to appear on Verizon such as Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S III, etc. Samsung Epic 4G, except for maybe the limited DRAM, is a much better phone than the majority of phones on Verizon including my HTC Thunderbolt.
For me, it's a hard choice. I get 20% off Sprint through my work and 15% through Verizon, so even the cheapest plan from Version would be about $10 extra per month, and right now I'm saving as much as I can. Another thing is I do go over 4GB a month, but it depends. I actually checked my average the other day and it was literally 3.99 GB. Sprint data around here has gradually declined since the iPhone release, making it so even streaming low quality YouTube video is hit or miss (mostly miss). Hell even Pandora takes forever at times to load the next song, and if Pandora is having problems then jesus christ. There is no 4g availability around here, and they don't give us access to the wifi at work (boo). So right now I'll likely stay with Sprint, but my contract is up in June so we'll see then.

wow, they had an offer for unlimited data? and for how long are you able to get that? I would assume that's an introductory offer and eventually you get dropped down to a capped data plan.
I've noticed Sprint 3g speeds vary wildly depending on where I'm at. In my home (small town) I'll get 400-600k down which is good enough for light usage when away from wi-fi. In the nearby city I get around 1.0 - 1.5 mbps down which is really good enough for about anything I'd want to do on my phone while out and about.
However when I visit my family in Omaha (which is a pretty good size city) I get horrendous speeds (like 50kbps) which is just unusable. If I lived in this type of coverage I would have no choice but to switch.

On the other hand, I get great speeds in Lincoln, and even 4G here on campus
I'm still debating on what I'll do when my contract is up in August. I may just wait around until a huge breakthrough in phone tech, or maybe I'll go for the SIII? I don't really want to switch carriers because my only discount is through Sprint.. Hopefully the network enhancements rock

I was thinking about switching to Verizon, but the results you gave are for one city, in one corner of the country, I need more proof! And truthfully they need to test again when tmobiles LTE network goes active. I also thought it odd for the other 3 carriers they used HTC phones, and for TMobile they used the galaxy S. Why not use the sensation to make is fair, or use galaxy S II for all 4 carriers? My guess.....someone knows TMobile is faster and wanted to put them in a crutch...just sayin lol. Besides the lack of iPhone usability, I have no issues with them. I've gone through some painful bleeding edge technology with the G1, the Vibrant and its crappy GPS issue, and now I'm testing out a Nokia Lumia 710 which has actually impressed me, minus the availability of WP7 apps. I like the fact that they're cheap as hell compared to AT&T or Verizon.

Leaving Unlimited LTE - Going Prepaid Nexus 4?

Who else is leaving Verizon and the comfort of Unlimited Data - LTE no less - and going prepaid?
I'm 99% certain I'm doing this. I'm more worried about coverage in the pre paid plans then about leaving Verizon. Good riddance! But still scary!
Who else is going through this and what plan are you going to try?

Depends on which prepaid you are going for. I left my unlimited data since I could save a hell lot more money with prepaid. (around 40 dollars a month)
I abandoned my Verizon Galaxy Nexus (and ate the ETF) for a Play Store Galaxy Nexus and a Straight Talk (AT&T) prepaid plan in May. I haven't looked back since. Got all the updates and cut my bill in half. Good things with prepaid is you dont have to commit. I say try out AT&T and T-Mo based prepaid plans in your area and see if you'll be happy with the service. When the Nexus 4 is released, all I need to do is put my SIM card in it...done.
I'm leaving sprint with their unlimited data
.I work at a t mobile retailer and will probably use T-Mobile prepaid and get the phone..

You should really make sure what type of coverage/data speeds you'll be getting on T-Mobile or AT&Ts networks before you make the jump. We all want the N4, but unfortunately, it's just not going to be viable for some people.
Cheers
I have a Straight Talk ATT Sim coming as well as T-Mobile Prepaid. I will try both and see. I only have the coverage maps to go by and a few friends. I live in Spokane Washington so if anyone knows about that area let me know!

I did this same thing about three months ago. Between me and my wife we are saving about $100 per month for smart phone service. I wont argue that Verizon is the king as far as coverage goes but they are just too proud of their services and they are punishing long term loyal customers which I won't stand for.
I would say we are receiving about 90% of other service we had with Verizon for about half the cost. It was a no brainer for me. Even with the etf, I'm already saving money!

I'm 99% certain I'm doing this. I'm more worried about coverage in the pre paid plans then about leaving Verizon. Good riddance! But still scary!

Not going pre paid but going to t-mobile unlimited.
Straight Talk looks good but I keep hearing about strict data policies. I use like 1 gig a month usually. Its the 100 MB a day that seems limiting. Occasionally, I need that.

Its more like 2gb a month. I don't put much stock in the 100mb a day thing because I've busted that bunches of times with no reprocussions. YMMV.
If data is a concern, get a T-Mobile sim if their coverage is good in your area. I read all the time about people using 5-7gb a month without being throttled.
I actually have a T Mobile sim coming as well. That 30 dollar plan looks awesome. I just don't know if I can do 100 minutes and how their coverage is.
I keep reading that pre paid plans do not have roaming either, does anyone know what that actually means? For example, what if I leave my state and I go to another city that has good coverage with the same prepaid carrier is that considered roaming?

I am doing this. I have a plan for me and the wife. My contract is up in January so ill be buying a Nexus 4 in late december to test it out/port my number before my contract ends effective 2/2. If all is good my wife will be making the transition as well. Right now we pay $150 for our plan through Verizon for 700/unlmtd/unlmtd. We only use like 100 minutes a month so im paying for the data/messaging... all of which I cant use data inside my home, so its Wifi only, and messaging at home hardly works anyways... wifey stays home with the baby and only uses like 100mb a month on the data package.......
All said and done I cannot believe I didnt make this switch earlier. Ill be saving over $900 this year alone incl the cost of the devices. Cant beat that..
That said - Anyone interested in a Galaxy Nexus in Mint condition (I mean mint.. its a Refurb that just got sent to me last week and rebuilt 2 weeks ago, not a knick or scratch) or a RAZR Black 16gb
Anyone in SE Michigan using T-Mobile $30 plan? Checking the coverage map looks very sketchy once you get off the e-ways.
AT&T used currently, so Straight Talk is an option, but use hardly any minutes so the T-Mobile plan looks enticing, but do travel a bit to the UP and Minnesota which looks like it would be hit or miss on coverage compared to AT&T/Straight Talk.
T-Mobile's HSPA+ is faster than Verizon LTE. I wish T-Mobile had the coverage Verizon did though.

H+ is such a sketchy network compared to LTE though. Very inconsistent and can be literally polar opposites in terms of data speeds in one spot to ten feet away. From my parking spot at work to the door I go from 8down to 1down with no obstructions. Same can be said in my house. With an LTE phone I don't see those kinds of fluctuations.

No that's not considered roaming. I used my gnex on straight talk at&t & postpaid t-mobile. Here is an example of roaming: when I go upstate, there is literally no tmo coverage. In those areas (about 3 hrs north of westchester county in ny), my postpaid tmo account will roam onto at&t. At that moment, I am a tmo customer roaming onto at&t. If I were on tmo prepaid, I would not get any service at all. I would not roam onto at&t. However, on my straight talk at&t sim, I had service up there. Data speeds are slower that tmo, but there at&t has a bigger footprint.

I did just this about two weeks ago. I went with tmobile $50 unlimited and cut my bill in half. I'm really sorry I didn't do it sooner to be honest. I paid my ETF, but that's ok because I'll make it up in like 3 months of having a lower bill. It was worth it to me, because verizon's anti-consumer nonsense was really starting to bother me, and their customer service has never been great in my experience.
Coverage with tmobile has actually been pretty good in Indianapolis. However, I'm currently on an Iphone 4 and can only get edge speeds as the network farm isnt done in my area. I really like the iphone a lot, considerably better than my incredible 2, though I will probably grab a nexus 4 when it comes out, if only for variety. It's nice being able to pop a sim card out of one phone and into another without the hassle of dealing with locked up, overpriced phones.
Do it, but you might want to think about keeping a spare phone around in case you have to have your nexus 4 repaired. an older android im sure would be fine, assuming it's a model with decent build quality that can stand the test of time.

Thinking of getting off Verizon and on T-Mobile with nexus 4

I hate how Verizon doesn't support gsm phones, I can't upgrade my plan without loosing my unlimited data, and I can't activate any of the manufacturer version of a device because they only support CDMA.
How is everyone's satisfaction with T-Mobile? That's the only carrier I can go to and I'm in Massachusetts. If anyone can give me a good idea on what the difference in service is like that would be great.

Not sure where you are, but this site helped me a lot when I was doing research on carriers in my area.
http://www.rootmetrics.com/compare-carriers/united-states/worcester/worcester-january-2013/
I took a quick glance there... and it looks pretty bad.
Compared to my area:

T-Mobile coverage/service is great here.

i agree, i live in kentucky and i easily use about 6-10gb a month and not having to worry about a data cap is lovely. i have been in a few spotty areas before but for the most part ive always been able to make calls and i havent dropped one yet. ive tried straight talk att here before i went to tmobile and while i did like att service the capped me at 1.5gb and i was only 1 week into the service.
id say look at the places you will be going most and see if tmobile has the coverage there and see if youll be ok with it first, if so make the jump, i did and i havent looked back yet.. im on the $70 unlimited no contract plan
T-No works well in all cities I go to and I have been with them for 7 years or so... check their coverage maps. They are very accurate ...

My wife and I made the switch from Veriz to T-Mob a few months ago.
There is one big overriding rule. In big population centers... T-Mob is just fine. Building penetration is not as good as Verizon though. Driving around through the lesser populated areas (outskirts and countryside), there is very little (read: none) T-Mob data coverage.
We live in Charlotte, NC and here I am completely happy with the service (data speeds are excellent). But just outside of the metro area, I am roaming. On a trip back to Iowa, the only place we had T-Mobile data was around Des Moines. Outside of Des Moines, we were roaming the whole time (even in Iowa City with population over 80,000).
You can roam with voice and text, and that generally works fine.
You can roam on data (small monthly allowances... depends on data plan) but speeds are very (read: painfully) slow.
But, for us it made sense... It saved us over a thousand dollars a year.
My two cents: If you spend your time in big cities... I'd go for it (or at least try a monthly pre-paid plan). There will be a drop off in coverage compared to verizon, but it is completely tolerable in my opinion.
If you live in (or spend a lot of time) in a small town, or you are on the highway, don't do it if you need data.
I'm really happy with T-Mobile coming from sprint. I live in south Florida and I get full bars almost everywhere I go. Data speed is just awesome I get between 8 to 14 mbps. Compare to sprint in a good day 750 kbps. And plans start at $30 which is what I have!

I live in Brooklyn, NYC and tmo has been great....well at least to me. Building penetration is lacking, but I can live with that! My speeds are usually great and the $30 data plan takes care of my needs...so for me its perfect!
I live jus north of Boston, Lynn to be exact and have great service. I work in Needham(out skirts of Boston) which I also get great service. My wife's family lives in the south shore (brockton) where the coverage is not so great. I go to the cape every year and the service there is not so great. Both those areas are mainly switching from E to 1 bar on H. Hope this info helps you. Good luck.
Also my wife and friend have att and they get good service jus about everywhere. I don't know how the data speeds are for att but they have better coverage and more expensive than T-Mobile.

Lakeville. Its a little southwest if Boston close to Middleborough
And thank you everyone for all the info! I think I can deal with a little less coverage.

I'm on the south shore and recently switched from vzw to tmo. Factually, the network is worse but there hasn't been a time when I couldn't use the phone. Data speeds are fine and I'm not missing messages or calls. My low usage(save for data) didn't justify the exuberant cost that vzw charges and the limits were annoyingly restricting.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium
I made the same decision as you last month and here is what I did.
I bought the n4 and the T-Mobile 30/month plan while I still had my Vzw account. I then tested the network and data in my two week return period Google gives. I then decided it was good and canceled my Vzw account.
Once I canceled Vzw and was on tmobiles 70/month unlimited plan, I started having issues that I personally couldn't live with. Tmobiles data speed are excellent (7-42mbps) however their signal is very spotty and my phone was constantly dropping to edge. I could live with this because of the cost savings, however when i noticed I was getting delayed text (sending and receiving) and phone calls not going through, I really started regretting Vzw which was always solid for me. T-Mobile tech support reminds me of the Citibank commercial "this is Peggy" and it sucks!
I then switched to att cause I love the n4, and was able to sign up contract free which I love. Their speeds are a lot slower, but their coverage is very solid. This is when I started actually becoming angry that the n4 didn't support lte since att has lte in the area and tmobile doesn't.
I work in north attleboro ma and this is just my 2 cents. I personally travel for work sometimes and really didn't want to run into no coverage zones with T-Mobile and not be able to roam. Att is not as good as Vzw, so only time will tell. Worst comes to worst I sign on with Vzw again in the future and get their latest and greatest, would have lost unlimited data regardless. Let me know if you need any more advice

Yep. Moved to T-Mobile! Loving it. Love my nexus 4 too
T-Mobile has 4g in my area but hspa+ is fast enough for me. And I always have enough service to send calls and text. Whereas on Verizon it was spotty and only worked some of the time.

Wise move... Enjoy T-Mobile on the N4! Cool
